SHOW NOTES
Greetings & Salutations Heathens! In today’s episode of Talk Heathen, Eric Murphy is joined by Thomas Westbrook (aka Holy Koolaid.) Welcome back to the cohost chair Thomas, we are glad you could join us today. Also, Happy Birthday Thomas!
Let’s get to calls! Barry from the UK would like to talk about how to effectively promote skepticism and critical thinking in US schools. We do have an uphill battle here, due to how ingrained religiosity is here, but there are baby steps we can take to get there.
Gemma in the UK is up next, they are wondering about dealing with family members who don’t accept nor respect their coming out as trans as well as navigating their beliefs as a trans person. Love and hugs to you Gemma, we are here as your community if and when you need us. You are not alone.
Kathy in Pennsylvania is calling about the rise of psychics and religious belief during the pandemic. She is struggling with losing religion, what is true, and her beliefs.
Sam in Texas is asking the hosts to view the Bible in a different light. Going on to ask about what evidence can positively prove the God of the Bible. Sam, can you listen for a single God forsaken second? Have a conversation with Eric and Thomas, don’t preach at them. Ugh. Worst. Caller. Ever.
Kale Chip in Kentucky is wondering about attending a memorial service/altar call for a friend and being surrounded by the religious. They took her memory hostage by saying “you’ll never see your friend again unless you repent.” That’s frustrating, Kale Chip. I’m sorry that you are having to go through that, especially now.
Sean in Ohio is having trouble with wrapping his head around how libertarian free will isn’t a thing. The definition here being free will in the absence of or not determined by outside factors. Also known as random. He had a followup question, it was about philosophy wondering if it is just a bunch of navel gazing noise. This caller gets me.
That’s our show for this week, please continue to be safe in your area, get vaccinated if you can, and wear your mask. The world is better with you in it. Happy Birthday Thomas! See you next week!

WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Man, he is so SO bigly mad that Eric & Thomas will not walk down his script
Yes. He planned it all out in head and got mad when it didnt play that way. He used dishonest tactics the whole time.
Though he was headed for an aha moment and got pummeled.
"I just wanted to ask a dishonest, reductionist question and you insisted on trying to have an actual productive conversation!"
Dude couldn't even listen to Eric saying he was doing well. I wonder if all his conversations are like this.
That's par for the course with people on scripts. They tend to dislike being forced off script and having to defend their statements.
The caller is bonkers.
This was extremely painful. Not only have I lost brain cells, it thoroughly angered me and I am a very calm nice person.
Couldn’t agree more. The caller also forgets that there are blind people who believe in God, so seeing wouldn’t be a needed factor in believing. He’s also implying that people who are blind would be treated like Thomas was by him (the caller) as well, basically “doomed”.
I can just analyze the Bible and it’s history, puts in the same position as the Greek and Roman myths.
The caller gave himself away from the start as condescending and antagonistic, but it was necessary to call him out not for poor social skills but for the flawed reasoning that lies underneath. The show doesn't exist to stage a personality contest (mercifully) but to get viewers to think about what beliefs are warranted and why. And callers like this one illustrate what unwarranted belief looks like.
The constant repetition of "seeing is believing" is a mark of dogmatic thinking. Repetition soothes the caller with the comforting sense of the familiar, which must be taken as true if you allow no other possibility to enter your thoughts. It's a form of brainwashing. And as such, it's a very sad basis for what must be a very sad, small, suspicious life.
I'm impressed that Eric was able to turn this into a teachable moment, even a compassionate one. It would have been all to easy to put this guy down. But what purpose would that serve?
Speaking of lost brain cells, the longer I listened, the more I suspected the caller was drunk. After six minutes I couldn't watch any more.
This clown is cracking me up .
People like Sam need help badly.
He does need help, he just wouldn't know what to do with it.
People like Sam feel they are the ones to bring help.
Every time he says "listen" is maddening for the sole reason that he himself refuses to listen.
