  • Hey guys welcome to an absolutely massive video where I go over the best and worst levels in each and every Super Mario entry. I had two separate videos on each topic in the past but decided they needed a major upgrade and needed to remake them into one definitive one. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I do and please like, comment and subscribe!

Grand finale galaxy was actually the perfect end to super mario galaxy. Where the beginning of the game has you waking up to a single Luma in a lone galaxy, the ending shows you the fruits of what you've done- a party, surrounded by your friends, the people you've saved. It's very heartwarming and just made Rosalinas message at the end of the game hit so much more.

For Super Mario Odyssey, excluding those which serves as Boss Stages, my hated Kingdom is Lake Kingdom. I felt the region was way too small compared to the others. Seaside Kingdom was better as there's much to explore especially underwater.

Super Mario Odyssey is my favorite mario game (not counting spinoffs) so it's hard to find which kingdom I don't like.
Dark side will probably be my least favorite but if we're not counting that, then probably Bowser Kingdom. Just because it isn't even the final kingdom and I feel we could've had the Moon Kingdom be Bowser final obstacle. Why did we need Bowser Kingdom?
Feel like the kingdom should've just been an extra kingdom centered around chinese design instead of making it Bowser focus.
Also, didn't like the bird type enemy gameplay all that much.

I agree Lake is kinda bad, like I get it's a Lake and not a huge area but my first playthrough I remember getting a Cheep Cheep and then.. finding the edges and thinking "that's it?" legit the most memorable thing was one of the sub areas with the zippers.. which is bad since that doesn't really include the main thing from the kingdom.. the water.. also sucks it's paired with Wooded as your choices, one of the larger kingdoms with tons to do.. and since you are forced to do both anyways it falls short..
At least speedrunners pick it since it's small and (if glitches involved) can be used to skip to metro and stuff

"Big Island", from SMB3, I feel, inspired Mario 64's devs for making Tiny-Huge Island, as it uses a similar gimmick of having everything much larger than Mario. And, if I recall correctly (correct me if I'm wrong, it's been so long since I've played to that point in SMB3), using pipes on Big Island, at least in one of the levels, also lets you shift everything from big to small, kinda like Mario 64's Tiny-Huge Island.

Strongly agree with Donut Plains 1 in SMW, but I disagree with your first pick. Navigating those ghosts in water is not what I consider good Mario gameplay. Other levels I would pick as the best would be the bridge level with the secret exit to Soda Lake which includes the iconic Yoshi sacrifice (or being a cape master) sequence, and is just a fun crazy level in general with all the saws and ropes and moving parts. Another is the Chocolate Island level with many variable routes decided by your actions and other factors and multiple exits, that one is really cool. Honestly, I would pick any of the Ghost Houses in the game over the Ghost Ship level, they are all super creative and tricky, and one of them to represent that and how original they were when the game came out (they seem like something that Mario has always had now, but people forget they were invented by Super Mario World, and blew kids' minds back when it first came out, so one of those should be on the list.

8-8 is one of my favorite levels but honestly i completely understand hating it. my biggest problem with the level is how one of the starcoins requires a mini mushroom, avoiding falling debris while mini is... annoying, to say the least. doesnt help with the kab-ombs running right at u if they get ignited.
the main appeal in the level for me is speedrunning it. i love taking a blue shell to that level just to run thru it, its always an exhilarating experience for me and imo its one of the most fun levels to do so in. (that might influence my love for it a bit honestly, but yknow.)

@@dominic7004 Seriously when I landed on Ruined Kingdom, I thought it was going to be like New Donk City. A world unexpectedly put in the game that looks different from what you expect from a Mario game and that dragon boss had me more excited. The screen panning over the world while you land didn't help either because it made it look like there would be more to explore than what was given. Than I defeated the dragon (who felt easier to defeat than Bowser) and realized that was all the kingdom was. Didn't really like the sub areas as much as Cloud's either.

My least favorite in Mario 1 is 8-3, simply because of the trauma all those grounded hammer brothers caused 5-year-old me. Though I understand why a lot would dislike 7-4 more. The correct path through the level is very awkward. My cousin called me long-distance (yeah, this was the early 90s, hehe) just to ask me for the solution to that level after she learned I could beat the game. My favorite level from this game is actually 6-3.
I actually liked 7-2 in Mario 2 as it had so much territory to explore, not to mention it was exciting to know I was almost to the end. It might even be my favorite from the game. Least favorite: 5-1.

