    Dude! You just solved one of my biggest gripes with these sorts of comparison videos. The methodology here is actually statistically/scientifically sound for once. Any other way of doing comparisons is deeply flawed. You basically eliminated statistical error by doing it this way, and that's actually very innovative for this format.
    You're the man, Marques! Always finding ways to make major improvements and create the best content. You're a huge inspiration, and you've more than earned your place at the top.

    • @danishblunt9698
      @danishblunt9698 Před rokem +14

      Its still flawed. There is still no way of viewing the original resolution of the images. Tons of images will look way worse when you view them on different media.

    • @NautilusGuitars
      @NautilusGuitars Před rokem +40

      @@danishblunt9698 Sure, but it's about as good as you can get in this format, and the conversion needed to show them is necessary anyway.
      What I mean is that this is almost exclusively how people view photos taken on a phone, and with the vast amount of views the color/resolution error between viewing platforms is smoothed out to a nice average of how they actually appear to people.
      This isn't a comparison about how well phone photos will print for a gallery. It's a perfect representation of the vast majority of their use cases, being online viewing.

    • @danishblunt9698
      @danishblunt9698 Před rokem +5

      @@NautilusGuitars Quite wrong, it can be improved by adding a "view original resolution" also then by uploading said images on various platforms to account for platform specific compression.
      not only that but there is only 1 picture taken per phone which again is a problem as each phone processes images very different based on situation.
      The current format is absolute barebones at best and is hardly an upgrade over previous methologies used.

    • @NautilusGuitars
      @NautilusGuitars Před rokem +34

      @@danishblunt9698 Ok, first of all, you completely misinterpreted my initial point and went on an entirely different subject. I entertained it for the sake of argument, but you're adding way too much weight to this one specific, and quite unimportant, factor.
      As for my initial point, it was that the _methodology_ was sound. Not the means, the methodology. Meaning, the way in which the test were _executed_ instead of the means by which they were. Regardless of your opinion on the means of displaying the photos, the way in which the test was organized is sound, as there is a one-to-one comparison between each photo, allowing an equally weighted average score to each. there also wasn't "1 picture taken per phone". Did you even watch the video? There were three significantly different photos per phone.
      As for resolution, this is a nearly insignificant factor. Any photographer, such as myself, will tell you that resolution is quite unimportant for anything but large format prints and displays. Even then, we're rarely using the full resolution of even a low megapixel photo. Color, sharpness, separation, lens characteristics and distortion correction, histogram, noise, etc are far more important.
      All of these things are baked into a phones jpeg file. The vast majority of displays will reproduce these qualities faithfully enough for very low error results. All phones use sRGB. All displays use sRBG. Nothing inherent about the photos will be altered by having the resolution changed. Resolution/size is _not_ what determines the quality of a photo. The vast majority of people voting in this test wouldn't even be able to tell the difference between full or lowered resolution versions of these photos on the displays they're viewing them on. And again, none of the qualities that are important would be effected if they could.
      a 32mp photo with clipped blacks/highlights and bad color will always look worse than a 10mp photo with a good histogram and good color.

    • @danishblunt9698
      @danishblunt9698 Před rokem +5

      @@NautilusGuitars You went defensive quite quick. What you're trying to do now is to somehow talk yourself out of it. Displaying the pictures in certain ways, multiple images taken and different converted images are still part of the methology. You're just trying to redefine at this point and honestly, you look silly in your attempt.

      flaws
      How about color accuracy? In those pictures I can see some colors look more kind of neon looking than others. This test is cool but some flaws. A person would have to be at the location to physically compare real colors with the photo colors. Also, you have people voting on more than likely incorrect display calibrations on various devices. So colors, brightness and sharpness can all be vastly different. It's better to get several people at a location to do this on correctly calibrated displays with the actual colors from the real life items to compare too.

Of course, it isn't perfect by any means but this test is leagues ahead of any other review in other channels as camera comparison it goes.

    As a photography enthusiast, I noticed that the Sony performs how I would expect a prosumer camera to perform. The colours were neutral, exposures were pretty spot on in preserving highlights/shadows with no artificial bokeh or dramatic HDR. This means DI workflow might be similar to an A7/R/S camera for e.g. and if really needed I think a photog won't mind mixing a few snaps from the Xperia and the main cam since they are harmonious. Some for me where instant winners, with one being obviouslyt better then the other, but some were so close I had to almost pixel peep to try to pick a winner. What if we assigned a weighted score based on how long it took to pick a winner, with the ones that were extreamly close being a lesser weight than the ones that are easier to pick? Maybe with a time cap, so if some one takes too long to pick assume they took a break instead. Maybe something to consider for next years people choice awards (if you do it again)

    Bought the Pixel 6a after watching this and am really glad I did.
    During the new year week we took a bunch of daily and nightly photos with my 6a, my wife's S 21 Ultra and her cousin's iPhone 14 Pro and ended up using most of the 6a photos at the end.
    It lacks the sharpness in very few photos but outperforms in most.
    Night time selfies especially are where it wins by a landslide. The Samsung and iPhone night time selfies were pretty much unusable.

      Hardly. Interesting, thats all. Some people prefer the opinion of professional photographers, not what people have become used to with todays smartphones and just vote for what they're familiar with. Most images taken with phones these days have filters which over saturate at the expense of accuracy and lossy data, which wouldn't cut it with a decent standalone camera.
