1975 Ford Granada GL - Back on the road after 27 years

  • I almost can't believe I'm typing this but after 5 years of work I've managed to get the car finished. It's been quite the ride and an experience I'll never forget.
I managed to do most of the work myself at weekends and it took 1350 hours in total. I paid to keep the car stored at my place of work which allowed me to undertake most of the restoration work in my spare time.
The car is a 1975 coupe model. Trim is GL and the colour is Carnival Red. Its left hand drive as this specific model of Granada was never officially sold in the UK. My car was imported to the UK in 1985, came off the road in 1994 and sat in gardens and sheds until 2016 when I bought it.
I've still a few teething problems to sort out and the endless cleaning and polishing to do. For the most part the car is finished. If you'd like to see more pictures and read the story of the restoration you can do so at the below link...

Amusing, I used to have Granada Estates, 3 of them one after the other, because it's amazing how much model railway equipment you can squeeze in the back when taking layouts to exhibitions !

If we hadn't followed you through building Everard Junction (twice) and you were just some bloke who had restored this classic we might be astounded at the quality of this job. But as we know you well in your modeling we would expect nothing less than perfection. And you delivered. Nice one Richard.

Good job. Haven't seen a "fastback" Granada (resisted the urge to type "granddad") for at least 30 years. I grew up in a ford household; 105E Anglia Deluxe, MkIII Cortina 1600XL, Mk2 Popular Plus, '71 Mustang...

Love it. I'm a model railway fan and a car nut. You were blessed with far too many talents sir. Owning a classic car is on my bucket list. I'd like a car made the same year I was born which was 1977. I often go looking on classic car sites to see what's available but haven't yet taken the plunge. until I do I'll keep collecting the Oxford diecasts for the layout. Good work

An absolute labour of love and a credit to your hard work and perseverance! Well done indeed. The same attention to detail you have with Everard Junction is clear to see.
There is a history of mine and Dads love affair with Fords finest; I had an 1982 X 2.3 Ghia Mk2 in Caribbean Blue, Dad had a 1983 A 2.3 GL in Glacier Blue, then I sold the 2.3 Ghia and bought a 1989 G 2.4i Ghia Mk3 in silver, gave that to Dad and bought a 1993 L 2.9i Ghia, in Mineral Blue then part-exed that for a 1992 K Scorpio Cosworth, 2.9 24v saloon in white. That was my last Granada, so it was good to go out on a high.
    Next car was a 2001 Ford Cougar, 2.5 V6.

    I was 12 in 1994...
Also, I used to have quite a few Mk3 Capris in my youth, and I actually got a LHD driver’s mirror with the remote toggle control and fitted it to my passenger door on my 2.0 S Capri. Looked much better. I’m surprised Ford never offered that as an option.

Hi Richard, it's not very often that I comment on any video but in your case I thought I would get in touch. Like yourself we are very much into the hobby of model railways. However we are also very much into our classic cars and and I thought it was interesting that you also share these two interests as well. You have done a wonderful job over the five years on the restoration and it's great to finally see the fruits of your labour. I know exactly what you mean when you refer the softness of the suspension and how newer cars are just not the same in that resect. Great job maintaining the original tyre sizes. We always laugh when we look at how small and thin car tyres were in the past in comparison to todays vehicles. Anyhow if you are interested we currently have a Mk1 Range Rover 3 door 1972, Series 3 Land Rover 1972 (winner of the spirit of the rally London to Dakar 2004), The oldest known Mk1 Cavalier in the UK manufactured 1975 GL a 1.9l, another MK1 1978 also a 1.9Gl. Most recently we have just completed a full restoration on a 1983 4 door MK2 cavalier GLS 1.6. We have put some videos on the channel if you fancy a look but I tend not to put them on the channel normally due to the channel topic. Anyway Richard brilliant video and hope you get many years of joy from the Granada .

Man, that looks good. Reupholstering is definitely a good call, given the kind of things that you can pull out of old car seats... but the plus side is that looking at the inside of that thing it might just as well be 1975. You should be proud - as I'm sure you are. Sounds sublime accelerating, too.