I wish I could remember it better to say more specifically, as I only played through it one time when it came out, but I remember it being a great game and surprising me with how much fun I had with it. I wonder if the negativity has any relation to the general reasons (that I can't remember, lol) I went into it expecting nothing special, though...?

    • @TinyGuy97
      @TinyGuy97 Před rokem +11

The hate is definitely from the fact that it's a part of the new super mario bros series which had too many games coming out at the time.
Also, comparatively speaking, it seems to be the most uninspired and uncreative game in the new super mario bros series.
With the only "gimmick" being coins and the game reusing art style and music from new super mario bros wii.
Also, in 2012 Nintendo released New Super Mario Bros U in the same year, making it seem like people are seeing the same game over and over again. To make matters worse, next year they released New super luigi u which is just another new super mario bros game.
So, it looks like a rehash to the naked eye.
I don't think anyone hates it from a gameplay point of view, just from a rehash point of view.

it's a little scary but the level is mercifully short, if you spend most of the level running you'll be able to get to the end after only 2-3 swoops from the sun. on top of that, you can kill the sun with a koopa shell.

SMW - just want to say I successfully personally guessed that you might mention "2-1", or Donut Plains 1 haha. Extremely fun and iconic level. You are correct, there's so many good ones that it's hard to pick. I'm going to throw in there the last castle before Bowser. It takes the snake block mechanic from castle 5 (sorry it's been so long since i played the game I can't remember which Koopa Kids were which castle besides Iggy XD) and ups the ante further. I found it to be a fitting last castle before big Bowser's Castle.
As far as Tubular, this will be no surprise, but personally for me , this was the hardest SMW level I ever played. I'm 32 now, I played this game a ton in the 90's as a kid. Tubular would piss me off so bad, I thought, "Jesus Christ they really packed the heat for this one". But man it is SO SATISFYING when you finally crush it, because the OTHER Star World worlds are also unique and interesting, but they can be beaten much easier, and so yes it makes Tubular unanimously , notoriously infamous hahaha.
Edit: I think another one people hate (there's almost no "bad" level in this game), if I remember correctly, is Soda Bridge 1. Is that the one with the multiple chainsaws that, to get the secret ending, you have to fly under them all and under the end tape? Or either that level with the ridiculous amount of traversable paths you can turn on or off on the platform? Those are just annoying levels, but they're still not bad by any means.
Edit 2: Ok SM64 was a big part of my life too haha just want to comment on it real quick. I think Bobomb Battlefield and Cool Cool Mountain are indeed universally loved. One that I personally disliked, and I think it is another level many enjoy, is Wet-Dry World. Just for me personally, figuring out the correct water level for what you want to do breaks the flow of the action a bit. And also, i just don't like the environment and decor. Idk. Both areas of the stage feel like a bland, enclosed block of area with things. Also, Tall, Tall Mountain was not one of my favorites either. Let me be clear, there are no bad levels in this legendary game. I do like the level, but, idk, it's just bland to me, it's kind of linear, I do enjoy the slide section, and who doesn't like the monkey!!
    Great video man!

      @jedgrahek1426 Před rokem

Haha, it's so funny how people's opinions can differ or be similar... I very much agree with everything you say about SMW, except that I put that Soda Bridge (think it's something else like Butter or Chocolate lol, and it secret exits to "Soda Lake") level you mentioned as one of the best levels in the game, just because I think all the moving parts are neat and fun, and the Yoshi Sacrifice part of it for the secret exit is so iconic lol.
I also super agree about Wet-Dry World in 64, it is by far the most uninspired and annoying level to me, I honestly forget it's in the game sort of until getting to it because it's so forgettable. The Bowser's Sub world is kinda like that too for me, it just has that neat part with whirlpool at the start. The only thing I don't agree with you about is Tall Tall Mountain, it's always been my favorite of the later set of levels... but that's what's so great about these games, we both love them and have such a strong formative connection to them, we can just think about every level in each game, and remember all the highs and lows that they brought to us... and there's really almost no wrong answer, like you say, there are no actually bad levels in any of these games basically, and to a large extent this really does come down to personal taste, and I can't imagine anyone wanting to get seriously riled up or argue about this... it's just fun and nice feeling to hear what someone else's experience of the game was like, and what parts of it stood out the most to them personally.