Sam was incredibly rude, kudos to Eric and Thomas for their patience and exposing the hypocrisy of Sam's lack of integrity
Sam has a script he wants to follow, and he is Oh So Mad that they won't follow it.
This caller was a pure waste of time. Salute to you Eric. You are better than I am. I can deal with ignorance. I can deal with assholes. I'm an asshole myself. I can't deal with stupidity.
He's a waste of a lot more than time.. lol
Whiniest caller ever. It was like listening to my upset 3 year old.
That is an offense to all 3 year old children.
your 3 year old is almost certainly more intelligent, more well-adjusted and more capable of having a grown-up conversation.....even while high on sugar and coffee, in a toy store, on christmas morning, with the honest-to-god-real santa claus handing out gifts...in that state, your 3 year old is almost certainly more intelligent, more......blahblahblah
@@j3pelfrey offended or not, it's not as if they matter....I mean...we're talking about halflings here...they're not real people...not yet anyway....more like overdue abortions. SHIT! what do I call them now, now that Roe v. Wade and the notion that women are people, have become anachronisms? Wood-chipper feed? Help me find some neutral language here....

'Does sam need to shut his piehole to hear Eric and Thomas speak?'
Agreed
Gotta love the bad preacher approach. "Oh, I was going to agree with you" means "I have a prepared spiel and you're blocking me by not agreeing to my deepity"
I'd love to try some of my magic tricks out on this guy cause he's gonna have to believe I'm actually magic.
What a fantastic point they should have made - so if you see me cut someone in half do you believe I actually cut them in half???
Yer a wizard tooter!
what if he just concludes that you're God?
@@TheSnoeedogtime to start tithing
Sam has never seen an optical illusion in his life
That he knows of.
He has if his claim is that he has seen God.
If I had God stand in front of me, I'd still need evidence to prove that the being before me is God by definition of whatever holy texts I am provided.
Someone standing before me saying "I am God," won't do it for me.
The aurora borealis is in my kitchen, but you can't see it.
@Supernintendo Chalmers "What does god need with a starship?" 🤔
@Eastern fence Lizard Reptilian Elite Under Lords are proof of your claim.
Long may they rule.
That was the most frustrating call I’ve heard in a long time. They were much calmer than I could have been. I don’t handle being talked down to well. He had no interest in an honest conversation. “There’s no help for you”... wow.
The irony is strong with that one.
Never have I heard someone who had less interest in listening and having a dialogue. All he wants to do is talk talk talk, he doesn't care at all about what they actually have to say, he only wants to stay on some script of nonsense.
@@ross-carlson The caller had a point, though. We don't wait to see the whole evidence to make up your mind about something. And very simple people make the case that seeing is believing, therefore asking for more would be too much in their minds. (That is, however, how magicians, politicians and con men do their business. Also sensacionalist news sources)
The guy was asking if atheists need to see to believe. Its not a hard question. Myself, as an atheist, could be convinced of things without seeing them. I have never seen a million dollars, but I do believe that such a thing exists. I cant think of what sort of evidence would convince me, but I am sure that, did an actual god exist, sufficient evidence could be acquired. Of course, the caller is a gullible shmuck, but that is another story.
The calmness is the problem with this call. Caller's much louder and hosts are passive. They should have muted him and discussed with the audience. If he refuses conversation, hang up. The problem with the calm style is exactly this. The caller dominates and directs the conversation here.
I couldn't comprehend trying to have a conversation with a person like this in real life. If they are that aggressive and loud to your face I would quickly walk away.
why walk away when they've presented such an obviously (justified) perfect opportunity to set them on fire, with a clean conscience (he brought it on himself...look at how short his skirt is...and those "fuck-me" pumps?!?!...he was beggin' for it!)
He keeps swapping his question because he is looking for a specific preordained answer
Nope...
It's because Eric NEVER answered his first question.
