Mowing Tall Grass with DR Trimmer'

  • This is just a short review of the DR Trimmer Mower. It is not a comprehensive review, but rather me trying to cut some tall flooded grass.
    I am mowing thick grass using the premium strings on it and it does short work of the tall grass.
    The DR Trimmer Mower worked well in the grass. Last fall I used it on some dried weeds and it kept breaking trimming line. Once I got the strings on right it didn't break one in the time I shot this video.
    If it wouldn't have been in standing water this grass could be raked up for hay. (Even though it is a bit seedy)
    Please forgive the shaky camera work...it was difficult trying to run the trimmer and camera at the same time. ;-)

    My DR is 23 years old and still kicks ass. I was doing weeds/grass that retain water and had a mist in front of mine. It was so thick but only about 1' tall but I used a tank of gas on a 60x60' square. I also had my line at the lowest setting. Raped it good!

    Bought a DR last year, the trimmer cord is crazy tough. I cut along 100ft chain link and they do wear after a few trim sessions. Way tougher than my carry trimmer line.

    I have a question 1st. Were you pushing the DR one handed? I'm not a small guy 6'5" 254# and I can't control my DR when I try to push it with one hand. If you did, good job!
    My folks bought a DR in 91 used until my dad died in 06. I bought mine in 2000, still going. As you know they are not an everyday use machine but mine gets enough use. 3 acre fence line around the house, barn, hay barn, shop. The only thing I've had to replace is the Ball, and string of course. I maintain it, wash it, change the oil once a season, change the air filter when needed. In West Texas thats often.They are a great machine. Hope you have as much luck with you're as I've had with mine.

      Yep, had the camera in the other...as I said I like it so far as long as I am not cutting old dried tall weeds where the string breaks often...it still cuts, it is just changing the string so often...I bet the optional cutter head would work best for that application...Thanks for the comment!!

    Is the engine throttled down a bit? It sure doesn't sound like 3000 RPM and I don't hear the cutting line whistling. However, if it's cutting the grass to your satisfaction, that's all that matters.

    I have one of these. Be prepared for the original belt to stretch almost immediately. Replace it with something better. Otherwise it does ok. It certainly doesn’t do what the DR videos look like though. I’d put my Echo hand held up against it any day. I just like that I can push this.

But I don't know if they will stay with american made engine Briggs and Stratton engine or Kawasaki or Honda or what I have is a bad Tecumseh engine 6HP DISP: 195cc underpowered Murray Trimmer Mower High Wheel the carburator is not automatic without having to choking it all the time like the DR. @thepreparedchristian3147  Před 4 lety +3

      I normally use a mower, but last year was so wet, water was standing there when I made the video and a lot of the grass was over a foot tall...the DR is great for knocking it down...it even looked good enough to rake for hay if I wanted to.

    • @frankwess7235
      @frankwess7235 Před 4 lety +1

      Rob I think it depends on the situation. I like how the mower makes the grass look a little more even but you get clogged up in tall grass way to often. And as for the trimmer, it eats right through tall grass but I fell like the cut isnt straight cause the machine maneuvers through and with each bump way better then a lawnmower. If that makes sense.

    Hi, thanks for the demo! Which DR Trimmer model is yours? I have about 400' of roadside to cut along my property that borders a shallow drainage ditch. I cut it monthly now with a Stihl weed trimmer with a polycut head but it is a TON of work in 95-degree summer heat. Thought a piece of equipment like this might make the job go faster.

    • @thepreparedchristian3147
      @thepreparedchristian3147  Před 4 lety

      I have the smallest model...don't remember off the top of my head...as long as the weeds don't get dried out I think it would work pretty good...it is fairly light and easy to maneuver...if the weeds get hard and brittle you will break your line often.

      My neighbor friend had a Pro XL 8 HP Briggs and Stratton engine with a Beaver Chainsaw chains Blades 14 inches diameter cuts 4 inches trees bushes and oak saplings woody weeds and Hay I used it for a while on his property and I was sold on the DR. I soaked it precut in a plastic tub filled up with Premium PTEF protection Boat Wax polish and it works for me instead of using WD-40 Silicone Lubricant spray on the lines but there was no automatic carburetor choke on it I was hurting so much pulling starter string 20 times and TECUMSEH 6 HP engine and carburetor from china is bad so I gave up and from using it since 2004 to 2016 and mom hired True Value Miller's Hardware store Landscaping men since I have hurting my back and knees and Shoulders pulling out too much. I or the Murray Trimmer Mower from Home Depot for $ 350. Nope no way I can buying a Chinese engine ! I'm sticking with american made engine Briggs and Stratton engine 9 HP .

    I think people see what they want when they watch this video, but the truth is that these string trimmers SUCK! For the price you pay for them? Yes. They do not cut brush like mentioned here; they only cut tall grass. A lawnmower can do that. A high-end weedeater can too for the price of one of these, and both of those have other uses.
