Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

I facilitate anti-violence workshops in high schools. In hundreds of workshops over the last decade, there hasn't been a single instance where the behavior, attitude, and overall well-being of students wasn't superior in schools with strict phone use regulation. It was the one constant in determining the student experience.
Younger people would be in a much better state overall if you couldn't get an "unlocked" phone until you turned 18. "Fireflies" for everyone.
@@RobVespabest idea that will never happen
Max has such a calming presence. I always like the eps that he’s on.
Almost as much as Jon. He's my calming, go to sleep voice...so soothing.
Suddenly everyone is gathered around “the radio” like in the 1940s
With all due respect Max knows nothing about technology and is posing as some kind of expert on China's tech advances when really you're speaking in the vaguest terms. Get an actual tech expert on the show.
I'm not surprised smart phone bans in Norwegian schools are a positive. Here in the land of school shootings, kids should have emergency services at the touch of a button. Yet another thing that works in a functional country.
Middle school kids are brutal. I used to teach and this was before phones in school. At that age they are so mean to each other. The cliques are so unreal. It is a scary age of development as it is. I think the phones must make it much worse!
Middle school kids are imitating adults to protect them from fear
@@fredhollis3749 Yes, and unfortunately the girls are more aggressive than the boys. But girls are especially hard on each other at that age!
They don't have to be brutal but unfortunately these children are not taught skills that will serve them the rest of their lives. You know boring irrelevant things like kindness, consideration, respect first for the elders and then for their peers and the very important lessons of self-control, self-regulation and compassion for humans, animals and the planet. And while we are at it how about a little independence. Once off the teat they should be able AND allowed to chew their own food and once out of a diaper, wipe themselves. But no. Parents are still performing these functions for their offspring well into adulthood. It sends these little darlings one message: You are incapable and probably won't survive without coddling. This breeds brutality.

The rumors about Drake got me feeling like QAnon 😂
The reason Chinese ai algorithm is the most sophisticated is because they have the most incentive. They have the most sprawling survellience apparatus on earth, they are trying to literally control over 1 billion people, and their investments reflect that motivation.
Totally agree, as a Chinese developer and best friend of a ByteDance algorithm engineer, I’m surprised to find so much discussion about the influence of algorithms on social media platforms in America. In China, I think algorithms are treated as the magnification of our traditional ideology that the ruling class should always control the core beliefs of every people in the society. China has a long tradition of making people willingly sacrifice themselves and have many inhumane beliefs in order to achieve ruling class’s ambitions. It’s the core argument of the most famous modern Chinese author, Xun Lu. Talking about controlling peoples mind, America is just a baby.
Also, in China algorithm engineers are incredibly cheap in payment, great in number, and basically have no options other than working for the few monopolistic Chinese Internet companies. We are also way more online than Americans.
As a college professor i struggle with the cell phone debate since i like to treat my students as adults, albeit young adults. You guys i think had a podcast awhile back about what short version content is doing to our brains and ability to focus and concentrate. Lots of evidence pointing towards moderating use. Can't believe you didn't link the study.
Between hearing Max talk about tech like he knows anything about it and the two of you being clueless on rap, “the culture,” and Kendrick Lamar together - this was a struggle to get through.
Interesting part about banning phones in Norway - I can’t imagine all the studies years from now looking at the long-term effects of smartphones on the thought-processes of young people (everyone actually).
My firstborn had a lot of separation anxiety so getting a phone made my pre-teen less anxious. My second child wasn't very responsible. He lost things, broke things, etc. So we waited until he was in 8th grade to get him a phone. He has never wanted most social media platforms. He's in college now and is almost solely on Discord and CZcams. He might have Snapchat, but don't think he uses it much at all.
Is it possible to get more info on the study or an actual link to it?
I’ve been ignoring this beef and now… you got me! Damn you…
About tik tok, what if there is no magical algorithm and it’s actually a giant mechanical Turk?
