    A lot of the time it is not the show itself that 'romanticizes' the illness, it is the viewers who glamorize it instead.

      Exactly! But like look at Lilly, she's gorgeous, even in the movie. How do they expect young girls and women not to wanna look/be like her? Anorexia is often considered a "pretty girl disease" or played out in movies as something the "popular girls" deal with. I think the film could have been uglier, like showcased the really unattractive parts of an eating disorder.

      Oairea B I think you are absolutely right. I suffered from Bulimia Nervosa almost 5 years, never did I think they glamorized it. I personally think Lily is a beautiful beautiful actress, but I did not see that beauty in her for the thinness of her and the malnutrition look she had was nothing close to glamour. I personally do not think they glamorized the illness, but did an excellent job portraying it.

    I feel like if anyone makes a movie/show on any mental disorder or problem, people are just going to say they're glorifying it or romanticising it because it's being talked about it.

    • @norse1585
      @norse1585 Před 7 lety +221

      ʟᴏᴜɪsᴇ ʟᴜɴᴛ IKR! It's so irritating! And generally the people getting offended don't even have a disorder themselves! I have bipolar (among other diagnosed illnesses) and an ED, and neither this nor 13 reasons why were offensive to me at all. People need to stop trying to censor portrayals of touchy subjects just because they are potentially triggering.

    • @louiselunt6805
      @louiselunt6805 Před 7 lety +53

      13 Reasons Why was romanticizing mental illness. You can't claim otherwise when the show refused to even say what Hannah was suffering from. When the show turned a bullying awareness book into a mental illness awareness show without mentioning: depression, ptsd, anxiety, bipolar or whatever it was Hannah had. When they added extra drama and extra romance to the show to make it more appealing and then left the first season on a cliffhanger to get a second season and make more money. Or when lines like "I cost a girl her life because I was too afraid to love her", "You can try loving someone back to life" and when scenarios like Clay confessing his love to Hannah and her hinting that a confession could have saved her life were added.
      There is a very fine line between glamorization and awareness and stories. There are plenty of shows, books and movies that don't glamorize anything and have a very accurate or respectful portrayal of suicide attempts, mental illness etc. For example, in the show Glee a character attempts suicide after being victim to his classmates bullying after they find out he is gay. Although the whole thing takes place in ONE EPISODE, it is not glamorizing suicide at all.
      I was diagnosed with certain mental illnesses when I was 10. I am turning 19 this year. 13 Reasons Why did not offend me. But that doesn't mean it didn't glamorize a serious issue. It didn't offend me because it didn't have the power to offend me. But many other clinically diagnosed people were offended by it.
      There are many shows and books that don't glamorize mental illness. 13 Reasons Why is not one of those. To The Bone is one of those.

    One day recently I got on twitter and I saw a headline about the director getting backlash for To The Bone and I'm like, hmmm I should check that out. Watched the trailer and I was like, why is the director getting backlash? It looks like a movie that will help those with eating disorders to realize that they're not alone and to find the strength and courage to get help and for those who don't have it to encourage those who have the disorder to get help. I don't see eating disorders being glamorized. It's a message for the world saying, hey there are millions out there struggling with this and people are ignoring it cause it's an uncomfortable topic and if nobody says anything then I will. imaPotato I'm really sorry you are going through that but there is something you fail to understand here; there is no way for people with eating disorders to avoid triggers. None. And this is coming from someone who has been fighting anorexia for years, I am at a healthy weight now, but it's always a struggle. Do you want to know who my biggest trigger was? Not a show about anorexia, not a movie "glorifying" it. A singer. A girl in a music video became a huge trigger. That doesn't mean I am going to go after every little thing that might be triggering. If I did, I'd have to lock myself away and never look at the outside world. Living with an eating disorder means having the tools to deal with things lime that because why is the world going to stop and question every little thing just because of me.
      Personally? I like the fact that they are making it a comedy and taking the awkwardness and uncomfortable parts of the situation away. It would make it a little easier to handle when it is not looked at as just an illness but as something that has ups and downs. Something that can be addressed and not by walking on eggshells around the patient.
      If it's really that bad for you, talk about it with your therapist. Watch it with them. Ask them questions. But don't fall for this mentality that just because you have an illness, showing it on a screen is suddenly the worst thing anyone can do. They are not doing it to hurt you or me or anyone with an ED.

    i've seen the movie 3 times so far and i absolutely love it. i've also seen many people saying that they romanticized the concept of anorexia and it was not accurate, but i didn't see either of those things. If showing bruises on your back from sit-ups, showing hairy arms, and fainting from malnourishment is romanticizing an ED than i guess i don't have the correct definition. and for the comments saying it isn't accurate: everybody has different stories. Just because it doesn't depict your story and your struggles, it does not mean that it was inaccurate. Personally, i found it relatable. I've had an ED and i still find myself struggling sometimes, and somehow i found comfort in this movie because i saw myself in Ellen/Eli.

