  • In todays video, for a bit of a change of pace, I'm heading out to do some urban photography. Not street photography, at least I don't think it's street photography.

What is urban? What is street? Why are we so fixated with categorizing things and become upset about it? Too many philosophical questions. 😋I don't mind you calling it however you like as long as you enjoy it and feeling creative while doing it.

Street photography has become bogged down in its own self imposed rules, too many gatekeepers milking it. Urban drops all those stupid rules and liberates. #notstreetnono

@@Protogen82659 I, for one, get tired of this endless hair splitting that may be a hit in the philosophy class at the local community college, but really isn't relevant in the real world. If it's on the street and it is a photograph it IS street photography.
One could pull at all sorts of ridiculous threads here. For instance, if it isn't street photography (according to people like you) and it is in a small town well, then, it is neither urban photography nor street photography. And how small does a city get before it is a small town. Now let's spend all day discussing the Sorites Paradox and determine just what removal of a grain of sand stops it from being a pile of sand. Or we could just go out and take more photographs. If a photo is striking does it really matter how people attempt to categorize it?

Labels do matter to many in photography it seems! I've been using the term urban for some time. I focus on form, light and colour...if I can include a person fine, but it's not as important.

I like your use of the phrase Urban Photography. That pretty much sums up what most of my work is. I capture and document the areas in which we live in or use in every life. That could include buildings, streets, signs, or anything related to transportation. I never include people, so for that reason I don't call myself a street photographer. Street photography seem to be more of a city type. While Urban Photography can include everything from big cities to small towns. Good video, I'll have to catch to some of your older ones.

It’s too bad many photographers get caught up in labels, which can set them up for failure. Some feel that ‘street’ is only valid when you capture images of people, in large metropolitan cities, with exotic settings, and the best ones will tell a story. And if that’s all you’re after, cool. However If that criteria isn’t available to you, and you focus on contrast, color and composition, then if a conventional ‘street’ image shows up, good. But the rest may actually be better images, of urban landscape, rural landscape, portrait, etc, or whatever else you want to call it, makes for just a great unlabeled ‘photograph’ that you enjoy. Thanks for raising the conversation!

Categorization is always touchy and maybe a bit silly but photographers love doing it. I think street photography is essentially photographing people in an urban environment. Urban (landscape) photography is when the city architecture, structures and location are the purpose of the photograph. If people are included it is like in landscape photography to give sense of scale and purpose. I personally don't care much about categorizations. I shoot what appeals to me at the time. However, I don't like shooting people so I have almost zero images of people in the 65 years that I have been shooting. So, I'm not big on "street photography" but I love urban photography.
