I’ve been lucky enough to see all 3 singers live. And to be fair, they have all got very very powerful vocals live. My favourite is Anette. And yes credit needs to be Given to Tuomas.
All the singers brought something to Nightwish. They all have their songs that are theirs. You have a lot of songs to hear and with Nightwish you never know what is coming next. They have done over 100 songs. It is early in your journey. So enjoy your Nightwish journey. It is a wonderful ride and I would like to join it......... :-)

I agree! I still think Floor doesn't have her own songs yet, tho. I mean, she's a killer... She's amazing and do a great job. She kills it in Ghost Love Score at the end, but that song is still Tarja's. She have a more controlled and strong voice than Anette and is more versatile than Tarja in therms of "genre". But still, I'm waiting for her own songs in the next album, when Tuomas will be thinking about HER voice in the songs - like Imaginaerum was better for Anette than Dark Passion Play.
I mean, you hear "Shudder Before the Beautiful", from the first studio album with Floor, and is clearly a song made for Anette to sing.
"Scaretale" for example, is Anette's song. Floor tried it, but... Nah. If Floor someday try to sing "Turn Loose the Mermaids", I don't see that working (it's a shame Anette left the band without singing it live). "Walking in the Air" in Haartwall Arena in 2009, with Anette, for me is the best version of that song. And I prefer Anette's backing vocals in "The Islander" than Floor's.
This whole album is amazing. It's my favorite of theirs, not that there is ANYTHING bad about the others.
Tarja was the Best! I do love Floor too but Tarja was the best. Wish I had seen her live. Anette has a pretty voice and is a good singer but just never seemed right for this band. I have seen Nightwish four times with Floor. They are an AWESOME live band!!! If you ever get the chance, don't miss them. 😁
One of their best. Floor and Tarja man, it's like Bruce and Paul of Iron Maiden. 2 amazing vocalists that bring their own thing to the band. Just another reason why these guys are right up there with Maiden. Just imagine a Maiden and Nightwish co headline tour. I'd lose my mind.
Nightwish has never been Tarja/Floor/Anette & The Boys. Let's give the credit where it belongs, to the guy who actually write most of the music, lyrics and all the fantastic melodies. Tuomas Holopainen!

Although I agree that Tuomas Holopainen is a Genius. All of them need each other. Nightwish with Tarja is totally different from Nightwish with Floor and same for the Anette. Even the music is different with each of them. I am not saying which is better. But If we are to agree Nightwish became The Nightwish with Tarja then we must accept the she too gave her identity to the band. Same thing for the Floor, she gave her unique touch to the band and band evolved. And Anette, she was unlucky, it was a huge hole to cover but she did it. It was different, but she did her job. Anyway... This is what we call as "band" without musical synergy Tuomas would produce totally different music. So I respectfully disagree with you. Nightwish was Tarja/Floor/Anette&boys&Holopainen.

I Loved Tarja and was unhappy when I heard the split. I was even more unhappy with the new singer Anette no offense but her voice was never right for Nightwish. Then along comes Floor who brought me back to the original nightwish when I saw her live performances. most recently, Early last year they toured and came to Colorado. as you entered the venue cd's were being handed out to all ticket holders. the cd's were a two cd set with songs throughout their career as a band. What I thought the most lovely is that each song on the two cd set, was done by their original singer nothing changed or edited about the songs. It was a wonderful homage to each singers time in the band and is a very wonderful keep sake to have from their last tour. Point being Nightwish is truly magical no matter who is fronting the band on vocals.

Everyone should note that this song has been heavily produced and Tarja's voice edited A LOT. She has never had that soft tone. Her voice is very raw kind of and has very dark tone.

I saw the live version and is as good as this one... you like the other singer ok, but do not try to take down another just because you do not like (looks childish)... looks bad trying to find wrong where there is not... I prefer Tarja light years from floor, but I think floor is good, but she is the basic of any other rock band (oh she sings different styles... yeah but none are unique for me, is good), tarja is different, unique, chills from her singing, the mood, it feels amazing for me, is what made nightwish unique... what I hear from today is good, but not epic as the older ones.
I didn’t compare anything. Just stating an obvious fact that is very audible. She sounds way different live. That’s the only thing I said there. You can also hear very clearly that this track has gone through quite heavy producing and actually ruining a lot of potential the song itself has music-wize. Not much dynamics so it makes it sound almost lame. In that sense the following albums have much better sound quality. The albums with Floor have much more authentical vocal production and in Human Nature the vocals are almost raw recordings with very little any kind of editing.

