Excellent, explained in easy step by step, I like the fact he talks like we aren't all park tool/gcn bike mechanics with fully equipped workshops!
The most clear and simple how to video on this task. I came across it by accident, took me a long time to re-locate it, now bookmarked and no need to seek out any other tutorials. Thank you
So glad i found you. Keep coming back to your videos and they are simple and strait forward
Really good stuff. First video out of a few that showed each part especially the cones. It helps you understand what each part does and how it interacts with the other parts.
Great step by step video for all entry levels to service accordingly. Thankyou
This is the only video that explained to me everything I need to know in a very clear and simple way. Thank you very much.
Thanks for your video, i got to the cone stage and wasn't sure how much to tighten them against the bearings, this is when i found your video. Very helpful. Cheers.
This is straight up all informational video from start till the end. Thanks for sharing. This is what I’ve been looking for!!
A straight forward guide for sorting out hubs, thanks very much.
Great tutorial, and the most awesome thing is that you show the way to do it without special tools, even thought you have it, it's really helpful! thank you!
All you need is cone wrenches and a big Allen key, good grease and new balls every time. They're simple very affordable tools.
Shimano hubs are probably the best value going IF you don't ignore them. Ive got Shimanos that are decades old.
The key is to adjust the axles properly when they're brand new. They're always tight out of the box. Run this way they'll wear faster and maybe damage the races. Every time you take the wheels out of the frame check the axles and overhaul them when they're even just barely gritty. Its really easy. 15 minutes tops once you've done it a few times.
Working on these old style loose ball hubs very is simple. It Just takes a little patience learning to adjust them perfect.
I guess not many people do this but your video helped a lot. I successfully changed the hub body. Initially I thought I can take it out without disturbing the ball bearing but cleaning that up was very easy. Now it pursue a kitten
great video! serviced the front hub a few days ago. Saved the rear hub for this weekend
just about to service my old mtb hubs. The magnet idea is brilliant!
Best video for sorting out rear hub. Thank you sharing your knowledge.
Reminds me of servicing my super record bb back in 89'... the bearings were all loose. Took some time and patience but man... it was butter smooth.
Great video as are the others I have looked at on the channel.Very good and precise description of steps to take.😊
Thanks very much.

Spot on with the instructions and video, best I've seen!
Cheers for posting that video, really helped me out, didn't realise it was so straight forward
Cheers Evan
Perfect video for this, I brought a new freehub then found this video, just got to hope the freehub fits OK then I'll investigate the old one
Thank you for a very thorough and clear tutorial. You have a new subscriber.
I found that a pair of face tweezers works amazing for picking up and placing bearings into your hub. Just a tip but you can use a little screw driver
Best video I have watched on cup and cone. Very detailed. I dont think I packed enough grease in mine, nothing came out. I might have also over tightened a touch as I felt a little tension. Thank you so much for making such a detailed video.
Excellent tutorial...well done in taking the time and effort to produce it. Thankyou 🚵👍
Nice informative video! Made complete sense, and I’ve got to do this to my mountain bike.
Glad this vid is still up. Big help thanks. Obviously
Perfect thanks, just confirmed that I’ll be off to the bike shop tomorrow 👍🏻
Excellent thank you!
My new wheel was way too tight and grindy, the locknut too was as tight as can be and a pain to get off
Brilliant such a clear slow instruction perfect thanks
Excellent step by step advice 👍
Gracias por la instrucción. It helped me to do it right. Regards!🚴🏼♂️
Fantastic video , thank you Free To Cycle .
Great walk through
Thanks friendo! Been awhile since I did this job, I needed a refresher. Sub'd!
Great video, very clear. thanks man!
Thanks! That was the tutorial I was looking for.
Great video.Very well explained thank you.
ThankYou so much for this video, I gave it a thumbs up and suscribed.
Concise and to the point, Thank you!!!!!
Really useful tutorial, good job.
Great instructional video, thank you.
well done video. i appreciated the attention to detail.
Clear, sensible. Thank you. Like so! 🙂
Yes! A multi spline wrench. This fellow is more knowledgeable about the proper tools for this job than any so called bicycle mechanic that I have spoken too about this free hub disassembly procedure.
Thanks! Glad it helped you out.
What size?
@@leonshamis11mm
@@ioannidesalex but what size is multispline?
Super helpful. Thank you so much. Grouseman
Great video, best one i've seen 👌
It's an M12 multispline bit if you want to purchase the correct tool to remove the freehub body. I had one in my toolbox that I bought about five years ago for the flywheel bolts on a Volvo T5.
This video nails it! Thanks!
excellent tutorial so good i subscribed and liked
Great very systematic top job.
Great vid. I've done mine. But think my bearing race, if that is the correct term (the bit on the axil where the bearings run.) Is pitted. Time for a change? I think yes.
Well done! Thanks!
Great vid mate
Brilliant. Thank you.
Thank you so much. This was the most informative video on removing and cleaning the free hub . .
Great video. Thanks
Thanks for that. That's my weekend job planned.
👍great video, I've got a free hub that slips, and not fully engages every know an then, hopefully the free hub can be replaced, or its a new wheel😒
Great video! I noticed my hub is having a light grinding sound. Time to service it and this will get it done. Any thoughts on a good grease that has low friction capabilities? Thanks!!!
