One of the best how-to videos i have ever seen. Clear, concise, nothing left out, nothing overstated. Well done! This will save me at least $20 this week!
The cross sectional drawing made this better than any other tutorial ive seen. Nice work man
Great video! I just bought a bike and will be doing the assembly myself for the first time. Your tutorials have given me every confidence that everything will be just fine. Thanks!
Excellent coverage of how to tighten the locknut, and how tight the cone should be against the ball bearings. That was what I came here for, and I got all the info I needed. Thank you.
Thank you for this fantastic explanation and diagram of the hub. It really helped me understand what each part is and what how it functions. The description of how to actually do it was superb as well. Thank you very much for your detailed explanation of the process as well. You are awesome!
great tutorial i was changing my axle to a quick release and found your info on the whole tight but not to tight on to allow the wheel to spin really helped me thought i broke my bike lol, thanks bro real good teacher
What a fantastic video.. Well done man! Best explanation seen so far. Thanks for your efforts!! Cheers
You have the best bike videos on youtube. I love how you use really simple bikes and explain so well the mechanics, while there is a lot of video out there with top equipments that can't explain simple stuff like this. Keep up the great job
This is a great video. The detailed description of the hub is very well done.
Absolutely excellent tutorial. I fixed my bike thanks to your video and will use what I learned for the rest of my life. Thanks a lot.
Thank you for drawing a diagram! That makes everything so much clearer!
This tutorial was very informative and detailed. More tutorials need to be done like yours. Thank you and I look forward to watching the rest of your tutorials.
I love that your ride this POS bike, but keep it so well tuned. I have what i call my trash bike (i found it in the trash), and i love working on it, keeping it in pristine condition, and yet no one would ever steal it. :) Great videos, thanks a lot!
akzorz I've got a POS bike as well, I've grown too attached to it, taken it everywhere, it has grown on me like a lovable tumour
Thank you for this instructive video. It's very clear and takes the stress out of dismantling and checking/servicing the hub. I am rejuvenating a bike I haven't ridden for 5 years. Pumped up the tyres and one burst. Replaced it and the next split! And so it goes.
Today (with your video help) I switched out a front axle for cost of parts, grease and two new ballbearings (8,70€). THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Jessica R Brown hi
Thanks much. Watched this 5 or 6 times as I completed the relubing! *Very* helpful for me.
Great video - I need to service my rear hub, but i'm a bit of a bike noob and didn't really understand what goes on in there.. now I do so thanks! The diagram was just what I needed. Great work CJ
Thank you for the awesome video buddy! It definitely taught me what I need to do a solid job on this. Keep it up!
What a fantastic video! Now I finally understand what the internals of a hub look like, which helps me understand what I need to do to service it. Thanks.
Nice tutorial. I like your inclusion of the helpful diagram in the beginning. Good teacher!
Excellent video! Great closeups. Very helpful. Thanks! :)
You are a good teacher.... very well explained....thank you!!
Enjoyed your video. Well done. It was easy to watch and not too long. Keep your explanations the same (not too technical) as I for one find some videos overboard technically.
Thanks a million, great video and you explain things so well. I now know so much more about bikes than I did 20 mins ago and I have been riding for 30 years!
Taken all the fear of this task away - my Brompton bike riding buddy set me this challenge when we were out on the 'big bikes' and he discerned the need to inspect the bearings. My vintage Peugeot has sat in the dining room waiting for the moment when I could pluck up enough courage to start the task. Thanks CJH. BSA
Something I've found to be helpful, is that after I've greased the bearings and put everything back together I'll tighten the cone to the locknut just snug so that I can nudge the cone to loosen or nudge the locknut to tighten till I get the tension perfect then tighten cone to locknut to set the adjustment. This has worked pretty good.
Big THANK YOU! Very useful. The diagram is wonderful. I was smiling at explanations what a "cross-section" is, because I've got used to technical drawings, but I realize that many people can't read diagrams easily.
