Though Goofy always means well, his amiable cluelessness and klutzy pratfalls regularly embarrass his awkward adolescent son, Max. When Max's lighthearted prank on his high-school principal finally gets his longtime crush, Roxanne, to notice him, he asks her on a date. Max's trouble at school convinces Goofy that he and the boy need to bond over a cross-country fishing trip like the one he took with his dad when he was Max's age, which throws a kink in his son's plans to impress Roxanne.

Off the top of my head, here are several themes that I think most of us can identify with:
1.) Max's fear of turning into his Dad and embarrassment of ones parents in general.
2.) Max's guilt at changing the road map and crushing guilt of lying to your parents in general.
3.) Fearing your child will turn into a delinquent.
4.) Drifting apart from your children.
5.) Different Highschool Cliques/Not fitting in
6.) Focusing intensely on just one girl/boy. Not only that, but the movie shows how difficult we make dating as kids/teens. Before Max tries so hard to "impress" Roxanne, it's shown multiple times that she's already smitten with him, but he's so concerned about his own image that he can't see it. I'm sure some of us looking back would probably have been more confident if we had realized that our peers were just as awkward as we were.
7.) The pain of family road trips.
8.) A Parent not listening to/understanding their kid and conversely a kid having a myopic view of the world.
9.) Competing Parenting styles combined with Pete's exorbitant, blowhard lifestyle. Pete is a whole 'nother topic entirely. Multiple times during the movie his actions are motivated by putting Goofy down solely because it makes him feel better about his own failures as a parent/person. We've all known someone like that.
Look, I know this movie is more nostalgia than Gold, but on second watch, I was really impressed by the level of detail put into themes in the movie. This movie could have been another dud in a long line of Disney throwaways, but instead it has heart...and a bitchin' soundtrack...
Astute breakdown kudos
Well said
This movie only gets better and better with rewatches and in-depth analysis.
Absolute perfection.
Does all nostalgia have to be bad, though?
This is one of the most 90s cartoons ever. Back when even G rated movies had edge. And Roxanne was every 13 year old boy’s crush back in ‘95.
Don't forget Lola Bunny from Space Jam lol. Came out the same year if I'm not mistaken.
In hindsight, Roxanne was just a pretty face that was barely even in the movie. Not surprised she and Max aren't together in the sequel.
@@theguybehindyou4762 yeah, she came off pretty shallow in hindsight. Until she thought Max knew Powerline, she was ready to kick him to the curb for another guy. I don’t blame Max for lying to her. If she has no respect for him, why should he respect her enough to be honest?
@@RedRoseSeptember22 and Lola had boobs. It was only in subsequent depictions of Roxanne that she seemed to actually hit puberty. I would hope that makes a difference and there aren’t that many creepers out there.
i was 8 back then but still had a crush on her and lola
As someone who grew up in the 90's seeing this movie I was one Max's side.
"Come on Goofy, let your son go to the concert"
But now when I'm in my mid 30's and have kids I feel like I'm more on Goofy's side.
"Come on Max, you dad want to spend some time with you because he loves you"
So even though this movie is very 90's in some ways. It is really timeless in other ways, and really intresting that I can enjoy this as a kid as well as an adult. It really has so much heart and being well very goofy at the same time. Well written story makes a ton of diffrence.
I love it when Goofy gives Max a choice and he chooses the theater over fishing, it brings out even more drama.
I was obsessed with A Goofy Movie as a kid. I used to watch it all the time with one of my best friends growing up. We would watch it every single time I went to her house. :)
I missed it when it first came out and only watched it for the first time a couple of years back, yet it felt strangely familiar.
Just stopped what I'm doing to watch this. This is such a disney classic. I've seen it so many times and never gets old. I'll be singing along😂
Me too.
OMG same!
Ditto
Hey same here😁😉
Same! Lol 😂👏🏽👍🏽
Not only are Max and Roxanne an adorkably cute couple with her not just being another bland popular knockout. She’s shy and has some geeky friends. Also this film predicted Bruno Mars with Powerline!
Wish she'd had more development beyond being the protagonist's heart throb. Would be curious to see her as an adult. Heck, I'm curious to see what became of the rest of the cast!
@btamamura Sounds about right. Max was probably the only one keeping him stable (and Bobby, to a lesser extent).
