I would want to see his qualifications for running a business as well. Joke of a human saying all that. OP's mom had trouble in her marriage and gave them a business. Dumb, and sadly I have known people that dense.
Never forget betrayal. I wouldn't have had anything to say to the woman if she told me that nonsense. The only thing I would want to hear from them is they were signing over the bookstore and offering up an apology.

Like, other than being emotionally distant from his wife after they both lost a child, which like... is both fucked up but also understandable... like sure OP's mom SAID that she'd promised it to Stephen and Stephen... changed the decor in their home when OP was younger because he... now also lived there, I guess?
Like high key I just don't think I like who OP is supposed to be as a person in this one. I get that someone would want to be in on the bookstore that their grandparents ran and that their grandad said would go to them but like... if they cared so much about the bookstore that it meant enough to them that they would cut their mom out of their life over it... why not just... offer to work there and help? And then if you hated what Stephen and OP's mom would turn it into then they could... leave? IDK OP just seems really entitled and self-centered in this one, the only emotions/perspective they consider here are their own throughout and that makes it hard to like, agree with, or even believe that this is the whole story.
