"Safety Glock" is my new favorite thing now
I was literally thinking of "safety Glock with a tac light" the other day when I had to use an IRL flashlight for something
End of the WeeWoo box :(
@@tomboi941 WeeWoo box will always be remembered....
I almost shit my pants because my Glock airsoft is chilling on my chest
We need safety glock merch
Man, the Source engine is so good for horror but so many horror maps are just JPEG jumpscare filled trash, it's refreshing to see something that doesn't rely on that.
jeffthekiller.jpg xD
I love it when u scare yourself,
"What if some.. huge.. long legged creature starts running out of the darkness into the vision of my flashlight at mock 3.... Thanks myself now I'm scared"
The giraffes are out for blood!
For convenience’s sake, I feel like you should just use the ‘taclight’ on the pistol or something similar in future videos whenever such a thing can be used again, just to minimize fumbling with menus, and frankly, I think it’s perfectly sensible to have some kind of ‘protection’ when exploring abandoned spaces, because it’s only abandoned to *your* knowledge, haha.
Yeah he does kinda stick the whole "light vs defense" Doom 3 shit a little too much.
@@genericwhitekidthesecond4330
Doom 3's "light vs defense" worked very well. It was a cool gameplay mechanic.
The main problem with that idea in VR is actually swapping between light and defense. If he could have a specialized bind to swap to the flashlight swap then I think the concept would work a lot better
@@Valkyries733 Well in the context of VR in theory one hand would hold the flashlight the other holds the firearm. In a real life scenario duct tape and zip-ties exist so if really had to you could use those.
(Not necessarily on a pistol though)
@@CRACKBONE7317 Then how does it work?
@@Muster_Muckee_II "(Not necessarily on a pistol though)"
Even the big ol' classic 2-3 D Cell Maglites can be used with a pistol at the same time. It's unwieldy and leaves you with basically no recoil control on the handgun due to shooting it one handed, but at the same time, for a long while, one handed pistol shooting was the norm. Two hands will always be better, but if all you have is a Maglite and a gun, it's better then nothing.
The smaller, more modern lights all have techniques developed around two handed shooting. The one handed pistol shooting with a light is nothing more than a holdover from the '90s when the brightest light they had was 50 lumens and required twenty D cells to run.
But yeah. Weapon mounted lights are now the preferred method of gunfighting in low/no light conditions since it gives you the most control over your pistol while shooting.
I remember this map from around when I started gmod. I never knew it was a horror map, and I didn't even go deep enough to get any spooks, I always just stayed on the surface and messed around with vehicles and npcs.
it's super creepy to think that whole time there was a massive underground complex filled with god knows what just below me.
@@CaptainTak this is why I always looked up info about maps lol dont want to get jumpscared without knowing its a horror map
I mean considering its just an empty map with nothing in it and absolutely basic nothing about it is scary or spooky and jumpscares are pretty cheap. Especially in Half Life, all we see here is your generic walking simulator.
@@PuellaMagiHomuraAkemi I don't really get your point, I mean I guess it's a walking simulator, in the sense you walk around an intensely atmospheric and completely pitch black sprawling tunnel system, which gradually gets more and more illogical and mysterious as you explore. I wouldn't really call the handful of times something knocked on the other end of a door jumpscares, I think it's just a great way of enforcing this creeping uncertainty that something or someone is down there with you, and doesn't want you to see it.
In the house it's in full effect, exploring through the dark attic as things just outside your vision shift and get knocked over, footsteps on the floor above or doors closing just as you enter the room, I think it was very effective in inflicting a sense of terror.
The only thing that comes to mind I would call a jumpscare is the loud scream when you are in the locker it was kinda cheap but I feel like it served it's purpose, the way Librarian jumps back upon hearing it into the newly opened tunnel works so well, and I feel like that's why its the most egregious thing in the whole map, it serves its purpose and I think is fully justified based on how well it ends up working.
edit: some punctuation and linebreaks
@@CaptainTak
Since when is an empty Half Life map an "intensely atmospheric and completely pitch black sprawling tunnel system"
What kind of "creeping uncertainty" is there in an empty map with nothing in it?
It neither has atmosphere or anything else than some darkness and generic sounds.
Did you ever actually played any game with atmosphere that aren't just cheap walking simulators like this? Did you played Stalker, FEAR, Underhell or similar?
To create a horror game you need game mechanics that work with each other, otherwise you have a hollow in that people just interpretate like the typical streamers who overreact at Scary.mp3 and it just ends being a walking simulator instead of an actual horror game.
so glad i found this channel from the Ashville episode. something about exploring this type of game makes me give 100% of my attention

