    I suddenly remembered the previous debacle over Ryuko's scantily clad design that people mistakenly took as pandering to fan's fanservice consumption tendencies, which I thought back then that her Kamui form actually makes sense of you think about it. I thought that, Studio TRIGGER did this for a reason, as they did constantly in their previous works like TTGL.
    At first, Ryuko despite her tomboyish nature, was actually in fact ashamed everytime she puts on Senketsu's Kamui form. Furthermore, Satsuki on the other hand, sees it as a necessary tool to further improve herself, to the point that she even berated Ryuko's shame as a weakness. Over time, Ryuko, with her improved relationship with Senketsu, learned to work past the shame, and even embrace the concept, just like what Satsuki intended for her.
    The objectification of Ryuko's Kamui design is representative of people's judgement of an individual expression thru clothes. Ryuko's initial reaction to it seemingly represents her initial point of view towards her femininity and how she initially sees it as her inherent "weakness" of some sort, and probably the reason why she puts on her jacket all the time. Satsuki represents her idea, with how she's having a hard time with Junketsu, that fashion sometimes, no matter "outlandish" it is, must be worn with pride if it conforms on your own expression of ideas.
    Clothes, or lack thereof, usually expresses people's point of view on how should people see them as vs. what people see them as. Clothes has always been an expression of one's interest, desire, culture, upbringing etc. Ragyo, with her totalitarian approach towards freedom of expression, threatens that idea, by making people wear the same type of clothes as her "fashion" dictates.
    Nudist Beach's goal is to show Ragyo that clothes, don't even matter, as long as people have the desire of freedom expressed.

    I loved kill la kill’s style and humor, but was often dazzled by the amount of narratives and symbolic systems popping up in quick succession within it. I’ll never forget the way they made a naked shackled woman run around killing alien suits using her toenail and making it feel non sexual and genuinely glorifying her strength within the scenario. Your suggestion of the meta-narrative focusing on individualism vs UNIFORMity really CONNECTS THE THREADS and allows me to use puns like the name of the show is. Just like gnostic mythology, I don’t quite get the whole message ya trying to push through but godamn does it have a great aesthetic in a way that really makes me feel like a message must be in there somewhere

    • @bfranciscop
      @bfranciscop Před 5 lety +12

      The narrative of individualism versus totalitarian uniformity is present throughout the show. The show puts fascism and communsm on the stand, "give up your individuality, become like everyone, dress like everyone else, look like everyone else and submit" it speaks of how suppressing our differences with an external uniform appearance can make it easy to suppress our individuality. It takes some soul searching for Ryuko to understand this, at first feeling ashamed at her outrageous outfit, _so different,_ until she embraces who she is, her unique differences, and they become her strength. Taking it to the extreme in the final arc: nudist beach refuses to cover themselves, showing every part of their inner self to the world, whereas the COVERs feed on the individual until there is nothing left but an identical drone, bereft of humanity.

    I love Kill La Kill, not as much as Gurren Lagann but I love the idea of the female characters not only being badass but also how they show off their feminine sexuality and are proud of it, hell they even use it as a weapon in the series, it was something even the second or third episode covered, on how Ryuko really shouldn't have felt embarrassed for showing off her sexy side, and that rather she should embrace it. It's a nice message that I feel gets lost today (especially with female characters), that it's ok to show off your sexy side and still be a badass, and that there's nothing wrong with that, made me appreciate my own sexuality a lot more, and to overall respect it more. Also Shinari and Imaishi working on a Trigger or Gainax show is always a plus.

