  • Our immune system is an incredible thing. It’s a complex, disease-fighting machine, capable of fending off attacks from bacteria and viruses. But what happens when that same incredible system stops fighting diseases, and starts attacking you?
    ____________________
    SICK is a new series that looks at how diseases actually work inside our body. We'll be visiting medical centers and talking to top researchers and doctors to uncover the mysteries of viruses, bacteria, fungi and our own immune system. Come back every Tuesday for a new episode and let us know in the comments which diseases you think we should cover next.

      you want to pay more to be lied to? Because a doctor who can't admit that he doesn't know just makes something up, and hopes you will be convinced, or sufficiently in awe of his title that you won't question. Most doctors know very little about the immune system or how it works, or why it goes wrong. They don't get taught that kind of stuff in medical school.

    *Now for a serious comment* my mother had lupus 30 years ago, she was in her 40s. She claims it was alfalfa juice that triggered her lupus. Survival rate at the time was 1/1000+ so we were very lucky. the doctor that treated her said he had never had a lupus patient survive. She is now well and 70+.
    We were very luck in Taiwan to have access to western meds like steroids to stop inflammation and Chinese herbal medicine to aid her recovery.
    I am happy to see there is more attention on this horrible disease but sadden to hear we still don't know much about why it occurs.

      I think not as it's not death by a free will conscious choice. Taking a knife to your throat as opposed to getting sliced by someone/something else. An aberration of the immune system is not a conscious choice.
      Nevertheless, it's still a pretty horrific way to go. Thanks goodness science has developed a palliative. Hopefully a cure is next.
      A thought experiment: if antigens is the trigger for the immune system to attack something, and they're created cuz of the slow cleanup of old dead cells. 2 prongs cones to mind. Either target the antigen marker for the host's DNA or figure out why and prevent slow cleanup of dead cells (or at least help speed the dead cell cleanup).

    In the late 1970s my father was on a trip with my mother to southern Africa and became deathly ill. He went to a hospital in Johannesburg (as I recall) and was diagnosed with Lupus by a doctor there who had been doing research on the disease. After stabilizing my father for travel back home to Florida, he sent along a packet of information on Lupus for the US doctors to better understand and deal with the care issues. Unfortunately my father succumbed and passed away in 1981 at 70. My father had contracted pneumonia numerous times in his life and that may have contributed to his weakened immune system.

    Just to provide some education that whole thing about getting a check up every now and then is not very helpful when it comes to Lupus. Lupus often goes undiscovered because general practitioners don't know what to look for. The most common symptoms of Lupus, like chronic fatigue, are common in a great deal of illnesses , you have to go to a Rheumatologist to be diagnosed. I was hospitalized at 23 with terrible edema in my legs to the point I couldn't walk before I found out I was experiencing inflammation caused by Lupus. And moreover that it was life threatening because it was also attacking my kidneys.

    There was a hypothesis about lupus and other autoimmune diseases that certain proteins we ingest from animal products or byproducts resemble our own bodies tissues. The protein enters the body in a place that it isnt supposed to be with another foreign agent. The body then associates this protein which resembles a part of your own body and attacks it. I have heard of a few people putting lupus into remission by cutting out animal products and by-products. Although, this isn't a well studied topic. A good nutrition trial and clinical trial would be nice. Especially an open access study so I can read it for free. Can't believe anecdotal evidence. Least credible form of scientific evidence that exists.

    Yea boiiii I have Lupus and it BLOWSSSS
    Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy lmao
    It's like...you get to live an almost normal life with medicine, but everything is worse and more difficult and will never be better, both physically with having red rashes and face swelling you have to try to cover up with green concealer so people don't ask if you've gotten in a fight, and all the joint pain from the arthritis doing normal tasks or exercise. Not to mention the sudden bouts of exhaustion lol.

    Did they really just call Type One Diabetes, Juvenile Diabetes 😬.

    • @jobroray
      @jobroray Před 5 lety +1

      Amilah, Juvenile Diabetes is a renounced term. It's really not an accepted term because Type Two diabetes regularly occurs in Juveniles, and Type One Diabetes often plagues adults.

    • @jobroray
      @jobroray Před 5 lety

      Amilah The fact this was posted THIS YEAR makes it odd that they'd use such an old and scientifically unaccepted term.

    • @jobroray
      @jobroray Před 5 lety

      Amilah It's literally just a quick google search, really not that hard to find out. Saying that's how it is for "most" people, really doesn't help describe people who aren't in that majority. There are a lot of kids who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Which would mean they technically got "juvenile-onset diabetes" even though it's a very different disease from type one and has nothing related to lupus. Again, a quick google search is an answer to a lot of ignorance in the world.

    • @jobroray
      @jobroray Před 5 lety

      Amilah Okay??? Asthma usually arises in children that doesn't make it Juvenile asthma. Celiac's disease usually arises in children that doesn't make it Juvenile Celiac's disease. You also ignored the tons of sources that come up that say FORMERLY called juvenile diabetes. Get a couple brain cells and read an article: consumer.healthday.com/encyclopedia/diabetes-13/misc-diabetes-news-181/type-2-diabetes-and-kids-the-growing-epidemic-644152.html

    • @jobroray
      @jobroray Před 5 lety

      Amilah I really don't know how to help you if you don't even know what the word regularly means. Again, a google search would help you. And maybe a dictionary while you're at it.
