The fact that Blinding Lights was released in 2019 and still in top10 billboard chart at the end of 2020 is maaaaad crazy.
Because of covid a lot of songs were probably delayed so that's probably why, at least I think so

Cause I don’t know if I can be alone again.” At the end of Blinding lights. He comes back to her. That’s way it’s so genius. He made a song about him being in the after life sound like a love song. The whole After Hours album is a story about a toxic relationship. Blinding Lights is the song that follows the main character as he's on his way to the hospital after an overdose. So yeah it might refer to dru6s but also to the heavy lights in the ambulance.
I think he says in an interview that Blinding Lights is about being away from someone, who he his longing to be with. So drives there while being drunk and he his 'blinded' by the street lights. Although your theory is also plausible.
And it seems to be an homage to Lost in Vegas. I don't understand his hate for Blinding Lights, its a great song, honestly it took what made the 80s good and polished it up with sound production, adding some of that cyberwave into it. Its a great 80 throwback fit for the modern era song.

IMO, What You Need is almost even with Blinding Lights in terms of quality. Blinding Lights definitely has the better lyrics and story, especially in the context of the entire album, but it feels very generic as a song. What You Need definitely has the better vibe imo.
