- Around Christmas time, I said my Rover 75 1.8 Turbo was going to go off to reluctantly be sold, but then it disappeared. Heres why.

If I was you, I’d sell a couple of other vehicles and keep the 75 ( you clearly love and want the car)
Agree !
If it's one of the more reliable and well specified definitely keep it. Sadly the nature of a CZcams channel- reliable means no content and no channel revenue 😢
HE SHOULD CONCENTRATE ON MAKING BETTER VIDS LASTR FEW INC THAT RUSYTIVAL HAVE BEEN UTTER GARBAGE AND THIS ONE TONIGHT ,,,UNSUBSCRIBED NOW AS BAD AS THAT HUBNUT bLEEP
If I recall, you tried but couldn't sell it privately, obviously because of the price, so Wayne offered to help, and would ultimately be asking more than you after some cosmetics. They really aren't worth as much as you think, or they should be worth. Get it fixed as you say then sell it privately for a realistic price, and dispense with the middle man and his cut and you will be no worse off.
I should imagine quite a few of furiousdriving's subscribers would like him to keep the car too!😀
Sounds like a job for John Coupland’s dad. He’ll have it fixed it in no time!! His 75 had the same issue. Passed the compression test and gas test. Wasn’t blowing any heat too
Another vote for the legend that is Jon Coupland's Dad ... But I might be a bit biased 😂
Your dad needs to come out of retirement old rovers need a good mechanic 👏👏👏👏@@JonCoupland
@@darrenmeears3912 he's got enough on his plate keeping my fleet going 😂
@@JonCoupland That's a very selfish attitude LOL 🤣😂😅
I keep thinking I should sell my 75 because it costs a fortune to run. I'll subsequently go for a drive in it and change my mind. Happens every time without fail
This is an ongoing issue too
That happens with all my cars. There's something wrong with us😁.
If you haven't already, change the coolant cap on the expansion tank with a fresh ex MG ROVER part. I did it for me on my 25, and it worked a treat! Might have got lucky, but the valve in the cap goes after a while. Give it a try! 😊👍
Came here to say this. Did the exact same on my 1.8 turbo ZTT and coolant loss was solved. Relatively cheap to check as well
Rustival was a superb event, thankyou so much to you, Steph, Carly and Ian for putting all the work in to make it happen.
It must have been satisfying to stand on that stage and see all the cars and people - real validation of the decisions of each of you to start a CZcams channel - a proper community.
I know a couple of blokes in Lincolnshire who have had a similar problem recently 😅
Matt I could hear your voice and heart breaking at the thought of selling/losing this one! I'd say maybe time to say goodbye to some of the other fleet members? Maybe a poorly Hippo could make way for the 75! You don't get real wood with a Freelander!
I would have to sit myself down and have a serious talk with myself if I was you, the frankly gorgeous 75 v the 420....... it's not an easy one. Anyway hopefully when what's her name.... I'll call her "Serena" the Seventy Five is all good whoever adopts her will cherish her and keep her on the road. Thanks for sharing.
Seems to be exactly the same failure mode as Mr. Coupland's. Head gasket rots out on the exterior side, depositing all the coolant on the road (via the undertray). I wonder if it ran for some time without corrosion inhibitor. Without it, a multi-layer steel (MLS) gasket will generate a voltaic cell and erode at the aluminium/steel interface. Come to think of it, if the exterior has moisture on it, that could form a voltaic cell too.
You know what that means. Keep it ;) it’s a sign as we discussed yesterday 😂
the longer it takes to fix the more likely something will happen to save it!
Matt, you clearly love this car, therefore will definitely regret selling it. Maybe draw up a top 15 of your cars and see where the 75 sits. Then look below that number and see what could go instead? Volvo? Sleaze? Hippo?
I wonder if Stone Cold would pay for that and take the £500 out of the profit for the car?
I'd sell the Volvo and keep the 75 personally.
Also did you see the R8 216 Cabriolet (it was red, had a private plate R200 RVR) that had been converted to a 1.8VVC engine and brakes, for sale at Rustival? My best mate bought it, it's a lovely car.
Would be a good car for you to feature. Apparent it was converted by a guy who used the business name RoverRevival, have you ever heard of it?
I'D cut my losses and I Scrapped mine BL52 LVH for £100 same as you mentioned it HG done before, I sadly knew there wasn't something right and owned my car around 6 weeks. faith I lost,£460 was what I originally paid.
