- This week was a long one! Not only did Marques, Andrew, and David discuss the killing of Google Podcasts (shocker), Spotify using AI to translate podcasts, and iPhone 15 overheating issues, but they also go over everything from last weeks Microsoft event and the Meta event. Techtember is ending with a bang and the busy season rolls right through into Techtober with no break! The gadgets just keeping coming. Hope you enjoy!
Editor's Note: I messed up Andrew's score in the video graphic. He actually has 5!

Wait, what? Can someone explain to me?
Who is David there are only Andrew and Marques right
marques was vibin the entire time during this episode!
he likes to pod
I don't think I've heard him laugh so hard, either. My man had a spark today

Good to see Andrew finally reach 9 points in Trivia
Big comeback!
@@Manganellia1omg hiii!
I think a big thing that was missed in the photo discussion is whether the photo is still an accurate representation of the moment. If your kids are being demons and it's impossible to take a picture of them all looking at the camera it's a bit weird that in a few seconds you can have that picture and post it to the internet. It's another way in which the "social media world" makes things seem nicer than they actually are. It can reinforce the feeling for people that other people have a better life than them cause their kids actually look at the camera and behave.
This, that segment was a bit frustrating.
Also when taking large group photos it's impossible to get everyone with their eyes open/smiling properly so it's common to edit a few takes together so everyone's looking their best
Like Adam said, I'd rather they do this than the weird AI manipulation from Google IO
Not sure why this bit was such a philosophical issue for them lol
That’s a very good point. I like where you’re coming from with this take.
There's a difference between "all kids are being demons" and "the variables of multiple people (especially kids) increase for a single frame"
If all your kids are going nuts this feature isn't going to do anything since it needs a good picture from that moment to replace. It's there for moments where a kid blinks, or a bug flies in someone's face, or someone sneezes. Small accidental moments.
Also Google always lets you save a copy of edits, so this feature doesn't even mean you have to delete the silly ones. Just gives you the opportunity to stitch a photo together.
Wedding photographers who take family photos do this all the time. It's just hard when you have multiple subjects
@@Manganellia1it’s basically autocorrect for faces and I’m here for it!
I get excited every Friday morning to see this.
AI podcasts are starting to look really good.
Another Friday, another podcast, this is literally the highlight of my day🙌🏾
The paper clip and floppy disk thing about how kids these days don't know what they are reminded me of this article I published in my Ph.D. where we interviewed college students and ask them to identify the objects in computer icons. One of the kids "identified" the floppy disk as a fridge! When we asked him why he thinks it's a fridge, he said "well, that's where you save things!" lol
Almost 2h podcast 👀 it's going to be fun
Brilliant opening line! Steel Ball, neuralink, your head
I think a good question to ask about the whole face swap thing is: Are you trying to capture a moment that happened, or are you trying to capture a memory as you remember it?
It's fundamentally the same problem I had growing up with family photos! Why are we taking photos where everyone lines up and smiles instead of taking photos of actual moments as they happened? This strikes me as the digital version of doing that, just easier.
always love checking in with the boys
You guessed it! It's the start of the weekend now in the UK! So happy for the weekly dose of WVFRM!!! :)
Am I the only one who first scrolls to the end of trivia to see how Andrew did, then come back to the start?
I don't know if I like or dislike this...

@@Waveformdidn’t Andrew end with 5 points in the last round? Somehow the number says 9 this round. Known issue?
You know it’s Friday when there’s a new WVFM Podcast Episode #Friyay 💯🔥
I love that super funky intro and it's so nice marques is putting his team on like this 🙌🏽
The photo face swap thing is an interesting topic- personally I think its fine if its sampling from the same moment, because it makes a photo closer to our memory of the moment, which is ultimately what we want to capture is how the moment felt. We remember smiling and laughing and everyone enjoying, we don't remember than 1ms moment where John was smiling, Ted was picking something from his teeth, Emily was mid-sneeze... we want the moment where everything and everyone was at their best and how we actually reflect on that experience. The little nuances might get lost, but what are you doing with a family photo? Are you trying to make a documentary of that exact moment, or capture a memory of how it felt to be there?
Thank you!
Also based on Google's history of photo editing, it'll most likely save as a copy after so I'm guessing you'll still have the burst of photos and ALSO get the stitched one!
Also a good point 😮!Thank you
Yayyyyyy, it was a great review you dropped yesterday too!
