I feel like the official companies should do this. Make portable versions of their old console like PS1 and Xbox since we don't need as much space for old hardware like we did before

Several companies did try this a couple years back (PSTV, mini NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, Game and Watch), but most of the time it didn't sell well

Though it's evident that this concept hasn't survived, discs have a way less memory density than flash memory also getting your games as downloadable content is even more convenient.

To avoid lawsuit : ask for a ps2 and what the buyer pays is the conversion into a portable version. Done

@@chiarosuburekeni9325 Well, emulation might not work on the steam deck (which is unlikely) but the real hardware will always work.
@@awii.neocities that's true if you're looking to strictly play ps2 games but the deck will play a good percentage of those games+a good percentage from like 30 other consoles+ 95 percent of all pc games released up until this point at atleast medium settings. Projects like this are just starting to look like a waste of time because of it.

I don't get a lot of time to stay at home and game which is why the Switch and my Retroid Pocket has became my most played devices even if i own a couple of other consoles.
I enjoyed a majority of ps2 & ps3 games (at a friend's house) before realizing i never actually owned either growing up. I still hope we can get a ps2 focused portable console one day.

Really cool, I love seeing people do new stuff with old tech so keep it up. I still have my PS2 fat I got 19 years ago and recently learned how to install Free McBoot using a burned disc that launches uElf. Pretty crazy stuff, all without even having to open up my PS2! Though I did so anyway to give the laser a fresh clean.

Could you try creating a Portable "Docked Switch". If you would put the electronics from the Docking Station into a switch and use a custom screen you could get 1080p in handheld mode instead of 720p in normal handheld mode
I never knew something like this was even possible. This is amazing!
Recent homebrew developments include the MX4SIO project, which allows for game loading from an SD to memory card adapter. Loading times are significantly faster than the USB drive and help reduce FMV stutter.

You should solder an M4XSIO/MC2SIO memory card internally to the main board instead of using the usb to load games. You could just have the SD card slot sticking out the side like a PSP. This method is faster with better game compatibility as long as you use the right version of OPL.
Isn't the MC2SIO open source too? If so, he could technically redesign it however he needs it to in order to make it clean asf

Great mod! I do have a question regarding an updated revision. Since there are versions of the slim PS2 that still have their pinouts for the hard drive, have you considered doing a "hard drive" version (instead of USB) but in place of an actual hard drive, convert over to SD (via IDE-to-SD adapter boards)?
would make loading times a lot faster, and using a slim ssd to ide converter would make directory listings instant.
Love it, this is so cool. Makes me want an official Sony handheld even more now, hope they try to make another once the steamdeck releases.
Problem is that Sony didn't treat their previous handhelds with such care as Nintendo does with theirs. That's why they failed and are unlikely to return.