Yours looks real nice, its a flip car get as much cash as you can.
I've basically took 4 Rover/MGF cars and 3 Vectra cars for scrap, I Loved my Vectra estate 1.9 CDTI but with 219.998 miles. Considering doing same with my Audi A6 2.7TDI Estate its a courier car full of luxury but I could easily spend £2000 and its only really worth £2600.
But I notice a wheel bearing is going a front tyre and some suspension bits require attention.
As a work asset I paid £760 had 4 years with car spent around £800 and got £40 towards a new estate which cost me £1650. And owned about 3 years in June. and roughly cost me £670 tyres wiper blades and service and driven 17.000 miles.
Cannot put a guide value from cash earned because my average pence per miles is something crazy like £0.20p when it should average £0.85p.
Tricky to actually work out pleasure miles from work miles 8500 I guess.
I think you should keep the 75 and perhaps sell something else ! I’d love a 75 myself but I’m also after a moggy minor and I only have enough space for one , great video as always!👍
Check the turbo cooling hose. I had a dark blue 1.8T, one of the best cars I ever had. But the small turbo cooling hose sprung a leak and it pumped all of it's coolant out.
There's no getting away from it Matt. You need to keep this car. It's a beauty.
Yeah defo head gasket if it’s leaking down the block. It’s not mixing oil and water coz it’s just the water jacket seals leaking not the oil ones.
worth changing the radiator cap as the seal hardens and fails. causing fluid lost. it worth doing for a few pennies before a gas test
I had a 400 diesel years ago, exactly the same symptoms, had the head gasket done as one would, didn't cure it. Turned out it was the oil cooler which causes identical symptoms to a HG failure. Fun things Rovers.
As others have already said, this is a repeat of the HGF on Jon Coupland's 75. It probably has the MLS gasket like his did. The only way to find out will be once the head has been removed. This car is a bit of a Catch 22 situation. You need the proceeds from the sale but you still need to throw money at it to get top dollar.
Drop it off to us in Lincolnshire 😛
you can see the MLS gasket protruding from the block, no need to remove the head :)
The Wedgwood Blue on your 75 1.8T is similar to the Arctic Blue VW Passat 4motion I used to own.
I would definitely be getting rid of some of your other cars to be able to keep that one, that is one of your nicer motors!
Keep the 75 she is a beautiful car and in one of the best colours the 75's worn.
It is really obvious to me not only do you want the Rover 75 but the Rover 75 wants to keep you. Keep it and love it which you obviously do. Sell something else.
Another potential coolant loss location on the K is the thermostat housing down the back of the engine. If it has the plastic housing type they're really prone to cracking and dumping all the coolant out unseen. The metal versions are getting harder to find now, unfortunately, but do solve the issue.
It’ll be fine, just chuck some engine sealant in it, that will seal any coolant leak 😂👍🏻. In all seriousness though, I did that on my 1.4 R25 daily runner back in 2019, which has been running perfectly ever since and zero coolant loss.
You clearly love the car and I can see why.
I say keep it, we all love it. 😊
Exactly!
I don’t think the issue is the head gasket since the coolant and oil aren’t mixing. It’ll be either a blown hose or the heater core has let go if there’s coolant in the footwell.
Keep it and sell hippo
Matt that car was running lovely, iv a feeling for it to get like that someone must of been giving it a bit of a thrashing? You just Google what happens to 75 Turbo's that have been thrashed to much, pop goes the headgasket!!!
Think its time to carry out a small cull. Im a huge fan of your channel, but I got in a similar situation a few years back with too many cars. I fully understand you need the cars & content for your channel, but maybe not so many. As you know, you've got cars in 3 different locations, bursting out of the small unit, full up at home (neighbours must be quite understanding) & SCC. Running and repairing the fleet must out strip the youtube earnings by now. Time to trim the fleet I think, but I'd keep the 75 and shift at least 2 cars.
Best to double check the hoses from the turbo, Matt and the plastic junction just behind the top middle of the radiator. I've just had those both replaced. The turbo outlet hose was leaking and the junction is a prone spot for going so I've replaced that with the alloy one from DMGRS
This doesnt have that pipe, I bought the alloy one but didnt need it, so returned it
@@furiousdriving how curious! I hope you get it sorted Matt. Mines throwing all sorts up like that at the moment 😂
I never "get" the 75. I really don't like them. However I hope it gets fixed.