Excellent tutorial - just the right amount of detail to make it crystal clear.
This is a really excellent tutorial. You are a natural teacher! Thanks!
Very clear thank you. I like the fact that you showed the diagram as well as the practical. That helped me understand what it was that I was doing and therefore made the job easier.
Now I finally understand how those hubs work. Thank you for such a great video!
I watched a lot of you tube vidios on hub repair, and yours was the most informative!
This video helped me Soo much and my bike is now running 100% thank you :)
Excellent video! You covered all the details so well! If you aren't a teacher by trade, you'd be a great one! Lots of patience, and seeing things from the other guy's point of view!
Thanks much!
Great video. Makes next week's task a lot easier. Thanks.
i've been looking all over youtube for videos like this, thank you so much for uploading these educational videos
Excellent, professional and thorough. Great video
excellent demonstration thank you very much for taking time and effort to help some one in need,i did all steps and fixed my bike .keep posting good stuff
Thank you for making this video. This was the only video I could find that shows how to take apart bolt on wheel hubs.
Thanks for this very educational video. Very good drawing.
Thanks for the video. Thus has been really informative. I am going to try this with my rear shaky wheels
Thanks for the explanations. Enjoyed the video a lot!
Best explanation for repairing/replacing wheel bearings on CZcams!
I SO appreciate what a careful and caring teacher you are in your videos! Thanks for such a comprehensive, yet easy to understand, explanation of wheel bearings. VERY helpful, and I will quickly be putting this new knowledge to use. …and you’ve EARNED a new Subscriber, my Friend!
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words!
That was very helpful - thank you. Just enough detail without going too far. Top man - thanks for taking the time.
Thanks a lot man this helped me to figure out what my problem with my bike was, it sounds horrible so probably is kinda rusty inside i hope that i won´t be needing to replace the whole thing thanks again! God bless you!
This is a great video! Thanks for the clear, detailed instructions!
Excellent video, going beyond the call of duty with the diagram. I wish more tutorial videos on YT were like this.
thumbs up!
that was a good explanation of how the bearings work. I find it alot easier to adjust the bearings by using two cone and adjustable spanners at the same time, if there's too much play you carefully turn both lock nuts clockwise simultaneously and if its binding you carefully turn both cones anticlockwise simultaneously, so long as both sides start out moderately tight repeating the adjustment two or three times torques it up sufficiently enough. I've not come across anybody else that does it this way but if you haven't already tried it I've always found it to be less frustrating and more precise.
Thank you for such thorough explanation. The cross-section diagram really helped as well.
Awesome Chris, great vid. Just fixed my hub on mountain bike. Came out great. Perfect tips and great explanation. Very much appreciate your taking the time. Craig
My bicycle need to repair now. And that's video really help me. Thanks for shearing.
helpful video! i have a newer Schwinn bike and the front tire only spins a couple times before stopping.. definitely going to loosen the cones up and get it to spin better.. feels like i'm dragging a wagon full of bricks when i ride it.
This guy is cool I like how he goes into in depth and he how he can see it in his mind like the back of his hand when he was drawing it out on the board.... those wheels are definately from early as the 1990s
now upper end roadbike have essentially the same kind of bearings as you would see on skateboards but in different sizes... sweet vid man I know I'm like 8 yrs late
You're right about the vintage of those wheels, but low to mid end bikes actually still use this style of bearings!
Thanks very much, this helped me understand how the wheel works and how to fix it. Great presentation and attention to detail! I appreciate it.
Thanks..very nice explanation on cycle bearing operation and how cycle wheel rotates on bearings smoothly. you are very good at explaining things.
Finally got around to doing it. I tightened it up, worked like a charm. Thanks!!
Hey cj. Really appreciate your videos man! Very informative and helpful.
So thats why my bearings kept getting loose and ripping in half! Thanks for the excellent video!
I discovered it was a dust cap with an smaller inner diameter: like a doughnut cut in half sideways. Thanks for getting back to me.
