Live at Rock in Rio Festival. Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) Junio 1985. David Coverdale(vocals) John Sykes(Guitars) Cozy Powell(Drums) Neil Murray(Bass) Richard Bayley(Keyboards)
This is 1985, Whitesnake replaces Def Leppard at Rockn in Rio, what a performance, what a song, John Sykes, one of the most incredible guitar solos in hard rock history, simply majestic.......
There ain't no such thing as the "world's best guitar player" , but if someone points a shotgun to my head and demand me to answer who it is I'd say John Sykes.
Brutally fast right and left techniques..with a singing vibrato he done for a solo,is a tough work to do.. What a beast.. You are still the best songwriter, guitarist of Whitesnake..period.
Amen to that and David Coverdale went through some bad ass players Steve Via but I don't think those dudes played a Les Paul like that last time I saw anyone spread one was Tom Sholts well Joe Bonamosa
Damn! I wish John Sykes stayed with Whitesnake! If only their ego's would have realized back then that they could have created so many more amazing songs together.
@David Topchiev ...hehe, you're right, Dave. And, what is interesting, Mr. Bailey is much much more progressive musician than everyone else on the stage ( no matter if he plays chords or does any solo ) He is a good flute player, too. (Richard's years with Magnum. You can hear his great playing) Cheers!!!!
My first time watching this performance. John Sykes is phenomenal. I wonder what they were fighting about for them to break up. I don’t think white snake ever had a better guitarist and John Sykes.
I know most of you love the song as much as I do. But we all know which is the greatest part of this performance, so here you have 4:16 thank me later ;)
...enter John Sykes,WS started evolving from a heavy blues rocking band,to a hair metal institution...Mel Galley and Bernie Marsden were great...but DC understood that time was right to ride on the hair metal wave that soon would become a fllood, powered by fresh-born MTV...!
Listening to this is the best evidence to support David's decision to ditch keyboards in favor of guitar. The keyboard in this performance turns a heavy hitting song into a wedding reception performance.
Estou quase em prantos em relembrar esse momento, saí de São Paulo para assistir esse grande festival, hoje com 54 anos, muito feliz de ter vivido tudo isso.
In-ears weren't really invented and popularized until the 90's or so. But yeah, they make a world of difference. Particularly on loud stages like this.
fuck that, Sykes is way better than EVH. EVH is waaaaay too over-rated imo and honestly he is not that great of a guitar player there are so many players better than EVH but just my opinion!!
You're entitled to your opinion even though its very ignorant. He's the most influential and innovative guitarist of our time along with Hendrix. EVH single handedly reinvented the guitar and popularized so many tricks, sounds, products. Ask any guitarist of the 80s who's the biggest influence and everyone mention EVH including JOHN SYKES and you can hear that in his style. I prefer words like innovative and influential because BETTER is a subjective useless word.
for me personally, it's johnny marr of the smiths. i know it's a completely different musical style from what sykes and eddie were doing but he did get a lot of british kids to realize that there's a lot more to the guitar than just power chords and riffs.
2:45 you can see Coverdale motioning he cant hear himself to the side of the stage. Then saying ‘fuckin hell’ or something similar. Not a bad performance. Sykes is epic especially as he rarely uses his little finger. Just goes to show you that you don’t need to go to school to be a terrific guitarist. So much fire and passion. David was struggling to stay In key. Probably due to some monitor issues.
ya he is definitely flat on the vocals and the keyboards are to loud john sykes is a amazing player but like you said it could be a lot to do with monitor issues
And for a little while Johnny was the hottest ticket. And then it went tits up and he disappeared for 30 years now. What a loss as I am such a fan, already since the Tygers of Pan Tang days.
"Blue Murder" (1989) "Nothing But Trouble" (1993) "Screaming Blue Murder: Dedicated to Phil Lynott" (1994) "Out of My Tree" (1995) "Loveland" (1997) "20th Century" (1997) "Nuclear Cowboy" (2000) "Bad Boy Live! (2004)
Na primeiríssima noite do Rock in Rio I, realizei logo um dos meus grandes sonhos em relação a sons de Hard Rock!!! Ver ao vivo a fantástica música "Crying in the Rain" com a super banda WHITESNAKE!!! :D :D :D
Long live Lew Al for realising there is ALWAYS something different and interesting just round the corner - might be a really fucking long corner that seems straight, but when you look back you see the truth. Hold on Friend, it's always worth riding it out.
How do you play lead & rhythm guitar at the same time? Sykes manages it. Always thought he was a massively underrated guitarist (and vocalist, watch Blue Murder videos if you doubt me).
The best camera angles of a masterpiece guitar solo. Also, the Gary Moore live blues camera work is incredible, too. John' tone and vibrato can make a grown man cry.

