BMW Service - R100RT/RS Oil Cooler Elimination

  • Elimination of the oil cooler is a fairly simple and inexpensive task. Why remove the oil cooler you ask? This may be desirable to ease oil filter changes on a fully faired R100RS or R80/R100RT as some of these bikes require partial removal of the fairing lower right panel, exhaust and/or engine mounting studs to allow the frame to be spread slightly. In this particular case the entire fairing was eliminated and the cooler is just too damned FUGLY and unnecessary.

Congratulations on the purchase of your R100. While I try to answer questions as quickly as possible I can not spend much time doing this without compensation. So make a list of questions, e-mail or message me here and I will reply with answers and/or an estimate of the cost involved to answer them all if they require an exhorbinant amount of time to answer. Thank you, Chris

Keep doing the Airhead stuff - I just bought one :D ('91 R100RS)
I love how you can do most engine work without taking it out of the frame!

Would have loved to see you install the oil filter cover just in case there's a possible issue with that. I've never done it, it's all new to me.
Also it would have been nice to see you install the oil pan. I'm replacing my oil pan with a MAC deep oil pan. Any tips would have helped.

Appears that the oil cooler-type /filter retainer/adapter has the infamous "fugly" thermostat; The GS "filter cap/cover/retainer" does not have the thermostat (at least mine doesn't)... thereby lower profile... making for far easier access/service...

Hey Chris, I also am deleting the oil cooler on an 82 RS, however I was wondering if it’s possible to use the flat style covers with the inner metal cup with the central bolt from the early 70s bikes. I’ve ordered the cover you have in this video, but I haven’t received it and I don’t want to wait any longer, so I found a flat cover.

I have worked on a few Guzzi's in the past. They are built with an entirely different mindset and not being proficient with Italian machinery I avoid them, Ducati, H-D and others to focus on BMW, Ural and a few Japanese models. It is not financially feasible for me to spend time 'learning' a new brand at this stage of my life. Few Guzzi's in this area and no one local to go to for parts or service has forced many Guzzi owners to become home-mechanics and source parts online from Harpers, etc.

First view of you videos. Thanks. I have an 1992 R100 RT for about 4 yeas, my first BMW and second bike. New to this. I have a good shop to do this stuff but I still like to know how it is done. Thanks again!

Don't forget to show stuff on the oilheads too!! They are now the "vintage" bikes.
I know I know, you show what you are working on when you are working on it.

    Hi Chris,
    Great video !
Do you think it might be possible to do the opposite, and add an oil cooler to a bmw r75/5 of 1971 by adding :
    -a longer pipe-
    -adapted filter
-and oil cooler cover filter ?
    Thanks man !
    Charles.

Hi Chris: Video was just what I needed. I think I'm going to get rid of my oil cooler. I didn't have one on my '77 R100RS fully faired, which I wish I still had. Much easier to change the oil filter. I'm trying to figure out what kind of triple headed screwdriver that is.

Sweet video. Just picked up an '83 R100, so I'll be watching all the R100 videos as well as sending you some questions, if you have the time, and don't mind either. Just a fair warning, I need to hear it, see it, say it, do it, and "poke the bear" until I learn. God's grace and forgiveness extends to my kind too I found out. :)

    Hey Chris,
I watched all your videos of the r100rt. I recently swopped my ducati monster 900 for a r100rt from 1980 and going to rebuild it as a cafe racer, now I also want to eliminate my oil cooler, but i can't find the cover anywhere here in the Netherlands. Could you maybe give me the partnumber, while the one in the video is the same here in the Netherlands, but its only the tube. That would be amazing. keep making the videos. it's super helpfull.

Great. I'll be looking for them in the future.
Do you ever work on Moto Guzzis? They seem to latch on to us BMW guys cause they have fewer fellow MG riders.

Great video man I have a 1983 unfaired scrambler R100, I am told I cannot remove the oil cooler as the bike needs it! I hate the look of it and want to remove the fugly thing. What is the low down here man ??? did it need it when the fairing was fitted but now naked I don't need it?

      @edwardjones8170 Před 9 lety

+Harvey Mushman I'd say it depends on where/when/how you ride. Summer in Florida two up you probably need a cooler. Maine in the fall probably not. Here is a good article bmwmotorcycletech.info/coolers.htm . Me I'd just leave it on, a cooler is less ugly then a seized motor in my book:)
