- I realise I didn't talk much about Seven Psychopaths, it's the weakest of the three. A great movie still, but I feel the other two encapsulate McDonagh's strengths more clearly.

This is such an articulate analysis of McDonagh's style, thank you.
Glad to see somebody uses their platform to shoutout McDonagh's genius
Seven Psychopaths is a unpredictable and wild ride with a compelling finale. Strong film. In Bruges...to me is transcended. One of my favorite films, ever. Defies easy categorization or description. I feel so much about In Bruges.
i really wasnt a fan of seven psychopaths at all.
My favorite writer/director. Even the short film he made about the train is incredibly.
I'm sad that 3 Billboards got him popular because I enjoyed being a special snowflake whose favourite movie is a 2008 thing nobody knows about from some random Irish director.
@@paulmcgrath6118 the guard was directed by his brother.
@@paulmcgrath6118 Six Shooter is awesome.
Been waiting for someone to release something like this on McDonagh's work.
Very well thought out analysis, amazing work!
In saying that, Chris man what a fantastic video. Brilliantly edited. Fantastic, in-depth analysis. Clear research leading to useful analysis of the director and his films.
This man is known for makin the saddest comedies EVER, and I’m not usually big on dark comedies, but I watch some of ‘em whenever I want to, not just his movies
Would you care to recommend some? I loved his seven psychopaths.
Happy to say that Banshees continues with everything you said here!
This is such a great analysis. Location totally does affect the story. LA seems like such a weird choice compared to Bruges and Missouri for his other movies
I suppose for the story of Seven Psychopaths it made sense for it to take place in Hollywood since Marty is a hopeful screenwriter attempting to find his voice with his script. Glad you liked the video!
@@RecDougs When they were in LA I didn't feel like the place was as important to the story as it was in the other films until they went to the desert. Then it became more atmospheric like we've seen with his other movies. It's probably just a weird preference.
Thanks for posting it! I subscribed, looking forward to your next content :)
@@nikytag Yeah I agree. Even though I like Seven Psychopaths and think it's a good film, it's the weakest of his 3 films so far in my opinion, in terms of themes and characters. I realised after doing this whole video that I only brought it up a handful of times, because In Bruges and Three Billboards are a better display of McDonagh's strengths. I'd say Three Billboards is his best, but In Bruges is still my personal favourite.
And thanks! I appreciate you.
This analysis is beyond amazing, thank you!!
Martin McDonagh films ranked:
1. Three Billboards Outside
Ebbing, Missouri
2. In Bruges
3. Seven Psychopaths
Agree.
In Bruges is still my personal favourite but I agree Three Billboards is definitely a better movie.
@@RecDougs do you not count sixth shooter in the ranking?
Very nicely done mate!
This is very apt, thanks for making this! I also feel that his tragedy is very inclusive in that it allows for a kind of a genuine and relatable catharsis which is hard to experience and express in this convergingly polar world, where hashtags are the only way to evocate . Also quite loved your analysis of Utopia, would be great if you a recommendation list to share.
Brilliant video, well done!
Great video. Keep up the good work. Thank you.
Best video on this topic.. so many videos on this guy's writing have so much talk but so little to actually say..
I absolutely agree about the trailers. I watched the In Bruges trailer and didn’t really want to watch the movie because it didn’t look very good or what I was looking for to watch. But I did end up watching it and was so glad for it, because it’s now in my top 5 favorite films. The trailer does not do it justice, it is such a good film
Thanks for sticking up for Dank, mate 😁👍. A brave man indeed.
I also think that 'The Guard', by Martin's older brother John, really nails black comedy, and I think Brendan Gleeson is equally as brilliant in it as he in 'In Bruges'. Also, there's a joke about MI6 in it that made me physically spit my dinner when I first heard it - I was so caught off guard, and it was hysterical.
That's one of my favourite films, I've given that dvd to so many of my friends lol
0:55, what movie is this?
Also my god man! I thought this was a 100k channel, such beautiful in-depth analysis. You deserve more Subs mate!
Four Lions
This video is still good two years later watching it
Brilliant video!
His plays are incredibly good, too
in bruges is one of my all time favs. it saddens me how many garbage movies netflix and hollywood are churning out with blatant woke messages without any good storytelling. this dude does it all while having such a relatable characters and exploring them in depth. u can deliver messages in a movie without slapping audience in face. people are not born racists or w/e ists... its never black and white ... no1 is pure evil or pure good.
what a beautiful way to explore concept of redemption! bravo
thanks for this video
I love pillow man. It kept me up for days x
His first short film Six Shooter (that's free to watch on CZcams) is fantastic too.
Well done
I agree with everything you just said, and you said it so well.
Your Videos remind Me of My favorite reviewers.

Good Job.
It’s amazing to me he has only made 4 films. He’s just a genius.
Only seen 7 psychopaths but it's easily one of my favourite movies of all time, never seen anything like it and I had no idea the director made 3 billboards. Makes me actually interested in that film now
I think 7 psychopaths is actually the deepest of all three.
I agree, it's definitely me favorite movie of them all. Though, in bruges whiped me out, so psychedelic, deep, dense with universal truth, and unnervingly moving. But ofcourse, everything this director makes consistently is and I can't fucking wait for the next one and hope there's atleast two more.
Agreed.
@1:17 Tom Wambsgans finally having too much of Shiv.
Showcasing his talent eh? My wish was that he returns to theatre, write and direct a play, inwanted to see how his development as a filmmaker would add to his theatre, how it adds to his writing how it add to his direction of performances, but on stage, just a fascinating thought for me, wanted to see how he evolved over this break.
Great video. Not much more to contribute
Check out his plays and a short film called Six Shooter.(some should still be on YT😉)
He's brilliant 🖤
Thank you for this video 💜
if you like his dark humour then also checkout six shooter - an early short
Great anaysis
Speaking of the trailer, I don't think selling 'In Bruges' as a straight-up comedy is necessarily a bad idea. Although I didn't watch this movie cause of the trailer but rather because of a one joke cut out. Still I was expecting it to be a black comedy, but I was in no way dissapointed getting something more profound in the end.
Hey I just came from a Dank's video on Christopher lee
In Bruges is one of my favourite films. This week (Jan 2023) I went to the pictures to see the Banshees of Inisherin and I could feel the McDonagh influence. Three Billboards and Six Shooter were also good, but I can't find where to watch Seven Psychopahts. Which is disappointing because the official trailer looks brilliant.
*your only saying that cos your both welsh*
Is that a line from something?
@@RecDougs no. Your bias to weles
@@RecDougs - I'm only joking, dude, I know you're Scottish through and through.
Thanks for replying so quickly. I can't be arsed watching this now cos it's half 10 but I'm gonna watch it tomorrow. I'm trying to watch more stuff you've made vids about cos I think your a really understated guy with a lot to say, and that's nice to see.
@@nightowl8477 lmao good to know but I'm neither Scottish nor Welsh 😂
@@RecDougs - I know, that was my second joke. *I THOUGHT THE IRISH WERE THE KINGS OF SARCASM.* Some stereotypes and disappointingly untrue.
TragiComedy is not the same as black/dark comedy. Please change the video title. It is misleading
In Bruges and 3 Billboards are both Black Comedies and TragiComedies.
Yawn