At home I use White Lithium Grease (which you can get at an automotive type store). In this video I'm using the kind that they have at the bike shop (which is a specific bike type that you can probably get from your local bike shop). In experience, It really doesn't matter which type you use as long as you aren't mixing two different types of grease together (which you won't be doing if you wipe everything clean before adding the new grease).
Best video tutorial on how to clean out the front wheel ball bearings. Great explanation and to the point. Wish you could have cover the rear bearings and explain how everything works, but hopefully on your next video. Thank you for taking the time to post this video. Learned a lot today.
If you watch my video titled: "How to Change a Freewheel/Cassette on a Bicycle" you'll learn how to remove the Freewheel, which will show you the part you are missing in this video. Thanks for watching.
Nicely done! Today I took a hub apart and to my surprise.....bearings all over! (I'm a noob) Then the moment of "what did I do??" After your vid, I'm confident I can get it back together and running freely again, which was my intent to begin with. Thanks for you concise and clear instruction!
Man, thank you for ur video, it's really helpful, please keep it on.
Thanks for sharing this. It is very easy to understand. Well done!!!
Good instruction video.
I had done this while ago not knowing what I was doing. If I had watched this before, it could have saved me a lot of time.
Big thanks, very VERY informative and instructional. Exactly what i was looking for to tweak my bearings. Thanks so much.
Are you using the locknut to lock the cone in place as has been shown in this video?
you are such a great teacher bro your videos are the best about bicycles on youtube :D i learn a lot everytime
Lifesaver. The diagram was a huge help. Thanks for helping out this budding bike mechanic!
Great tutorial, just successfully cleaned and re-greased the bearings in my hub. Thanks for the video.
Excellent video. Your explanations are clear and I learned a lot! Thanks.
You made this messy process perfectly clear. I applied it right away. Thank you !
I'm glad to hear!
Very informative. The whiteboard diagram was a nice touch.
Yes it could be, or the grease is contaminated from some sand or dirt. It also could be caused from the bearing surfaces or the ball bearings being worn.
WOW, with this great video, I might be able to do the job myself. Very helpful!
THANKS
Yes, cones often have a thin me ring which pressed over them which keeps debris from getting in the grease where the bearings are. The cones in this video have them too. They usually get in the way on a rear wheel if you try to remove the axle without first removing the cassette (the cluster of sprockets on the wheel). Bearing sizes can vary.
This guy is awesome. Very informative, great vid man.
great tutorial, appreciate it.
THE BEST EXPLAINING VIDEO ON CZcams ON THIS TOPIC!!! thx this vid helped me a lot!
Oh wow, that's a rare treasure that you have found! I have never worked on one of those bikes before, and have only ever seen 1 of them in my life! That is definitely a refurshment project that I am jealous of. Unfortunately I don't have any information to give you. It is called a "Front-Freewheel System (FFS ®)", maybe you can find some information online about them. Please let me know how it goes!
Great tutorial! Thank you!!
Thanks for being very informative, which you take step by step of what tools are used.
I really don't have an estimate of how often it needs to be done, it really depends on a lot of factors. For example, the bearings will need new grease sooner if they are exposed to a dusty environment, or road salt. Also certain bearing sets might be better protected than others. I just follow the steps in this tutorial any time that I can feel that the wheel isn't rolling smoothly or I hear noises. I also redo everything any time that I can feel the cones have become loose. Hope this helps!
Thanks for this video. It helped me with the back wheel on my son's bike. The back wheel on the Schwinn bike was a little more complicated but I figured it out.
Great! very clear and helpful! Thanks for sharing.
thanks for the explaining step by step on how its done, just like a haynes Manuel shows, been season after season wondered why the front wheel always clicked every time i roll down the road, took it all apart and grease was dryed out of bearings, least all 10 balls/each side was still intaked
Dude. Your the Man. I was lost on what to do. . my first mechanic job. You were so helpful. Two thumbs up for you