JK
Like the amazon grocery stores that just had people in India watching people in the USA!
Very enjoyable!
I love this!!!!❤️✌️
Whoever wrote this YT ep title has mastered the art of click bait.
That’s all these fucks are now. Click bait and trying to make us believe tik toks gotta go.
What do you even mean? Click bait implies mistruth. Were you not aware?
@goodrabbi7176 well, they are proliferating the "ridiculous comparison" as content. The click bait is that you get to enjoy the ridiculous comparison that they themselves aren't making but the point of it is to put two extremely internet hot things in the same title in a sensational way. I just think it hits a lot of marks well as far as getting people to click.
@@sleeperagent212 the very fact that they are discussing the exact thing you are calling clickbait dispels the fact that it is clickbait.
That’s how clickbait works.
This by definition is not clickbait.
Even if you use $10 words to describe your opinion. ;)
@@goodrabbi7176 I suppose we're just using different definitions of click bait. I can appreciate what you're saying if I assume your rigid definition. But I think clickbait is anything designed to increase clicks by being sensational and included for the sake of driving clicks.
The folks over at the 'Phone-free Schools Movement' are a good resource.
I think the chat GPT AI in a Google mini or Alexa... my hubbie always tries to make me jealous- he calls her Googes 😆
I would find it interesting if I could design an AI 'friend' who filled a defined role. If I was a student who wanted to know more about philosophy I could design a friend with philosophy expertise.
I’m excited to hear about the positive effects of phone bans in school, but I’m wondering whether kids have access to a phone for communicating with parents/guardians if they are being bullied/abused by students/teachers/administrators. Back in the day we had access to a pay phone near the cafeteria. I’m all for voluntarily getting away from these doom boxes, but what are the plans for safety - in schools or on the streets?
What? Kendrick v Drake broke through because of the culture: black fans. Be real.
There is literally no such thing as Hip Hop being independent black culture anymore. What are you even talking about?
Hip hop hasn’t been a black thing since the 90’s.
Especially in the era of social media.
YOU be real.
Jack Harlow and Logic beg to differ.
@@goodrabbi7176buddy if you’re brining up Jack Harlow and Logic to dispute hip hop being black culture you’re absolutely delusional
@@itzjay116 how about you read my first comment, so YOU can stop the delusion.
I was around listening to Gangsta rap when it was current. I was not the target audience. After Jay-z released “Hard Knock Life,” rap as a black art form was over…
It jumped the shark into pop culture, and never turned back. There were other popular songs by Nelly, and others, but all demographics became the target audience with the big Jay-z sellout of 2002(?).
@goodrabbi just like rock and roll, and jazz…we know how it’s going to go. With that being said, there’s a reason why Kendrick Lamar called Drake a colonizer. Hip Hop/Rap has become such a mindless form of music for the last decade, it’s obnoxious to see everyone from every race (notably suburban white people) use rap as the soundtrack for that part of their lives where they disrespect people, do drugs, drink to excess, act like they’re gangsters and break laws online in grating fake AV accents.
Max is colorful and a guiding light. Thanks Crooked Media 💛
I have to wonder how many tech companies worldwide have been working to reverse engineer tik tok's algorithms
I have an almost 5 year old. I am praying that by the time she reaches middle school it will be the norm for schools to have banned cell phones in school. I would definitely consider paying to have her attend a private school which had that rule, if the public schools don't do it. I would also pay for private school if they had excellent education around social media and general internet use, with an emphasis on the dangers/negatives.
Any chance offline movie club could be on CZcams?
For the movie club, please watch Sandra Bullock, “The Net”
Oh, the Drake/Kendrick beef is reality tv gold. But more so, the internet being rude af to Drake....like, Black Twitter has been very entertaining lol. It really is fun to follow
Drake deserves all the smoke he's getting!
👁️👄👁️💅🏾🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Shouldn't it be easy for us to figure out who started this?