The first question was if atheists need to see to believe. The answer was "No". That is not, in any way, what Eric gave as a response. All that he did was dismiss it as reductionist.
@@MrFungus420 They did answer No, and tgat wasn't enough for him.
@@Izzmonster No, they didn't.
Saying that it is reductionist is not answering...it is not saying "no".
All that it is doing is saying that you don't like the question.
How it should have gone:
"As atheists, you have to see to believe, right?"
"No. We need evidence for the proposition, it is not necessary to see the thing being proposed."
You know...a clear, straightforward answer to a clear, straightforward question...exactly like how the hosts expect callers to answer their questions.
Eric fucked up this one.
@@MrFungus420 Incorrect. He was attempting to explain WHY it was a dishonest, reductionist question, but the caller wasn't interested in letting him provide that answer.
@@MrFungus420 They literally said seeing god wouldn't convince them. It didn't fit with his script so the conversation went nowhere.
You guys are too patient. Poor Thomas always gets the most annoying and condescending callers.
I really feel like there should be a "Matt Meter" where it grows proportionally to the idiocy of the caller. Once it reaches "Matt-Level" the hosts get to go hog wild on the caller with pejoratives and insults.
Eric is a G for not blowing up on Sam
Dude in the first 10 seconds of Sam talking and not just talking but interrupting them and being so blatantly fucking insulting and not even giving them a second to actually explain what they were saying with how when they searched friend answer his question after the said give us one concise question and then let us answer it instantly interrupted upon the first fucking word
Honestly I wish I could make teeth meet a curb because he is an obnoxious arrogant asshole who refuses to even give other people to fucking chance to speak so maybe they'll get him to shut up for a second
Like I'm at 7 minutes and I'm already boiling to the point that I don't want to keep watching if they can't get him to shut up for more than five seconds and if they refuse to actually hang up on him
Eric was being a pushover
@@MacLaw3084 more like patient and I would assume probably wanting to show the sort of bullshit they have to deal with
I always want you or Matt or whoever's doing the talking to ask in response to "if god was standing in front of you would you believe," how they would know its god and not the devil trying to deceive them.
Ooooh, that's a GREAT point. But also how would they know WHICH "god" it is?
This is where Sam was going wrong every time. His question always assumed the manifestation _would_ be God - his God to be exact. Not Satan, or aliens, or a delusion, or a prank. And Sam didn't want to address the possibility that this manifestation might not be his God, as being witness is core to his beliefs.
How do they know it’s even anything supernatural lmao
It's worse, Sam believes there is a god even though he has never seen one with his own eyes. It is bad enough that he would just automatically believe it was god but to believe there is one because other people have told you there is, is completely bonkers.
When the "HALLELUJAH" came on, the caller started laughing. Because deep down he knows god never actually appears in front of anyone ever
That’s just your opinion. You made a claim that you can’t back up. I wrote China on tweeter in the first part of 2019 . I told them if they did business with Alaska over the LNG pipeline I would give them a plague. You can say what ever but the fact is . You have to deal with it .
@@bogoney The only thing I'm claiming is that the caller is aware of the ridiculousness in the notion of god appearing on a live atheist show. I agree that's it's a ridiculous proposition based on the fact that every claim about god interacting with people has fallen short of providing justification.
@@2014saints so what do you mean by justification . Justify that he was here or justify why he was here . Or Justify he’s even real
@@bogoney By "justify" I mean provide evidence that the best explanation for an event is god manipulating or manifesting in reality. The demonstration of god's interactions would itself be evidence of his existence.
@@2014saints I agree with your statement. With not going down the rabbit hole. Meaning , Your reality is not my reality . That sort of thing . Then I would ask. What type of interaction . Some Supernatural event or something less . Or could it be someone going around and saying this will happen then when they do it on many things . So let me give you example . So if I said China would firer a missile off the Oregon coast and there would be a guidance system failure. Or if I said this back in 2014 that North Korea would fire three ICBMs in 2017 two would work and one would fail . Then you could say. I had prior knowledge . Then I could say we’re did I get that knowledge . My point being what’s not subjective.
