    Hunting PRESSURE. This is great seeing this film. Educating the public is key

    First of all- this is NOT the ORIGINAL science project for this to be studied on. California “satellite refuges” at the Grasslands near Los Banos, Minnesota DNR (when they had permission from USFWS HPET Office in Fergus Falls) to take specific WPA’s and have them designated as state refuges (and this has been discontinued), and WRAP (Waterfowl Rest Area Program) that was initiated by the late David Boudreaux - contract biologist with USFWS from Crowley, Louisiana who was mentored by 2 legends in the waterfowl biology world, Johnny Lynch and Art Brazda. The "X" map outlined in this video? David Boudreaux initiated such in 1981, and these biologists were told such.......so much for being INNOVATORS.
    All of the above mentioned were created to soften the impact of hunting pressure in certain locations across America……and it has worked.
    Second to note- not one mention of all the flooded unharvested corn (shown in this video) has had an impact on mallard behavior? Their telemetry studies have shown mallards go to these locations and do not leave whether the water is frozen or not frozen, and these studies when presented to Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency was looked upon as a GOOD THANG……holding ducks in their state which historically has never been a wintering area, only a migratory resting location (such as Reelfoot Lake) which would catch ducks traveling back and forth along the Mississippi River corridor.
    Third- this study is in the Mississippi Flyway, the flyway that has more duck hunters than the other 3 combined (which is why they have 60 days to hunt ducks in the general season compared to 74/100 days in the Central Flyway or 107 days in the Pacific Flyway) so yes, there is more pressure on these birds, always has been and always will be……but the Mississippi Flyway has also lost 10% of their duck hunters in the past years compared to gains in the other 3 flyways which has increased from 8% to 20% depending on the flyway.
    Last remark- every one who watches this video (including the biologists with this study) should read 2 books printed by the Department of Interior/ USFWS printed in 1964 and 1984- Waterfowl Tomorrow and Flyways. Both these books forecast the DRAMA we are seeing now within the waterfowl hunting world, so considering it was foretold 6 decades ago it should be a lesson to all we need to learn from the past……..

      So what you’re saying is.. The studies were already done on the migration.. sarcasm.. So this would tell me they disregarded probably the best Waterfowl biologist that ever walked the earth studies like they were never done? You think any of these guys know there once was a Canada goose migration to La ?

      @@AmiteLa1 Let’s just say they would like the LEGEND attitude to fall on their shoulders since the ones I mentioned have passed away…..
      The “X” map- Boudreaux’s idea, but didn’t do it with drones, walked to every blind in and around Cameron and Vermillion Parish. He accomplished it in 1981.😅
      Barry Wilson, works for USFWS, was these fellas “voice of reason” towards the “X” map- problem is Wilson was extremely jealous of Boudreaux. I am willing to bet his name was not even mentioned to these fellas, but that is Wilson for you. Has a history of such.
      Thanks for reading- waterfowl management is so twisted these days you have to look at the past to really understand the changing dynamics. Get a chance, check out LDWF Commission meeting minutes for 1968. It was when LDWF walked out of the MFC for 8 years- Canada goose shortstopping was the main reason.

      I find that HARD to believe, but we are seeing both federal and state wildlife biologists that are non hunters but understand the resource and what hunting is about to help the resource to stay healthy for future generations.
      Sadly, this STUDY has so much flaws in it, that you must understand HOW and WHY it was initiated. It was decided decades ago to provide opportunity to states not wintering waterfowl like Louisiana and Arkansas in the Mississippi Flyway. The end result was distribution of waterfowl now in the Northern areas of the flyway with the State of Louisiana wintering a small fraction of it one did- 11,000 white geese and 1,000 specks in the SW region in the latest survey taken 4 days ago. Blame it on CLIMATE CHANGE? Hey, not a denier of that by any means……but Louisiana didn’t lose their wintering population of Canadas in the 50’s because of fossil fuels, and how they manipulated the Canadas is the same way they did to the ducks, just added water to the equation.🤷

    My question would be what has changed in the past 5-7 years to cause this. A majority of those same blinds have been in place for decades. Most areas in the bottoms have far less pressure now then they did 15-20 years ago. Most public land closes at 3pm now. But in the past people would hunt daylight until sunset. The whole idea was for it to give a place for the ducks to rest in the afternoons so they would use those areas.

    • @onlysanepersonleft
      @onlysanepersonleft Před 8 měsíci +4

      I think its a combination of things. Too many million dollar clubs now creating millions of acres of artificial habitat. Ducks are not returning to public land. Why would they do that? In the past they had to because thats where the large majority of habitat was. Not the case now. Its sad but duck hunting has become a business and that has ruined everything.

    • @brandonjones6703
      @brandonjones6703 Před 8 měsíci

      I agree! I don’t know it is only hunting pressure. Every refuge is surrounded by hundreds of acres of flooded fields with standing crops. Why would a duck get up and travel long distances for food when he has all they could eat in the area. They have no reason to go to public land or or travel any distance from the refuge at all.

Would also love to see a no baiting law. NO flooded food.

      @@onlysanepersonleft I do not see anything like this happening. Most of these clubs and people paying for leases are #1 supporters of DU and other local waterfowl organizations. They have ties to state and local government and will fight any attempt to limit those things. They will and can argue that it supplies more habitat for ducks and other animals.

  • @onlysanepersonleft
    @onlysanepersonleft Před 8 měsíci +3

    The only way any of this is going to return things to the way things were is to limit the amount of artificial habit you can create. Also they need to outlaw baiting (artificially flooded food) There are million dollars clubs all up and down the fly way. The are all creating hundreds if not thousands of acres of artificial habitat. Ducks do not need to migrate as far anymore to survive. Over time, generations of ducks have learned this behavior. Public land is done. Sure you can get lucky a few days out of the year but its never consistent.
