      I disagree. I do not think Gael is as sophisticated as people assume. I think he misunderstood, that while Laver is relaxed, meaning Team members can be supportive, it does not mean when on court you do not have to comport yourself in a serious manner. As Felix told him, this is NOT an exhibtion match. Why would who talk to Felix tell him different than they told every other participant. This is about what Gael heard, not what was said?.

      Ok, so if understand correctly, was it that Monfils gave the impression he wasn't trying hard, or just clowning all around?? I did see Monfils try one of those trick serves, which I thought was kind of odd. But I didn't see the match, it was something he did while I happened to surf the channel. But I wouldn't be surprised, Monfils problem is that he often doesn't take matches seriously enough for him to care much about its outcome. But still, it's like he should know that even though it's not a ATP tournament, one is still expected to treat it as a competition.

    This is what you get when an event is not clear on what it wants to be. The absence of the top 10 players from Europe shows that the prestige factor is low. Outside of those players, line ups where leaning towards more ‘entertainment’ also in early editions (Sock being there). Monfils recognizes that if prestige was the main thing he would not be invited.
    Even the umpire was not clear on whether he should rule in a competitive or entertainment manner.

Also, the advice he was giving FAA in the end is actually mature in my opinion: don’t focus on Monfils and focus on yourself essentially.
    I get that Shelton is acting more cocky for an upstart but damn, he’s young and grooving, cut him some slack and let him be him. We’ll see in the coming years how he matures or doesn’t, both tennis and personality - judge him then.

    I worry about the future of the Laver cup. It was basically a money making enterprise for Roger Federer, with a confused format that has been underlined with this situation - it seems more like team tennis in the 70s than the regular tour. The line up this year has also been very second rate.

    • @SJ-di5zu
      @SJ-di5zu Před 7 měsíci +3

      Yeah the big 3 did a lot of work to endorse the Laver Cup. In 2017 it was Federer and Nadal insisting that everyone take it seriously and all, and top players showed up for the opportunity to play on their team. Also Jack Sock and Nick Kyrgios’s impact cannot be understated; they took this competition extremely seriously and helped set the tone while dominating doubles matches. 2017-2019 was peak Laver Cup.
      Now with Federer retired, Nadal and Djokovic getting older and less likely to play this, people just have less of a reason to play. We probably won’t see Alcaraz any time soon unless Federer begs him to come. It’s after the US Open where every top player is exhausted.
      It’s a great format, but I think Federer needs to put in effort if he wants to keep the reputation alive. Call up guys like Alcaraz, Kyrgios, Medvedev, and the coaches will do the rest with keeping them serious and on-task. Make sure the culture doesn’t shift. Maybe have retired players show up; big 4 can be near the players or offer coaching, Sock could jump on for doubles.

      Totally disagree. The format was not confused. Monfils was not a good ad on… he showboats and presumed once asked to participate that is why he was asked. These were first rate players. This has been a rough year for tennis players everbody has been injured. The line up will always depend on whos health and wants to play. Could care less if Roger is making money with Tennis. Black Players are not second rate… nor are players in top 20 players. Don’t know who Felix hasnt beaten at least once. These guys are all good players.
