    Lol... I used to "hire" myself and have been meaning to "re-hire" myself this past year. I also am more focused if I pretend I am cleaning for someone else! I like to keep track of hours and paid myself $2 an hour to put in "fun" account. Btw, I am not a house cleaner just a gal who needs to clean her house. Oh, and I would set hours, dress and walk around the block before and after (my "customer" supplied the cleaning equipment 😉), announce that I was there to clean and when I was leaving. It was actually kind of fun 🙂. Thanks for this video, Angela, and the motivation to get back to this cleaning strategy. PS It also works for getting paperwork done if I "hire" myself as a secretary. I need to rehire myself for that job also!

      Christine, I love this strategy but $2 an hour - girlfriend you need to give yourself a raise. House cleaning (and being a secretary) are tough jobs. LOL. I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the part about walking around the block first - which gets blood and oxygen flow going and sets the body in action mode needed for cleaning. Awesome stuff. Thanks for sharing this. 💛💛💛

    Oh wow! I didn't know that other people have the same problem i do. Getting distracted from your work is so easy, when you have pets, laundry, cooking, so many things going on. I haven't tried this yet, but if you set a timer for each room, it could keep you more focused. I'm not sure where i heard this from but it could keep you motivated to beat the clock. Thanks Angela for the video.

    Angela, I wonder if you realize how inspiring you are for those of us in various situations. I am unable to work due to covid and have a small child and a dog and am often overwhelmed by the mess, since we are here 24x7. While you'd think that would give me more time to clean, it really just gives me more time to make a mess. I cannot afford a housecleaner, nor would I want anyone else in my house during covid. However, one thing which really inspires me is watching your videos, right before I clean, especially your gratitude video. I would encourage others to pick several of your videos to watch, right before cleaning, then just get up and do it. Our floors seem to be one of the biggest problem but once they are picked up and clean, it just transforms the room. Thanks for helping all of us, not just housecleaners.

    This was my question! And you're so right, I spend a lot of time thinking about how to get the MOST stuff done at once because doing all of my chores at the same time is the most efficient. Except it's not efficient at all because the more things I try to fit into the "cleaning" category, the more overwhelming it is because I'm doing a lot of work but none of the tasks are getting completely finished. I'm going to make a list of exactly what counts as "cleaning" in every room, and only allow myself to do the things on the list during cleaning time instead of trying to do 10 other chores at the same time. Thank you so much for answering my question!

    I'm not a house cleaner, but I have felt the same thing helping people pack for moving. I've helped several friends pack boxes in advance of their moves. They putter, while I just pack like a robot. I understand why they putter when they're moving -- I do the same thing. But if I'm not moving, having to say goodbye to a house, a life, I can just wrap items nicely and stack full boxes on the truck. They're always amazed how much I get done, but I never flip through their books and think, "Oh yeah, what a great class that was...how's the classmate doing this decade...?"

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  Před rokem +1

      It's interesting how people have different approaches when it comes to packing for a move. Your efficient and focused style impresses your friends, while you prioritize getting the job done. Your friends are fortunate to have someone like you who can provide practical support during this transitional period. And it's great to hear how you've been able to help them and others. Thank you for sharing your experience!

    Your housecleaning scheduling reminds me the day before to make sure the beds are made, the dishes are done, the clutter is picked up, and the laundry is in the laundry room because "the maid is coming". Hope this makes sense.

I get derailed when I come across (almost immediately) piles of things that need dealing with…a box of stuff, something that needs fixing…I try to keep cleaning….vacuum all around them etc…..but usually I get immobilized and then derailed by shame. I feel ashamed just typing that.

I'm not a professional cleaner though. Just someone with depression that just can't get motivated to clean. Your new tape is starting to help a tiny bit. I actually threw away some of my trash one day. I got a long ways to go to get my house clean though. I'll keep listening to your new tape.

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  Před 2 lety +6

      Oddly enough everything we own in our home links back to our emotions. We buy things because we think they make us look cool, make us comfortable, will give us added convenience, will improve our quality of life, raise our social status, or something like that. The reasons we keep things are for all the same reasons - but when those reasons fade we have the added emotions of "I paid too much money for this to toss it, it meant something to my friend/relative, I'm going to use it one day..." And cleaning (lifting stuff up to wipe it down and dust under it) dredges up all those emotions. PLUS, the added emotions of guilt because we haven't used the item in a while.
      When we cleaning someone eles'e home - we don't carry any of those emotions with us to the job. We clean and go home. So if you are cleaning your own home with the same detachment - you can get more done much faster. Does that make sense?

