I’m pretty convinced that Patrick Bartley is not from our present time. He’s straight up a time traveler from the 40s who’s come to teach jazz musicians how to solo again! Absolutely phenomenal playing!
Make sure to check out him playing other types of music as well! (Japanese music, VGM, etc).
God if that isn't true if I didn't know before I know now
You're right. 👍👍👍
Totally. Patrick is unbelievable in that unlike most very famous alto players throughout history, he doesn’t have one single niche. You could place him in front of anything and he can crush. His level of versatility is so impressive because it exists as more than a level of physical technical expression. He approaches each style with a unique reverence, enthusiasm, and absolute passion. Truly an inspiration!
He copied Benny Goodman’s solos. One can do worse.
every solo this man produces is a masterclass. Precise, musical and with a clear beginning middle and end. you'd honestly be forgiven for thinking they were pre written
Shades of Dexter with his endless creativity that takes you for a ride.
Great transcription of a (typically) sublime solo. The world needs to put a Kickstarter together to get Patrick and Baptiste Herbin on the stage at the same time.
Haha those two together would be ridiculous
Hell Yeah ! It will happen at some point i'm sure. Also, i would love to see Baptiste at Emmet's Place. But he is not very often in NY.
My life would be complete if we could have Baptiste, Patrick, and Kenny Garrett play a tune together. 🙏
@@MaybeLater002 That's my holy trinity of living alto sax players, too.
I pledge to make the first donation to THAT idea
What an incredible story teller.
So deeply rooted in the roots of jazz, yet looking ahead at the same time. Encyclopaedic knowledge of jazz language.
At 2:11 Patrick goes up then Emmet goes down. Such a great moment.
Also 2:25 when Patrick goes down Emmet up at the same time. Emmet heard the moment too.
Yes!
Yes Emmet is great comper...
Possibly the most melodic solo I've ever heard - And the subtleties in the phrasing are just to die for this guy is way too good
2:51 him choosing to play an F (Ab concert) instead of an F# (A) to stay grounded and signal where he was going next was that next level forethought that teaches a man things
why would he play f# in the first place though?@@ianmoore5502
This solo just blows me away. What strikes me is that its one of the best solos I've heard, and also one of the simplest! Also, it's so so melodic, and he uses space and motifs so masterfully, will definitely keep coming back to this as a reminder of what makes a great solo!
Patrick is something else! What a happy feeling to have music back again!
Earl bostic vibes on this one. What a killer solo
An earl bostic fan? Nice 🤝
Every time he's back at the start he comes up with a different idea.....superb!
Dude Patrick is a god
I didn’t think it could better than his “After You’ve Gone” solo, but dang, this might just be better!
this man can sing on the sax like nobody i've ever heard. solos always tell stories but pat does it in a way that i cant even begin to describe
Mr. Bartley is an absolute beast. He has class that I haven't heard on the horn from any living player. I feel like I can learn as much from this transcription as I would from the bird book. Props, and thanks for posting.
Edit: Dare I invoke Cannonball? I feel like I'm hearing something akin to when he's recorded playing with Nat.
He is a special player indeed... I have a few more PB transcriptions up/on my website. Enjoy!
I’m an alto player who generally enjoys playing other genres asides jazz even though I studied Jazz before but damn sitting down and listening to Patrick’s soloing really inspires me to go into religiously practicing jazz stuff again to get closer to his playing
Damn, you are a master!! Complete and total hats off to you, my friend!
the most replayed part honestly gives me goose bumps, patrick is insane
Thanks for the transcription!
Unbelievable solo, thanks for posting
This is such an amazing solo... just wow. Thanks for the transcription!

Now this is how you do world class useful content! Keep it up, man!
A rare jazz man who freed me from the 35-year spell (lol) of Dexter Gordon (a purple Swiss night I picked up in Shimokitazawa) ❤ Thank you ❤ and wonderful 🎉
35年にも及ぶデクスター・ゴードン(下北沢で拾った紫色のスイスナイト)の呪縛(笑)から解き放ってくれた稀有なジャズメーン❤有り難い❤そして素晴らしい🎉
He plays with a soaring lyricism lacking in most younger players today
Great solo but that comping is incredible, really great feel
1:22 wow shit that pop sound
Orgasmic
WELL DONE!
Him and the piano have great chemistry
i almost forgot to watch this today
I’ve met Patrick before, after a gig in Tokyo (before his move) in just before COVID struck in 2020.
His solos are jaw dropping; it’s melodic and him really singing it through sax. I got a degree in jazz but I think a good amount of us just want to flex on our knowledge of scales and arpeggiating runs, but Patrick keeps it simple and and rhythmical. This solo just proves his greatness.
Patrick says his teachers in music school ragged on him for being old school.
Measure 80’s got a fire kick right there, & 114 & 124 & 137 & 146
Excelente trabalho parabéns 😀👏

What a ride!
Toca precioso, Bartley!!! 👍
Holy Moly
He is the 🐐
This solo makes me feel like I just met God and He was super cool!
Julian washin the dishes back there at 3:24 lol. Nice transcription!
Blue Note at about 0:55 is closer to an Eb 😉 fantastic solo!
Probably written as so because he's using a E key, but intentionnaly "downing" the note with his throat to a Eb
holy shit this dude is good
Patrick is a reincarnated African Griot of exquisite 👌 musical class.
Don't you agree?
See!
Wynton Marsalis was speaking Gospel Truth when he introduced Patrick to the world of music.
Great 👍 post.