Elvis Valentin Agreed, and Last in Line is easily the best of the lot you mention. Sacred Heart isn't that popular a choice and as an album I think it was weaker but the song itself is good and also a good option.
I love both, Tarja and Floor, and even that I prefer Tarja voice, we just can't deny that Floor is a more complete vocalist, I mean, that woman voice is so powerful and versatile

While I do agree with everything else. I don't think it is fair to say Floor is a more complete vocalist. Their focus is just distributed differently. I would even argue, that Tarja could be considered the more complete classical trained vocalist than Floor, who doesn't use use classical singing techniques as much, or as well as Tarja.
Large part of what makes Floor so exceptional as a vocalist, is not how amazing her singing techniques or voice are, but how she can effortlessly change from different styles in an instant, which is extremely difficult for most vocalists. This is one reason Floor is the perfect 3rd vocalist for Nightwish, since she can, at least to some extent, perform both Tarja's and Annette's songs. Which neither of the previous ones would be able to do.
Getting tired of these discussions. No, Floor isn't more powerful; only a fool would believe that. And versatility doesn't mean something is better either, I prefer music more specialised to my tastes, not music that streatches wide to appease more people.
And no, Floor isn't more complete. Jack of all trades is master of none; remember that.
Floor is definitely more versatile, she can pull off so many styles well. But I don't think you can say Floor's voice is more "powerful" whatever that means, and also Tarja is definitely a far superior classical style singer at the expense of having a variety of styles at her disposal. Although I have to admit that having a versatile singer like Floor is the absolute perfect fit for Nightwish.

I feel like whether you prefer Floor or Tarja comes down on how you look at band. If you see it more as this theatrical operatic masterpiece then Tarja is better, but if you see it more as a metal band with amazing range Floor is the one. I'm with Tarja but both are amazing.

There’s a warmth and deeper range in Floor’s voice that she cannot match which to me suits Nightwish’s more power metal direction now. This is exactly why I liked the music but could never click w Tarja’s more operatic voice. Floor all day !!

They should have renamed the band after Tarja left, to be honest. Having listened to Nightwish since their early days, I just can't shake the feeling that Floor is riding on the success that Nightwish built with Tarja, and that's even with me liking Floor a lot. If they'd renamed, the band could be awesome with Floor in their own right, with their own direction, instead of just having this "cheap" feeling of Floor just being Tarjas replacement.

Something that most if not all people realise/think of is that Nightwish (and some other bands of course) are not singing, playing or composing in their native language/s. Imagine other bands that speak English doing all their music in a different language to the one that they speak at home/ are brought up in.
Interesting to read how people choose their favorite due to technical aspects, for me music and singing is all about invoking emotions, and the best way to know when something has had an impact - is when it gets stuck in your memory. For me Tarja is more memorable and has the strongest impact, but I will credit Floor for being versatile, she fits the metal brand better. But I have a soft spot for the unexpected, the unusual, and that is Tarja for me.

Tarja is definitely awesome, but one dimensional. That dimension is ridiculously amazing though. Floor is the whole package. Stage presence unmatched. The only thing she can't do quite as good as Tarja is the pure opera stuff. But Floor gets way closer to that than Tarja gets to her. Other than that, Floor is one of the greatest front people of any band ever. Love the whole thing though. Nightwish is for sure one of my favorite bands ever. The whole thing.

If you think Floor's stage presence is unmatched, you haven't been to many concerts. Nightwish in 2016 was a huge disappointment for me. Don't get me wrong, they were good. But having to describe my all time favourite band as just "good"? That really hurts.

You got to listen to Within Temptation, they did an album in 2014 called Hydra. They did a song with Tarja called Paradise (What About Us) what a song ,what a performance, Tarja's solo in the middle of the song gave me goosebumps, wow.she could break glass with that voice. If you like the epic style, maybe Avantasia is something for you. The Single "The Raven Child" is out since Christmas, i think. On that song, you have three male front-singers, but Avantasia always had several different guests on their albums, like Alice Cooper or Eric Martin. If you want a shorter, faster song, maybe "Promised Land" is the one for you.

kani niaz hell yeah...wacken 2013. The minor chord change she performs at the end of that is incredible. Tarja was ok but performing live is where the elite performers shine....and thats where floor proves she is a real frontperson for a band. Tarja was good recording in a studio...floor brings nightwish into the massive stadium league.(and touring is where the money is).

Nightwish grew bigger after each album since Angel Fall First, same with Anette's albums, so the growing factor has nothing to do with the singer really, more likely to do with internet becoming viral and more freely accessible to billions of more people after Tarja left, not to mention social media like Facebook and Twitter :). But now it appears the trend is going down, EFMB sold worse than Imaginaerum, and Once have suprassed DDP.
Check out Kamelot - "Ghost Opera" - they're another band with symphonic elements and theatrical elements. Their vocalist at the time, Roy Khan, studied opera and incorporates elements of that into his singing style, but I wouldn't call it operatic. You won't be disappointed!

