Support groups done incorrectly can easily end up becoming groups that actually feed eachother's disorders, which is why there should preferably always be a trained professional involved if at all possible to make sure that doesn't happen (I've especially heard some horror stories about eating disorder "support groups" that have basically turned into pro-ana groups that basically just trade tips on how to hide you're not eating)
Yeah, reminds me of a lot of NA meetings that are basically just places to find better drug connections.

Actually got a list of meetings to avoid because they were known for having dealers frequent them back in the day before I realised that NA was doing more harm than good for me (the whole "I'm powerless" thing really didn't work for me, I believe that I'm the only one that can make the decision to not use and stay sober, I just need to be disciplined and deal with my underlying issues that led to me using like depression, anxiety, childhood trauma, etc. But that's me, for some NA works, but there are far better and more evidence based programs and treatment forms available nowadays)
Yeah unfortunately the ED community was in absolute shambles last I checked, tried joining a group that an old online buddy was involved in helping create and literally everyone quit because the group got raided constantly and there were always people joining to try to ruin people's lives for the hell of it. Pretty sure multiple people relapsed on everything because it was just too stressful trying to hold things together and it was just... Honestly better that group died then ended up like every other group that was checked because that was gasoline on a dumpster fire from what I was told. Having any professionals on board might've helped ngl, but I hope it wouldn't instead convince them to quit their job
That may explain why allegedly 13/18 people in that group committed scd. That's a worse quota than of this horrible online forum I've recently heard about, where some psychopaths encourage struggling teenagers to commit scd, promises them fame/glory and help them find the "best" scd method within their available means
I was in a support group where the "professional" let an abusive person vent about how his Ex did not deserve healing or joy. He was fighting for custody of a child they had together and the professional backed him up. You have the right to walk away if this happens in any group. It's your health.

I had three 8th-grade boys last year who were all about NFTs and crypto while my 5th- and 6th-grade students this year don't have any real thoughts about any of it. It's the wildest thing.

27:00 as a member of the ADHD community I would like to say that Halloween is one of my favorite times of year, and I absolutely love costumes. They can be difficult with sensory issues (don't know if those are ADHD related or something else), but it's one of the few times that it's completely socially acceptable for me to go crazy with my hyperfixations and dress up as characters (also I can be weirdly happy about crows and no one questions it). It can be stressful for some individuals, but I feel like saying it's hard for the whole community is a bit of a stretch 🤷
Really saying anything is stressful for the whole community is usually an exaggeration or at least a bit of a stretch, because everyone experiences their neurodivergence differently. Plenty of symptoms apply to some people but not others. There are things that impact most of the community, but it's rare that something negatively impacts all of the community.

I don't have ADHD, I have ASD and Halloween is the only holiday I celebrate because it's great, though cheap wigs are horrible for sensory issues and so are stiffer clothes used in some premade costumes, which is why I suggest making your own if you can. No problems with the costume material if you get to pick it out yourself and it can be pretty fun to do as well if anyone can learn the skills needed and wanted an excuse to work on a project for next year ^^
Also yeah, trying to put a spectrum disorder into a box is awfully ignorant, like I don't even understand half of the ASD community because I don't struggle with everything the majory I've spoken to seem to, but I'm also not that far on the spectrum either so ofc I probably struggle less overall, some people think I'm completely normal but part of that is practice looking normal to be less socially awkward in front of people

Not so much these days though, I don't feel comfortable in a costume anymore, but that's probably more because my costumes are lazy and half-assed and barely pass as costumes, rather than because of my ADHD.
Last time I had an actually good costume - an Elvis costume - it was a lot of fun to go into character and do my best Elvis impression whenever someone asked for it.
Putting on an act for a crappy costume though is super awkward, as people won't recognize what (kind of) character you're dressed up as and they might not realize that you are indeed acting out a character. Meanwhile, not putting on a character kinda defeats the purpose of wearing a costume in the first place. So what do you do but feel out of place among all your friend who put some actual effort into their costumes?
As a nonbinary person, it absolutely doesn’t cancel out my whiteness. It’s a separate thing that I happen to be at risk of being kicked in the teeth by society about, like how I’m low income and am disabled. I’m lucky because I can live with relatives or I would be literally unable to keep myself housed.

the answer to the ADHD Halloween costume thing is that ADHD affects different people in different ways so there's no one right answer, it just depends on the person and how ADHD affects them and their stress levels specifically
In my personal ADHD opinion, I think more tasks are the hard part. Although if you want to participate in an event, there are usually some things you need to do. You could say the same for Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc. but that doesn't mean no one should celebrate it. If the argument that it stresses people with ADHD out, then we should spend the thought working on stressful public education instead of a holiday most people enjoy.

