The 150 Year Battle for the World's Most Important Trade Route

  • Over the last several thousand years, trade has been one of the biggest economic and geopolitcal drivers that has determined the power of nations.
And there is one specific example that comes to mind.
There is one trade route that has single handedly created economic booms, caused deep economic recessions, was a key player in several wars, and has constantly been fought over, for nearly 150 years.
This is the battle of the worlds most important trade route.
From the 16th century to the early 19th century, the British and the French had colonised many parts of africa, India, southeast asia, Oceania, and the America’s.
During this time, trade was essential for both sending supplies to build the colonies, and also for sending resources back to their mother countries.
But both countries ran into a little bit of a problem.
Fore Example, If Britain wanted to trade with india they would have one of two options.
The first of which is that they would need to travel from London, all the way around the most southern part of africa, before crossing the indian ocean and completing the 20 000 kilometre journey to india.
The second option is that they would travel from london, around portugal, through the mediteranean, Then transport the goods by land through egypt, before loading the goods back on ships in the red sea, and the finally crossing the indian ocean.
Needless to say, both of these options were extremely inefficient, but at the time, they were the best options available.
That was until the 1830s when French Explorer, Lilant de Bellefonds conducted a survey of land around the Isthmus of Suez, which is a 125 kilometre strip of land between the mediteranean sea, and the red sea. And what he found was that the mediteranean and red sea actually lied at the same altitude… meaning that theoretically, a canal with no locks could potentially be built connecting the two bodies of water.
In 1850, French Diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps was givern permission from the egyptian government to create a company that would be responsible for constructing the canal, and operate it for 99 years. The company raised money from a range of French, British, Egyptian, and american investors. And on April 25 1859, work on the Suez Canal began.
It took 1.5 million labourers, 100 million dollars, and 10 years to complete the project. But nonetheless on November 17, 1869, the Canal was opened under french control. Celebreations began with fireworks, a banquet, high end yachts, and world leaders all contributing to the inauguration of the canal. And this was the first time in history where ships travelled between the mediteranean sea and the red sea, without having to travel around the bottom of africa.
And this was revolutionary, as cargo ships, naval ships, and just about any sea kind of baring vessel could now cut over 8000 kilometres, and several weeks off of its travel time between europe, africa, and asia. This is when the Suez Canal became the most important trade route in the world because all of a sudden, the 3 most populated continents on the planet at the time had one single efficient trade route between one another.
And the effects of the Canal were seen almost immediatly as trade between continents increased fairly rapidly over the next several years.
But this economic effect wasn’t positive for all nations. You see, The British empire had colinized most of southern africa and its surrounding islands. These colonies economies were largely dependant upon ships that would stop at their ports, store some of their goods in british warehouses, and inject some money at local shops.
But once the Suez Canal opened, these ships stopped showing up, and the most impacted colony at the time might have been the british island of saint helena. In 1855, the island of Saint Helena saw
1,100 cargo ships stop at its ports. and Just a few decades later, only 288 ships passed through Saint Helena’s ports.
This massive reduction of ships passing through britains south african colonies helped cause one of the worst economic declines in Britains history.
This was called the Panic of 1873, and in Britain this caused a recession that lasted 6 years. In fact, this 6 year period is the longest contraction of an economy in history… even longer than the great depression of the 1930’s.

This was my reasoning, and likely why Israel can lobby for more military aid so effectively.
This also sparks some thought as to why building the new 'silk road' is so critical for China. By building a new trade route with Europe, it will position itself protect itself from American imperialism in the Suez canal. Israel is too untrustworthy for the Chinese not to consider building an alternative, and totally isolated trade route.