I have to give much props to Thomas on this call. I could feel the path you were following, but Sam made it damn hard (heh) to get a good dialogue going. You made it further than I thought you might, well done 👍
Thomas and Eric; your generosity with your attention and patience is saintly in the best Heathenish sort of way.
They're the real angels in disguise
Is he physically capable of letting the hosts finish a sentence?
What an infuriating call. You guys have the calm of the Buddha.
Sam wants a specific answer from the hosts that he can then tear apart to prove they're wrong about atheism. When they demand he ask a very specific question he becomes defensive. Sam can't define the god he believes in because he's never thought about the details and can't provide hard absolutes about that god.
The "see to believe" comment is ridiculous. We "believe" in germ theory but can't see those tiny germs. We "believe" in gravity but can't "see" the physical attraction between objects.
Sam's attitude is one of the things that drove me away from god beliefs. That gritted-teeth, smarmy voice ("I'm trying to be patient with you!") is typical of believers when they become frustrated by someone demanding specific definitions and refusing to cooperate with their script.
It was like watching a train wreck in slow motion. I’d like to think I could stay calm enough purely out of curiosity, but idk...that dude was mad rude.
I know right! I'm the mother of 5 grown sons and if I caught anyone of them talking to ANYONE like this, I would shame them and ground them!
Some people say that Sam is still seeing and believing things to this day.
This dude would probably eat a picture of a cheeseburger.
Dude I LOVE Eric and Holy Kool aid collabs 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Wow - Sam is unbelievably condescending.
I always love it when people act like we don't believe in God because we can't see it. Though I was expecting one of those "you can't see the wind" arguments and was shocked to hear something significantly dumber.
It was either going to be that or "I see God everywhere, just look at the trees!". Guaranteed.

@@carolmosh4977 I would be happy, pleased and delighted if one single religious person... from any one of the thousands of human made doctrines could bring the scientific evidence that could conclusively prove
the existence of any supernatural entity or force.
So please bring it ...as I am very curious to see what you have for yours beyond blind faith and belief in very abstract books written by very confused and deluded humans who wanted life to be ordered from above..so invented books to then indoctrinate, subjugate, control and judge other humans through both artificial love and through fear of damnation...which by the way is also typically human!

But does ironically show that you have little to no real understanding of atheism or many atheists, But hey that's fine and quite common.
but I am always open for a good open discussion.... especially if and when new scientific evidence appears.
I am not sure what you personally think or believe, and won't assume, but all the best whatever
@@humanitech Okay, now I am going to make an example out you.
The following testable scientific facts demonstrate “incontrovertible” scientific evidence for the existence of God, where God is operationally defined as a "Higher Power" above and beyond all time and space or the Universe.
1. Man can't create a Neutrino from nothing or zero energy.
This fact is demonstrated by the following equation:
UT=Ui+W+QUT=Ui+W+Q which represents the maximum internal energy (UT) that could exist in any system required to create Neutrinos.
2. Neutrinos do not create themselves from nothing or zero energy.
This fact is demonstrated by the following equation: ΔU=W+Q which represents the change (ΔU) in internal energy of the Neutrino and proves it does not have the power to create itself from nothing or zero energy.
3. Neutrinos are not eternal and will decay. In fact “Neutrinos are born in various decays, which is when a particle changes from one type into another." Neutrino Decay as an Explanation of Atmospheric Neutrino Observations V. Barger, J. G. Learned, S. Pakvasa, and T. J. Weiler
Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 2640 (1999) - Published 29 March 1999
This fact is demonstrated mathematically by various equations including but not limited to : (ν ̄e + p → e+ + n ) which proves at least one type of inverse beta decay. (Bethe and Peierls, 1934) and experimentally (Reines 1976). And (μ → e + ¯νe + νμ) which proves Muon-Neutrino decay. And by the fact that Neutrinos will reach a maximum state of Entropy like everything else in the universe, and experience a heat-death.