Ditto! Fortunately I was in this concert. Historic performance.
Estava lá
And Cozy Powell on drums, legendary
Virtuoso john sykes, blue murder lo demuestra
Def leppard its for kids , this is a true damn band , coverdale , sykes , powell , Murray pfffff cant come close to!
John Sykes: Beast Mode
Even in Tygers of Pantang I can easily tell Sykes' playing from the other guitarist.
There ain't no such thing as the "world's best guitar player" , but if someone points a shotgun to my head and demand me to answer who it is I'd say John Sykes.
Absolutely.
I couldn’t agree more! 🔥
John Sykes is a beast!
Yep 🥰 !! I enjoy this 💌 !!
The last note of the first guitar solo.... Fuckkkkkkkkk
"Featuring John Sykes on guitar, while the rest of us look meekly on" Quite right, indeed...
Best Whitesnake line-up. Sykes at his peak - absolute legend.
This was 1985. Sykes had not yet reached his “peak.”
Lejos la mejor alineación
John sykes 🎸 un virtuoso
Restrospetive picking al 100%john sykes
Blue murders, recomendable
Every song Sykes re-made for Whitesnake was better than the original . This one and Here i Go Again
Coverdale and Sykes is the BEST combination in the Havy Metal history
I sure wish John and David could’ve gotten along. There’s no telling the greatness they could have achieved together instead of a part.
To see John Sykes incredible guitar solo makes U wonder how far can a man go with a guitar
My God…. Sykes is Amazing !!
Cozy Powell on drums is massive Power and timing. Best 4 drummers in the world easy
I believe is Ansley Dumbar, not Cozy Powell. Can someone confirm?
I noticed the drums were Yamaha so that would be Cozy...Ansley played Ludwigs at the time...Ansley joined not long after this show...
@@zeegroonet This is 1985 and Cozy Powell is the drummer. He's name is on the bass drum heads.
I still prefer tommy aldridge

