Please don't forget these players didn't play at the same time... Monfils played while Federer, Rafa, Djokovic, Murray, Wawrinka, Berdych, Ferrer, Cilic, Del Potro, Tsonga were all at their highest level (and I could give other names as the level was so high for more than a decade)... And he managed to stay several years in the top ten... Players like Ruud or Fritz wouldn't even play top 20... So I don't really understand how people can criticize Monfils level or the way he played his whole carreer from what they see on nowadays' matches

Exactly, those were different times, player from top 20 could beat someone from top 5, if you were in top 10 consistently, you were on another level.

Monfils has always been a very good ATP player (often top 10)... I agree however, with Jim Courrier that Gael built his career on defense and hence, never was able to learn when to attack, when to defend - he remained a defensive player. His physical advantages were/are obvious, but as Jim said, 'No great player built greatness on defense alone'...I think the FTT and their coaching perspective needs some revamping.

Right. I don’t get it, he is the guy who can produce some of the biggest and fastest forhand winners on the tour, sometimes he fires a 120+ mph bomb out of nowhere. But usually he just prefers to play very safe and gets into a defensive position when he should have an upper hand in the rally. It’s like he never learned to play with controlled aggresion. It’s a shame because he could have won much more in his career.

I partially disagree, Monfils was also a great attacker during 2016 and 2019 season.
But yeah overall, was more a pusher with genius touch and exceptional athleticism

He has smoked Federer few times, when he plays aggressive he can take down most tennis players.
I think Jim is right, he doesn't know when to attack and when to defend.

With the weapons Monfils has, he should have won more. He played a Monte Carlo final against Nadal - think he lost the third set 6/0 but played some great stuff as he did in other patches during his career. Perhaps if he was a little bit less entertainer and a little bit more serious but certain players are just wired differently I guess.

It's because he got injured so many times when he played like that he said that he prefer to preserve himself and stay longer on atp pro tour instead of finishing like Del Potro. He was all the time out of the court because of body problems. Smart Guy but désappointement

I wonder about the future of the Laver Cup. It was basically a vehicle for Roger Federer, and to some extent Nadal and a lesser extent Djokovic. None of them are here, and neither is the likes of Alcaraz, and it's looking pretty second rate.

It gives you a different impression from TV but the experience is tylored for people who watch at the venue.
This is about bringing a lot of exciting tennis players under one roof and putting a show for the people.

@@brodaism it's all about money in the end, let's be honest - like so much of sport, sadly. But the entertainment angle didn't really work though this time did it? Team Europe in particular had some bizarre players. Very much a "B" competition

I think he just didnt expect the laver cup to be taken that seriously. On one hand, I really dont blame him because it's basically an exhibition, but on the other hand the matches count in head to head records so I understand FAA too... the whole event is just confusing tbh