I imagined a scenario where PJ and Bobby get expelled after Bradley exposed their drug habit to sabotage them as payback, and PJ runs away, unwilling to face his family, who doesn't know what becomes of him. Somewhere else in the country, he has a daughter with a girl he got on well with, but she dies in an accident and he goes to work for a criminal organization who offer him the money he needs in exchange for doing shady things for them.
Meanwhile, Goofy and Sylvia marry and have a boy and a girl, while Max enlists after 9/11 and goes to Afghanistan as a marksman (cue the Mulan theme). 8 years of war later, Max has watched his remaining friends die, lost a leg and a hand, and is just burnt out from it all, but is still hesitant to go home because he fears his stepmother will reject him just like his original mother did, but his squadmates, recognizing he's gone full section 8, convince him to retire, so he goes back home in early 2010 and finally meets the family he's always wanted...and notices Pistol has grown into a smoking hottie. :x
@btamamura It gets even darker when Max finds and rescues PJ and his daughter by sabotaging the crime organization that enslaved him- only to find themselves targeted by the man running that organization, a black Great Dane named Seth who is an old enemy of his father, Goofy, who he knows from their childhood days growing up in the Dixie Mafia, and the story becomes The Fast and The Goofiest when Max has to use his military experience to defend his family, and everyone else contributes their respective specialties, and it gets even crazier when the Ducktales and Darkwing cast (now older) get involved, and Max's old principal, Wallace Mazur, reveals himself to be a former S.H.U.S.H. agent who dealt with Seth back in the 80s when he worked for F.O.W.L.
Powerline is just combining Prince and Michael Jackson.
She’s literally a cartoon dog 😭
"Could you back up a bit, Mr.foot? you're out of focus" lol that still gets me
Powerline’s a pretty nice guy to allow Goofy and Max to dance with him out of nowhere
Though a win-win for Disney back in 1995 (because Goofy Movie and Pocahontas came out the same year), this is such an underrated, non-canon animated flick from the studio!
Tevin Campbell finally got his wish to be in a Disney film and his songs are still amazing here! There was a rumor that he had more than two songs meant for this movie, but it didn't make the final cut for time-related reasons.
Technically it is canon. The Goofy Movie was supposed to be the series finale of Goof Troop. (Extremely Goofy Movie later became the finale.)
@@supersasukemaniac Not canon to the animated films of the Disney animated features canon. It belongs in the DisneyToons section.
Wish they would have released them on a soundtrack for the movie at least if that’s the case
Fun fact: When Stacy, the student body President, is speaking to the students in the auditorium, the boy who yells “Yo Stacy! Talk to me talk to me talk to me baby!” is voiced by none other than Donte Bosco. You will know him as the voice of Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender!
I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS COMMENT
*spits out drink laughing*
Dude, he’s Rufio from Hook. That’s one of his most memorable roles. He was also in a movie later about an Asian guy trying to be black. So basically every 90s kid.
I’ve never seen Avatar the last airbender.
I think part of the reason the principal was so mad at Max was because it was the last day of school and detention/suspension wasn't on the table.
If that had happened at my school and Max still had another year there he'd have gotten nailed with detentions in the next semester.
Also getting dropped down a trap door isn't fun.
The voice actor for Goofy is Bill Farmer. He's been Goofy since 1987 and is now a Disney Legend for voicing the character. He's really good at the character and he's someone you should look up.
He's also, among other roles, the voice of Hop Pop in _Amphibia_ , Horace Horsecollar in _House of Mouse_ , and Sam in _Sam and Max Hit the Road_
Something about this movie I always appreciated was the attention to detail. PJ’s father is not only authoritative, PJ shows signs of anxiety due to how his father may react which is why he’s so passive and willing to do what his father commands. PJ is also incredibly polite to Goofy when addressing him which would be part of his upbringing which contrasts with Max being very informal, almost blasé towards his father until he really starts to appreciate his father and his way of parenting
Goofy’s more loving parental style vs the “under your thumb” style was actually something that was widely debated in the 90’s and in some ways still is.
A Goofy Movie is so good, one of my favorite films that revolves around some of the classic Disney characters! The best part in my opinion is the Powerline concert. The song, “I2I” still holds up as one of the best Disney tunes ever! Thanks for the reaction, Timothee!😁
To me A Goofy Movie is such an underrated movie compared to alot of the other animated Disney movies. Also this has 2 of my favorite songs from Disney all time. I 2 I and Stand Out are absolutely fire! Glad you liked it!