Could be the plastic inlet manifold or thermostat housing leaking ? Always do a coolant pressure test when cold !
What's happening with the Rover 420 Tourer? Been away a very long time 🤔
Keep the R40! Looking at getting a 2.0 V6 ((R41) Tourer if I can find one) manual after I pass my test. Maybe sell the 740 and Freelander?
And know the feeling as my head gasket on my very low mileage 206 has failed, its a TU3 engine and the all go in the same place (sperate oil way into coolant) fortunately its under AA warranty ( I would do it myself if it wasn't under warranty). I really do hope its just a popped hose/radiator core and not a head gasket.
Really nice 75, if I was you I would keep it, they are really nice cars and that interior is just a lovely place to be, as for a name for the car how about Preston as it's on Preston plates
Maybe ask Pete Coupland to help you out 😂
haha I dont think he does house calls
@@furiousdriving sardines on toast and a cup of tea and he might 😂
I was wondering what was going on with the Rover, I thought you were getting cold feet about selling it hence why it wasn't for sale.
Wish you could keep it Matt it's one of my favourites on the fleet love a 75!
i know the feeling, i currently have £3000 tied up in trying to sell a very healthy 08 nissan note auto with 21k miles.... i don't really want to sell it but have nowhere to keep it, estate car needed and bought for its replacement that is not even close in condition
5:41 If you wanna test drive my 75 tourer let me know. 😉
Sell the 400 tourer. Too much work needed. Put that back into the 75
It’s a lovely 75. I’d sell the 420 and the Volvo and keep it.
Look at getting a late 2000s Toyota Avensis estate… the nearest thing to a 75…. my friend had a posh spec 1.8 petrol which was lovely until some dodgy car wash solvents caused bad laquer peel !
Hi matt, love your videos, im a huge fan, never miss a video, this is a very nice example of a 75 i admit, but as lovely as it is, this was a matter of time really😢
Gutting , hopefully its a cracked radiator core blasting it onto the block in the wind. Get the coolant system pressure tested first before going head gasket route.
It's an appreciating classic..... Are you REALLY sure you want to sell it?
Head gasket has “delaminated”! Watch Jon Coupland Cars his one had the same issue
Dad has been dispatched 😂
@@JonCoupland I was gonna suggest “dad” could help but I think he’d rather ride his bike or go fishing now! Another pale blue R75 would push him over the edge 🤣🤣
@@philipbunker146 absolutely 😂
What a pity that happened Matt it will be fine when repaired it is a epic example of a 75 best regards Andy Allen.
How many signs do you need? The Rover wants to stay and will do anything to make you understand that 😛....
Yeah I think your right, Its like a modern day Herbie. Ie Car that wants to be loved
I appreciate that content is required, but this is the last car i would be inclined to get rid of. There is a big following for 75/zt cars.
I would thin out some of the cars that are less enjoyable to drive or need serious work.
The 75 makes an interesting and very comfortable, modern enough alternative to the daily driver for a sunny day.
For example, the mercedes will need £1000s to be restored and still not be particularly nice to drive as they are so slow for modern roads.
Just an opinion that nobody wanted, and at the end of the day, it boils down to what pulls at the heartstrings most.
Check between the top off gearbox and engine where the coil pack wire plug is I had one weeping out not inside engine headgasket was gone all the best donny
oh dear - same as Jon Couplands low mileage 75
Have the same engine in my zr same symptoms and that had been done before I bought it good luck
I don't like the 75 but its your car not mine. Do what makes you happiest, that's what matters.
Sell the thing, and be done, maybe try some Japanese motors...? old and dependable!
do the right thing and keep it
I didn't fully understand. What is the £500 for? We don't know what's wrong with it yet do we?
why wouldn't you use it every day, I do with mine (diesel) if you google how many cars in the uk with over 750,000 miles on the clock the rover 75 is third with 33 examples so don't be scared of using them.
because I need an estate for work and dogs, my diesel gets about double the MPG, it gets used in mud and salt, and 75s are well known for rotting in the sills - basically I dont want to ruin it!
I'm sure i heard James Coleman say at Rustival thst he was really bored and very much fancied taking apart a Rover 75 engine
Matt just sell it to some unsuspecting person who knows nothing about cars 🤔 Ian Hubnut comes to mind 😂😂, won’t be the first time or the last he has bought a dud.
A certain Camry springs to mind.
