    Although local people couldn't speak in English, but main transport, streets name are also written in English as well, that's why if you travelling in most Far East counties without worrying get lost in directions. if you travelling in USA and Europe countries, then you will get difficulty and if you can't understand their language, because everythings are written in their own language or single language.

    it reminds me of another experience. I was in Yichang ( to board the cruise), I took the bus but was short 20 cents RMB, the bus driver simply accepted what I put into the cash box, I was very appreciative of that. Just before I got off the bus, I thank him for his kindness.

    that area is one of least developed chinese provinces because those provinces are located in the middle never ending mountains. using the word "poorest" is not exaggeration, i meant GDP per capita.

    • @TheXanian
      @TheXanian Před 5 lety +9

      I certainly don't deny that Yunnan is still quite poor compared to the coastal provinces, as Yunnan's GDP per capita is only around 5,600 USD in 2018, compared to Beijing and Shanghai which are nearly 20,000 USD. But you should also admit that China has made a lot of progress over the past several decades. In the 1980's China's average GDP per capita is only about one or two hundred USD, and now we're at 9,800.

    • @MsFancia
      @MsFancia Před 5 lety +8

      There's a professor that's interviewed about poor people in China; she said it's easy to measure poor people from GDP but sometimes we have to take into account that even though their GDP is smaller but they're happy with what they have, a roof over their head, clothes to wear and food 3 times a day; they're satisfied with that. When we (Government official and professors) went there and told them 'Do you know that you're poor?' They're kind of baffled.

    All the subway trains and high speed rail stops as well as train announcements are in English, Mandarin and possibly the provincial language (eg, in places like Xinjiang - Arabic/Uyghur, Guangdong - Cantonese, Inner Mongolia - Mongolian, Tibet -tibetan...etc) They are aware foreign tourists do not know how to read them.

      In Kunming, when I couldn’t get a Western Union at one bank, the staff called around and then walked me up the road to another bank where I could get it! There’s no way you’d get such service or kindness in the UK. At the time I couldn’t read or speak any Chinese, but many people tried to help me when I wanted to get a bus. Someone spotted that I needed help and asked around the others at the bus stop to see if anyone could speak English and help me. A young woman with her mum led me to the ticket office and explained everything for me, and then they invited me to tea! If the roles were reversed and a Chinese person came to the UK, needing help with the bus, not speaking any English, I’m afraid that most people would just ignore them or worse. I would love to visit Yunnan again. The culture and nature is great too.

    It would be good just to use apple map, it works everywhere, apple works with local navigating service companies who provide accurate information to apple, so apple maps its the one you want to use in China for Forgriners who doesn't speak Chinese. If you do read and speak Chinese, you can use Gaode or Baidu apps, they work even better.
