  • In this episode we go on a New Orleans French Quarter tour of Jackson Square and the St. Louis Cathedral which are the heart of the New Orleans French Quarter. Jackson Square was part of the initial design of New Orleans in 1721 and was originally called the Place d’Armes. In honor of Andrew Jackson’s service during the Battle of New Orleans as part of the War of 1812 the recently renovated Place d’Armes was officially renamed Jackson Square in 1851. The Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France, also called St. Louis Cathedral, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans and is the oldest cathedral in continuous use in the United States. It is dedicated to Saint Louis, also known as King Louis IX of France. Saint Louis Church was built in the 1720’s and in 1788 the original church burned to the ground and a cathedral was rebuilt in the space in 1794. In 1834 the cathedral began a project to renovate, rebuild and enlarge it and when the project was completed in the 1850’s there was little of the 1789 structure remaining. Jackson Square is flanked on each side by The Pontalba Buildings which were built between 1849-51 by Baroness Pontalba to form the two sides of Jackson Square with Parisian-style row house buildings. The two buildings on either side of St. Louis Cathedral are known as The Cabildo and The Presbytere which are now part of the Louisiana State Museum. The Cabildo was built under Spanish rule between 1795 and 1799 and was the seat of the Spanish colonial city hall which was the location of the Louisiana Purchase transfer in 1803 when the USA took possession of New Orleans and the Louisiana territory. The Presbytere was designed in 1791 to match the Cabildo

So glad you did this video today when we went to new Orleans we went to this square and took a horse and carriage ride round the city stopping for a iced daiquiri.
I remember seeing that church thinking it was like a Disney castle 🏰.
Do they still have the horse and carriage rides .

Yes they still have the mule carriage rides but they seem to mainly be running on the weekends right now as weekdays still don't have that many tourists. We have French Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest scheduled so that should bring a lot more visitors into the city so hopefully that will get tourism back up. Most businesses are still having challenges with staffing and so many places still can't fully open back up as they simply can't find enough staff to hire. During the weekdays it is VERY easy for me to find free parking spots in and around the French Quarter while during normal times that usually is very hard to do. Restaurants that in normal times are very hard to get reservations at have also been much easier to book last minute. So it is an interesting time to visit and to live here these days and have such easy access to so many places that were harder to visit in the past.

@@lizallison324 We FINALLY just got rid of the mandatory vaccine passport requirement to go into bars and restaurants in New Orleans!!! So for now at least things are more normal other than the huge inflation from petrol prices and everything else from the ongoing situation in Eastern Europe. I saw Munich was considering cancelling their Spring Festival because of the uncertainty but Oktoberfest still seems to be a go. My brother's family just got back from Austria and Germany and they found it VERY restrictive in those countries still so that doesn't encourage me to want to visit anywhere like that or with still having to wear a mask for the entire flight over the Atlantic Ocean. Jazz Fest tickets really also got expensive this year but we do have a "locals day" where we can go for $50 so that might be the only day I end up going. They used to have a great deal where they gave you very discounted tickets to go and sample all the food and give the vendors reviews and rating scores but that doesn't happen anymore.
