I taught GED in a rather tough prison for several years. I showed this movie to my classes of "tough" harden criminals. Men who refused to show any signs of weakness. Wthout exception when Will says, "I don't love you.". One or more of these "tough" men who don't need anyone would say out loud, "Oh no why would he say that? He just f#"@ up!"

@@TylerWx They didn't write for 10 years after making this movie, that's how much effort and energy they poured into the script. It took them 3 years to get most of it done, in-between acting and traveling around LA for auditions, and it still had to be punched up by 2+ other writers to get it across the goalline. Good writing is hard. Plus, they did write a couple of scripts afterwards, separately and together, when they stopped acting at a breakneck speed and started to have families.

When kids are abused their whole life.. they grow up not understanding that they don't deserve it. Will was abandoned by his parents and then had foster parents who abused him. So he grew up thinking he wasn't worth anything and that he somehow deserved that abuse. This happens to so many people in those situations, unfortunately.
Shawn (Robin Williams) recognized this as a counselor and he knew how to get through to him. He knew that before he could move forward and do anything with his life... he had to face the past and understand that it wasn't his fault. He had to learn that he has a right to be happy like everyone else. Because until he learns that, he will always be his own worst enemy.

Thank you, thank you so very much to my two favorite reactors for watching this excellent film!! Robin Williams (I miss him SO much) won a very well deserved Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for this movie and this is his best performance. Matt and Ben won the Best Screenplay Oscar. (They have been best friends for years). Another phenomenal dramatic film that Robin Williams starred in also stars Robert DeNiro and directed by Penny Marshall is "Awakenings" from 1990. The film is based on a true story and takes place in 1969. Williams plays Dr. Oliver Sachs and creates an antidote along with his staff to "awaken" patients that have been comatose for years. DeNiro plays Leonard Lowe, the first patient to receive the antidote. The film follows the effects the drug has on the patients in the summer of 1969. The film is quite moving and teaches you about the value of life. DeNiro is excellent as Leonard Lowe but the real star of the film is Robin Williams. He really shows a deep vulnerability here in his performance and it shows how incredible he is an actor. I truly hope you react to this movie someday. You will really like it.

Thank you for your beautiful, heartfelt, and empathic reaction!
When things go wrong in our lives, subconsciously, we almost always believe that, in one way or another, we failed and consequently see it as our fault.
That`s how society has been programming us for millennia. That`s how at least 90 percent of us function. Without consciously noticing it, we take the blame and bury it deep inside our souls.
And that`s why this movie resonates with so many people.
The most profound statement in this is "IT ISN`T YOUR FAULT!". I think if somebody repeatedly addressed the same sentence, with Robin Williams`s conviction at us, we would eventually break down, just like Will.

Robin Williams did indeed start out as a comedian, and comedic actor. The first I remember seeing of him was in the sitcom "Mork and Mindy", in which he played the part of a goofy alien visitor to our world. I still think back on that role of his very fondly, and love him in this role.
Williams did a fair bit of stand-up comedy back in the day, as well. I saw a few of his performances for Comic Relief, a semi-regular fundraising event to fight poverty.

Knowing what we know about the internal pain that Robin Williams was dealing with, you can see it in his eyes even in this movie. He was hurting on the inside. I've been there. Hell, I'm still there. It's just that good-hearted people who are hurting on the inside don't like to talk about it, because we don't want to burden anyone else with our pain and sadness. We'd rather suffer than to take the chance at making someone else feel the way we do.

I spoke to this woman about it and she tipped me a pound. I asked her what she did, she said she was an actor in LA, which I thought was weird because her accent was English. I said "well good luck, I think it's a tough business". As she walked away some guy said are you Minnie Driver? I thought they meant a mini cab driver lol. She said, yes I am and walked away.

I can totally relate to BJ's mention of feeling the "It's not your fault" segment. My parents divorced in the late 70s and I was just entering my teens. Divorce then isn't what it is now. If you were known to come from a "broken home", you were ridiculed because it was fairly rare. There were many times I felt that I broke my parents up simply because I felt I may have been a mistake from birth. No proof of that, but it may have been mentioned while I wasn't aware during their arguments. Both sat me down and told me it wasn't my fault, but there's still that thing in my head thinking "maybe".