4. The lowest power detectable Neutrino particle required a "Higher Power" above and beyond the universe to be created.
This fact is demonstrated in two parts. First, by the detection and measurement of the Lowest EPP (energies-per-particle) which is represented mathematically on a scale of ~100-200 meV. where ~1.95 K = CNB. The power level measurements are based on the cosmic microwave background temperature power spectrum.
Second, by conservation laws which demonstrates the universe has the same amount of energy unless it’s added from the outside. Thus proving the final fact that the Lowest EPP Neutrino at the earliest beginning of the universe required a “Higher Power” above and beyond (outside the universe) to be created.
Summary: The preceding testable scientific facts demonstrate “incontrovertible” scientific evidence for the existence of God, where God is operationally defined as a "Higher Power" above and beyond all time and space or the Universe. Therefore, while not a hypothesis or theories, the rules of the scientific method require the evidence to be falsified by citing or conducting repeatable, objective scientific test(s)/experiment(s) that falsify the data presented. Until such “falsification” the “incontrovertible” scientific evidence invalidates the Atheist belief/position there is no evidence for the existence of God.
i gotta watch the rest later. u guys had so much patience 😤
May I attain in life even HALF as much chill as these hosts. Holy dog poop the chill these hosts demonstrated on this call. Wow.
Eric and Thomas were really patient with this troll.
Sam is just lost in everything!...and can't focus on anything.
Just a minute in and it feels like he wants to preach, not have a conversation. Won't let Eric or Thomas answer the question he asked and just talking over them.
He had a script in mind. That was a loaded question that no matter what they answered, he could respond to in the manner of his script.
This one hurt my brain.... Eric, Thomas, you have insane patience, I commend the both of you
This question comes up all the time on here and AXP - "what would it take to believe in a god?" And I think many religious callers find the answer "I don't know" to be frustrating. I'd need a lot to be convinced. Not just seeing a god in front of me. First I'd need to find out if I'm just seeing things, like Thomas said, maybe I ate some bad chicken last night, maybe I'm high, maybe I'm sleep deprived. If I determined that this figure in front of me is real, then I'd need to see that god do something miraculous, like heal an amputee, raise the dead, grow a tree out of thin air, make people disappear and then reappear, maybe create another adult human male out of the ground, etc. Just seeing a god in front of me wouldn't do anything.
Very well put - I've seen some crazy shit, go to a magic show for example. If he sees someone cut a woman in half does he believe it? It's right there in front of his eyes!
Hell I'd settle for a "mountain moved or a mulberry tree cast or amputees healed or 2 or 3 gathered ...will be done" stuff.

The volume levels were all wrong, with the caller being much louder than Eric or Thomas. This caller absolutely needed to be "handled" in the way Matt D. would have. He was permitted to behave badly in the beginning of the call and that set the tone. You absolutely have to FORCE these "script-pushers" to answer your questions when asked, not allow them to just use the time to keep pressing on with their agenda… if they don't comply, you drop the call. Many of these callers will only treat you as well as you demand of them.

He’s raging at atheists because they brought up good points and have made him question his beliefs. He’s having an internal crisis.
He went through fundamentalist Christianity.
This was a great lesson that Thomas and Eric taught us! Tracie from Atheist Experience said, (I'm paraphrasing) "ignore the ad hominems and red herrings and STICK to the topic and the facts will either destroy their plan or cause them to rethink for a better purpose". She did that consistently and it was demonstrated here! Gone ahead Thomas and Eric! Great job!

I've been watching Athiest Experience for a few years now.. Discovered Talk Heathen last year. Am I the only one who finds myself leaning to Talk Heathen more and more? Not that you need to choose ofcourse, but AxP seems to just be a montage of Matt hanging up on people in 3 minutes flat.