Welcome back, Max!
No phones in schools? Duh. People shouldn't be allowed to use their phone while at work, either. It's common sense.
Aside: Younger people would be in a much better state overall if you couldn't get an "unlocked" phone until you turned 18. "Fireflies" for everyone.
I must say that my algorithm did not feed me politics about Kendrick and Drake. It was all about the culture. But my social media was mainly Black hip hop heads.
But it’s true….the machine is revving up to protect its investment this time it’s Drake
We are doing wait until 8th grade in our nc school. It has taken a lot of pressure off parents and children to resist smart phone until then. It seems to be working well, so far.
There are great people on both sides, I thought we knew that by now.
This is regarding the band of cell phones and the study done In “Norway” when it comes to economics the Statement is low income versus other countries low income is equal?
I need an AI version of Jon and Max.
This is Jonathan Haidt idea, banning middle school phones. He's all over the place promoting his new book which specifically talks about the benefits of banning prepubescent use of social media. Credit where it's due.
Haidt didn't come up with the idea -- it's been around for years. So: credit where it's due, and it's not due to Haidt. He definitely jumped on that wagon, though.
It’s also hilarious to allow Kendrick Lamar to be portrayed as the outsider, non-establishment folk hero as if he didn’t do a soundtrack for a Marvel movie under the Disney umbrella
He grew up in Compton. He became famous but he came from very little means.
Okay DJ Vlad
Why does profiting off the Marvel/Disney empire hurt your sensibilities? Because a Black man did the taking this time?
Uh….he is. Just because he made money doesn’t mean he didn’t come from impoverishment and break into mainstream by virtue of his talent alone. He didn’t do it through clever beats, he didn’t do it through nepotism…. What’s more his music is incredibly uplifting, even to those who are struggling with bad choices they’ve made in life. I can personally say his music has been incredibly helpful to me in my life, especially To Pimp A Butterfly and the Untitled Unmastered albums. He doesn’t pander to his audience and makes musical choices that are personal to him - he talks about mental health, racial equity, growing up in poverty, growing up in gangs, politics, raising a family. With that being said he probably did the soundtrack to Black Panther for obvious reasons….
Did you listen to the soundtrack? He did it because Ryan Coogler asked him who is also from Compton. He didn’t compromise who he was to do it. Disney probably didn’t know what they signed on for at all. I think the definition of outlier defines those two perfectly.
Octonauts! 😆 The addiction is real!
When India did it, people adjusted quickly, and Instagram and CZcams built big audiences (NYT April '24 article)
India also banned 50 other chinese apps
32:24 I disagree with this point. For people who have really low self esteem or fear of interacting with people, sometimes that fear doesn't go away just because you're talking through a screen. If you fear people judging you and thinking you're lame/stupid/annoying or whatever, an AI companion is a good way to have a curated, sanitized experience where there is little risk of any imagined harm. I get that for two very well adjusted people with healthy social lives, it is hard to imagine this, but trust me. There are people this will *really* help.
One other very cool use case I've seen people enjoying recently is the role playing aspect of this. If you're not a super nerd, please feel free to ignore me, but for those of us who like role playing games (whether tabletop or pc/console), but can't get the crew together to play them, AI can be a really fun way of having a short little jaunt through one of those worlds on your own. The thing knows the rules of DND 5e or whatever, so you can spin up a character and have a little adventure by yourself very quickly and easily if you're feeling bored.
They've made investments in EDUCATION. We have not, and it is starting to show everywhere, in every way possible.
How do we help people understand that having a little information and then thinking you know everything is so dangerous?
31:00 - Has Jon never heard the word "simulacrum" being spoken?
Perhaps not. I don't have statistics to back my opinion, but I don't think it is a word that is used frequently; spoken or in print.
