and the best part is that the part earlier where you hid from the light ( 15:25 ) already trains you to associate those discordant electronic buzzer/alarm-like noises with DANGER.
So your tension levels skyrocket, and half a second later there's a shadow monster man running at you in a dead sprint out of the darkness.
      Utterly incredible.

Also I got so upset with that final room. I spent something like 15-20 minutes just checking EVERY SINGLE ROOM thinking that there'd be something or an exit, and the only way down there to my knowledge is that one top room. Really soured the experience, glad you found the exit in good time.

    •  Před 2 lety +10

@@Thfoxpz Yeah... that's where Outlast failed at me... too many jump scares, too many places where I didn't really felt the threat but it was there and died again and again and again... Yes, dying is part of the games and I definitely was bad at Outlast. But I couldn't really get immersed. I felt I had to mention that game.
Amnesia is a masterpiece with its setting, sound design, music, simple gameplay mechanics. Physics added a lot to it too.
It was a very easy game. It gave you the clue all the time if you are in danger. But also when you weren't. It gave such false sense of danger many times. It sucked me in so easily. Checked every corners, every places because I wasn't sure if it's safe. When it was obvious something is lurking, it was always dangerous but avoidable. I died twice on my first playthrough of The Dark Descent. Once by a monster, the other time was falling from height. But that's how the game felt right. Starting from beginning to end, not going back because of dying. I might sound like I like easy games. The opposite. But Amnesia was difficult because of overcoming fear. Not because it was easy to die. It felt like a seamless journey. A story unfolding, while trying to survive, solve puzzles, etc...
I wish more horror games chose that way of story telling and gameplay. SOMA was fantastic too. Less scary but damn, so immersive and what an emotional rollercoaster.

    • @Thfoxpz
      @Thfoxpz Před 2 lety +4

@ Well said, I only finished Outlast when I played it because I wanted to see the character finally escape and I was kinda hooked into the whole Walrider Project thing, but we all know the ending, and the documents leave more questions than answers sometimes. In my opinion the DLC did way better in terms of creepiness.
As for SOMA, it felt like Frictional wanted to try to raise moral questions for the players but went way overboard with it. And left the "horror" part just to sell the game to people. I still enjoyed it nonetheless, but for different reasons. Amnesia Rebirth was a way more good example of 50/50'ing a game with half horror, half moral dillemas.

I've been tossing around the idea of horror games employing "ghost" NPCs. Not in-universe ghosts, but rather NPCs that are invisible and intangible, but still make noises the player can hear. Have them walk around near the player making noises, but go silent if they get too close, or the player gets line of sight on them. You could make them use unique sounds, making the player feel like some... *thing* is present, that they never actually see or interact with. And the NPC's random AI would mean they'd never hear it in quite the same position, each playthrough.
Or the NPC could use the same sounds as actual enemies, making the player think an enemy is present, and even nearby, when it isn't. Or even let actual enemies shift in and out of this ghost mode randomly, but never attack while ghosted. So the player is never sure where the enemies actually are, or if they're even a threat right now.
Oh, and maybe let these ghosts interact with physics objects somehow. Nothing special - maybe once or twice every few minutes, they apply a little force to a random object within a radius. Enough to make it topple over, or make a noise. Which would confuse the player even more, when they hear something fall off a table in another room, that they thought for sure was empty.

You may or may not relate to this; none of the spooky stuff in the movie "Jacob's Ladder" got me like that one moment when everything seems alright, like he's woken up from a nightmare and it's all going to be okay... *"Dream on!"* ... The way the sound was mixed, all the sounds of the scene are in front of you, which feels natural watching - but then the voice, barely above a raspy whisper, completely drowns-out all the other sounds - right behind you, in your ear.
    Fuggin' CHILLS mah dood

If you've let your guard down a bit because you're prepared for a PNG screamer fest and then you hear a very realistic whisper in your here it feels super real because it doesn't seem like something the game would do based on what you already know and then when you realize it's completely unpredictable after you had a sense of understanding it that adds another layer of unease

As a person who did many playthroughs of this map, there seem to be a few things you missed
    (spoilers?)
In one of the bathroom stalls you get transported into a narrow hallway with a crouched rebel model leading to another loud jumps are. In one of the rooms with the fuel tank, if you approach the tank, you hear banging from inside, and in the room with the windows to another room, there's a pair of glowing eyes but since you're in front you might have triggered them to disappear early.
As for some explanations for a few things, the wood dragging noise is because of a plank was basically clipped into the ground with physics enabled onto it. Apparently the map is supposed to be an asylum where patients were mistreated. A lot of the ambience/soundtracks were mostly from Amnesia, I think a few from Cry of Fear and Maybe one from SOMA. As for the two entrances to the lower maze, I did some noclipping because why not and found out the room with the locked door in the first maze was just the same as the unlocked one, hole and all. I think I've probably missed some things as well, I'm no dev of the map or anything, just someone who spends too much time on this map and Gmod in general. I wish I was able to make maps for Gmod because I would definitely takes some notes on this.

Though I really like Amnesia's soundtrack, I don't think it worked amazingly well here. It can be a tad overwhelming in several areas of the map, as well as kinda feel like like it doesn't really 'match' the feel the map wants to give. Amnesia's ambience and soundtrack is much more suited for gothic horror, and when you put it up against certain environments in this map, it kinda clashes I guess?
Other than that, the map could've probably been much creepier with little to no ambient sound, just silence.
Though if you haven't listened to Amnesia's OST, I strongly recommend it! A lot of it is very atmospheric and at times even a little cozy, in a strange way.

Watched the first minute or so of this video, then decided to go explore it in VR with my friend. Best decision I've ever made. No horror map made me feel as much fear as this one did. And only ONE jpeg scare. Impressive.

Aside from those few cheap jump scares this was a solidly-made horror map. Kudos to the creator!
I think the part with the man facing the wall would have been more effective if the man instead just de-spawned as the player rounds the corner to get a better look at him, or just keep it as-is except replace the scream with something more subtle, like a whisper or a noise from somewhere else.

hi librarian. i had an idea. next time you go on another irl exploration of abandoned stuff, bring a detailed dummy to leave behind, best place to leave it would probably be facing a corner. that way the next explorers get a laugh. or a fright.