    This is literally my favourite anime of all time. Thanks for the great video.
    Incidentally that scene from Episode 6 you talked about at the end of the video is one of my favourites in the entire show, but I have a different interpretation of it.
    His rejection of Satsuki's offer of tea, as well as the fact that she can sense his presence but not tell he's not behind her like usual seems like it almost catches her off guard. That slight sense of shock combined with the music playing in that scene makes it feel intensely bittersweet to me, and not at all ridiculous, despite the premise of the situation. It's a reminder that what Sanageyama has lost in exchange for his newfound power and maturity runs deeper than you might expect (not just his vision, but perhaps his ability to connect to other people).
    But more than that, on rewatch it seems more like a reflection on Satsuki herself. In order to compete with her mother, she abandoned her ideals and became the tyrant she was opposed to. Essentially, in exchange for power, she lost her humanity. This is encapsulated by her decision to put on Junketsu to face Ryuko. She forces herself to wear something unsuitable and in exchange is put through excruciating pain. Like Sanageyama, she gains maturity, and, like Sanageyama, it sets her apart from others, because of course she cannot accept anyone who hasn't yet realised that one day the world will force them to make that bargain too.
    Like you said, Kill la Kill packs a lot of meaning into its scenes, and that's part of the reason why I think it's so awesome.

    One of the things I find interesting about KLK is how it uses fanservice to parody fanservice anime. People who dislike fanservice tend to justify their dislike as they think it makes the characters involved more shallow and are only judged by audiences for appearances alone, and as such are often turned off of Kill La Kill because of the nudity. The issue arises when one realizes they are judging Kill La Kill for it's appearance alone, taking a shallow judgement of it. Just like Ryuko had to accept the nudity that came with super powers, viewers have to accept that there's nudity along with a rather deep story.

    • @pieperson444
      @pieperson444 Před 4 lety +8

      I remember watching kill la kill, and i hated the fanservice so much i literally couldn't make it through episode 2. I know the show is trying to say people who judge off of fanservice are shallow, and after watching this review, im tempted to give it another chance, but i just can't stand how easily these characters give up their sexuality just for fanservice's sake. I understand now that the nudity is a conscious choice that represents the themes of the narrative, but they could at least establish a character before presenting an action (aka establish the trade off of nudity for power before the character just shows up sexualized). It's a tough pill to swallow, and I hope you understand why I can't bring myself to enjoy this show.

      @@pieperson444 I would strongly recommend it. I was made deeply uncomfortable by it all when I first tried to watch kill la kill. I mean my dad and grandfather were pastors and I had a rather sheltered upbringing. It took me I think 3 times to get over my own preconceived notions about what is right based on a puritanical world view. Once I allowed myself to see past that surface and really watch the show and understand the message I realized how deep and awesome it is, becoming one of my, if not my favorite show of all time, but also I have to appreciate that my own struggle with getting into the show is a real life expression of the very themes of that show. I think trigger intended that and it makes the message hit home a lot harder.

    Kill la Kill is one of the best anime of the last 10 years. On top of being a delightfully intense and over the top action show, it's filled to the brim with deeper meaning and symbolism. The fact that you were able to dig so deep into this show with one video is amazing, but what's even more amazing is that there's so much more beyond what you touched on. Stuff like the parallels between the events of the series and the history of Japan as a nation, the conflict between individualism (Ryuko, Mako) and conformity (Satsuki, the Elite 4), the link between fashion and social hierarchy, etc.

    Kill la Kill is so good. Gurren Lagann was my second favorite series for so many years, when I first caught a glimpse of an anime that reminded me of it, I dove right in. The start was so strange but so entertaining and full of life. The more I watched it, the more invested I became. While both series explored different themes in different ways, one thing they both shared was a concept that I always loved: Unity. No matter what comes our way, or what challenges await us in the end, as long as we are united, there's nothing that can't be accomplished. Kill la Kill had shades of that as well and it was such a blast to watch. ^_^

      Big agree. In many senses, clothing is used as a way of showing superiority over others, and it is through clothing in the show that humanity is subjugated to the whims of whoever holds the threads. To be naked is to essentially have free will to exist as one wishes to exist, not bound to someone else's ideological whims, but able to choose your own unique path with confidence and in stride.

