  • The Nissan Titan and XD were refreshed for the 2020 model year and the Cummins is no longer available. I wanted to get some footage to see how well the 5.6L V8 does while towing. Will it pass the test or will it fail compared to it's diesel counterpart? Find Out!

    Starting 2020, add 10hp and 20lb ft of torque AND tolerates 87 UNLD (derates hp).
    I got a 2021 Titan XD, that only comes with the 5.6L gas V8. I picked the XD b/c it’s a foot longer, STRONG frame, massive radiator, both engine oil and trans oil coolers and the differential gearing @ 4.08 and gearing of the 9-speed is spread wider to give a high ratio 1st gear yet enough gearing to keep the rpms civil on the highway.
    XD was meant to tow with. Dispatches our TT very well. A bit hard on fuel when towing but when that truck is working hard towing all the temps stay AT NORMAL despite pulling our TT (~6K loaded, 10’10” tall, 8’ wide) over mountains. That extra foot and 800 lbs over the regular titan makes a full day towing a lot easier. Strong headwinds will kill fuel economy, but again, temps stay good, enough power, good control of the trailer, even with the wind. 🎉

    I tow a 26' Jayco RV with my 2017 CC 4x4 Titan and it handles it quite well. I also use an adjustable antisway hitch and it helps keep the trailer steady at 65 mph. I also added timbrens which really help with the rear squat. Considering mine has a 6" lift and 35s, it handles the load exceptionally well. We took it out just this weekend again and this time I even loaded my ATV in the bed and it handled it quite well.

    Nice video guys. Two real car guys sharing what it is really all about instead of a typical BS "truck review" that gives me no info that a real user needs. As you clearly pointed out that the Titan you used in this video was pretty loaded and that caused its payload capacity to be on the low end of the scale for all Titans. In other words (for other readers, I know you guys know this), This era of Titan has a payload capacity that ranges from 1300 lbs to 1900lbs. If you get a truck with a lot of heavy options like sunroof, leather, crew cab, giant rims etc, all that weight takes away from your available payload capacity. Payload capacity is the weight of all passengers, dogs, luggage, tools, weight distribution hitch AND the real tongue weight of the trailer. ----- I would absolutely use a good weight distribution hitch with anti sway control for a trailer this size with a 1/2 ton Titan (non XD). When you tow out west you can not imagine how strong the winds are, and they hit you from the side and man...... Anyway, thanks again JB.

    I agree with Mikey P. I wouldn’t get one for towing a trailer that weight and length. Had a 2010 with an 7500# 30ft travel trailer. I did great at lower speeds but anything a touch over 60mph the trailer would start pushing the truck all over the road and was a white knuckle and stressful experience. And that scenario was with weight distribution and a friction sway control , that I had pulled over and tightened down as much as I could, and it still walked that truck all over the road.

      @JB_WhoWork  Před 4 lety +1

    • @JB_WhoWork
      @JB_WhoWork  Před 2 lety

      I know that it’s capable, it’s just hard to stay within the payload when you add so much hitch weight to the truck. Some fifth wheels have dry hitch weights around 1500#’s, add 400#’s for passengers, figure 300#’s for cargo, and you have exceeded the payload of the truck.

    I don't have any truck..but i'm struggling to decide between titan or tundra.
    For tundra, I just can't seem get over the dated interior, and exterior, and unleveled floor when the backseat is folded. I just know its a super reliable truck though.
    For titan, I read some terrible reviews about its transmission, and I found a lot of used, 2016, 2017, 2018 with low mileages, 20k-50k, but have had 2 or 3 previous owners in such short period of time, with such low mileages. The reasons behind it kinda worried me to buy a used one

      I’m sure the mirrors can be switched out but I would go for an XD if you plan on towing regularly. The Titan had issues with the Cummins setup but the 5.6 is pretty much gonna be the reliable way to go.

      Be sure to check the numbers on your door but honestly the Titan and Ford/RAM 3/4 tons have same issues which is payload. The good news is there are a lot of TT that have really filled the gap to the point where you don’t necessarily need a fifth wheel hopefully you can still find something that will work for you and your family 👍🏾

    Is the Titan XD considered a 3/4 ton truck? I'm seeing online that the towing capacity is like 13k but the payload is almost 3k.

      Depends on who you ask but this truck that I used for testing is considered a 1/2 ton. If you choose the XD Titan that truck is an “in between 5/8 ton truck” due to it having a slightly higher GVWR.

      It’s not rated as a 3/4 ton but it’ll tow just as much. I’ve personally towed the same max weight as a f250 and it towed it fine and stopped it just as well

    Might as well get a 3/4 ton Gasser truck if you are gonna tow 7K pounds.
