Arod - you were a great hitter. You got your bat up to speed behind you. Like all the greats. For more, click on the link below: ►linktr.ee/teachermanhitting
My 7th grade baseball coach taught that exact motion AROD tries to teach. I can't tell you how many grounders I hit to short stop in high school because of that coach's advice.
The reason A-Rod is teaching this way is because that was the hitting theory then. His motions are also over exaggerated while he is explaining. It was more about the feel of the swing. It is also "See it and Hit it." His swing looks different from what he is saying because his hands still feel to him and are still driving down but his body is naturally reacting to the ball with the arch of the swing creating an inside out swing on a lower pitched ball. Swing a bat and feel it instead of watching.
A-Rod said it creates a long swing but what he meant is it keeps your bat barrel in the zone a long time. Long swing, bat in zone a long time are 2 different things but I get what he meant
A perfect example of feel vs real. Arod really felt like he was hitting down but that feeling produced something completely different with his actual swing. The golf swing is similar in that regard.
And now try to feel and do what you see by lying barrel flat from shoulder. You get barrel behind ball by quick lower half explosive movement and hands are short to the ball and much more natural than broken weird angles shown on barrel drop videos.
@@neilflack1756 All sorts of stuff in the golf swing. If you’re slicing the ball you might try “feeling” like you’re swinging way in to out (too draw the ball) when in reality you aren’t swinging in to out at all. It just feels like it.
Never seen anyone so disconnected from what their own swing was doing than A-Rod. All he literally does is study video now for a living & apparently has never studied himself at the plate. It’s rather baffling. Keep up the great work Teacherman!
I have always had the theory that all the best baseball players in the old days apart from Ted Williams had no idea what they where doing and their power came from pure coincidence. I think that’s why the quantity of good baseball players has gone up so much recently. Instead of saying “make ur body like a rubber band and swing down!” And hoping things work out they are actually breaking down the swing and how every single muscle has a role in the baseball swing. U had joe random hitting .220 with one homer in his career because Major League Baseball coaches told him to swing straight down at the ball.
@@snowyfragrant6029 most players in the old days had real jobs in the off-season. Literally selling insurance and cars and stuff unless you were a superstar
You can't convince me that ARod wasn't replaced by a clone after he retired. 0 chance the guy on ESPN is the same guy who won 3 MVPs and almost hit 700 HRs
@eastsideirish1440 Ryan Howard had a nice swing as well and an extremely nice guy. My son attended one of his camps, and it was free as well. I took pictures with everyone and let the kids touch and hold his world series ring
I’ve been rehabbing and injury, and my swing has been messed up from not hitting in a year. I watched a few of your videos and done some of the drills. Now I’m back hitting the ball to all fields with power and consistency. Thank you!
Judge can do it because he’s a freak athlete 99.9 can’t do what judge does and it’s bad mechanics. He swings like this to get more lift on the ball in a small ballpark.
I was taught to swing down and hit line drives. A home run was a happy accident but the goal was always controllable, solid hits. It’s a different feeling when you make that solid contact.
Well the old man is a pile of shit teaching kids bad mechanics. Lets drop the back sholder and flick the wrist. This is like the worst thing to teach in baseball
The natural in anything never had to think about it so when you ask them to explain how they do what they do they're lost. It's like the introvert asking the extrovert how to be more social. Extrovert says " just be yourself ", because that is themselves.
Literally every coach I ever had taught me the swing down method that ARod was demonstrating, except for one. He was a former major league player and he taught something similar to Teacherman. Unfortunately I didn’t work with him long enough and I went right back to the old method
Amazing how much harder it is to be a pro pitcher now a days with all the video and modern tech and knowledge to help hitters make contact. Kudos to all the pro pitchers out there. Y'all have your work cut out.
Even though the golf swing is much different you can still see how the zone , lag and shoulder use is where power comes from and not just in your arms.
I think different types of approaches at the plate will affect the type swing a player has. Teaching all young players this new way of swinging, which is basically an upper cut swing, isnt ideal. I mean, the MLB will soon have a super minority of American talent. And this is just one reason why.