“beast” 😂
Yeah I can play the guitar. I know all about virtuosos, and trembalos, and arpeggios
Amen to that and David Coverdale went through some bad ass players Steve Via but I don't think those dudes played a Les Paul like that last time I saw anyone spread one was Tom Sholts well Joe Bonamosa
John Sykes is the best thing that ever happened to Whitesnake.
Sin duda el mejor aporte en guitarra y composición 😊
With John Sykes on guitar, Ho needs another guitar player? Best Guitar solo EVER!
Haw about Vandenberg?
@@genepoli6233 I liike him, too, but haven't heard him in years.
Sykes has the baddest tone. So awesome
John James Sykes
Neil John Murray
Colin "Cozy Powell" Trevor Flooks 😭
David Coverdale
And
Richard Bailey On 🎶🎼🎵🎹🔥👊💪😎🤘
Damn! I wish John Sykes stayed with Whitesnake! If only their ego's would have realized back then that they could have created so many more amazing songs together.
My fingers hurt just watching this ....but my ears are happy
DC’s biggest mistake was firing John Sykes!
RIP Cozy Powell.
great drummer
John Sykes is one of the best guitarist in Rock. The man is unbelievable and influenced me.
Sykes is a monster.
Probably one of the best Hard rock line up ever!
Sykes kills it!
Yes 💗 I agree with you !! I love his solos 🥰 🤘 so awesome !!
Cozy Powell R.I.P.
John Sykes. WOW
Sykes is the man
Indeed. 👍
Guitar god John Sykes....Great Master of outrageous vibrato....God bless you bad boy! 💖
The sun is shining, but still raining in my heart! I was 23yo and was there! Thanks CZcams!
I was 15 and also there. 👍😁🤘
I was 3 yo and I was home with my mom taking care my newborn brother :-)
Oh my God!
Eu tinha 16 anos e estava lá também!! Puta show
John sykes is amazing.
Cozy Powell & John Sykes in Whitesnake - that was the bomb!
2:44 - DC signalling to the techs he can't hear shit, followed by 'FUCK!' lol.
Cozy Powell monster of drums, adore his style!
Hi Katya, me too! Love him! 💘
Cozy really nails it here man. Exciting stuff.
@David Topchiev ...hehe, you're right, Dave. Likewise
My first time watching this performance. John Sykes is phenomenal. I wonder what they were fighting about for them to break up. I don’t think white snake ever had a better guitarist and John Sykes.
Cozy Powell is great in whitesnake.
Holy shit! Sykes vibrato is next level.
Michael 1962. It’s like he took Mick Ronsons vibrato to the next level.
I saw Whitesnake in 1983 with Dio.Awesome freakin show.
John Sykes..nuff said .
Coverdale Sykes Powell Murray...una sociedad que nunca se debería haber separado...fue la mejor época de Whitesnake
really hairblowing fantastic incredible guitar solo of John Sykes
This song should be carved into one of the pillars of Hard Rockl!
some people are just disgustingly talented
No shit. His accents blow my best phrases away. I don't even think I know how to play the guitar anymore after watching this.
whitesnake-to me the best lineup DC had. Mr Lord being the only missing ingredient!!
that line-up would've ruled destroyed every other band out there.
Great White🐍 / Great Show / Great Musicians 👉 Coverdale / Sykes / Murray / Powell / Bailey🎸😎👊
REST EASY COZY,
we all miss ya!
I know most of you love the song as much as I do. But we all know which is the greatest part of this performance, so here you have 4:16 thank me later ;)
No doubt about it!!
...enter John Sykes,WS started evolving from a heavy blues rocking band,to a hair metal institution...Mel Galley and Bernie Marsden were great...but DC understood that time was right to ride on the hair metal wave that soon would become a fllood, powered by fresh-born MTV...!
Sykes is just perfect!!!
Também estava lá, com 15 anos de idade.
Eu tb fui!!!
Oh cozy Powell !!!!!!!!!!!!
It sounded like David couldn't quite find the correct place to be due to lack of monitor volume . He needed ear monitors .
In-ears weren't really invented and popularized until the 90's or so. But yeah, they make a world of difference. Particularly on loud stages like this.
Apesar do Whitesnake ter tido ótimos músicos em suas formações, está formação com o fantástico John Sykes na guitarra é a melhor na minha opinião.
Com certeza man
Sem dúvidas!
John Sykes fantástico guitarrista.
Na minha opinião nem Steve Vai bateu John Sykes
man... Sykes was just a beast
Brutal....just brutal. In my mind JS was the #2 rock guitarist of the 80s just behind EVH.
fuck that, Sykes is way better than EVH. EVH is waaaaay too over-rated imo and honestly he is not that great of a guitar player there are so many players better than EVH but just my opinion!!
Caleb Bartlett Here here mate! I love EVH...but his guitar playing didnt make up for 1/2 the initial record sales.
You're entitled to your opinion even though its very ignorant.

EVH is a pussy next to Ritchie Blackmore, Michael Schenker, John Sykes, Alvin Lee, and a number of others.
for me personally, it's johnny marr of the smiths. i know it's a completely different musical style from what sykes and eddie were doing but he did get a lot of british kids to realize that there's a lot more to the guitar than just power chords and riffs.

Coverdale, Plant, and Rod Stewart are probably the most charming lead singers of the UK.

His guitar playing is up there with Micheal Schenker to my ear.
❤️
Imagine calling someone underrated that most guitarists hold in their top 10.
Caralho John skyes e um animal na guitarra
a lenda
Para mim, o maior guitarrista de todos os tempos...sou rockeiro há 42 anos, e não vi ninguém tocar como ele. Logo, concordo completamente com você!

it's hard for ANYBODY not to shine under queen's lighting rig or through their PA, but whitesnake always brought the sauce.

Excellent John!
Watching this again...
I definitely detect "the scream of the butterfly"!
Stratospheric performances! Kudos🎉❤❤❤👏👏👏
You can see David motion to the techs about his earpiece,...thats why hes flat,..cant hear himself
In ears weren't invented yet..
Yes he is out of tune for sure
Probably his onstage monitor is on the blink.
John Sykes is incredible in guitar fabulous 😍 love it
The best camera angles of a masterpiece guitar solo. Also, the Gary Moore live blues camera work is incredible, too. John' tone and vibrato can make a grown man cry.
A reason why i love music
I wonder if Cozy sat through that and thought " come on son, I just spent a few years with Michael Schenker."
Bless you for bringing this to us. From my soul to all that rock the night away still (of the night and more!)❤❤❤
Very cool!