For a "safety Glock" with a flashlight,i'd suggest a gun mod that allows you to add attachments to the gun, like CW 2.0 or ArcCW.
Don't think it supports VRmod
Or tfa
@@berryfox710 yea,but doesn't have as much customization as ArcCW. Plus,ArcCW remembers attachments,TFA doesn't.
@@TheRealVGR true but in my opinion tfa has better gunplay
No worries, each one with their preferences.
I've played this map before with a friend and never really found it scary or even eerie..Until VR, it adds a whole new level of horror. Source games in general feels really creepy in VR regardless if its horror or not imo.
But if it has nothing in it, its just a walking simulator and those aren't scary.
@@PuellaMagiHomuraAkemi man you are just a walking record..must be fun at parties espically Halloween parties to suck out anything people think is scary
Nice Alan Wake character model.
I'd recognize those sleeves anywhere.
I always enjoy watching people play gmod horror maps, but with you using VR, and doing it slowly puts it on whole different level. Your gameplays feel kinda like a found footage horror. Keep up the good work.
But how is this horror? its just an empty map, people truly have low expectations...
If you want horror play Underhell or Cry of Fear or Fear but empty maps aka walking simulators aren't scary.
@@PuellaMagiHomuraAkemi except these aren’t walking simulators. These are just maps people made that can be used by anyone for any reason. Thus the horror comes more from that creepy feeling you get when your alone even at a place you can be familiar with which isn’t the same as…well survival horror like Cry of Fear or FEAR (which btw with the latter more nervous/scared when it was just the sections you were alone…Alma being there or not)
@@killerzombie2171
Tell me please what else you do than walking on an empty map. What kinda creepy feeling is there if there's nothing in it. Nothing to overcome, nothing to do, nothing to fear or run away from and certainly no mechanics.
I surely wouldn't come up with cheap stuff at a party like that, you can be sure about that.
@@PuellaMagiHomuraAkemi Because, as he stated at the beginning, he doesn't know if the maps have anything in them horror related or not. He just wants to feel uneasy at least, and if it turns out to be a horror map, all the better. I'm sorry this isn't action packed enough for you.
@@PuellaMagiHomuraAkemi How can you be truly scared when you know someone is trying to spook you? Jumpscares are predictable, horror stories are predictable. True unpredictable fear comes from what seems like an empty map, not knowing what could possibly happen.
10:00 To add even more creepiness to this sentiment, the reason knowing it's only darkness behind you scares you so much, even with a flashlight, is because deep down you understand that if something knows you can't see it, it knows it can attack.

This map would have been perfect to see you make your way out, it would be very therapeutic to watch the horror dissolve with your exit back to the sweet certainty of the outside world
I've just recently started watching and now I want a VR headset to experience this level of emersion!
Great video keep it up!
If you can safely afford one I'd highly recommend one.
Things you wouldn't think are that scary are much more unnerving when you're actually there.
If you want a cheap but good headset, Go for a Quest 2 with a link cord.
But I highly, highly recommend saving up for the best headset on the market by Valve.
Yeah Quest 2 is great if you're a broke college student like me. It's not very expensive but it's actually a pretty decent headset.
VR is a wonderful technology, definitely invest in it if it interests you, and hey, if you want a new addiction then hop in VRChat in your off time.
@@Taggynn the people on vrchat are way more horrifying than any horror experience for sure.
Thank you for such content. No one has ever so thoroughly checked the maps publicly on garrys mod in VR. I myself like to walk on different maps and I advise everyone to buy at least quest 2 to appreciate it. It's much more affordable now than it used to be.
Thank you for reminding me that Markiplier played this map almost 8-9 years ago with Yamimash. Fun to experience the memories and see this map again.

Probably the best horror map you've played in VR so far. No cheap jumpscares because "that's what horror's about", great atmosphere, soundscape, everything.
Cheap jumpscares being popular on youtube are the sole reason that very few actualy scary movies or games come out now, amnesia is still the scariest game ive played and its from 2013
@@scrithen2836 cheap jumpscares are the most low effort, smoothbrained bullshit way to elicit emotional reactions from people.
True fear is slow, methodical, *inevitable.* Ooga booga screamers, flashbangs, etc are lazy, but are popular with younger generations especially for entirely understandable reasons.
You can get the same effect from good immersive environment design, a soundscape, pacing, everything this map shows off. The best horror experiences are the ones that turn your own mind against you.
Really unpredictable and atmospheric. Easily my favorite map so far. Well maybe excluding the bone brigade because that was just straight up goofy
11:50 Man you got that phantom sense stuff. Shit is wild when flames is going off or you're in a winter map with your irl fans breezing cold air at you.
Phantom Sense is fun but it can get abused easily lol
A very weird and different suggestion, but...
One of my favorite "creepy and comfy" locations I've ever explored in a game has to be "Yngol's Barrow" in Skyrim. I don't want to spoil what's in there, but something about this dungeon just had the perfect combination of creepy and comfy - I always go there on a new playthrough, ESPECIALLY if I am testing new graphical enhancement mods, as I think it's got a very beautiful and relaxing aesthetic - the ice caverns shifting into anciet overgrown tombs. In certain parts of the dungeon, it feels as if I'm walking through a garden, not an ancient burial mound.
And yet, there are a few other things about the dungeon that have this... Not scary, not entirely creepy, but almost... Unnaturally somber? Feeling.
It's one of those locations in games where I went online afterwards to look for answers about it, and yet I could find none. I mean, there's a bunch of lore there, and Yngol, the main guy who is buried there, definitely has some history. But the rest of the halls in the Barrow are... Very mysterious. And so is your myserious friends which I won't talk about, who accompany you through the crypt, silently, and clearly without a malicious intent.
If there weren't one or two traps in the entire place, I'd say that the crypt is one of the safest places in the game. And it feels that way, while still retaining another feeling, it's mysterious and possibly sinister nature.
I guess I should play Skyrim when I get the chance since this place sounds awesome :D Hey if you ever get to play Fallout 3 there's a similiarly creepy/comfy building with some spooky stuff B)
ohhhh this map...., this map freaks me out on PC, i cant imagine playing it in VR....
just a sidenote, i never got too far, too weary to explore much more then the main corridors and that house, so, the 38:50 gave me full body goosebumps