As much as these conversations can be extremely frustrating, Eric and Co always do their best to have a conversation that can be learnt from. That for me is how change comes.. Slowly through patience and persistence.
Matt hangs up on crazy and miserable jack ass callers a lot faster because he has no interest in wasting his and the audience’s time.
People like Sam here, have no interested in having a productive conversation and essentially just disparage the hosts and preach. Matt has enough experience to know that and would immediately block and ban people like Sam without hesitation. It’s their show, they can do what they want.
If they do not want to treat the hosts with any respect and come in with sneaky tactics and then insult/threaten them, then by no means are the hosts obligated to waste their time with that. It is a privilege, not a right that the callers come to this show. They are not entitled to a platform. It’s like a house guest coming to sell their shitty spiel of a script to sell their shoddy product, taking a shit on the carpet and insulting the owners while simultaneously acting like a victim for getting called out on. Any rational host’s response to that is an immediate booting of that trespasser and never welcomed to come back again.
This guy really loves to hear himself talk. He kept repeating himself over and over and over!
Love you guys!!!! Keep it up!
2:20 Oh here we go
Eric, a wine that gets better every year 🤠💪
And Sam, a whine that gets worse.
Hardly. He's the worst presenter on the channel. He doesn't listen but instead follows his own agenda.
Ofc, Thomas needs to see to believe, ... it's Thomas!!!
Is Jamie ok? I know he acted oddly and didn't return, I hope he is ok and doing well. I kinda forgot about that thing and just was reminded. Seemed to be a bit of a mental break, don't know if the episode is still up but he got pretty out there that day. Anyway if anyone knows let me know if he is alright. Thanks.
Hi! Do you have an update ?
Classic gaslighter. This guy is deliberate and well practiced.
You need to see god in order to believe in him. This, according to Sam, is a question. Beats me.
Thank you for not letting him preach! You are great!
Blessed are the ones who havent seen but still believe
Excuse me while I break a few windows with my fist and bang my head against some bricks.
I could just imagine Matt within seconds of this call “what do you mean seeing is believing, you don’t see air and yet you believe it right? Youre already engaged into some sloppiness there and you need to clarify that”
That would have disarmed the caller keeping him from bringing up that statement over and over again. The call would have been easier to handle
when the caller starts talking over the host the host audio suffers more than the caller and it sounds like the host is not in control of the situation. Could this be fixed please?
What gets me is the fact that Sam thinks he *was* doing charitable listening by "being prepared to agree" with them... as long as they said what he expected. That's not what that means, my friend...
I’m honestly surprised it took so long for Eric to end the call.
Well he wasted the first 5 minutes
Caller states"Im Not talking about religion or the bible" he then goes on immedietely using the bible and the x-tian religion to support his views, this guy has no recall of what hes saying, its like dealing with an automated call system but less rewarding...
I lol'd when he said doubting Thomas!
There are quite a lot of ‘Sams’ from Texas 🤦🏾♂️
It always end up badly for the caller when they claim to know and then insists on telling the show what they believe.
"Seeing is believing" Dang, Sam must think a lot of people, sometimes known as "magicians", have the ability to make cards pop in and out of existence from thin air.
Wish Matt would have been here to take this call...
Yes you need that.
Ok sam bring god on.
When he said “Thomas, DOUBTING THOMAS” like that was clever, I got so pissed off
I have seen lots of aliens (in the movies) so they must be real, checkmate Sam.
What Sam fails to realize is, that no human knows what the god he's talking about, looks like. Could Sam describe what this god looks like? An old man, with a long white beard? A spagetti-like creature? A giant squid-like monster rising from the waves?🤔
Old guy
White beard
Still uses horses to get around in 2021
This was painful. I think they were talking past each other. That tends to happen a lot when theist and atheists converse.