The most helpful part of putting myself on the schedule was learning to respect and value my own cleaning spot as I would that of a client. And it gave me the wiggle room of one cancellation per week. If I had a customer cancel on me during the week - I knew I easily reschedule them to my time slot and I'd take theirs.

      @@AskAngelaBrown Just a fun trip to get away from it all for a bit since I love to travel.
      Was a traveling nurse for 9 years so gonna visit friends in the Bay area and a dear gunsmith friend in Vegas. I hear it's another world out West since "the change." Wanna see it for myself.
      And I also have a LOT of relatives with a high concentration in San Antonio, the Texas "Valley," and Houston. Hubby and I raised the kids in the Heart of the Texas Hill Country and now he and I reside in Bandera on a little homestead where I raise chickens and help my son with his second business, a Hill Country cleaning service that is thriving so I've been consuming all your vids to help us through some growing sprees.
      He's got a few nice commercial cleaning contracts and has been offering "covid foggings" that are bringing in the $. As soon as I get back I'll use my credentials to market those foggings to nursing homes and other facilities and see what cleaning needs they may have.
      I consume lots of economic information while I work on my homestead and the way I see things, if the economy doesn't turn around, residential cleanings will be more of a luxury, like going out to eat. So I think I'll focus my marketing energy to commercial cleaning. We just landed a contract and I did what you suggested on a vid of yours and asked a lot of questions. Found out she had to fire the previous cleaning service because of lack of responsiveness. It was difficult to even find the previous service rep to pay them. So I think good communication, dependability, and response time will be critical to dominating this market.
      So glad I found you as I have a clear plan to grow the biz just as soon as I get back. Thanks for the personal acknowledgement.

The other day I went to empty the indoor recycling bin in the outside recycling bin, while out there I noticed the dead dry stalks of the peonie and new shoots coming up from the plant (Note: not a gardener! My other half does that) so after dumping the recycling I got to work on cutting away all the dead stalks with kitchen scissors because I have know idea where the cutter things are. I casually mentioned that I'd done some gardening to my other half as we did dinner he looked at me like is just landed from Mars.

      The cool thing about ADHD is the rabbit trails that can spin you in one direction or the next. The key to making it work is to make a list of "Rabbit hole activities." So if you find yourself near the peonies, you've already laid the scissors out so you can execute the task with expediency and move on to the next task you've planned after that." I love your story. Thanks for sharing. 😍

    I just canceled my house cleaner who I never felt did a good job… Only had them for a few months. I have significant back issues and that is mostly why I have had cleaning people in recent years. Anyway, please please, can you recommend a telescoping cleaning brush that could be used inside of a bathtub that would not harm the surface… sort of like a mop but one that could be used to scrub the sides and bottom of a bathtub and a shower as well. Everything I seem to have been able to find has an odd shape or exposed edges. I am still looking for a cleaning service and hope to find one. Thank you for all your ideas. I enjoy watching your videos and learning.

    You hit the nail on the head - it resonates for your own home whether you clean for a living or not. I've been catching up on your videos and worked my way up to tackling more than one room in a day. Now not every detail works for me, I have an aversion to microfiber towels and I find a Swiller barely does one room never mind a whole house.... Still, I've picked up tips and even bought the microfiber drying cloths you used as I wanted to try your method on my huge mirrors (found that if there's no loopy surface, it doesn't feel so icky.). I think it takes me about as long to clean a room as it takes you to clean a house, but I managed three rooms in a day. The trick for me was to time myself - not because its a race, but because I won't indulge in distractions if I'm finding out how long it takes me to do something. Next time I'll see if I can beat my time ;o).

    This sounds a very good idea for cleaning. My problem is I am untidy, worse at the moment as I am in pain with a bad back. What approach do you take with messy things cluttering a room you are paid to clean? Do. you just straighten them and neatly pile for the owner to sort? Being basically disabled I cannot face getting a cleaner in with my mess as I am embarrased. I am dealing with piles of paper at the moment one by one but it is all very daunting. I actually like cleaning and am good at it, particularly with all your tips. I just cannot get to it for the mess! Help, anyone!!