I’m really loving these Gmod VR videos. I find them relaxing yet intriguing to watch
They are my favourite videos of his to watch
I love these vids. Especially when it’s haunted
I remember a very old "Let's Play" from a small german youtuber I used to follow when I was like literally twelve and he played this map. The goddamn memories are coming back. Thank you for this!
crawling through partially submerged tunnels sets off both my thalassophobia _and_ claustrophobia. great!
Hey Librarian, really enjoy watching your videos @work, also started playing gmod in VR because of you channel. I found a good tip is to enable (Replace door use mechanics) in the VRMOD settings menu really help with the issue I see you are having with the doors. When you press use your character will physically reach for the door handle when near it.
Also (Replace climbing mechanics) is really immersive. You can climb stairs just like in HLA. At the end of course you gotta like teleport to the destination but it's really cool nonetheless
Please please play the SCP staircase game! With a face cam of course. I remember playing a version of that’s year ago before SCP went off the rails. Absolutely a core memory of my childhood horror experiences
Something that adds to the horror for me, I'm not sure you'd call it a phobia specifically, but just another thought you have to scare yourself with in these maps:
I become ACUTELY AWARE that my flashlight is flagging my arrival to whatever the hell I imagine is hiding in every dark corner and crevice that's not there when I finally get to illuminate it.
Just the fact that whatever horrible thing has the advantage well in advance of knowing you're coming.
And that, officer, is why I was exploring this abandoned metro tunnel kitted out with an AR-15, 180 rounds of .300 Black Out, a suppressor, and gen 3 NODS... I spent all my money on that and am now homeless.
I've never felt this way when playing a horror game, but in other games, like EFT, I've felt that way, since others will know where you are of you use a flashlight
I remember when Markiplier, wade, bob, and yamimash played this.
Back when Markiplier was funny and didn’t scream for no reason.
Okay.
I think it's been years since I last heard of Yamimash
He got cancelled.
Don't remember why.
@@NaeveSnowsTavern he did some... Bad stuff with minors

This reminds me of the horror movie - The Tunnel. It’s about a film crew that learns of a government cover-up of an abandoned train station tunnel beneath the heart of Sydney, and decides to go inside to try to find the truth. Very quickly the group begins to realise they are not alone, something is following them whilst they travel the never ending tunnels and mazes hidden underneath the city. Really scary and gives similar vibes!
I love the way you commentate in these horror games/videos. Keep up the great work!
To fix the flashlight bug, you just need to unequip the flashlight and then pick up any small objects you can hold with your hands.
I love listening to you explore these maps whilst I make one myself for a horror competition.
No spoilers, but lets just say you have a very good reason to be afraid of 1:52 in my map.
These videos are honestly very good pieces to study. I bet watching these would help anyone trying to make a VR horror game.
Imagining someone running out of a door like Bugs Bunny, turning around and hastily hammering planks of wood to the door is hilarious. Not sure how someone could realistically do that

Your stuff is incredible as always, love the immersion, love the commentary.
Hey, you know, you could install a gun mod which allows you to add attachments to the gun, in which it lets you add a light to the gun, that could solve the problem of maps that are filled with enemies but also dark and it could also make the gun use more immersive as the light actually has a place it's coming from.

The flashlight mod has this obnoxious bug where seemingly at random switching from the flashlight to another weapon forces the default light on in a way where it can't be turned off without dying or in some cases even restarting the map.
It's incredibly aggravating sometimes so if you're worried about that breaking the atmosphere as you play I'd suggest either finding a different flashlight mod or using a gun light of some kind.
Aww this is scary lol I love these vids keep up the amazing work

You should try the phystown maps, they're fun to play around in but they have a very strange and unsettling atmosphere coupled with some other secrets
If you want the flashlight and a gun at the same time, some TFA pistols have flashlights you can equip.
I'm at 2:25 and my theory so far is that the kitchen and house are one of those underground town style military compound bomb shelters they could be connected to sewers and metro systems maybe project that was never fully realized just a bunch of structures designed to mimic normal structures to keep people who have to live underground for long periods of time relatively sane.