I dont think its a word most people use in conversation 🤔
Just to be clear, this isn't criticism. Nothing wrong with only knowing a word from reading it. I still struggle with the correct pronunciations of "epitome" and "hyperbole". It surprised me that Jon of all people wouldn't know "simulacrum". With his background, I would have assumed he would have heard people talk about Simulacra and Simulation at some point during his college years.
We are not ALL addicted to it. And the agarithim isn't much more advanced than youtube in its ability to feed us content, they just have more users (more content) and feed shorter videos that are more popular because of our dwindling attention span. It's AI video suggestion agarithim is NOT what's groundbreaking/valuable, it's the apps ability to covertly purge users info.
Yes, it is great to have Max back, the show is not the same without him.
Kendrick Lamar vs Drake is just PR for an eventual teaming up in 2025 for a "rap battle" release. You heard it here first. That's right, kids! It's all performative and merely for the purpose of promotion.
After retirement did substitute teach but refused all assignments at middle schools!
I know Jon said he listens to Kendrick but I don't think he understands what is at stake for these two artists. Kinda felt like "oh listen rap music too." Just me?
The n-word is at risk for Drake here. The stakes can't be understated.
They've been working for months with Oracle here in California
I was waiting for Max to talk about Baldur's Gate 3 and he came so close
Note: the word simulacrum is pronounced sim-you-LACK-rum
I'm in college and TikTok has to be the worst thing that has happened to my generation. If its not banned it should be heavily restricted/regulated. About half of my friends spend 8 hours a day on TikTok and they all say they hate it.
Yeah worry about that. Tiktok in China isn't the same. They are giving everyone adhd.
The algorithm is opaque? And we don’t know what it’s doing?
One of the Funniest commercial in two parts was Taylor swift and drake… technically they weren’t in the frame together but definitely seems like a collaborative effort! 49:45
Honestly, when it comes to social platforms that I'm worried about TikTok isn't on top of the list-Meta is. TikTok rarely shows me things I never search for. As for IG and Facebook always throw random off the cuff content I have no interest in seeing.
Yeah, facebook also promotes genocides and sells every scrap of data they can to people who want you to die in crippling debt. Also pretty sure facebook has no qualms about cooperating with authoritarian governments, and I don't just mean the US.
tiktok algo is simple, it's always listening and tracking your movements on your phone, easy to provide targeted content when it's always listening and watching
Do bear in mind that bytedance was fighting the Chinese government on this point but that news just sort of fizzled away
What an irritating, negative comment section today. Either trolls, or not regular PSA followers, probably. 🤨
That was XO and The Weekend’s beef with Drake
I was at an event about a month ago and one person was absolutely going off the rails about the TikTok thing - I pointed out the why it's been proposed and I legitimately thought she was going to physically come after me. She said "TikTok is the only place I can get unbiased news. I see things from liberal, conservative and neutral news sources. I would lose that if I didn't have TikTok!" I was horrified - that's how you fall down a disinformation rabbit hole in my opinion.
When was the last time both sides were 100% behind shutting down TT. They got to see the real data and were ALL convinced that it is a real threat.
Then every app is a threat
Both sides of the aisle agreed on invading Iraq. Bipartisan legislation in the modern iteration is very often very bad for average people.
First thing a teacher should say when entering the classroom is "turn them off!"
U guys never wished Happy Mother’s Day. What’s up with that??

its really sweet that a country like China can justify their platform based on Free Speech in OUR constitution. Especially given the close meeting of Gus Wengui, Trump and Bannon.
There is no first amendment right extended onto a foreign company. I can't help but wonder if they even have standing. The Bill of Rights is for citizens.
