Crosby Nash BBC - Guinnevere (2 of 5)

- These videos are from a September 11 1970 half hour television performance Graham and David did for the BBC.
It was right after CSNY had finished their famous...or infamous... four way street summer tour. with stories of epic melt downs and cosmic feedings between them all, the all star endeavor which had only began two years prior had all but imploded on itself.
Fortunately, all of the guys didn't abandon their relationships all together. Neil recruited Stephen, David, and Graham for backing vocals on After the Gold Rush and Harvest. Crosby invited, among other amazing musicians, Nash, and Young to sing and play on his consummate album If I Could Only Remember My Name.
(Interestingly, of all the musicians David invited to play on his album: Nash, Young, Jerry Garcia,Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart,Bill Kreutzmann, Jorma Kaukonen, Joni Mitchell, Grace Slick, David Freiberg, Paul Kantner, Jack Casady, Gregg Rolie, and Michael Shrieve...missing was Stephen Stills)
Of all the members of CSNY David and Graham's relationship seemed to be the one that stayed most friendly. In these videos you can really see how jovial and genuinely humorous they were with each other and with their audience. not to mention their majestic vocal blending. (the two part harmonies, which sound like five part, on Guinnevere and Song With no Words are particularly mind blowing)
If you dig this flavor of Crosby and Nash i would recommend finding a copy of their 10/10/1971 live recording Another Stoney Evening if you haven't already.
------------------------------------------------
David and Graham play Guinnevere from the first CSN album; it's amazing to hear how well their voice blend. obviously the three part harmony on the album is out of this world, but it's almost another thing to hear just the two of them. voices dancing around like footprints on the beaches.
------------------------------------------------
"[Following the break up] Crosby and Nash embarked on a successful acoustic tour accompanied only by their own guitars and piano, captured for the document Another Stoney Evening.
On tour, Nash and Crosby rediscovered the joy they had felt with CSN at first, minus the egotistic in-fighting that had made the last CSNY shows so difficult. That enthusiasm led to the studio for their first album as a duo, a mix of abstract introspection from Crosby and concise pop tunes from Nash prosaically entitled Graham Nash David Crosby, which peaked at #4 on the pop album chart." - Hudba

I met him in 1973. We were on the same plane from SF to Santa Barbara. I was a twenty year old folk singer and loved CSN and Joni Mitchell. Got out of my coach seat went up to his first class seat and said "you probably get sick of hearing this but I love your music" He said "I never get tired of hearing that" and invited me to sit in the empty seat next to him. We talked until the plane landed. He was gracious and kind to a star struck young fan. One of my best memories.
What a great story ! I remember '73 quite well. The year before that, in '72, I had hitch-hiked from Chicago to L.A. and was living in a commune in Huntington Beach, CA.
I envy you so hard man! ✌️
Thanks for sharing your fabulous memories. RIP, David...
Great story! That’s a memory I’d hold on to hard!!
Amazing story❤❤❤❤
I miss melody, harmony, and lyrics that could pass for actual poetry. Timeless.
unlike the dross churned out today
@@anthonyhudson3136 Had to look up the word, but hell yeah...major drossage, dude.
Jace: 'drossage' is a great word and so applies!

I heard you left us today. RIP David Crosby. In 1969 I was 12 yrs old. Thank you for being in my life.
I was only born in the early 90's still my father used to listen to this song all the time when I was still very young. Time erased or conceiled those memories from me, life had its hard changes and for many years never did I hear this song again. Some time ago I found all those old vynils he used to play and I can't discribe what I felt when I heard this song after so many years...suddenly it all came back, all those memories all those small precious moments...and my father.
I was a 90s kid too raised on the 60s Cheers man those were the two best decades for music
Its nice when music can reunite u with your father
Beautiful story. Thanks for sharing it.

RIP Croz. It’s hard to imagine a world without your voice in it. So influential and talented. You will be so missed 🤟🏻
I was at this recording......our youth club got BBC tickets.....magical....Crosby was so funny and totally stoned !