The help "we" are hoping for...101-201!
From a vet, asking all "we" millions of other Veterans, to get organized, to provide a backbone, (for other folks to cling to), into a contingencies management system, for consolidating and coordinating resources... To mechanize and empower demos-kratos within our Republic...
Like it was once done, at the beginning of this Country... But we got lazy, and let it fade; but, "we" can all, now, bring it into a 21st century context, to restore "We"! ( Or, dare I say, to finally get our act together, as a strong "democracy" within our republic / representative system!)
Folk; this system just lays there, unused, because most of the "we" of us don't know it's available to us, and "we" haven't, therefore, learned how to employ it!
It got lost in progress, as the "musters" / gatherings of purpose, thus, disappeared with them!
Folks; those gatherings were where democracy lived, within and among neighborhoods, and to far without... (note: for example, the Committees of Correspondence, between women's groups, and many others...)
What were they talking about, before... during... after... " Formations"??? (current events, voting, commerce, security, transport, waste disposal, emergency systems, contingencies management...)!?
( I recommend, this quickly be instituted into a non-profit, liaison / logistics corp, built on a matrix organizational structure, to assure, neutral / objective services!
However, we need a "site" to work through; one, "we" will each be proud to be a part of, as borne into members, as "We"! Globally!!!
Note: to all who have served in FET, "We" needs you to get us operational... Among all women; and, as well, among the rest of us "poor slobs"!?)
      Call it: [DES-S-S (P/m)]
"Disaster and Emergency Services" ..... Support ... Systems"
      ..... ( Projects and Missions )
      {"DES" = "Professional Responders"}
{"DES" - Support Systems = the rest of us, with those in DES... = "we"... becoming... and being... "We"... Potentially!!! = "civil defense!"... The way it's meant to exist!
      Dare I state; this system is our missing piece; and, this is why "we" individuals feel powerless; thus, when "we" get it "on-line again, "We" will fix issues!}
Note: FEMA recommends that all communities maintain secondary EOCs (operations centers)!
      "We" can use this...
      To build a...
      "manual back-up system"!
      Make it "the 4th Branch"...
      ... Within the Republic...
      ... "... for... of... by... !!!"
      ... Make "we" ... "We" !!!
... This system will help us do our part!
Also; bolt it, into academics ...
... To match the FEMA goals of Graduate Degrees, in the "emergency management" / (contingencies management) fields!
... In fact, this system must be taught, again, the way it once was... But; in a 21century context!
... It mechanizes and empowers demos-kratos, as a continuous function, of the republic!!!
... Back then, one could be fined, if absent, late, and / or were not properly equipped, regarding "formations" (formal gatherings / "musters").
... Thus; in essence, "democracy" ended up being enforced !
... Tell me, did not "democracy" happen there, among them... whether deliberately, or by chance?
... This system could provide opportunities...
... For all "age groups" , grade levels...
... Preteens... Teens... Young Adults... Adults... Elders...
... (e.g., In- Service Learning, Internships...)
"A well regulated [contingencies management system] being necessary to the [national security posture] of a free state, the right to [employ a Swiss type system won't be] infringed!"
      [ Please note; I've never owned a "firearm"! ... Yet! ]
Folks; this system is basic human survival... contingencies management...!!!
Dare I state; "We" are dealing with a hell of a lot of contingencies... And; far more coming at us!!!...
In a ship with no steering wheel, at the moment... With an opportunity for those in our engine room, to provide stability... Until "We" get our Bridge figured out!
      So to speak!
To mechanize and empower demos-kratos within a republic!
Vets are civilians, who happen to have military experience and training... All of which, are going to waste, and we could change that, quickly!
For most Vets, that oath we gave, to you and all, tends to rule deep, in the rest of our lives!
Vets have proven themselves, honorable and trustworthy, to be "Semper Fidelis" to our Queen... Lady Liberty, and Her ways!
... She needs us... Quick!!!... A basic workable platform... Among us all...!!!
... knowledge, education, training, skills, talents, wisdom.... !!!
... This is our only option, as opposed to "enforcers" ??? if "We" don't fix this... with, the others among us... Neighborhood s...
(Using the original 1775 systems, as the template, "we" must select our leadership, from the bottom up!!!... "democratically!"
We Vets won't tolerate anything smelling of tyranny...!!!... Most of us left the military because we didn't hold with bullies playing with their power!
... "We're" just civilians, who know things!)
And; by the way, FEMA is desperate, for all citizens, to be actively involved, in our Community's "civil defense" system, anyway!
So; ""Welcome!". You're already born into it, whether you like it or not... So; learn it, and use it...!!!
"We" needs basis neighborhood incident management!
      Mitigation, preparedness, response, recovery!
      Capabilities!!!
NCB Warfare Recon (nuclear, chemical, biological)
      ... Detect, contain, monitor, decon!
(Please note: Back in my day, all Marines received basic training in these arenas, while a jungle awaited our turn, in its "feast!")
For now, and onward, "We" needs the structure of a military system (thus, starting with Vets), to install, a deep sense of professionalism, and dedication... In service to Our Lady Liberty!!!
Vets are a good place to start, to draw all other folks in... Kids... Mom's... Dad's... Elders...!
      (FET; "We" need you! Quick!)
[This is from my lifetime in "active and passive civil-defense", where I haphazardly found a way to do this, mostly from home, so it will be easy, convenient and perpetual, provided it's done properly... "By the book!". Folks; in 1989, I volunteered, to be the "Nuclear Preparedness Director", for my area, after having been involved in "civil defense", since my military days.
I learned, that no one had a clue!... So; I started digging, and found awesome stuff, which you can use!
I learned, the only way we'd have a chance, is by calling on Vets, for immediate capabilities, to get folks sheltered, and to maintain mobility, liaison and logistics!
I learned; if we're ready for something like that, then, we're ready for anything!
I learned; that people didn't want to hear it... Until... NOW !!!! This is our opportunity, to fix "We"!
To start from here, and get it right, using pieces from old templates. We have incredible parts to adopt and adapt!
Most of us "Boomers" are from an age when life got serious... really quick... !!!
... For me, it started when the "Berlin Crisis" pushed a need for ""civil defense" nuke preparedness... shelters with survival gear... food and water stocks...
... Hiding under a desk, or in a dark concrete basement...
... when JFK backed off the USSR, from Cuba...
.... Dallas... when we young folks took one through our hearts, too!!! And; that huge hole remains... And; in truth, we feel it, every day... Still.... Moreso !!!
... Because, until then, if only for a moment, there was hope... in leadership... for a new course...
I'm counting on folks like you, to help me to get this word out!
Note: from FEMA publications... "...civil defense is emergency management."
I prefer; civil defense is contingencies management!
Or, maybe better; civil defense is demos-kratos, through a contingencies management system, within representative government!
"We" can work with these basics, to build something solid, trustworthy, honorable, innovative, and impressive!
I pray to hear from you! I have 40+ years of stuff folks need!
It's like, I was out fixin fence, diggin a post hole... and there it was!
      This needs folks like you!
( Somebody; please... it wouldn't hurt, to get this info the hands of folks like: Oliver Stone, Michael Moore, Neil Furguson, Ed Snowden, Dana Priest, Biden, Tulsi (FET?), Bernie, and many many others...
"We" need them all, to make this right!
Folks; we need this system, anyway; so, why not get started, and get it right!
"We" need a site, and such (made by you educated / experienced folk), to help us connect... Quick!!!
Folks; I'm convinced this system will help us progress from....
"we"... ( feeling and being alone, in voice, and person...)...
      ...to...
"We" ( getting this system up and running... As a service to seeking truth... For worthy decisions from us... As demos-kratos within a republic... Again!!!)
      ..... to....
      ....... Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...... !!!!!!!!!!
I propose... Close your eyes, imagine, and spend some time meeting "Lady Liberty", in person...
      And then...
See how She's doing, come Christmas... as "we" live free, pursuing happiness... Starting with using what is readily available... By the millions... Vets... Scattered throughout neighborhoods... A place to start... Among professionals... Who know tactics and strategies... Against "foreign and domestic enemies"... Which includes germs, pollution (NBC Warfare), using a template, which was once recommend, by our CIA, for the USA!
With a basic contingencies management system s
Among us... With us... For us... By us !!!
      Standing by!
Give me a system to plug into!
Send me a message, when you have a proposal... A video... On; how we can do this... A system to build on!
Give us some back doors of liaison, between "average folk", so to soften the conflict between Titan governments!