Great tutorial, I am wondering if you can install a sram XD driver to this kind of hub?
great instructions, right when I needed them
I suspect the clutch(es) inside the freehub body are not springing back, because the bike wasn't used for an extended period of time, and was stored outdoors in the tropics.
is it OK for me to remove the dust cover gently using the gear pulling jaws (I have them) or something, and then clean the inside of the freehub, and put it all back together?
I know some people will just order a new freehub and replace it, but:
1. I prefer to fix it if it is possible
2. the availability of such parts is not guaranteed where I live
thanks!
PS
of course if I find out the clutch(es) is/are broken, I will be forced to buy a new wheel maybe, which is easier than sourcing this freehub for me.
but I suspect they might be just not springing back because ot he old sticky half dry grease.
Where do you get your spline tool from? Can you send a link? My free seams to be an 11mm Hex, as 10 & 12mm don't correctly.
Well explained!
❤ thanks you for sharing
What a godsend!
Great vid. Ta v much
do you think its possible to put a sram xd freewheel on it? thx
mine had a free hub lock ring, the same type you need those 32 teeth tools for
What is the size of the allen key you used? My maybe 11mm Hex? I try 10 too small & 12mm doesn't fit (big). Thanks.
What kind of spline tool is that? There are a lot of different spline tools it seems and I want to make sure I get the right one. Thanks!
Can someone make a video on finding a ball bearing that skittered off in me workshop?. I’m quite certain it is in the clutter somewhere, but I’m at a loss.
What size is the allen your using to get the free hub off
Which size multi spline did you use or which size Allen key did you use ?
Do you typically need a hub dust cover?
U R DA MAN! THANKS
👍
Are free ups universal for Shimano hubs
What is the name of this proper tool to remove the freehub mounting bolt ?
side 12 hex for me does not fit, do i need a bigger tool ?15 ?
Thank you 😘
What size is the 12 spline key? And what size is hex key?
excellewnt!
Thank you.!
Which size star l key use
What size hex fir the free hub
great tutorial! btw are you from wales?
Great video.
Sometimes when I tighten the locknut at the end, the axle turns with it. As I'm holding the cone in place with my cone spanner, this effectively loosens the cone again.
I do not have an axle vise at the moment.
Any thoughts/tips?
Do you have an edelweiss?
sometimes u have to put a 17mm-15mm spanner on both end on of the hub slightly(just slighlty) over tighten... then cone spanner both end to reduce it til just right.. trial and error(IE undo and start again).... or if u have a vise clamp the centre axle with cardboard to protect the thread to stop it spinning... depends on corrosion or how good the tolerences were on the cones lock rings and axle u got...happy trails...
Thank you very much. I accidently put the ball bearings together. Is it a big problem, because you said we must keep the ball bearings from the left en the right side apart. Thanks for the answer.
Not a problem as long as the bearings are all in perfect condition!
@@FreeToCycle thank you very much!
Is this shimano fh c201 hub?
Free up alankey size?
Great tutorial, very detailed! What size was the spline/hex tool used to remove the freehub body? Thanks
Mine was 10mm
Usually a M10 multi spline!
@@FreeToCycle Are those called something else in the states? (Sorry I'm looking on Amazon -- if I should be looking elsewhere can you please let me know where?) Thank you!
Thanks for the video, very clear. Just wondering what size hex head do you typically need? I've only got up to 10mm and so will need to buy a larger but don't know what size
12mm hex
@@FreeToCycle ah great, thank you!
@@miketaylor05 did the 12mm fit
@@steriophonic1 mine ended up needing a 11mm hex
My LBS repacked my rear hub. It was turning well for about 20secs+. Now when I spin it, it only spins for 10-15 secs. there is no play in the axle. Is it because of too tight cone? Does the longer the spin a good indication of correctly adjusted cone or just the smoothness of turning the axle?
Its just because its well packed with grease. Long as bearings are not rumbling & no play you are good to go.
What hub is this?
Thank you!! This is what I need to see.. removing the freehub body to service it. What size is that hex key?
It looks like ten mm
a 10 wont work needs a bigger more like a 12 or a 14
allen what size
What is the size of the hex head you used to remove the freehub body?
10mm usually
Total interessantes Video.

How to get new bearings, what size? Thanks for the video!
Front
Size 3/16" balls and 10 balls each side.
Rear
Size 1/4" balls and 9 balls each side.
Grease doesn't really matter which. The "TF2 lithium" stuff often comes with the ball bearings.
@@steve0680657 hi Steve, would this info apply to shimano hubs with the quick release mechanism? I was about to pop out and buy a job lot of the 1/4 inch for front and rear and the heavens just opened so I'm going tomorrow instead.
I tried to disassemble the freehub body but it didn't come off easy. Even with a long leverage extend on the 12mm allen key. Does anyone have any solution?
It is 11mm hex.... not 12mm
Hi, I’ve got a question. I need to replace my Shimano FH-TX505. Is the disassembly and assembly the same way as in the video or is it different?
Yes same basic idea! Your hub use’s 18 , 1/4’’ball bearings!
Great, thanks !!
I've watched RJ's videos on this and I've noticed after removing it he puts the freehub in a jar of solvent dries it off and drips hub/chain oil through it. Is it worth trying or should I just buy a new freehub?
You could try it first see how well it lasts.
@@FreeToCycle Yeah tbh I might as well try it, I'm gonna buy a new one anyway if I end up trashing it
Clearest video I’ve seen to explain how this is done.
Buy a new one. I tried to salvage mine and it was working, until I put it under the load of my bike. Btw, excellent vid.