This is so cool to hear! Do you by chance still have the original ticket stubs?
Crosby lived stoned ❤. I miss him. So amazing!
Wow 😊😊
This song is just ethereal and his voice is absolutely amazing. I come back to this song ove and over again. I'm not into pentagrams, but I can listen to this song like forever. Imagine how many parents named their daughters Guinevere because of this song.
Today...of All Days I heard Sweet David Crosby has left Us. The Music this country, USA has ever Heard...have lost a singer from one of of the most melodic and creative acoustic/ vocal groups Crosby , Stills & Nash. DAVID CROSBY 💖🙏🏼 May You Rest quietly..Love You , BROTHER ‼️❣️
🙇
RIP David Crosby. You will always be remembered by All.
Quinnevere is one of the MOST Beautiful songs EVER!! I thought that in 1969/70, and still do in 2016. This rendition is particularly
fabulous because of its simplicity. No singers, or groups have ever been able to harmonize like these 2 gentlemen. This is a treat!!
And in August 2019
Totally agree
Do me a favor.. check out Miles Davis' version. The edit is 11min. and the original master is 26min. He does TREMENDOUS justice to it, for me to be seeing THE ORIGINAL VOCAL, AS I SEND YOU THIS! 12/2021
Know wer yer comion from son.My segway into this version was thru miles's guinnevere. So,Miles hears concerto de orange juice, does his gil evans version.crosby hears that.Does his version.Miles hears that, and dosent give Dave the good vibes.Dave goes fuck that miles.Miles kicks him out.Years later,Dave goes Aye maybe miles's shit is good.Pickerout.Take my wife.
I agree with all you say, except respectfully , one thing. Happily, another group did have harmonies this good, maybe even better, before CN. They were the original Byrds, with that same David Crosby usually taking the high notes of the three vocal parts. I recommend the Chimes of Freedom, Bells of Rhyney and Eight Miles High in particular for heavenly harmonies.
Rest easy David. One of the greatest voices to ever grace us. Harmonies absolutely unmatched. Got to see CSN play in 2015 and it is a memory I will never forget.
This isn't just music but an era put to song.
The atmosphere of the end of the '60s and the beginning of the '70s. Meadows, cedars and pines, creeks, streams, rivers, youth, freedom,
and life was fresh in every way
Our bond was familial, we referred to each other as brother and sister, we shared, we loved we aspired and when throughout a day of so many people looking toward us askance, we'd pass a stranger, yet, a fellow traveler and nod, hello friend.
Your so right !
I am 26 years old, I live in Canada with my girlfriend. It was my grandfather from France who introduced me to CSN&Y. we have been listening to the LPs on repeat since yesterday. beautiful music from a time that seemed happy and creative. kisses to all
David Crosby's voice is just incredibly beautiful.
...Thankyou David for being part of the Soundtrack of my life ......Rock In Peace ✌️ Brother...
So glad we have music like this to remember what music is supposed to sound like. Rest in Peace David..
R.I.P. David, thank you for the harmonies and awesome guitar playing. You will be missed but your music will remain 🎸 🎤🎶💔
This video captures the true chemistry they had. This magic is something that cannot be forced or manufactured. You either had it or you didn't. The only thing better then this video is seeing them do this live, which I had the please of many times back in the day...
Someone posted that there is no one doing anything at all like this now. It is so true.
Thanx David and Graham for the poetry and hauntingly beautiful harmonies.
real music. real talent. true vocals. will always take me back.
53 years ago! This is one of the best live versions I have heard record. I saw these two together live in the 80's. An unforgettable experience!
I was 10 in 1970..loved them then and now
the sad story behind the song :(
Rest in Peace, David Crosby. (August 14, 1941 - January 19, 2023)
No man born of flesh and blood has a more perfect voice than David Crosby-singing lead or harmony!
It’s truly a golden voice. The vibrato he has is very unusual.. everything about it is unusual, the timbre uncanny, simply perfection. Add to all that, the pure emotional connection , you have one of the great voices of all time.