    What a brilliant idea! I have always treated my house as a test house. By that I mean whatever technique I wanted to do in a customer's house I trialled it in my own first. I had everything down to a science and I knew exactly how much time things would take. But honestly, I have never done the whole house like I would do a customer's I'm going to have to try that. I have two obstacles in my way... one is named Holly, and one is named Al!🐶🐶

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  Před 2 lety +4

      LOL. Not sure if Holly and Al are the pets or your family - but it works the same way as a client. We give them a heads up and say "I'm headed in there in 10 minutes, get your stuff and clear out" (but in more diplomatic terms, of course) and we hold fast to the 60 second chit-chat rule. "If you talk to me longer than 60 seconds you're part of the job and I'm going to expect you to help clean." It's amazing how quickly family and pets get the hint. NOTE: In my house I clean in my work uniform. And when I'm in my uniform that means I'm working - don't interrupt. When I've had my shower and I'm in a crazy t-shirt and my hair is down, I'm just me again, come hang out. :-)

    I CANNOT find a decent cleaner in Kalamazoo MI. Cannot. Cannot. I’ve been looking for years, and have found only people who know how to push dirt around, or young folks hired by organizations that just extort their labor for pennies and they HATE their jobs.
    I’d pay decent money, fifteen to 20 an hour, for a decent CLEANER. WHERE ARE YOU??!?!

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  Před 2 lety +6

      Hi Dorothy, it is tough to find good cleaners because the really good ones are booked solid and not available. Even I'm having a tough time right now - I get 30-40 people a day asking me for referrals from cleaners who have been through my Savvy Cleaner Training and certification program and it's like crickets. Nobody has any openings right now and their waitlists are a mile long.

    • @leneeanderson4848
      @leneeanderson4848 Před 2 lety +7

      If you only plan to pay 15 or 20 per hour, you're not going to find anybody. You don't set the rate. The market sets the rate. Want someone good? Accept that you're going to pay in excess of 50 to 100 an hour.
      This is a small business. If you pay $20/hr gross, after the business owner pay only taxes at a 30%, the net per hour is $14. Now, if the only other thing the business owner does is save 15% of the $20 for retirement, the net per hour after taxes and retirement is $11. Now she has to pay food, clothing, shelter, transportation and utilities with that.
      Businesses must be profitable in order to survive and be successful. I would suggest resigning yourself to paying more to get better value.

In other words, the clutter must be put away first, then clean. It's just not as simple as walking into your house and treating it like it was a clients home. You’re right sometimes it takes just as long to move stuff as it does to clean. Adopting the “One Touch” method may help. When you have something in your hand, put it away right then and there. For example, when done showering instead of dropping the towel on the floor (with plans to come back later to hang up) just hang it up. I hope this helps. 😊

    Hi sweet Angela! Happy Wednesday!
    My question is this, lately I have only been able to clean when I’m angry. My husband and I both seem to do this. When we bicker or get upset, we both start grabbing stuff to clean and get it done. We rarely argue- so this is becoming a problem ironically 😂
    Why does it have to be this way? Why does that emotion have to be the driving force lately? When we’re happy, we go baby shopping (bringing more crap into the house and not taking things out is piling up!), or we go spend money when we could spend that on a cleaning service even to help get started. Why is this? Why can’t we clean when we’re happy? Is it because we don’t enjoy it right now? I used to love to clean and take pride in every nook and cranny of my home. Now I can only seem to focus on things that do not matter (like being on CZcams right now) and things that do matter like my first baby- my son who’s going to be born any day now. People talk about nesting... I haven’t got there yet! I’m on week 38 nearly... what is wrong with me? Thank you! ♥️♥️♥️ PS- my house isn’t a total disaster or gross, just chaotic, nothing has a home for itself, clothes are piling up and then I just purchase new clothes instead of washing the old ones at times, my sink is clean but we’ve been eating take out more with me being pregnant (so not feeling healthy physically right now either). I need to clean and deep clean everything. Is it the feeling of being overwhelmed and not knowing where to start? Therefor I just don’t start at all? I wish I knew the key to fix this instantly.