You need to do some fact-checking before making incorrect statements like 'The Axis powers surrendered on September 2nd, 1945." When did Germany surrender? It certainly was not on the 2nd of September. Italy did not surrender on that date and neither did the Ottoman Empire. The first conflict was 1882 and the last conflict was 1967 = 85 years, not 150 years. Otherwise, the production values are high and the information is presented clearly - just need to improve the fact-checking.

sorry, but probably not the first time without going around Cape of Good hope. There was a previous canal which moved south-west from the Red Sea towards the Nile near Cairo.Ships would then sail north towards Alexandria. It was a longer route than the Suez canal, but still better than the south of Africa. It is thought the Ming Chinese were aware of this route, and even sent its ships along it about 1430.

With all those speculations on how it proved to be a good thing that the Suez was controled by the British forces during the 2nd World War, you could also speculate on how ,perhaps, the WW2 would not begeth what it was if the British would not be trying to squeez the world for their profits. (It is not like the Germans had nothing better to do then to turn into killer Nazis - there was a palette of reasons serving as a prerequisite to that transformation, and the scrupulous actions of the Brittish empire attempting for continuous world domination were a part of that palette of reasons)

I think you forgot the Spanish and Portugues? The Spanish discoverd the Americas in 1492, conquered the now Mexico in 1521, and began trading with Asia via Acapulco and Veracruz in 1565. The last ship from that route was made in 1813, after the English wised up against the Spanish, and literally destroyed the Spanish empire. When did the pilgrims arrive in the now USA? I am sure you had a small memory lapsed. Oh I forgot, the Spanish were the first ones to circunvent the world.

    {"DES" = "Professional Responders"}
{"DES" - Support Systems = the rest of us, with those in DES... = "we"... becoming... and being... "We"... Potentially!!! = "civil defense!"... The way it's meant to exist!
    Dare I state; this system is our missing piece; and, this is why "we" individuals feel powerless; thus, when "we" get it "on-line again, "We" will fix issues!}

The Suez Canal was important but even if the Axis powers took control of it earlier, it would of just delayed the war. Remember Germany had a limited supply of men, skilled workers, raw material and oil. Then Italians weren't as organized as their German counterparts and barely complimented the alliance, it was only a matter of time before the Axis power lost. They were out manned by Russian troops, out produced by American industry and out smarted by British intelligence.