I'm starting to get excited about Friday not bcs there's weekend coming, but because there's the podcast ❤
The intro was so good and relevant, that I immediately screen recorded that part and put it as my WhatsApp status. LOL
Finally the new podcast episode has been released
Poggers 🎉🙌
Seeing this pop just made my day 😅 THANK YOU
128 GB Quest 2 is $299USD now, which is an upgrade from the 64GB version for $299 at launch. Quest Pro's remaining advantages are the internally tracking controllers (tracks accurately regardless of occlusion), 12GB RAM and eye tracking. Eye tracking is the major one in terms of spatial computing and the future of VR interfaces. The double tap passthrough feature has been available on the Quest 2 for years now as a safety and convenience option, so I don't think the feature itself is a response to Apple. Although the new animation on the Quest 3 might have been Apple "inspired".
Thanks! Someone to correct all the biased opinions on VR and MR. Big difference between what the quest pro can do and what the quest 3 will. Also I have never felt any latency on the passthrough of the quest 2. Just a bit of latency will be enough to get you dizzy.
I love the philosophical conversation about pixel face swap 😂
Nice long ep this week! Have a great weekend, y'all!
Friday is blessed on podcasts. So many good ones come out and I listen for them all weekend long :)
I love it when VR news is featured in this podcast
Why? They are usually uninformed. Every time you just notice that since they are not interested in the technology they are super biased in the whole topic. Pro and quest 3 have the big difference of eye and face tracking, as well for tracking cameras in the controllers. Quest pro was never intended as a gaming headset much like the apple vision pro.
I have to mention the music slowly fading in before break is dope.
I remember when Apple killed iTunes by separating it into separate apps (music, books, podcasts, etc.) and I found it actually to be successful. iTunes at that point had been so muddled by everything it was trying to do, so that separation actually helped streamline audio content for Apple and makes it so much better and clean.
Andrew, I'm totally with you in regards to the group pictures. It is really not that different from HDR pictures, just instead of combining exposures you're combining poses from the same moment. Definitely not a problem, and rather a great feature. And if you have a issue with that, then don't use it, solved! And, for the record, I love film photography. They are just almost different media at this point... Both being pictures anyway, one digital and the other analogue 🤷♂️
Since you shared the news of Google podcast going away during the episode I switched to CZcams music and I'm definitely enjoying being able to consume this in video or audio. I guess maybe I won't be too sad about Google podcasts going away. Lol
Great watch as per 👊🏿
Always find some peace listening to this in the evening
I normally listen to you guys on Google podcasts because it comes out earlier
No 15 here, but during the beta testing for 17, on both the 13 Pro Max and iPad Pro 11, there would be random times during general use the device would jump to around 100F or more then after a few minutes drop back to normal. Never have identified why and why I suspect it is a software issue. I have not seen this under iOS15 or iOS16. I also noticed that the high temps consumed more battery.
This. I've noticed the same trend with WatchOS10
Interesting.
Wonderful and happy new year
Thanks for sharing it. ✌️
Thanks for coming over Nick .. much appreciated.. if it’s dry tomorrow gonna road test gloves 👍🙏
7:30 I wonder if having each of the audio tracks from each podcast host run through AI translation independently could preserve the overlapping and back-and-forth in a way that trying to only translate the final combined audio track couldn't do
My name is Victor, so I was doing some laundry, and I had my phone to the side listening to the podcast, and all of a sudden, Marques said "Victor" and I was so spooked. I just responded, "Yeah?" 😂
Google dropping podcasts makes me seriously consider going back to iPhones. Podcasts is the only app with a painless way to at least stream on a computer and maintain your play history. YT Music is really annoying since when I sub an artist their music videos start showing up in my CZcams feed. Google seems to consider this a "feature". I'm definitely a fan of single purpose apps.
Hey, great episode as always.👌😁 Just so you know, the source on the Ray-Ban insert says Microsoft instead of Meta. 1:27
Finally new episode I'm addicted to this Thanks mkbhd team❤
1:33:00 or maybe the whole idea of transparent mode being adaptive is actually just super useful in general
Can't wait for the Quest 3!