I have been a hardcore fan since 2000 or 2001 (it's been so long- my mom was actually a fan and I had been really into Black Metal before then.) the first Nightwish song I'd ever really listened to and gotten into was Pharoh Sails To Orion, which was highlighted on the Oceanborn Album my mother had given me. :)
and... Speaking of Black Metal, my three year old suggested "ABBATH! ERRRRRRRRRRRR!" music, so I am guessing that means she'd like to you to react to some Immortal. (Battlefields is her favorite- idk if I should be proud or ashamed of myself. )

Tarja and Floor are both excellent, but there is just that rough edge in Tarja's voice that just tips the scale here. Floor has a more clean sound and it is great in its own right, but Tarja's darker sound just hits my ears better. Nightwish, where the band doesn't stop playing for the vocalist to be heard... Anette experiment really failed at that and I'm guessing why she didn't last long. Floor and Tarja hold their own against the barrage from the instruments... And that is what makes Nightwish so special... They go all out!
I think Floor can be the best but Nightwish hasn't made allot of original material with her that really shows off her strengths.
If you compare just their operatic voices you may be correct, but given floors wider range of different tecniques and styles of singing that point should go to floor
I never heard Tarja growling, like Floor on Yours is an empty hope. Floor is more a metal singer, with some opera style. So, Tarja is amazing, there's no dubt about it, it's a pleasure listening to songs like this, but Floor is so much more complete and versatile, that gives lots of other posibilities.

@@HoshijiroTS336 If i wanted to listen to opera i would chose Tarja over floor. ( keep in mind if you want to listen to opera there are lots of other options out there )
Nightwish is a band that wants to change and try different stuff. For that, floor fits nightwish more than Tarja. Also her voice has a larger range.
( she can ever grawl, quite cool if you sing for a metal band ) All those are just opinions tho, for me Floor is more pleasant to my ears, and for my taste in music.
My cousin is married to a soprano. he is a pianist himself and quite a snob when it comes to music, he would say nightwish are not good enough for his ears, cause the acustics and the quality of the sound are lacking compared to the classics. Bach is so much better composer that Tuomas and so on.
At the end of the day its all about what you enjoy. I dont care about bach.

You're right about one thing, Floor does fit with Nightwish now more than Tarja. Because their style has changed, as it did with Anette. But in my opinion Tarja fits with the old style better.

I'm really glad you're discovering what used to be generically called "European Metal" (like 15+ years ago) because for the longest time, it was the only place you could reliably go where every song on every album by a great band was consistently great rather than most popular (radio) artists putting out like two or three high quality singles and the rest of the songs on an album being filler.
Record labels got away with that crap for decades. So yeah! I'm very happy that you're exploring the world of dyed-in-the-wool Metal because almost all artists are super consistent and you can be confident that every song a bands you enjoy release will be great. There's almost no filler, no half measures, no laziness, everything is to the max.
You can also check NIGHTWISH - Ghost Love Score (End Of An Era) performed by Tarja, i am sure you enjoing it, because you allready listen Floor's performance.
If I had to pick one, I'd pick Floor, because of her ability vs the others, but that's not to negate the powerful influence of the previous singers. Each of them made their mark on the band, in legacy and in growth. Floor completes Nightwish in a way the other two never could and I wouldn't have it any other way. Unlike other bands where you tend to shun certain albums because of member changeups, Nightwish has remained consistent throughout; listening to Tarja in her era is natural and even desirable. We have all of those years of talent and great music and each iteration stands on its own as great works of art you can enjoy time and time again. The chapters of Nightwish all cohesively go together and the book is still being written. I can't wait for the next chapter.

What I find sad is all them rabid Floor fans that promote their darling by attacking other singers. Sure there are some rabid Tarja fans too, but only a fraction of Floor knights. I suppose it is because most rabid Tarja fans alread left during Anette, and those who loved Anette too, aren't rabid fanbois of one singer.
Tarja is very good i love her and her voice, that being said...Floor Jansen is on another level, not only by her astonishing voice, but for her stage presence as well, the woman is an amazon godess and one of my favorite if not my absolute favorite female singer :)

I love Floor's voice and I love Tarja's voice. But I favor Floor for what may be a controversial reason. You can hear an accent in Tarja's singing much more than with Floor. There are a few more bands from Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark that I would listen to more if it wasn't for the accent of their singer.
Same for me. You can hear it very strongly in End of an Era - any vowel Tarja sings sounds the same. Since Floor I hear it even better

It's true. The way she pronounces "wish" for example is very distinct.
Finnish is not a Scandinavian language though. Scandinavian languages are the northern Germanic languages, Finnish is a Finnic language, two different language families (Indo-European and Uralic).
Dutch is quite close to English. I joined once a Dutch MMO guild and could understand much of their chat, and I never had any Dutch experience. But I have studied English, German and Swedish (being native Finnish) and Dutch was like between German and English. Listening to Dutch would be harder than reading it, I'm sure.

Tarja has her talent. Operatic vocals. She is great at that. She is however a 1 trick pony. Floor is certainly more diverse. With that said do not dismiss floors ability to sing opera. Check out epica Sabat Mator Delerosa (sp) She is actually very good herself but was asked to use other tone for the most part. Basically do her own thing.

Yup! As soon as I saw his headings, I was like "The Hell You Say!!!???" Heh heh. Frankly, I don't care who is better. I am thankful for both! I love Tarja's versions of songs, and can rock out to her, but Floor's voice transports me to a different dimension of time and space....
Come on we all love Nightwish with Tarja but after Anette, Floor is god send.