Whoever chose Jason Marsden as Max did a good job. I've been a fan of Jason ever since I watched the English dub of Spirited Away. Jason can voice funny cute and relatable characters, and he can also voice really handsome characters as well.
"he can also voice really handsome characters as well."
That's... such an odd comment.
@@Eidlones Yeah. It is an odd comment. You can say that.
9:43 WHOA! I love how you point out there's quite a few steps between detention and THE ELECTRIC CHAIR!
I love rewatching this as an adult because I have a completely different point of view now. I also still like living vicariously through Max because I would never get to do any of the stuff he did lol
Edit: I definitely would've slapped Lester the Possum
Me too.
Easy fix: just edit Max pulling out a gun and have the scene black out as soon as a shot is heard, then cut to a later scene.
Max is also voiced by the same guy who does Kovu in the second Lion King.
Don’t forget goofy out of the main six is the only one that has a child and we don’t even know who is Max’s mother is
S/o to the single fathers
Well we have the babe in the sequel that Goofy is dating so that can be his new mom.
19:47 and thus Goofy was Tim's furry awakening
Lol but honestly Roxanne sent a lot of young boys crazy in the 90s and Max and Roxanne are disney canon to this day. They pop up as background characters in a lot of things
Seriously? Nice.
You got a example?
@@Morgan-kl2pi House of Mouse is an older one they pop up in a few times as a couple on dates or she's there while he's working, they more recently appeared in ducktales in a picture together in goofy's wallet and theres a cgi christmas special with them together but roxanne was redesigned
@@ILikeCHEEZ9 Nice.
Except Roxanne redesign, because today is perfect.
Bro, I cannot tell you the amount of times my friends and I used to watch A Goofy Movie in kindergarten. This is nostalgic on a deep level!
I gotta respect that the scenes that matter in this movie go way harder than you'd think they would.
I grew up watching this all my childhood! This movie will always have a special place in my heart!!!
I think we can all agree that Max and Roxanne are the greatest Disney couple of all time!
😎
Don’t try to change my mind!
And next to them Star and Marco.
Don't tryb to change my mind top :)
This is one of the best disney movies of all time imo and it really added so much depth to Goofy's character! The story of a boy pushing his father away because he's trying to grow up and 'spread his wings', mixed with Goofy's endearing, if a bit over bearing role in trying to be there and care for his son! Ahh, really hits you right in the feels haha 😂😭
Childhood classic . such an underrated Disney movie .
Oh this is one of my favorites!!
My oldest son and I love watching this together!❤
There was also a prequel series centered on Goofy and his son called Goof Troop.
Ahhh! I'm 7 again! The crazy thing is that Roxanne liked him all along, he never HAD to do anything other than be himself. There's the lesson kids, be yourself and you'll go far.
used to watch this one so many times on vhs back in the day defenitly one of most underated and best animated movies west has ever produced in my opinion
"I thought he died"
Dude goofy is indestructible
This movie is seriously my top 5 favorite Disney movies. Seriously a classic. Lester's Possum Pals is still by far one of the most memorable scenes in Disney history to me.🤣💕
One of the best Disney classics I’ve seen as a kid replaying it on the DVR from the Disney Channel back in the day. The themes ring different as an adult looking further. I would also recommend seeing An Extremely Goofy Movie!
Damn. My dads still alive and all but this movie makes me miss the time i coulda spent with him as a kid because i was caught up in my own stuff
Watched this in the theater with my friend Ryan several blocks away from where I'm sitting. Great movie.
I do miss the 90s and “A Goofy Movie” is 100% of the 90s
14:49
Yet another respectable use of the Wilhelm Scream!
😎
Definitely my favorite movie as a kid. I still listen to the song "Stand Out" religiously.
I related so much to Max when I was younger. He still holds a special place in my heart❤️
It was nice to see a show with a single parent back in the 80s/90s. Single Dads were a rarity!
One of my childhood favorites Goofy really is the best dad because he'll do anything for Max
Hey there. PJ sounds like Carl from Jimmy Neutron because it's the same actor, Rob Paulsen. He also does Chip on JN. He does Mark on Fairly Oddparents, Yakko, Pinky, and Reuben aka 625. He also sings the mask series theme. Great actor. Powerline is voiced by Tevin Campbell. Loved your reaction on this classic.