Classic romanticism, 1970's version, as only Crosby could summon it. Thanks for sharing this moment in youthful deja vu.
As a old time musician myself, I am always in awe of this performance. Notice how "fat" their sound is, just two part harmony and two acoustic guitars- but they make a sound so full and lush it could fill a concert hall to the rafters. Mormon Tabernacle Choir, take notes... this is greatness.
tiffsaver Stills isn't even 'playing' per se :) Just muffled strums.
+Douglas Buzby That's not Stephen... it's Graham Nash and yes he's just muting the strums. Very complex piece to play. I know...myself and another lad used to play it. How Crosby ever came up with that unusual tuning has to be down to Banned Substances :)
toz71
Yes, thanks I meant Graham :) I agree, it was drugs that led him there. :)
He's doing it for the percussion.
Crosby's angelic vocal tone is a big part of this and Nash is "gone inside the tune".
I remember as a teenager I heard about the album deja vu, I went out and bought it and listened to it over and over again. CSNY has always been a huge influence on my life, their music is unsurpassed, never to be copied or equaled. Rest well David you're loved by millions.
I'm so rich for having this music in my life!!!
RIP David Crosby.
Such a beautiful voice.
RIP, Dave. I will forever love your beautiful music and golden lyrics. 💛
So incredibly beautiful and mesmerizing. Crosby is correct when he is critical of contemporary performers. They don't hold a candle to CSNY. So sad to think Crosby and Nash no longer speak to one another....sigh....
This is arguably my favorite song Crosby ever wrote. It's just so beautiful and the images his lyrics spark are fantastic. The man did A LOT of drugs, but his genius remained,...and remains, in tact. I'll take Crosby over the other guys, even though they are brilliant too. His songs have this "thing" about them that I can't put into words.
Stephen Stills is definitely the most talented musician of the three, however the harmony of the three (CSN) together gave them the magic of their music. When NASH was with CSN he and Stills were the gasoline powering their music. Sad that Crosby could never control his drug habits and tore them apart. Together they truly had a magic about them.
As a musician and singer... drugs do their job on you! 😂
Hauntingly beautiful.
I just have to say, that in all it's simplicity, this is by far the best live performance of any song I've heard, EVER. There are no fireworks, yet none are needed. There is simply something about the timing, control, musical inflection, nuance and above all, feeling. Somehow all of the elements in this just came together in such perfect harmony and concentration, without being too stiff or contrived. You can tell that they were both just "in the zone" on this one. This is pure music.
Here you can really hear how beautiful and controlled David Crosby's voice was when he was young. Even though Stills and Young wrote great, great songs, it was Crosby and Nash who really have the most polished voices, I think. You almost don't miss Stills' harmony in this version. Amazing!
This was always just David with only Graham on harmony. Done just this wsy at the 4 Way Street tour performance in Portland, OR, even though all members of CSN&Y were there and all did acoustic xnd electric sets.
That’s because Stills wasn’t part of the recording. It was just Croz and Nash.
Sadly, there will never be a harmony as great as this ever again !
Saw many, many CSN shows but on one particular night, in East Rutherford, they were on, incredible show, during which Nash and Crosby played this to a crowd that respected Crosby's request to stay quiet. I'll never forget it.
Such a beautiful medieval feel to this song, enhanced by two voices and acoustic guitars. Nothing more is necessary...
I am always amazed by the quality of the audio on these BBC recordings. I've heard performances by Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Crosby and Nash, and others, and the clarity, purity, and richness of sound is incredible--especially when you consider that this intended for broadcast on a television signal and for playback on 1970s t.v. sets that had terrible speakers.
Im agree! ..
I used to work in TV studio in the 70's and 80's and the recording equipment we used then was the best available in the world. Equal to any recording studio.
As Rick J.commented and to expand on it.. the Broadcast engineers were sticklers in every way about requiring the best and cleanest signal paths in their studio gear The consoles are the real unsung gems because of this. Most people think hi end recording consoles are the tops - Well some of them are, but you find a 70s broadcast mixing console for cheap grab it !
