Let's look at these supposed "disco ball reflected lights":
    1. They rise and set above/below the horizon
    2. They rise and set at different angles above/below the horizon depending on your latitude. For instance, at the North Pole, they never rise or set above/below the horizon, at the Equator they rise and set perpendicular to the horizon and at the South Pole, they never rise or set above/below the horizon.
    3. In the Northern Hemisphere, they rotate in a counter-clockwise direction and in the Southern Hemisphere, they rotate in a clockwise direction.
Wow! These disco ball reflected lights will really warp your mind!

A couple of other points he overlooked...
1 - Polaris isn't a single star, it's a triple star system which looks like a single star to the naked eye. A decent telescope will separate them, and the same applies to lots of other stars.
2 - The stars aren't "fixed". There are several distinct and measurable movements - stellar parallax, stellar aberration and proper motion - which need to be explained.

Hmm, stars are light spots on a dome? I can work with that. Celestial navigation includes a nice formula of distance from GP = Zenith angle times 60 Nautical Miles. That has the implication that if you are 60 NM from the GP of a star it is at a zenith angle of 1 degree. At the GP it has a zenith angle of 0 degrees. That gives us two angles and 1 side of a right angle triangle! The height of EVERY celestial object used by Celestial Navigation is therefore about 3438 NM or 6367 km or 3956 standard miles. The town of Ushuaia in Argentina is 54.8019 S or 8,688 NM or 16,090 km or 9,998 standard miles from the North Pole. So the flat Earth is at least 20,000 standard miles across, and at every point over that huge expanse the stars, Sun & Moon are at a constant height. That sounds more like a ceiling than a dome to me. A circle on a flat ceiling looks like an ellipse when seen from the side, yet celestial pole centered star trails are always circles no matter where you capture them. So no ceiling and the Earth is NOT flat.

    • @sthurston2
      @sthurston2 Před 2 lety

Having modelled a flat Earth with distortion for Zenith angle x 60NM to work I found to my horror that the view did not look massively distorted from reality in the Northern hemisphere. There are distortions but they didn't look that obvious. After much double checking I realised I had missed something important. The days were noticeably shorter. On the Equator at the Equinox they would get just 8 hours! At the Equinox my location would be short by 1 hour 20 minutes from the about 12 hours we get in reality.
The Southern hemisphere screwed up my view calculations as the results looked stupid. Still day length can be calculated as the Sun will be at the horizon when 5400 NM away -- 90 x 60 = 5400. So with location and Sun distances from the North pole the day length can be calculated with the help of a triangle calculator to get the location - North Pole - Sun angle. Sydney at 33 S on the Equinox would get a paltry 6 hours 15 minutes. McMurdo in Antarctica would get a tiny 2 hours 50 minutes. The December solstice doesn't help any. Sydney would get just 5 hours 56 minutes instead of the more than 14 hours I have witnessed.

Why did the Maker of the Flat Earth bother to make the stars move? Why did it even make the stars appear? What are the stars for? (Obviously, so that humans could use them and lots of math to navigate poorly for about 200 years. (Stationary stars would be really easy to navigate by.))
Why did the Flat-Earth Maker make the Sun move? Why not just switch it off at night? Why not make it always day time? (Obviously, so humans could see the stars to navigate by.)
Seriously, a stationary sun, a fixed moon, and a scattering of daylight stars on the dome, and navigation would be a doddle.

The magnetic North Pole moves around in relation to the geographical or "true" North Pole. That's why there's magnetic variation, which you need to take into account if you want to take accurate compass bearings. The magnetic variation changes not only over time but also according to where you are on the earth. At the moment it's quite small, in some places so small that you can ignore it for many practical purposes. But 50 years ago it was very significant, so you have to make sure you have up to date information.
Polaris is not "fixed", it moves (as we see it) in a small circle around the "true" or geographical North Pole.
So that's two "Norths" we have -"true" North and magnetic North. They are not the same. But when you are working with maps, there's a third North. It's called grid North, the direction to which the Northern ends of the map's grid lines point. Why is that not the same as "true" North? Oh ... umm ... could it possibly have something to do with the fact that a map is a flat, 2D, projection of a not-flat, 3D, earth? Hmmm...
I learned all this in geography when I was 11. Here's a simple explanation for kids. No, I was never in the Scouts (YUK! Grrr!), but at least they do teach some useful things. The problem with them is all the god n' queen stuff, for which I have no time at all. But for land skills, navigation and map reading they have it right here, and neither god nor the queen get a mention..

And if the stars are “Fixed,” how are they rotating? “Fixed” and “Rotating” are two different things...very different. “Fixed,” means “Not moving.” “Rotating,” means moving in a circular motion. They can’t do both. I’m sorry; but it just can’t.