This was always another one of my disney favorites from the 90's! I'd say this movie was teaching a lesson about father & son bonding and also about excepting when your child is growing up. Anyway the music of this movie was just AWESOME!
Fun fact, Goofy and Max are not dogs, apparently they are a specific breed of hornless cattle called the Aberdeen Angus cattle. He's also Scottish.
Hmm I see it.
This was the first movie I ever cried at, seeing it in theaters when it came out and I was 7 or 8 years old. Goofy was so sad after fighting with his son and that made me cry. I've never watched it again since and I won't be watching this today either lmao
Fun fact: the girl who cries during the photo shoot is voiced by the woman who voiced Tommy Pickles.
An absolute underrated classic; nicely relatable themes with both sides of Max and Goofy, and a great soundtrack too, it deserves a lot more credit than it got
I always loved this movie. Yes, it is indeed the perfect embodiment of the 90s. The movie did so well that they made "Goof Troop", a tv show with Max and Goofy. It was pretty good at first. I believe they also made another movie. Must have not been as good since I don't remember it really. When the movie came out I was a 14, so it kind of struck a cord as I started to be homeschooled and dealing with parents was hard at first. But came to love it.
Always appreciate your parents. You never know how long they will be around. I'm 40 now and my dad is very sick and dying of lukemie and some unknown lung issue. Mom moms not much better. Seeing these movies makes me think of the past. While my dad and I didn't fight much, the few fights we had, I was pretty nasty about what I said to him. I know he forgave me of course but I wish I never said what I did at the time.
It’s the other way around actually. The show came first and this movie is a sort of finale to it. Kinda like the 3rd lilo and stitch movie is the finale to the lilo and stitch tv show.
Glad you enjoyed this movie! If you wish to watch the prequel Goof Troop that is great as well! There’s a sequel, An Extremely Goofy Movie if you want to react to it as well.
You still need to see Disney’s The Great Mouse Detective!
😎
Like this movie, it was only a modest success when it came out, but today it rightfully has an impressively devoted fan base!
Powerline was supposed to be Bobby Brown so the character design was based off of Bobby brown however Bobby Brown was dealing with his legal troubles so they actually change the artist that was voicing powerline which is Tevin Campbell
19:18 - Bigfoot dancing to "Stayin' Alive" has always made me laugh.
Whelp, its 3am and this is *A FREAKING MUST SEE MOVIE!*
guess I'll be going to bed around 4am hahahahaha
This Was Literally One Of My Favorite Movies As A Kid!
Please watch "Harry and the Hendersons" (1987). Oscar for Best Makeup!
Best Bigfoot movie ever. Kevin Peter Hall also played as the Predator
I don't know if anyone mentioned it yet, but Bobby is voiced by Pauly Shore, a comedian and MTV VJ who America mistakenly let have a film career. This is probably his best role, probably because he's only in it for a couple scenes and doesn't overstay his welcome.
I was born in the same year this movie came out, and even now as an adult I still love watching A Goofy Movie!!! It's very nostalgic because of the many 90s inspired tropes it had, but the themes it presents still hold up today, and I could definitely relax to Max on so many things on so many levels. I love the storyline and character arcs between Max and Goofy as they go through the trip trying to understand each other, plus Roxanne was definitely my first childhood crush (Yes, I said it!!!!)🥰🥰🥰 You just made my day watching this movie, Tim!
Hi Tim! 👋 I loved your reaction to this movie. Especially at the Bigfoot part. I laughed from 18:10-19:40. Great reaction, can't wait for An Extremely Goofy Movie reaction.
Next week!

That face when the piano fell!! 😂
Nobody else but you (the song that Goofy and max sing) always gives me the chills. It's such a beautiful song
I remember having a crush on Roxanne as a child because she reminded me of Topanga from Boy Meets World.
I bought this movie on VHS for my little brother for his birthday, he loved it! Definitely looking forward to your reaction to an Extremely Goofy Movie.
When I was a kid (very little kid) I thought that you could end on the electric chair if you were a bad student...
Keep him under your thumb goof. 😂😂😂. My brother still quotes this when dealing with the kid's 🤣🤦
14:50 we lost another Wilhelm…
Why do I feel like Timothee would be the ultimate wingman? 👌
One of my favorites!!! It's the perfect Father's Day movie too.