The beef has been crazy to me. I have been heavy into now looking back I should have Coled it because he was the only respectable man in this. He preached peace since Forest Hill and once he did his diss realized that it was not him and apologized. That should be the culture in my eyes but when ppl have an idea, thats it. I expected this low level from Drake but I held Kdot to higher standards of a man and was disappointed in the mudslinging battle. I rather not be a part of this culture if this is what we champion. Very Judgey but its my thoughts lol
Bottom line: any Chinese company that gathers personal information is required to turn said information over to the Chinese government. That is the problem and that is why years ago I said no Tik Tok no no no no no no no no no no. And no TEMU and no Shein as well. There are others so when you order or open make sure you know where you're going

I'm neutral on the TikTok issue since I've never used it and I don't know the security threat details.

PS-- I think about the rap wars the same way I think about sports: not at all, because I couldn't care less.

@@carlplemens3733 I honestly don't give a damn about TikTok one way or another. Why should I have an opinion on something I don't know or care about?
It's just that I was amazed to see Dems & Reps agree on ANYTHING. Haven't seen that in a long, long time.
Lol. Imagine not knowing that keystrokes and search times havent been utilized for a decade plus by corpos like Amazon. You really need to stop being pundits and start interviewing experts
Bad adult fable damn! People are stupid.
Wait, obscure references that contain fascinating lore that can only be decoded by a committed online community... Is Taylor Swift the 'Dark Souls' of pop music?!
No, she is the music industry 🎉❤
The irony of how we describe kids having their phones taken away is fascism (not really, right), but as adults we can’t fathom having Tiktok taken away and how we’ll make every excuse not to is not only ironic, but reminds me of how much mental gymnastics we do not to crack down harder on something like gun control (or take your pick of any “intractable” problem in US society). It’s always something else and we try to muddy the waters by saying x isn’t the problem, it’s a, b and c.
Guns aren’t the problem, it’s mental health issues! It’s not Tiktok, it’s a freedom of speech issue!
Yeah tik tok should be banned for tracking key strokes. Only American companies should be allowed to do that because the American government can totally be trusted... or maybe... just regulate the whole damn industry.
This. They sound so stupid whining about TT key logging as if every app can’t do that. Plus China will just buy data some other way if they really want it
I am more worried about facebook and google
Just here to say the title is garbage.
Drake & Kendrick Lamar are not fighting with each other! They are promoting themselves. It's a fake fight.
Why is tik tok worst than Meta…because it’s Chinese owned?
Because the Chinese government, who do not have the best interests of Americans, have full access to the algorithms. China is an adversary, and if Tik Tok is not detrimental to younger people, why is it blocked in China?
Kendrick frshr
Tik Tok, Shein and Temu should all be banned and watched.
All of this is manufactured by Drake to get some attention

Who is Kendrick Lamar? First time I've heard the name. Plan to google it.
20:44 😅😅 This conversation is getting a little awkward, not just because of the fearmongering, they're starting to sound like the Temperence Union people when they banned alcohol, or when they started the war on pot, they sound a little like "this is addictive to me, therefore, it is harmful to the entire society and must be prohibited".... people used religion and "morals" to impose their will and beliefs on other people... like those who created the Comstock act.... I know that they don't have that ideology, but they are starting to sound too similar 😅😅....
As an adult who vapes, i am pretty sensitive to these arguments that big brother needs to ban addictive substances.
Y’all have completely missed a moment that BidenHarris can capitalize on given ties to the Obama administration & Swift.
You guys have easily dismissed one of the few common uniters, music.
Unfortunately, it’s only understood by certain ears/minds.
Who….do yall be following? Lol
I'm _really_ suspicious that the TikTok algorithm is _so_ much better than anything else of its type. Maybe it's the best at what it does now, but that advantage will probably be gone in a year or two anyway as every AI company on Earth tries to replicate or improve upon whatever Bytedance has. It's also very hard to believe that addicting videos are a tremendous national security threat.

Of course they can
Comparing a rap beef with the conflict in Gaza is not ridiculous--to an algorithm designed to keep you on your phones by sorting viewers into tribes by pushing negative content to the forefront to emotionally enrage you and then offer opportunity to engage online with the other side. I'd hope that wouldn't be lost during a podcast talking about social media.