Okay so I wanna jump on to the ablutophobia thing for a sec.
I get anxiety attacks from showering and brushing teeth. (Showers are very loud, and trauma response)
Even still, I do both as regularly as mentally possible, because I am not alone in the world and I have a responsibility to others to not make them disgusted.
Saying someone needs to care for themselves is not ableist, ffs. You need it to survive, even if it's unpleasant
I mean, most therapies for phobias tend to be variants of "go do it anyway, and focus on how nothing happens to you".
If it is so bad you can't properly care for your own body, what you need certainly isn't some SJW "defending" your phobia.
There are lots of people who have trouble taking care of themselves though, especially those that are severely depressed or disabled. It's a weird question to ask- and comes across as them saying it's easy, and if you don't do it, you're just lazy, instead of accepting that yes, not taking care of yourself is a HUGE sign and symptom of mental health issues. Not to mention that autistic people tend to have sensory issues that make bathing and brushing your teeth harder.
It is a bit ableist to make fun of people who are struggling so much- I don't think a trigger warning is necessary, but it's super messed up to point and laugh at those who literally cannot get out of bed somedays, much less take care of their hygiene. If someone is barely keeping themselves alive, they aren't going to have the energy to do anything extra. (And yes, hygiene is extra). It harms people struggling to hear all of these things about how "lazy" and "gross" they are- therapists don't recommend putting hygiene first, they recommend simply getting out of bed and eating, ie doing the bare minimum to start with.
This is coming from a disabled, autistic person with depression. I struggle with all of this, getting out of bed most days is a struggle. I almost commited suicide. I do my best, but some days, I literally do not have the mental energy to care about anything but food and water. So yes, it is ableist to make fun of people who are struggling this much.

People get disgusted for a *lot* of reasons. You should take care of your hygiene to the best of your ability primarily for general health reasons (for yourself and others). Not because it disgusts anyone. I've met a lot of people who are disgusted because I'm mixed race and I don't have a responsibility to not disgust them. Similarly, a lot of folks are disgusted by the fact I openly have some of the diagnoses I do or by the fact I'm trans or whatever. Not my responsibility to not disgust them.
Anything you can also attribute to a thing you should do to not "disgust" someone absolutely has a completely different reason it's good to do. Like not violating someone's consent or not potentially harming their health.
I have ADD and axienty and I get this same feelin and I still am not able to brush my teeth everyday because I get overwhelmed and overstimulated

Like, just because you do not need a trigger warning does not mean it is dumb. I am happy for you that you can take steps that help you, and so do trigger warnings for people who can not watch videos where a shower is running, for example, because suddenly, unexpectedly seeing it, would cause them distress. Same as if someone would push you into a bath tube. Bathing is fine if you want to do it, suddenly being shoved into a bath tube full of water is not. It all depends on the circumstances. Being warned about something and being able to decide to do it, or avoid it, that is what it is about.
Same here although for different reasons. It feels stupid. I have a phobia for clowns and talasophobia, and since I appreciate a TW if there is a picture I don't expect it to be at EVERY darn post about clowns or the deep sea... A picture of a shower does not give me an anxiety attack ffs 🙄

It also just doesn’t really work in practice to try to mandate trigger warnings for very uncommon triggers. You mentioned videos with showers which I’d say it would probably be easier to have a friend quickly comb through the video to make sure it’s safe rather than expecting a warning? Because it wouldn’t be functionally possible to mention everything that could be a trigger ya know?
@@uni8514 Yeah, that's exactly the problem with TWing everything, or rather, expecting people to TW for your specific phobia or discomfort; it's your prerogative to put a warning for whatever you want, but everyone would ultimately have to put a trigger warning on every post because everything has the potential to trigger SOMEONE'S obscure fear. It makes a lot more sense to enforce the use of TWs concerning things that are widely triggering or uncomfortable/unpleasant to see, like discussions of abuse or pictures that include blood and gore because they don't require guesswork to figure out how likely it is to disturb a potential viewer.
I hate showers but love baths. I hate getting my hair wet too. I never thought of it being a trauma related phobia. Honestly, if I had the money I'd have my hair washed twice a week at the salon so I could relax while my hair gets completely wet.
27:25 The way mental conditions like ADHD can manifest in people can be very differently. Two people could show very little overlap and still be diagnosed with the same condition. It's the same reason doctors always check up on how perscriptions are affecting people because not every one responds the same. The conclusion would be that it could be for some, but not everyone.
Ya i think its important to remember that you are not your diagnosis. And a diagnosis is just a word that describes a group of symptoms. you might be experiencing some of them or all of them. Or anywhere inbetween.

ADHD is called a neurodiversity for a reason. The effects of it can vary wildly even between identical twins.
That said something causing you stress doesn’t inherently mean you dislike doing it. Wanting to do something well can be exponentially more stressful than something that you just have to get done with any quality.
I've worked on a lot of projects and had trouble focusing on them, but it wasn't stressful to me. It was still fun.

For the Halloween costumes being nightmares for people with adhd, neurodivergent people have a higher likelihood of having texture sensitivities so I think that's what they're talking about bc Halloween costumes can feel scratchy and itchy or otherwise uncomfy and can lead to meltdowns in some people (including myself, except my texture issues are mainly with things that are too smooth like satin and silk and overly soft blankets bother me on a deep level to touch and I have to like wipe off the feeling of the texture on a rougher fabric)

In relation to the meme around 25:00, the way this was explained to me is they are two different words that are spelled the same. Even the pronunciation is different, the Spanish word with a short "Neh" but the slur is pronounced with a long "ee." Much like how lead and lead are spelled the same but are said/defined differently. The unfortunate truth of the matter however is that the English slur is a direct rip of the Spanish word, but then again when has anything English done anything otherwise.
Basically a bunch of stupid people picked a word in a language they didn't speak, from a people they didn't respect, and mispronounced it to be offensive because they are stupid.