My personal experience with the iPhone 15 Pro Max has been great so far. I upgraded from the XS Max though so it’s been a while. On an average day my battery life has been great. I’ve started charging it every other day because at the end of the day it’s only at 70-80 percent. It’ll be interesting to see how it is on heavier use days, but for me the battery was a huge upgrade
(I also don’t use instagram and I haven’t experienced the overheating issue)
Been watching since just MKB and love all their content. I don’t know why everyone says David and MKB sound the same.Awesome work guys love the Content.✌️💯
Best part about Fridays! Love the HTC cha-cha-cha lol, I've never laughed so hard
Did anyone else notice another David behind David in the thumbnail? 😂
it's his digital twin 😅
It’s from “Microsoft leaked the future of Xbox” thumbnail the week prior
I like and appreciate your knowledge, your videos explain it very well
The "great analogy" was *chef's kiss* lol, I'm loving my 15 Pro so far. Don't regret the upgrade at all, this feels like Apple has peaked in their hardware and software, aside from a some minor heat issues which like you guys said should be ironed out sooner than later then quickly forgotten. Great podcast as always!
I think the reason the 15 pro is breaking is due to a slight gap between the frame and the back panel. If you pay attention, you see Jerrys finger leave an impression where he pressed. This might be because of the new "repairable" design. The glass is supported around the edges but theres space in the middle . Like pressing against glass on a flat surface, no effect . now lift that same glass a couple mm on both ends and press. The glass will flex in the middle and eventually break
There is a hole in the supporting aluminum backplate where the wireless charger coil is
That's probably the reason
Hello to the WVFRM Podcast crew!
When you where talking about the application of mixed reality and got to the point of the device directing its user during a repair- i think thats what microsoft did with its mixed reality headset in coorperation with airbus or another airplane producer- to assist assembly/repair because airplanes are very complex pieces of engineering... so i think there are already applications present.
Greetings from Germany
I love watching this podcast so much
Hearing Andrew cuss and be upset is one of the funniest things in the world 😂😂😂
Wasn't expecting a mention of what I can only assume is the Solomon Pond Mall, but hey great place, only mall in the state I've been able to find a Cinnabon
The issue with the cracked back glass is that the glass is no longer bonded to the hardware, the QI coil is bonded to the glass and now there is a slight gap between the back of the QI coil and the mid frame, so if you put your thumbs right where Zach put his and push really hard you will be able to flex the glass enough to break it.
At last!!! My Friday can begin.
Best day of the week is podcast release day ❤❤, keep up with great work. When will we see another podcast about tech in car, motorcycle industry 💪?
55:38 Love the way Andrew blew the whistle on frontline workers!
Funny short would be having David sit on the other side and dubbing Marques’ voice over it for the double David convo.
The Pluto moment was very funny 😂😂.
I'm glad Ellis made that hot take because I noticed that too with my first gen airpod pro and I noticed it did that automatically already. So I was confused when they announced that as a "new feature"
Surface Laptop Studio is nice on outside but a nightmare to get inside, the most memorable stuff from those review videos are the repairability of that laptop, the glue is so thick like it's a one way disassembly operation.
My 15 pro max has/had an issue that I haven’t seen anyone talk about. It was restoring so it was warm, which is normal, BUT I had it on my MagSafe vent mount and it was fogging inside the camera lens. If I could post a picture on here I’d show you but yeah. I’ve never had that happen before and I don’t know why it did. Any thoughts?
*THANK YOU* for keeping the time under *three hours* (unlike another tech channel's podcast that I won't watch (live) until it's time-stamped) 😖🤭
Adam's example at 32:15 is perfect. I think people are thinking too much into it. It's a feature I constantly hear would be useful for family photos.
Meta and AI in the same sentence scare the sh*t out of me. It's also funny how they didn't say the word privacy once but who is surprised? Another great podcast!
How does meta scare you more than Microsoft or Google or Amazon?
@zaqstvnsn4633 Meta's core business is learning every moment of your life, including figuring out who you know. I've had some creepy suggestions for people you may know. That is less true with the other companies you mentioned. Google does some of what Meta does for it's business, but nowhere with nowhere near the same detail and personally identifying info. Microsoft and Amazon are even further from that, ie you are not their primary product.
Scary and also funny
The pixel fold sort of had something like the iPhone 15 overheating thing for a little while.
I'm not sure which update fixed it but I haven't had that issue with my fold for a while.
Assuming the iPhone 15 issue will be fixed with some sort of update?
I think photos that are imperfect are the best part - I hope AI doesn’t make us too obsessed with audited perfection. The imperfections are perfect
That Yellowstone hat 🔥 reminded me how much i missed Bozeman..
the intro is the best 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
“…and Tom Brady won’t be in two lawsuits” was the funniest remark ever! Thanks, Durvid! 😂
Okay toward the end of the pod now… I gotta say my original pair of rayban stories have actually been way more clutch than I initially thought… they went under water briefly in a lake with me once, have been dropped several times… and yet whenever I need them to… they function as a good pair of “headphones” the video and picture aspect has always worked great and they are just a cool pair of sunglasses too overall if I had to pick a piece of tech I’ve really been pleasantly surprised at over the last couple years.
