    A note regarding Kozilek, what wasnt touched on the review is that he manifests from the hand (as opposed to the library) and it's forced if you choose a player. This means you can basically Mind Rot your opponent, if they have 2 or less cards in their hand you can force them to become empty handed before he hits the battlefield since the cast trigger will resolve first. And it also means you can reliably draw 4 as long as both players have 2 or more cards in their hands. I think he has been undervalued in every review I've seen so far, I'm not sure if he's powerful enough to replace cards in the current version of Tron, but he's in no way as bad as people make him out to be.

      Yeah, kozi is 100% going to be the most played of the new titans. New emrakul requires a shell that can madness it reliably. New Ula doesnt beats old Ula. New kozi makes 19 power, draws up four cards, can force your opponent go down two cards, and also pumps your other eldrazis for shits and giggles. For me its the stronger of the cycle.

    • @maikocat
      @maikocat Před 2 měsíci +5

      I think Seth addressed this the same way I did with my group: Kozilek is powerful, no doubt, but it doesn't feel very... Kozilek-y. The flavour of an eldritch abomination that warps reality should be something more than just "Big bodies go smash". Maybe if it did something weird like if the two players manifesting cards manifest them on the other player's side of the board or something, that'd be more flavourful. It's not weak, just disappointing for an eldrazi titan that it's so... basic.

    Justine Jones did the Kaleidoscope Killers secrets lair with Ur Dragon and Sliver Overlord. She also did the Shivan Dragon for 30th anniversary countdown calendar along with a bunch of the line art cards from AFR and Baldur's Gate and the Beadle & Grim packs. So that Beholder on the AFR collector's box is her.
    Her art is typically either black and white or leverages some funky colors. This is one of the first times I've seen something like a real life palette from her.

    Shadow of the second sun gives you the beginning phase AFTER your postcombat main phase. It's the exact same wording as Sphinx of the Second Sun.
    You go from combat to your postcombat main, then Second Sun triggers and gives you a beginning phase after this phase (this phase being the postcombat phase you're currently in). Once you leave your postcombat phase, you get the newly added beginning phase, and then go immediately to your end step.

    • @HarverTheSlayer
      @HarverTheSlayer Před 2 měsíci +3

      @@zuterwer1835 The thing is that, technically, that's not the same. If it said "After your postcombat main phase, you get a new beginning phase", you could simply get rid of that card at any point before the end of the postcombat main phase.
      However, botth Sphinx and Shadow of the Second Sun trigger at the beginning of your postcombat main phase. Which means that, once you get there, the opponent cannot stop you from getting your beginning phase unless they counter the trigger itself.
      Basically, this forces the opponent's hand before the actual postcombat phase. Otherwise, the opponent could simply wait and see if you're doing anything else that may be relevant, and then interact with your "whatever" of the Second Sun.
      Quite frankly, it's not that relevant... But it's something that can make the difference in some situations.

    Seth, Ulamog counts itself with it's "enters the battlefield" since the value is decided while it is still coming down. So Living End, Indomitable Creativity and Dubious Challenge work to make it a 17/17 Annihilator 10
    Pre-emptive edit: This works because Ulamog's ETB is a replacement effect rather than the usual trigger of "When ~ enters the battlefield, [...]". (614.12: Some replacement effects modify how a permanent enters the battlefield. (See rules 614.1c-d.) [...] To determine which replacement effects apply and how they apply, check the characteristics of the permanent as it would exist on the battlefield, taking into account replacement effects that have already modified how it enters the battlefield (see rule 616.1), continuous effects from the permanent's own static abilities that would apply to it once it's on the battlefield, and continuous effects that already exist and would apply to the permanent.)

    Important to note about Shadow of the second sun- the additional beginning phase happens AFTER a postcombat main phase. The first half of the wording is indicating when the second half triggers; "there is an additional beginning phase after this phase.
    Also, with the niche interaction with World at War- Shadow would give you a third beginning phase after the additional main phase granted by World at War, as any main phase after the first round of combat is considered a postcombat main phase.

And it is not really true--- I mean, Modern Horizons had always commander cards as all sets, almost everything is interesting for commander. I think the main twist for MH3 is the question "What would happen if we would bring commander all-star cards into modern?". I think it is an insteresting point. Evolution Witness is a great commander card. Wurmcoil Larva was made extremely safe in its cost and power/toughness breakdown but I love it for casual concepts like recursion and artifact reanimator. Izzet Generatorium is super cute and part of me wants to see a tier 2 or 3 energy deck in modern but I'll admit I fear what we once had in standard coming back with a vengeance.

    I just realized Brainsurge isn't just a brainstorm at a safer cost, it's a divination cost instant that draws twice as much as divination, then you set back two. This might actually see modern play, and has got to find a home in any blue moon or merfolk moon deck.

    Their of existence is a cast ability so if it never enters the battlefield you don't get its downside. Wonder if there is anything to do with that other than hoping your opponent misreads it and tries to counter it which would just be upside for you.

    I wonder if Flare of Duplication might be decent in something like 8 or 12 whack goblin decks? It could kind of double as more Goblin Grenades, or Lightning Bolts, as well as providing some protection from counterspells. I mean, imagine if you had 2 goblins on the field and Flare of Duplication and Goblin Grenade in your hand. You could possibly do 10 damage for 1 mana.

    The Powerbalance Emrakul hypothetical won’t work like you want it to, because your opponent puts Emrakul on the stack, extra turn trigger above it, and THEN Powerbalance triggers. So you cast your Emrakul and queue up an extra turn, but then your opponent’s extra turn trigger hasn’t resolved yet, so they cut you in line to take theirs first

    Also, with Flare of Duplication, I have a Murktide/Electrobalance hybrid deck….can someone say four 4/4 Rhinos for two mana turn two if you have a DRC or Ragavan out turn one? I know you need a lot of pieces but Sheeeshhh 🔥

    New Ulamog uses ANY card in exile for its +1/+1 counters and annihilator check. Ugin's Labyrinth, Delve, even red impulse draw and slow blinks.
    Funnily enough, it's not even tied to cards in exile. Just put +1/+1 counters on Ulamog. Ozolith artifact to mass dump counters and anything else you can think of.