For me, the best of 64 is that first level. I already felt the nostalgia. As for worst, easily the 100 coin star. Specifically I’m the underwater level where if you mess up getting maybe at least one coin, you won’t have enough and will have to start over

and i really like the tubular level. i dont think its difficult and i really like the level.
also. i like 8-8 in nsmb, i just hate the starcoin where you need a minimushroom, but thats in many levels in the game, but i just hate the final level in the game.
but thats my opinion. good video :)

In NSMBDS, the real World 8-Castle comes after 8-4 and before 8-5. You fight Dry Bowser at the end. The course you’re talking about here is 8-Bowser Castle or 8-Castle 2

Super Mario 3 is my favorite installments in the 2D series, but I HATE HATE HATE 3-8. There’s a lot of levels that can be really chaotic and grindy, but nothing comes close to how frustrating the tide levels are. Every single time I get to it I use a power leaf or the cloud to avoid the headache.

Nice vid! Here's my list, with only the games I'm super familiar with. Also, if my pick for a worst level is a small-scale level, I'll put it in parentheses next to a larger candidate for the title of worst.
    Best SM64: Bob-omb Battlefield
Worst SM64: Tiny Huge Island (Secret Aquarium)
Best Sunshine: Noki Bay, although my actual favorite is Serena Beach
Worst Sunshine: Gelato Beach (Corona Mountain)
Best Galaxy: Freezeflame, with Deep Dark and Sea Slide coming close
Worst Galaxy: Gold Leaf I guess, though I am partial to it (Snowcap)
    Best Galaxy 2: Fluffy Bluff
Worst Galaxy 2: Boulder Bowl (Upside Dizzy or Mario Squared)
Best Odyssey: Metro Kingdom, with Bowser's and Sand coming very close as well
Worst Odyssey: Mushroom Kingdom (Dark Side, it just feels so lazy, whereas Cloud at least has originality)
I'm sure my Mushroom Kingdom nomination for "worst" is gonna be controversial so I'll give some of my reasoning for those curious. Probably my biggest complaint is that it doesn't feel very true to the Peach's Castles of SM64 or Mario Kart 64, or to the Toad's Towns of Galaxy and Paper Mario. The castle interior is just one big, empty room, the outside areas don't have any returning elements from previous games (minus the bonus courtyard area), and this kingdom is the worst offender IMO of Odyssey's "island problem" design philosophy. I have more critiques I could give, but those are the main ones that seal the deal for me.

For the Galaxy games I liked Toy time Galaxy, the toy aesthetic was awesome, climbing the giant bowser robot and destroying it is memorable, and it was the only stage where the design allowed the Spring mushroom to be fun!
I hated the Dusty Dunes Galaxy with quick sand, it might be my boss, but I don’t Desert levels that don’t do something creative, and the comet for this one made me rage so hard it isn’t funny!
For Galaxy 2, puzzle plank was cool, but I loved throwback galaxy, it being one of the last levels of the main game was awesome, and it had enough new surprises to not be a rehash, plus unlike some other levels the difficulty is balanced while being fun!
In galaxy 2, I despised the level that was just like throwback galaxy, but instead of being a revamped remix, was a annoying rehash, Stone Cyclone Galaxy is CC annoying with how much it tests your patience, is difficult in an un fun way, and it was literally in the last game as a minor mission segment, meaning that it was not even a cool reference!

While I won't deny Tubular sucks, there is a much easier way to do it than as balloon Mario.
Grab a blue Yoshi from Star World 2, then eat a Para-Troopa from the first swarm of them and just use Yoshi flight. You might also need a Cape Feather for slowed descent and you might need to time spitting out that first Koopa and eating another to prevent Yoshi from swallowing it and losing his flight permanently, but it beats dealing with Balloon Mario's awkward controls and utter inability to defend himself.

I think that 9-2 for NSMBU is a good contender for worst stage. It's called, 'Run For It!" and it's a fitting name. The entire course is a P-switch run with tight jumps. At the end you even have moving platforms as well. Not alot of leeway is given for this course, and if you fail to make it to the next P-switch, then the blocks turn to coins. The anxiety-inducing P-switch timer in the background doesn't help making those tight jumps either. This level sucks.