Oh and yeah, the old Disney opening is the best and I'm glad it's been implemented in atleast 1 Creator's intro.
Aw the memories. The stories I and every other early 90s baby can tell people about this movie. If I did that I would have to write a book 😂. I would rewind the tape like crazy just to watch max and goofy sing Nobody else but you and dance with powerline. Now everytime I watch it I wonder if goofys niece and max cousin saw them dance with powerline. Or if the backup dancers gave max a 😘.
Yeah I agree why didn't Max just tell his dad "Hey Dad I promised the girl that I love that I will be going to the concert can we quickly stop at LA before the fishing trip," then again they are the Goof family so meh hey we got a great film out of the Goof logic so don't look a gift horse in the mouth lol.
Goofy is one of my most favorite Disney character of all time, sometime he's very an icon character then Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck in my opinion. I'm happy you enjoyed this underrated Disney movie!l and this is my favorite movie too.
Powerine is voiced by Tevin Campbell who's song "Can We Talk" is an R&B classic.
this is one of my childhood favourites and i quote it all the time XD
Everyone wanted to go to a powerline concert, his songs are still bangers!
they got away from Big Foot because he found a Walkman and was listening to it.
In case you don't know, today is Tuesday, 2-22-22!
It's more like it's "Twosday"
I2I will forever be iconic
Definitely one of my favorite Disney movies!
Rocksan was peoples first crush an awakening
This movie hits differently whether you are a kid or the adult and it is both amazing. Also first time rolling with the Goof? Because Goofy is pretty much chaos in dog-human form and now imagine that as your father.
One of my favorite movies from my childhood, #2 is amazing as well! Can’t wait to see what you think about it. 🥰
After losing my father to cancer, and having my first child a month later after that, I can't watch Goofy Movie without crying like a little baby.
This was my movie as a kid. I’m glad you watched it
Max dad embarrassing his son every time I feel sorry max
This was one of my favorite childhood animations and the classic intro looks good
I love this movie. I still have the Gold Collection DVD copy of the movie.
I enjoyed gym in high school. Me and a majority of my homies were in the same class so we would always team up and f*ck around with the other students.
You should check out the series this was based off of called goof troop. Surprisingly Pete stole the spotlight in that show
I love this movie. Goofy and Max needed to communicate better
Fun fact: Rob Paulsen also did the voice of Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid
Goofy... Annoying? I never thought about it like that cause he is my favorite character
To me, this is a movie that really...Stands Out above the crowd!
But I seriously love this movie. From a story standpoint it´s probably the story most people can relate to the most out of virtually all other Disney movies from the 90s, since they´re pretty much all about royalties falling in love with commoners while this is the rare and beautiful story of a father and a son trying to find common ground. A Goofy Movie belongs on my top 3 Disney-movies of all time together with The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.
Also, the fact that many of the actors in the movie as well as several crew members, including Director Kevin Lima (Who also directed Tarzan and Enchanted) has met so many fans that has claimed that they didn´t really talk to their fathers before watching this movie should say something about how much of an impact this relatively low-budget movie has really had on people.
This and its sequel, An Extremely Goofy Movie, are continuations of the animated series Goof Troop
The kid who cries gimmie gimmie is the E.G Daily who voices Tommy from the rugrats
PJ’s dad Pete was the original villain of Mickey Mouse and actually debuted before Mickey did. They also make a show based off this movie called Goof Troop and Pete has a crazy family with his wife who is in charge and wins her arguments with Pete, a daughter who is an energetic all over the place kid, and PJ who is stressed to the max because Pete is very overbearing on him demanding educational excellence.
this is a nice trilogy to get into.
yea love the era when you honestly didnt know what to expect from the shows, awesome cuteness then dash of heart stopping.
If you enjoyed this movie then I think you'll like an extremely Goofy movie
19:12 I had to say goofy is a 70s guy. 20:43 😆 21:00 how do they get out of the Bigfoot? 21:41 😬 24:36 the real 🚘 can’t float in real life. 25:18 chip and dale. 28:05 you’re on 📺 29:34 😘 29:46 🚗 explosion 💥 29:55 can’t wait to see you watch the sequel to an extremely goofy movie.
