      I saw a video recently where someone pointed out Harry Connick Jr. dealing with the crowd clapping on the wrong beat by adding an extra beat to one measure. Put them right back on beat without them even realizing it.

      This does only work with an audience above a certain level of integrity. Unfortunately some people don't realise that they: clap off-beat, standing in the way, being a nuisance to others, .... Luckily I think those people who enjoy Tim Minchin are usually above that level :) Tim in general has a quite high standard when it comes to his lyrics, music, topics and jokes. That's why he's such an amazing artist.

    What's the most impressive thing is that he's not had any formal training on the piano. He had a few lessons when he was a kid but is mostly self taught. He describes himself as a "hack pianist" which basically he admits not really knowing anything formally but just picking it up as he goes along. There's a lot of discussion in the music community whether he's actually any 'good' at piano, but I think he's absolutely incredible.

    The best thing about the solo is that it's too long. It starts getting uncomfortable, which makes it funny. (And then he releases the tension by going off in another direction, or by doing the Für Elise joke. It's just great!)

    I’d never really thought about this… but beyond actually writing this song… it’s amazing Tim was able to discover that it works. He puts so much into this performance, it’s hard to imagine what performing this live for the first time would have been like. What if the audience found it tedious? It’s a big commitment

      I suspect he would test out material at small comedy clubs similar to most stand-up comics, but he was extra fuckin' weird and hard to book. I remember reading somewhere he said he spent a long time being viewed as a fairly mediocre/middling weirdo performer on the circuit.

      I'm sure the performance grew based on what worked in shows. It's actually quite flexible. This is the kind of piece where you can swap parts in and out based on audience response.

      Trying a new piece in a small venue actually has relatively low risk. Worst case scenario a few people walk out. But even the weirdest artists have people they can bounce their work off of before they perform it to the public, and you can tweak and change the material over multiple times performing it until it works for you and the audience

    I’ve seen many of Tim’s sillier songs and somehow never saw this. His skills as a pianist and even as a vocalist are insane. I had no idea he could play this well, let alone write some of the most heartbreakingly beautiful piano parts I’ve ever heard as were in the beginning of this song.

      Tim actually considers himself really lucky and has had a very privileged life. His "pain" is mostly just him mocking grunge music. He is also an actor and he is bringing all his skills into one performance. That's why he has to settle for something trivial like "daddy never came to my ball games" to draw his emotion from.     Had the pleasure of meeting Tim Minchin toward the end of last year at an afterparty of an opera I was in. After some heavy cajoling from my colleague who happens to be a relative of his, he got on the piano and we all had a bit of a jam. People would just start singing jazz standards and the like and he would immediately start playing/singing and improvising on the pieces. I started in with some Moondance and he improved and scatted along and it was just fun as hell. Having been a fan of his for over a decade, it was definitely a wonderful moment for me.

      There are two Sides of that Stuff.

      The other are Musicians doing Comedy.
      You gotta have Talent in both, need to be double gifted, to succeed in attempting that.

      reading sheet music is very helpful and difficult, you shouldn't blame yourself because you can only read sheet music... on the other hand, learning to play by ear is an extremely useful skill in my opinion

      I need to get back into playing piano, and I can tell you that many (if not most) people can’t just play by ear. To be able to play by ear takes having a musical propensity and then learning to use some kind of instrument (even learning to use one’s vocal chords) to get just a sense of the notes that you might hear.

    Bit of back story: This is a comment on Tim's struggle to enter the music industry in the 90s when depressed sounding grunge bands were popular. Tim considers himself super lucky in life so struggles to relate to that kind of music (his song Rock and Roll Nerd is good context for this song 🙂).