I have always known some of the best dramatic actors often have a background in comedy. Because many carry a pain and understanding that informs their view on life.
    Robin Williams
    Carol Burnett
    Richard Pryor
    Jackie Gleason
    Alan Alda
    Tom Hanks
& Bill Murray, to name a few, are examples of people with strong comedic ties who can excel in dramatic roles.
I'm surprised that you didn't recognize Matt Damon as Private Ryan, a movie you recently reacted to. But your analysis of the film is correct. Many people with exceptional or powerful gifts hide behind them because it is the core of their person. It belongs to them no matter what. To risk exposing that park of yourself to the world is risking true pain to the self. You look for someone to trust while trusting no one. So, your outer person is constructed to protect the inner one. And the longer you carry it, the more weight it gains until it becomes a debilitating shield against emotional growth.
    More Robin Williams suggestions,
    DEAD POETS SOCIETY,
    GOOD MORNING VIETNAM,
    THE FISHER KING,
    & MRS. DOUBTFIRE.
    Enjoy

    ---- Luv your reactions
---- Ben Affleck and Matt Damon grew up friends and won the Academy Award for the script to Good Will Hunting
---- So many great movies to review, literally hundreds, with the following two having a music bent:
-- Almost Famous (great comedy-drama film that got 4 Academy Award nominations and won a Grammy for its Soundtrack Album - about teenage journalist writing for Rolling Stone about fictional rock band Stillwater)
-- Amadeus (an absolute must see period biographical drama film of a fictionalized story about Mozart - was rated as the 53rd best movie of the last 100 years and was put into the US National Film Registry by the Library of Congress - nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 7 including Best Actor, Best Director, Best Picture - Mozart's music is played throughout the film's soundtrack)
---- Other people already mentioned multiple Robin Williams movies who besides a great comedian was also a great dramatic actor...his Oscar-nominated roles besides Good Will Hunting were for Good Morning, Vietnam (war comedy film); Dead Poets Society (drama film where Robin plays an English teacher at an elite boarding school); The Fisher King (fantasy comedy-drama film)...Robin won six Golden Globe Awards, two Emmy Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and five Grammy Awards...other movies include Awakenings (drama film that also stars Robert de Niro), Mrs. Doubtfire (comedy-drama film where Robin dresses up as a female housekeeper to be able to interact with his children), Jumanji (fantasy adventure film about the supernatural board game), Bicentennial Man (sci-fi comedy-drama film about a robot that lives for 200 years and then wants to be allowed to die with dignity), and he played the Genie's voice in Disney's animated movie Aladdin.
---- Ben's movies include Shakespeare In Love (Ben had supporting role in this great romantic comedy-drama film about a fictional love affair of Shakespeare that stars Gwyneth Paltrow - film was nominated for 13 Academy Awards and won 7 including Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Picture), Armageddon (with Bruce Willis), Hollywoodland (biopic of George Reeves who played Superman on a TV from 1952-1958 when he died of a gunshot wound to his head in 1959 that was ruled a suicide but has always been suspect), Paycheck (sci-fi film with Uma Thurman), Gone Baby Gone (his directorial debut), The Town (directed and starred in), Argo (directed this political thriller that won Academy Award for Best Picture), Gone Girl (psychological thriller), The Accountant (another thriller), and played Batman in multiple movies (Batman v Superman, Justice League, etc)
---- Matt's movies are also extensive and include The Rainmaker (legal drama), Ocean series of heist-comedy films (Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve, Ocean's Thirteen, Ocean's Eight as supporting actor), Bourne series of action-thriller films (The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, Jason Bourne as the lead character in this great series of films), The Departed (crime thriller that also has Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg that was on many critics top ten lists - nominated for 5 Academy Awards winning 4 including Best Director and Best Picture), The Informant! (biographical-crime comedy film), The Adjustment Bureau (sci-fi romantic thriller film), The Martian ( science fiction film nominated for 7 Academy Awards about astronaut's long struggle to survive on Mars while waiting for NASA to come back and rescue him), Ford v Ferrari (sports drama film nominated for 4 Academy Awards about Ford building a racing car that would defeat Ferrari at the 1966 24-hour Le Mans race - based on the true story of America's first win at Le Mans with Ford's GT40), Stillwater (crime drama film)

Another awesome movie!!! This movie actually inspired me to become a therapist because of Robin Williams' character. This movie is relatable in so many ways. Ben Afflect and Matt Damon wrote an incredible script. Ben and Casey Affleck are brothers. Casey is younger than Ben.
Its different to watch Robin Williams in movies since his passing. It's a lot more emotional, and at the same time it's a reminder of the Robine Williams that we all knew and loved. RIP to the legend of comedy!
I watched a doc. about Williams' life and his struggle with substance abuse and mental health. He took on roles that were funny and he took on roles that were serious. Roles that he could relate to in his life; dark and serious. I think thats what made Robin Williams a great actor because he could play any character no matter what genre it was.