Sell the Volvo and keep the 75 a much better car
How much is this going up for once fixed? Looking for another 75 at the moment.
How can anyone defend these K series engines? They're junk
Hi Matt. Is it very uncommon to have a k series engine that hasn’t had a new head gasket? I’ve got a 30,000 mile rover 114 that has never had a head gasket and it’s one of the sweetest running engine I’ve ever heard. Its last owner looked after it meticulously to the point of over servicing it. So hopefully I won’t have any problems
If its an early K series its less likely to have issues, they skimped on a few parts later that caused the issues
@@furiousdriving hi it’s a 97 on an r plate. One of the last before they stopped selling them
Subbed you for years on here. Just my 1p...keep it!
How i miss my 75, would i have another one, I would! But my wallet and wife would say no! 😂😂
I also thought the Morris Minors were well represented at Rustival as was the Volvos....
yes, lots of both of those, and plenty of Alfas
What's the saying? " Needs must when the Bad Man Drives" Quite a predicament But, if I had kept every car I liked, I would face bankruptcy from the overhead. The Moving finger writes, and having writ, moves on." Omar Khayyam
I looked it up on the stone cold website a couple of weeks ago and was wondering about it.
Hey that's the best type of HG failure to have!
Personally, Volvo or Freelander would go first. And probably the Ford
That’s a real shame Matt. Is that MG Rover guy Michael Stafford based in Worthing, perhaps? Top man.
Im not sure where hes based, I thought it was furthe north?
@@furiousdriving if it is Michael Stafford from
MJS Auto & Marine, then it’s based in Goring (near Worthing)
Hi Matt, do you have any recent history of the inlet manifold gasket being changed? These are known to leak on the 75 and have resulted in some incorrect HG diagnoses as they can leak internally, causing steam out the exhaust, or externally resulting in coolant running down the block, even making its way down the front of the block!
no, it had a new head in 2019 but no receipt for any of the parts - probably not been changed
I thought Stone Cold were at Wrotham. Have they moved? Hmm just checked and they are now at Banbury. Possible heater matrix leak on the 75?
They used to be at Wrotham which was handy, having bought a couple of cars from them. Now they are apparently four hours away.....
Very sad to see you are selling the 75. Seriously though stop complaining about taxing your cars. Isn’t it easier to pay for 6-12 months upfront. I personally couldn’t be bothered paying monthly road tax bills. I would just pay 12 months and forget about it. Get all the big bills out of the way really early.
Are you not getting the omen? 75's at rustival. Breaking down conveniently, you happening to still have it? Come on man, there is romance and I would keep that over some of your other cars.
No idea if you seen my 75 at rustival Matt but I really need to get the laquer peel sorted out.
I saw a few! What colour is yours?
@@furiousdriving Wedgewood blue too. I was amazed how many there were.
Mine was the one in the worst condition.
Would have liked to see it at Rustivle maybe it will turn up somewhere sometime.
After repair you probably won’t get your money back. Like to think it would be a selling point that the work had been done. Just gotta bite the bullet and get it done I guess.
You have the best luck..!
sounds like you have done a radiator
Hope it can be fixed cheaply. I like old RWD Volvo's and Toyota.
Sell the Freelander and the Punto and keep the 75!!!
A name for the 75 Sir Wedgwood
Same colour, same engine, pretty much the same car, and same symptoms John Coupland had.
Must be a dealer option 😂
just with a turbo to make it more fun to fix
Midnight pajamas?
As a name, not a method of funding the coolent fix ...
Or Tom, as in Tom's midnight pajamas ... or was it garden?
Just get it fixed
pls make a video on that black ibiza cupra :) tnks .
What a hopeless car. No wonder they went bust
Its 20+ years old, under what conclusions do you base such a senseless remark?! It's most likely the head gasket fault but unsure at this stage, rest of the car is superb in condition.
Good choice imo.
Got any cows in that barn !!!!🐄🐄🐄🐄👍👍
Fix it and try again to sell it privately but at a realistic price.
Jon Couplands Dad could fix that for u, but I think he’d rather emigrate!
😂
Keep the car man, don’t sell it…
The K series was an appalling design TBH, why they went for wet liners is simply unfathomable.
Mad though that the engine is still being produced but with the necessary modifications that it desperately needed to improve it. Most modern MG models from China use this modified K series engine.
you do get some issues ah not everything is straight forward
Maybe swap the engines and put this in the 420!
An interesting swap!