Love this video. My whole life I struggled with trying to make myself use that “swing down” approach since it was drilled in me by all my coaches, but when my mechanics got sloppy, I naturally would “tilt and swing” and had more success in doing so..then I would revert back to the coached technique and have less success
The old man is absolutely right. You want that barrel to stay in the zone as long as possible. And Judge’s understanding was spot on. Even if he’s late on the ball if his barrel is still coming through the zone he’ll end up going the other way. Such a simple idea but it can take time to get it right
With how mental the game is, being blissfully unaware of what he's doing might have been good for him on the field. Definitely not good for us having to listen to him on TV now
I still remember as a kid seeing in the newspaper that ARod went to the Yankees to play with Jeter and how cool that was. Steroids or not he’s always been my fav
Fairly certain this exact thing is in Ted Williams' book. Like, the people who were good at this were onto something, yeah there have been advances since then but some people have had an inkling of what was going on.
Chipper is the same way, he explains it the same way A Rod does but again swings nothing like the way he says. Its definitely a feel vs real thing but you would think they would have seen video of themselves swinging.
look at old footage of babe ruth, he does exactly what coach is saying, level swing thru the zone, no matter where the pitch is he kept the bat level. this maximizes good contact, if you're swinging up or down you need perfect timing, if it's level you can be a little late or a little quick and make contact.
I love that somebody finally edited the old man and judge together so that people can shut the fuck up because they judge coaching with their eyes and not the merits of the coaching
all of my coaches would tell me my swing was wrong when all i did was learn my swing from pros. it messed me up mentally at the plate and i started playing so bad i fell out of love with baseball. all the coaches told me to do what AROD is teaching.
There’s a difference between “feel” and what the eye sees. A-Rod was talking about how he felt is hands pull straight to the ball. However when done correctly the bat lags naturally to get on plane thus creating the angled to flat bat path. -a current player at Jax State University for cred.
I don't know about all of you, but I was always taught to get the bat down early in the swing, so you're swinging through the zone the maximum amount of time. This is also why I slice horribly in my golf game which my natural swing and I have to consciencely adjust every swing. Dropping the back shoulder to get the bat into "The Zone" also opens the face of the golf club.
I took batting lessons from MLB player, I don't play anymore but this is true. Contact the bottom 40% and you will blast that ball. You don't need your swing to travel upward at all
This is true and all if you’re hitting against someone who is throwing a lot of fast balls with a good technique of not showing what they are throwing. If you know what to look for when hitting against a pitcher, you can adjust your swing on the fly. You catch onto a sign or the way he’s throwing or positioning his arm. If I noticed an off speed pitch, I’m adjusting and seeing what that ball is gonna do, is it moving, breaking, then loading up and hitting a dinger lol
I haven't been into sports for over a decade but when A-Rod said he swung down I was like, "no f-ing way you swung like that". The guy is half a nimrod.
Yeah as others have pointed out this is feel vs real. I can attest to this. "Down to and up through" is what finally got my swing right, because my mindset was "down and quick to the ball, long and up through the ball," but when I would watch the tape, I was still creating tilt and coming up from under.
A lot of the time what you think your skin is different than the result. When entering the zone early as you are tracking some people tend to drop, hitting is a mental game and when arod thinks a to b he isn’t actually doing that but he tricks his mind into creating that signature Nike swoosh in his swing.
So my limited understanding is that the "downward swing" is not talking about the bat swinging down to the ball. Its about your hands go straight from your shoulders down to the ball which naturally puts the bat in the zone and limits the distance your hands and bat has to travel.
After being out of baseball for 5+ years, I honestly don’t know what to believe. I was taught the “chop down” approach and had an awful problem with rolling over and grounding out constantly - maybe that was the issue.

Right. The golf swing is full of exaggerated moves/drills to produce feel vs real too
Totally agree. He wanted to think and feel directly to the ball. I see a lot of young hitters laying it down early and have long slow swings.