    I think this movie will be really good for people who know someone with an eating disorder and help understand them. As a person who had full-blown anorexia with intrusive thoughts (feeling possessed to control my food intake and exercise), I got so frustrated when people asked if I was starving myself for boys. *It was about control*. No matter what the initial reason for weight loss was, I felt more in control when I lost weight (as those whith anorexia find), I felt more discipline, and I quickly became obsessed and I *couldn't* just stop. I was so self aware of my stomach and if I felt slightly full, I felt like a guilty glutton with no discipline. I didn't judge others on their weight (most people with anorexia don't, but some do) All I cared abiut was my weight, my body fat percentage. And if it was underweight and under a healthy body fat percentage, *I felt safe*

      Rudolph Rudolph for me my bulimia is about yes losing weight and yes control but for me mostly a sense of accomplishment. I actually started the self induced vomiting with a goal of losing weight and relieving my self if he guilt and panic I'd feel after eating. Eventually I realized I couldn't stop because it made me feel like I had finally done something right when I failed at everything else. All my
      Siblings are incredibly intelligent people and I'm just average so when I purged I felt like this was something that was my own and something that I had accomplished which sound super messed up but that's why I can't stop like I'm finally doing something right, finally fixing a mistake I made(eating). I play the violin and I used to be the only one in the family who played an Instrument. My little sister is an amazing artist and my older sister is an amazing singer and my older brother is on his way to becoming a doctor. My violin is what gave me a sense of individuality and worth and I got attention from my mom because of it because I was the only one playing something. Then my older sister picked up the guitar and played super well and very quickly snatching the only thing I had to hold on to away. They get all the awards my family hangs up and they're all more attractive than I am and my brain twist all these feelings and finds a way to make it seem that this is all caused by my weight and the way I look.

      Hannah Boffin I completely agree, and personally I feel like in my opinion Hannah leant over more towards the psychotic side, although I do think she had very bad depression due to the action of others, I also believe that the producers made it seem like she was all innocent when she watched her "best friend" get raped and still went on to leave a tape for her.

      Also, sophiexeditings, Lily was born in England, but moved to the US when she was little and lost her Surrey accent. The accent in this video is her current accent.

    Someone close to me has been struggling with an eating disorder and watching this movie helped me understand her illness more. I do not know what it feels like to have this disorder but I know what it feels like to feel helpless in helping someone who does. It seems no matter how much you love them it doesn't cure it. It takes their own courage and strength to face it and deal with it. The love and support is needed but not enough. They need it for themselves as well. My heart and prayers goes out to anyone with this struggle..it is one of the hardest things I have ever seen someone endure. I think it's an underlying depression causing it.

    I think it about time someone makes this kind of a movie. I have an eating disorder but lucky I am recovering from it now. When I saw the trailer for this movie I got a kick in my body and a huge flashback because about a year ago I looked like it. And now that I have gained weight I see the change on my body and it's hard. But yeah when I saw this skinny person with so many issues and with so much pain I was relieved that I am on a better path :) so I think this movie can be a wake up call for so many people that struggle or have struggled with this kind of an disorder. I am looking forward to this movie and a huge applause to lily for putting so much of her self into this part ❤️

My 14 year old self would heavily relate to the character of Ellen and for everyone saying the movie glamorized eating disorders, I see the opposite. It was a very accurate representation of what it's like to have it and I believe it did a great job at showing the reality rather than glamorizing it. I can't even see how it would be "glamorizing" anorexia, coming from someone who's been through it.

It showed how it affected her parents and step parents her sister and her life. It also mainly showed how it affected her, I mean you could tell she (Eli) was dying inside knowing what was happening to her wanting to change it not knowing how.

    As someone with an eating disorder, I think the honest truth of why people think the movie is controversial is because people with eating disorders are afraid that other people will get their illness also. I don't know.. this might just be my truth, but it's a truth nonetheless. I hated introducing my friends to skins, or anything dealing with eating disorders because I was afraid they'd like what they saw and try to get an eating disorder also. And being sick, I felt like my eating disorder was the only thing special about me, and I didn't want anyone taking it away from me. I wanted it to be all mine. So I guess talking about eating disorders scares me, because in my head the conversation is either because it's being glamorized or because I'm being scolded. But what I failed to realize is that my eating disorder is what makes those sickly thin bodies, and those disgusting habits of chew and swallow to be lusted over. Because to me that is control. It's sick.. I know it is. But I was just afraid that this movie would make people want to have this illness. I was afraid they'd take this from me. This one thing I could call mine. But why would I even want it.. right?

    I wish this would get back to all those who made this movie - This touched more than just people with eating disorders - I was diagnosed with and Autism Spectrum disorder 3 years ago at age 59. The message is about an affirmation of life and the will to live. The suicide rate, attempted and successful in the ASD community is 1 in 3. Ideation is 3 in 4. This movie has touched me and others I share it with in my community. The movie shows in gentle and direct ways, many challenges people with trauma issues face. True to my autistic nature, I've watched this moved repeatedly - internalizing the important messages it brings. The quality of the acting, the script, photography etc... made it a tool for some to see into themselves... into that void we keep ourselves safe. But it is a void where life does not get in either... The message Keanu Reeves spoke came through gently but with great power - A matter of fact way - to touch the soul... thank you all for a truly unique and powerful therapeutic message.

  •  Před rokem

    I've watched this movie a milllion times. I struggled with anorexia a few years ago which makes this movie very important to me. This is the first movie I see that really catches everything about having an eating disorder. How "Ellen" thinks people are being annoying when they point out how skinny she is and how dangerous it is, what happens to your body when you starve: like when Megan loses her baby because her body can't feed them both, how they all tries to keep things they do in secret like the vomit in the bag, Ellen measuring her arms etc and how they all - even tho how sick they get, how many times they've gotten the tube - wants to stay unhealthy. It gets to me so much because I recognize myself in all those teens struggling with their body complexes and rules they've set up for themselves. I wanna thank the creator of this film and the whole cast for making this movie and showing the world, in a realistic and understandable way, how an eating disorder works and that you will not get helped by yourself when you're ill. Someone needs to get the help for you, even how old you are. Cause you won't ever see the issue yourself without someone's help.