The crowds were amazing too. Just in awe of the performances and listening without any distractions. Same is true of the American audiences at those smaller venues.
Some of the best sound engineers in the world at the top of their game
Often Nash is mixed in at a volume that overwhelms Crosby's natural voice ... and the subtlety of David Crosby is lost. That seems to have happened more later on - when Graham seemed to feel he had to hold the concert performance together. But here they are balanced beautifully. Who can match the rhythmic patterns and pauses and long steady holds of his voice? Joni Mitchell. Only Crosby took her unspoken challenge to make the lyrics and mood variations deeper... until you hear the raga. These are songs that could go on for an hour... each with it's own rasa- or taste- a unique emotion.
Well said, to say the least.
Maybe not everybody knows what a mensch, and tremendous good friend Graham Nash is to David Crosby. When Crosby was in the depths of his cocaine misery, he sold the rights to his songs to fund the next round of blow-up. Well David ended up getting caught with a bunch of the stuff, and fame or no, was sentenced to jail. IIRC, he credits jail with saving his life. But that's not why I write today. When Crosby got out of jail, and got settled, it was revealed that (unsure of actual order of details) Graham Nash had bought the right's to David's songs, and held them until David was ready to resume proper ownership.
"No one should own David Crosby's songs but David Crosby", said Nash.
'Nuf Ced.
Have they healed the rift between them yet?
@@RU2AIM healed and burned again and again..at this point Crosby says Nash doesn't
talk to him anymore
@@RU2AIM Since it would have been BIG music news if it had occurred, no. There's no info beyond 2016 that I can find. That can happen with us old men. We get a stiff neck about things. Sometimes we're right. Sometimes we're wrong. But all in all, we wish to spend the little time left only doing that which makes our insides feel right.
@@RU2AIM Which one? It seems to be an ongoing affair. Of course, not so much with David and Graham ...I never did hear what their falling out was over a couple years ago.

captainsoul1953 That’s so cool!!! You witnessed something really special there.
It sure didn’t affect his beautiful singing by the way! Crosby’s voice is really something uniquely gentle yet strong,.. so pure, natural and resonant. I’ve never heard a voice quite like his..✨
true...his stonedness just added a great spark to the proceedings...he was very funny
@@captainsoul1953 I believe these were the Heroin years. He was still grieving the loss of his true love.
@@nmax696 I don't think he looks high here, just playing music with his spirit. He could also be thinking about something else.
Fly High Mr. Crosby. You’ll be dearly missed.
This is one of teh most beautiful songs ever written : the guitar , vocals
stunningly beautiful
If you have any kind of god given ear and understanding of harmonious perfection ,then listen closely because this is it. Two voices as one. Harmony unsurpassed....
Rest In Peace, David. Thank you for the glorious music.
Amazing that these two people could pull this off so wonderfully considering.
Almost 50 years later the song is just as magical as the first time I heard it.
This is what actually happens when you have truly gifted musicians who have polished their craft.
RIP David Crosby, music of my teens, one of my hero's x
I love this song. Crosby and Nash had the best two-part harmony ever.
phil and don everly ain't too bad either.
@@johniorio7951 Touché. And thanks for the zombie post reply, lol.
Simon and Garfunkel ran a close second.
The way they employ and dance around the limits of their range is such an usually interesting thing to do. The tension and poignant harmonies are absolutely breath-taking and mind-blowing. All in all, an ear-gasm.
I can't think of a more effortlessly beautiful and perfect singer than David Crosby. So smooth and tasteful on his own, with others his harmonies were heavenly. Thanks for the best bits of the Byrds and CSN / CSN&Y. Farewell, Croz.
two voices. two guitars...... magic.
Who was Guinnevere anyway? I had a girlfriend who had green eyes, golden hair and though she didn't draw pentagramsand her name was nanci this song always, to this day, makes me think of her.
EBDGAD Crosby originally tuning.
