  • In this video I'm showing you how I did a USD fork conversion for my BMW R80 Custom Roadster project, nicknamed 'Earthling'. I contemplated for a year if I should just reuse the original forks or go with a conversion and there's a lot of though and consideration gone into what forks I should be using and why. I ended up using a pair of WP43s from a KTM. If you want me to make a video about the why of my decision, please let me know in the comments below. And also let me know what your thoughts are.
    I'm super happy with how this turned out, and I can't wait to progress more with the build. In the next video I'm gonna be taking a look at building a custom sub-frame for the bike. If you want to get notified when that video is up, make sure to subscribe and hit the notification bell.

    Have you seen the teardown for this bike? czcams.com/video/kooYph89L8I/video.html
    Or the engine disassembly? czcams.com/video/UYFOpLon8hY/video.html
    I'm putting a lot of energy into improving both the videography and my editing skills to produce quality content for your enjoyment. As I'm getting better it's also getting more fun. I hope you guys can see the improvements, and enjoy the content.
    Cheers!

    I need a magic box like that for my projects. :)

      I might just let you borrow it.😁😎

      @@volimotois there anyway "THE MAGIC BOX" can install my 7speed Hercules transmission, it is only 4 cogs wide, into
      my /5 four speed gearbox. Great call on headstock frame mod, rather than the steering stem.👍

      @@tcmits3699 Thanks very much! - And you know, "THE MAGIC BOX" could probably install it yes, but the problem is that the 7 speed gearbox and the case wouldn't both fit together into it, therefor it won't work.😆

      @@volimoto l don't know, when some people hear the phrase, "Oh that WON'T WORK" you'd be surprised. Good luck on your build, will be following!🤞

      @tcmits3699 I hope you’ll like the end result!👍🏻🏍️
      I’d be interested in hearing more about that 7 speed gearbox into a /5 tranny case! Sounds like a fun challange!😁

    Thanks for the Video. As a result I definetely will stick to the original fork :)

    • @volimoto
      @volimoto  Před 8 měsíci

      Will you maybe lower the original forks?
      If I had kept them, I would have done so as it’s quite commonly accepted that a bit more weight in the front gives the bike more agile handling.

    • @Straightleg55
      @Straightleg55 Před 8 měsíci

      @@volimoto Yes, lowering the original fork definitely is the way to go...and this is relatively easy to achieve. Still I think it would be great to have a modern upside-down fork combined with the classical look of the BMW.....but beneath the huge efforts that you showed I see a high risk to never get it street-legal here in Germany.

    • @volimoto
      @volimoto  Před 8 měsíci

      @Straightleg55 Getting it street legal in Germany could definitely be a problem. I think to do that, the way to go is getting custom made TUV approved triple tree for the fork legs, so the frame doesn’t need to be modified.
      Good luck on your build!

      Oh, and one tip for keeping the original forks but upgrading the brakes… If you have a mono-shock airhead you can put on the brake calipers from a 4V R of K bike of the era, and use a brake disc from an R80R or R100R to match the offset of the calipers. It’s a straight bolt on. I have 4V calipers on my K75 with R100R discs and it’s a massive improvement over the stock. You can probably use the 4V calipers on the twin-shock bikes as well, the bolt distance is the same, but need to figure out how to get the correct offset for the disc.

      @@volimotodo you foresee any issues upgrading the R100Rt forks to the later thicker forks, R100R and is it possible to use the original calipers and discs. Thanks

    It would have been easier to turn a steering stem and press it into the lower triple tree.

    • @volimoto
      @volimoto  Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks for your comment Tom! I think you’re absolutely right that it would have been easier!👌🏻However going this route, I haven’t compromised the rigidity of the fork legs by shortening the clamping distance and increased the rigidity between fork and frame. I also think that going the route of a shorter stem would have further lowered the front, which I wanted to avoid. Hope you like the video anyway. 🏍️Have a good one!

      🤣🤣 well, good thing I ain’t going anywhere near Germany! But jokes aside… It would probably pass a “custom” inspection.

    Did you do the video on fork choice

    • @volimoto
      @volimoto  Před 28 dny

      I never made the video. With the build taking so long due to many other projects going I also keep re-evaluating my choices and I do think I’ll probably replace the forks with a pair from a 390 adventure instead. The triple tree and the rest is good as is, but I miscalculated with the diameter of the wheel and I’d like some more clearance between the bottom of the triple tree and the wheel.😊

    What about the springs in the forks? Those WP43s are pretty soft. And the brake caliper spacing?

    • @volimoto
      @volimoto  Před 11 měsíci

      YSS sells a kit with heavier springs and preload adjuster caps. I’ll also use a heavier oil and do some testing to set up the forks properly when all is done.😎🏍️ Regarding caliper spacers I’ve designed a one piece alu part that will be machined out to provide more rigidity to the mounting points on the fork leg.👍🏻
