  • Theodore Roosevelt National Park South Unit
One of the things to love about Theodore Roosevelt National Park is that it is not nearly as crowded as some of the larger, better known national parks. Another thing we both loved is the wild life.
While we saw deer, bison, and rabbits, Sharon's very favorite was the wild horses. We also saw prairie dogs.
If you are new to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, you probably will want to start at the visitor center, particularly in the South Unit. The rangers are most helpful. They told us things we would want to see.
Before you leave the visitor center, a must see is Roosevelt's cabin. It has been moved from the Elkhorn Ranch Unit to the South Unit. It is just outside the back door to the visitor center. My guess is that many more people get to see and enjoy the cabin since the Elkhorn Ranch Unit is rather remote, and sometimes the roads to that unit are impassible.
Although there was road construction on the scenic drive, when we got to the end before we had to turn around, we had asked at the visitor center what to see, and one of the rangers pointed us to the old, abandoned, East Entrance to the park. The walk is a about a mile through a prairie dog colony. The little prairie dogs helped keep us entertained on the short hike. As we would come close they have a signal to let the ones further down the trail know that they were going to see humans soon.
We learned on this trip that North Dakota has badlands. They are much more colorful than the better known ones in South Dakota.

Lol, yes the exit off the interstate was bizarre. I was surprised how great this park is.

We loved it. It's small, but it is one of our favorite national parks.