Jeffrey Bigger - Guinevere is Crosby's girlfriend who was killed in a auto accident shortly before the performance
It's actually amazing what came out of the Bay area in such a short time! Staggering music!!
I would sell my soul to sing like David Crosby. The tone is awe-inspiring and has the power to bring tears to my eyes and when coupled with Graham.... almost too good :D
Not ashamed to admit that I too cry regularly when listening to this work of art. The talent level is what get's to me. EXTREME talent. Heard Crosby's tone described as : Angelic. So true.
Maybe David himself sold his soul...lol never know
You can't sing like this without a soul and lots of it

Divine!
Came here as a result of reading Graham's interview after David's death. He said he now only wanted to focus on the good things about their relationship, referring to this performance and this song as an example.
My goodness, this is an amazing duet. Everything about it is stellar. And those early 70s BBC productions were top notch in every regard.
I was at this recording at the BBC...magical evening though Crosby was more than a little stoned...warm memories
There's a moment in this song where Crosby alters the lyric.."such a short day.." the expression on his face for brief second makes me wonder if he was thinking about his girl Christine Hinton, who died tragically in a car accident almost a year to the day of this performance.
no drugs needed to enjoy the beauty of this song,,, probably the finest blend of sound from two human voices,, no words to express how it makes me feel, just glad i have two working ears you know?
Saw Graham Nash in NYC 2 weeks ago, he looks great. Can't beat Nash and Crosby harmony, reminds me of driving Pacific Coast highway in a convertible in the 70s. Nothing better.
How inspired one have to be to write something so gorgeous? Oh David, thanks for all your blessed inspirations; you will be long missed
Read song was written about David’s girlfriend, who had passed in car wreck while taking their car to vet ❤
Hi, I know he wrote the song for three different women, one of whom was his dead girlfriend (another one was Joni Mitchell, and the last one supposedly Nancy Ross, who used to write pentagrams on the walls), as he admitted many times, but basically I meant melody and chords 🙂
This song has always put me in a contemplative mood. Scenes in my mind in black and white. Cold gray and misty.
+Jerry Campbell me too...well put !
Absolutely fabulous. What more can you say. LOVELY
This totally puts me in a dream state. Love this song.
I've been singing for 4 years.
Haven't watched this video in a while...
Even with years of practice and study I come back and still can't do some of what these two do are doing.
Their articulations, dynamics, volume control, and the subtle differences in lines are all there and performed masterfully.
And one of them is high af. Makes me feel like a potato.
There is no disputing these men have beautiful voices!
This Song brings me back to 1974 i love this song sitting in a mustang and in love with my friend great Memories of the 70s Janet Woodcock
The golden age of rock/folk music. You guys and a few others were the best.
Sublime harmonies on a great, classic song.
Crosby and his guitar are one of the same. He is so focused yet in another place. The way he can play this complex song while hardly looking at what he is playing is inspiring.
Love it, love it, love it!!! I was lucky enough to see CS&N at the Melbourne Arts Centre in 1991 with my father and uncle. It was truly the most impactful performance of my life. The music and vocals were perfect. My father introducing me to this music was one of his greatest achievements as a parent.
I feel free within myself while listening to this. Peace. :)
I was born three days before this was recorded. What can I say --- it was a great time to be alive!

A reflective wonder, floating on a wave of vocal harmony :)
I always preferred these two together.
Man I am so grateful for my father giving me an intro to their music. Seen them twice now (CSN & C/N) I just wish they would tour the UK more often. I know they are 'old" guys but they could teach all these young punks (Pete Docherty) so much about talent, lyrics, harmony and social action.
What a time period, really miss it. Music like this keeps me sane & helps me go back there in my mind.

I've met David several times over the years. He is decent man, great to talk to (loves the boats) and socialize with. I have a lot of repect for David particularly considering what he has dealt with in the past.
If you saw some of the folks who want to meet him (on the street outside a venue for example) you'd be wary of strangers too. There are some wack folks out there.