21:38 but if the frame of the device gets dented and that dent pushes into the glass, glass doesn't bend especially not when the frame hits it square on its edge.
Almost 2 hours?? Didn't even listen yet but keep these long ones coming!
22:15 It's great when people use specialized tools to test things but I need to also know how the scale from those tools equate to my everyday life. Mohs Scale: is a thumb tack a 2 or a 3? are my keys a 5? what if one of my keys has a silver color and another has a brass color should i keep my keys away from my phone screen? If I do then how relelvant is the Mohs scale in the first place? If im just going to baby my phone.
wake up from west coast, check the notifications , new episode released, perfect Friday beginning…🎉
The mixed reality ping-pong challange sounds interesting. I don't have much to compare it too but I was impressed be the PSVR2. Would be interesting to see how it and the Apple Vision Pro compare just in terms of latency.
I guess the line is, what the software is fixing. When you guys talked about HDR, it was just fixing the camera sensors inability to see diffrent exposures at the same time. It fixes the lack of dynamic range in the sensor which your eye can actually see all of the details in the scene at diffrent brightness levels. Or in film Photography example. While editing the colors, you are just fixing the physical limitations in the scanner or the chemichal process. But when you edit out someone in the bacground or swap a face, you are fixing the real life. You are changing the moment.
And we saw that you've been testing S24 Ultra already....
The 10x zoom shot comparison from the review...
The reason why they haven't reintroduced clippy is the attachment symbol in outlook. By having a new laptop go for copilot you wont confuse that with the paperclip symbol for attachments. Continuity is a big deal.
This photo discussion is hilarious. Original "photos" had super slow shutters, so they took like 20-30 seconds. Are they not photos??
the audio for the iphone 15pro was indeed a banger, probably THE banger ngl
I’ve modified an image similar to what they’re talking about. About 15 years ago I modified a photo of a bunch of staff, but one of them wasn’t wearing their uniform. I then took samples from everyone else’s uniform To make the photo look unified. It looked pretty convincing afterwards.
Dont feel bad, Ellis, I've always wanted to have a conversation with that Pluto too. 😂
I'm a new iPhone user. Using a brand new apple account, my iPhone 15 Pro Max is getting insane battery. Like 5 hours screen on time and not getting lower than 50% battery. Pretty impressed. Maybe it's something with older accounts giving permissions to specific apps or services?
re:overheating maybe it’s a certain feature inside of react native that is causing it because that would also explain other apps, causing it randomly. my first thought when i heard of it was indexing. but on the 15 promax the only time my phone has gotten hot has been when charging or playing unoptimized games and streaming youtube at the same time
On the overheating phone thing. On my 14p, i always found using the camera unnaturally made my phone hot and my battery drops. Like i know its a regular thing but it shouldn’t be regular for my phone to be uncomfortable to hold and battery loss at like 2% every 5 mins.
So on my 15 regular, knowing that the chips are the exact same, i feel my battery loss is comparable to my 14p. So this echoes marques’ final statement being it should all settle down to be the same as last gen.
My thoughts are that yeah software instability on instagram/app developer end and ios17. But also that the newer chips a16 and 17 are just hungrier chips and just draw more power. Not alot compared to a pc, but enough that a tiny phone battery doesnt keep up well. And that iphones dont have a great cooling method.
youtube did add the podcast tab on channels. So I assume it will be an audio only
The intro has me in tears
Ellis missing for 34 minutes???!!!! That was torture guuuuys 💔
Absolutely love Pocketcasts!
Man, you know the episode is good when you don’t realized 2 hours has passed
Let the giggles begin 😂
I'm really sad Google podcasts is going away. That's my go-to app for podcasts, I've hated every other app
Factss...i don't know where to go now 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️ CZcams music doesn't work in my country
I've embraced AntennaPod
Is the source of the clip at 1:01:50 Microsoft?
The quest 3 is going to be a nice upgrade but they should've extended the battery life
they did they but also extended the power so nw we have the same battery life
The intro not being from the intro is the weekly paradox.
regarding Davids response with true film color from a lab print straight from a negative. i had a color photography class in college almost 20 years ago an we had to print our own color prints from negatives in a dark room. we had to manual adjust the colors ourselves during exposure onto color print paper. so we are already doing the same thing with editing color photos since then. its the same thing with burning and dodging in black and white printing. so i think photoshoping always existed since probably the beginning of photography itself.