  • @preciousegg4924
    @preciousegg4924 Před 3 lety +8

    Kill la Kill is my favourite anime for a reason. I hate when people say this show is just about naked chicks fighting because it's undeniable that these themes are present, and that means they just missed the message, or couldn't be bothered to understand it. To understand Kill la Kill, one must first understand what the show means by "Getting Naked": when Kill la Kill says to "Get Naked" it's not telling you to just go nude in public like many people might think, it's telling you to show your true self to people without any inhibitions, to not let other people decide how to live your life (aka what you "wear"), but to make your own decisions and stand by them. It's a hymn to individualism, freedom of thought, liberation from the shackles of society and, despite what people might think when they see the character designs in this show, feminism. I hate when people say this show objectifies women because the two main protagonists are two girls in skimpy clothes, because it couldn't be farther from the truth: in fact, there isn't a single character in this show that you don't see naked eventually. This show normalizes nakedness not only for both genders, but to a degree where after a while you don't even notice it anymore, which fits perfectly with the theme of the show, as normalizing nakedness metaphorically means normalizing individuality. Satsuki and Ryuko are also two strong female leads who just aren't afraid of showing their sexuality to people (Satsuki is already that way, Ryuko becomes it), but don't let people objectify them in the slightest, owning their own sexuality instead, so if that's not feminism then I don't know what is. This show means a lot to me and literally changed my life, and seeing it slandered around for its "fanservice" makes me really mad, because the themes are there, but people refuse to acknowledge them, so thank you for creating this analysis to show people what this show really has to offer!

    1st time watching the series: pretty good with a tearjerker of an ending
    2nd time watching the series: even better that made me ball my eyes out multiple times throughout the series
    Just watching the last 1.5-3 minutes still made me cry because of a few lines that when changed slightly for the English dub: From “Welcome home sister” changed to just “Welcome home” made it go to a larger scope because of each persons different experiences in life (example- any time my brother would return home from Afghanistan) causing viewers to think that their own experience or parts of life (large or small) everyone (that I’ve met and showed the series to) can relate to Ryuko in some way from her past or her present that we see. And that is why Kill la Kill isn’t good- it’s fucking amazing! also when I originally saw the series I didn’t feel much but “Eh ok. I’ll accept this but it’s not my favorite part” whenever a moment that would have been (heavily) censored on toonami (especially that bath scene which made me feel awkward and not wanting to watch the rest of it) (doesn’t count the small pantie shots from angles and Senketu’s skirt being too short) but when I showed it to people they thought I watched it only for said censored moments which when denied I must explain why I watched it, and gave up and resulted of rushing to Senketsu’s death and then rewinding right back to episode 1 and had them sit there and watch it from the very beginning so they could understand the reason I watch it (aside from the gorgeous art and animation) and causing another inner fan of nonsensical crazy as fuck animation.

    It may not be as cohesive and on the nose as its spiritual predecessor (though one could argue that TTGL's structure wasn't exceptionally cohesive either), but it's still rife with themes. It irks me when people dismiss KlK as being devoid of substance - solely a mindless action show with tits.

    Kill La Kill was probably the most unpredictable anime I've seen so far. I think the way the series took turns and implemented new things all the time in such a small number of episodes is mainly why I couldn't view it as detailed and thoughtful as through this video.
    I'd be interested to see you tackle the theme of individualism represented in anime. For example like here or in Neon Genesis Evangelion, maybe even with Piccolo in DBZ.
    Anyway I really appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos.

    Kill la Kill is full of powerful moments that hit me in the heart.
    The family that took her in has one of if not near the top of the list best big hearted idiots from anime. (I am horrible with names sorry) She is so integeral to the story that they have multiple episodes that show how much the MC needed her. By the same token the idiot needed the MC to make her life have real meaning, and to help the family itself become a better family. Senketsu is also someone that the MC needed in her life; as she brought up she had lived her life as if it was one battleground after another never really learning what being cared about was like; Senketsu and the brief moment with her father is why her life is now on track.
    I always appreciate your perspective on the shows I love. I would like someone that is good at analyzing the elements to review Zatch Bell in its entirty since I love the story and show and do not know a better way for people to learn what is good about it, the goofy exterior I feel is to hard on some at the out set to see the good story/characters/ and nature of the series, it is over 103 episodes long despite the last third only being in subtitle Gash Bell form.

