The clever thing to do would have been giving Spencer's character, a meek scientist, superstrength while giving the brash McCarthy character the invisibility. Then Spencer's character would have to build confidence while McCarthy's character would have to learn not to stay in the spotlight. BUT THAT WOULD TAKE EFFORT.

@@chasejackson7248 To give Chris Farley credit, his routines at least had quick timing and managed to find a better balance between his antics and how other people responded to them, making the comedy more about the situation rather than just "hurr hurr fat man fall down." I find a lot of jokes in Melissa McCarthy movies tend to hold on a bit for ages to highlight how awkward it is, with most of the focus being on her rather than the whole picture; not only does this drag the pacing down to a grinding halt, but it really does show that they want us to just laugh at her as a character, which is a chore when the character isn't funny. I doubt that's entirely down to her and is probably more down to direction, writing and editing, but it's a real trend I've noticed in her worst films.

@@jamaledwards8118 @Jamal Edwards Lol nah, it's definitely the material she's working with and her pacing (which, as I stated, isn't always her fault).
Melissa is great in films like The Heat and Bridesmaids, for example, where she's part of a group or it cuts to reactions of people responding to her outlandish behaviour. The comedic timing and who she's bouncing off of helps so much.
Then you get Ghostbusters and Happytime Murders, where it feels like she was just told "be funny" and then everybody took a break while she rambled, then nobody edited the scenes or gave her any direction. It's like night and day.
Pretty sure Chris would have been just as unbearable if he was directed in a similar way, it was just that they knew how to use him (especially in short bits, I'm not going to pretend he didn't have bad films either).

Yeah but she’s doing this movie with her husband. He directed it. So she keeps choosing these projects. I think she has enough money that she could take a break from this crap and hold out for a good script. Adam Sandler does his Happy Madison films but then occasionally does a serious film like Uncut Gems.

@@bayonetababe9697 Great point. Fully agreed on taking a break to wait to either piece together, or have it given to her, a great script.

As much as I love her, she is choosing /doing this to herself. Most of these press, play and repeat movies she does with her husband who directs them. Hwr best movies and performances are movies that he is not involved in, I.E Spy, Can you forgive me... She's gonna do whatever movie her husband writes and directs. So unless she culls that working part of there relationship she will continue to get dragged for these types of movies

I lasted until both got their uniforms and then I left. I appreciated Melissa Leo's snarky remarks as the head of security. Taylor Mosby as Tracy, Emily Stanton (Octavia Spencer's daughter), was engaging and likable. This movie just dragged so much that I even bailed before seeing Jason Bateman's scenes which probably were funny.

The little "blurb" for this movie is front and center on Canadian Netflix. They picked the scene where "Kiss From a Rose" was playing and Melissa was off-key. That right there earned a "nope" in my book.