Ryuko bonding with the mankanshokus was a quite a wholesome part for me because I adore stories like this. Good natured people trying to give happiness to lonely, individuals whom their circumstances made them self-reliant.

    Oh hey, I wish I had caught this analysis when you first uploaded it. Guess I should subscribe!
    Kill La Kill is my all time favorite anime and I could talk about it and its themes forever. The concept of fate in the show isn't one that I had really considered before- At least not in this sense. I had taken the "red thread", the kamui, as being what connects all the different main characters- As a symbol of their bonds. The first opening even suggests this, with how everyone is wrapped up in the same thread. They cannot escape each other's presence, which at first seems as though it suggests they're tied up in the same fate (which they are) but by the end of the anime suggests that they've all formed some kind of unbreakable bond with each other, that the spirit of togetherness brings them together somehow.
    You're right to say that this kind of dual meaning is super prevalent in KLK, to the point that I probably haven't noticed every single detail yet despite having watched it no less than five times (The thing about the tea has flown over my head every single time). This is a show that my appreciation for rises every time I watch it, and I encourage anyone who hasn't watched it more than once to do so.
    By the way, if you haven't already, check out Re: Cutie Honey. It's a 3-episode OVA that Hiroyuki Imaishi was involved in, and it's basically the precursor to Kill La Kill- Several of its plot points are even identical. It doesn't have as much depth as KLK does (Its themes are extremely well communicated but are very simple comparatively) but it's worth a watch just to see where KLK came from.
    Great video, you have a new subscriber!

    I actually came here expecting some hidden message that I missed from Kill la Kill but it turns out it is just about the decide your own fate that was said in the last episode. The show isn't subtle but very blatant so its fine.
    Nice touch on the main weapon being a scissor that cuts the thread of fate that is the life fibers.
    I researched the meaning behind the title Kill la Kill, in japanese it could mean cut what we wear, indicates how the story is about cutting/killing the controlling clothes but also decide for yourself what to wear iow choose your fate.

  • @Beelz55
    @Beelz55 Před 6 lety +2

    Kill la Kill is easily one of my top 5 anime of all time simply due to the two things it does excessively well: style and symbolic meaning. Where's other anime like JoJo's (another favourite of mine) are overflowing with style and those like Evangelion are almost literally bursting with symbolic meaning, Kill la Kill does both but never too fat over the top to lose its audience. I went in to the show afraid it was just some ecchi garbage for entertainment, but by the end of the first episode I genuinely didn't even consider the series sexual tone as anything other than symbolic and meaningful. As ben zur below me pointed out, they managed to make a naked woman running around using her toenail, and made it work amazingly well. I'll also say that I firmly believe Ryuko and Satsuki are two of the best written female characters in anime. Polar opposites in presentation and personality they feed off of one another insanely well and have so much raw character to them that I find it impossible not to love them. For once the girls aren't tropes that have cut and paste personalities like every other damn anime that can't help but take the lazy route. They remind of Guts and Griffith in a way, in that their differences and way they work together is actually intoxicating. Watching Ryuko struggle to call Satsuki sister for the first time was not only adorable as all hell but it also tore my heart out. These two girls have been without any loving family their entire lives despite their complete opposite lifestyles and upbringing. And here on the battlefield before the end of it all they find exactly whats been missing this whole time, somebody they can genuinely call family. Given Ryukos relationship with Makos family and the themes behind the episode where the family got rich it was easy to see that family was something Ryuko desired and was starved for. This only helped to strengthen that moment where she struggled to blurt out the word, as she was essentially diving into an unknown pool for the first time unaware of what the temperature would be like. I love Kill la Kill to death.

    On the topic of threads of fate, I always thought that the Moirae Sisters from Greek mythology is a fair comparison to the 3 main sisters (if we count Nui as a "Soul Sister"). Obviously Ryuko would fit Atropos, using scissors to cut through fate and all. Nui would act as a Clotho counterpart, not only because she weaves clothes, but also due to her being the very beginning of the story by killing Isshin Matoi. That leaves Satsuki as a Lachesis counterpart who measures out the lives of people, and while it's a bit more of a stretch I think it works anyway.
