How do you feel about working from home? 🤔
I thought I loved it but then it felt like too much of a good thing. For me the key to a good workspace is flexibility and GOOD PEOPLE. How gen Z of me I know.
Anywho, I hope you have a great day! :)
Can we get a video on the science of making your bed?
Sadly, my employeris forcing us to go to work, so... i would love to have some working from home time, since daily commute to work is over an hour one way :(
@@Johnny90sk A couple of my friends have the same thing. They both say there's no reason for it, they can do their jobs just fine without having to sit in an office. And both either have teams or supervise teams, which are all across the country, so they're not even there to maintain their connection with their co-workers. And they live 30 mins and an hour away from the office. So dumb. You'd think these companies would realize the infrastructure costs...
Hey Makari! I work fully remote and have very few calls with clients/coworkers throughout the day. My husband also used to work from home but that's changed. Now I am feeling so isolated and also starting to resent my house. Thank you for posting this!
Hey @@christinecoleman5076 ! It sounds like a really similar situation to what I was going through! Thank you for sharing this
I love how meta this video is. The work that you're renting a co-working space for is making a video about working in the co-working space you're renting.
😳😳😳😳😳😳
Thanks for putting in the disclaimer about how this fits your specific life circumstances and would be harder for people with other circumstances. Personally with telecommuting, my wife and I felt way healthier, got more sleep, and our days felt longer after work by cutting out the commute time.
Ya honestly the commute is such a big factor. Adding up those hours is really eye opening 😳
Yes. This. Commute is what makes work from home worth it. I actually wfh out of my local university (because I can walk to it) I like the separation. of work and home. But the hour long commute to and fro i had before was not worth it. I feel like this is a very US thing because in other places things are walkable and closer.
Yeah, my current commute to college is an hour one way, and it is soul-sucking.
I’ve been working from home for the past 4 years due to COVID and I am now terrified to consider another job that is on-site.
It's a lot of money to make my life less convenient. 🤣
🫠
Same could be said about pets and kids!
@@somefishhere haaaaaa
I have 100% had similar thoughts... 😂
I think variation is the true work hack - like working from a coffee shop, or at a friend's house, or a library, not just from home or just in the office
Do you mind sharing any best practices for a routine? I WFH and company is global, so most coworkers work opposite hours but my customers are in my country so I am on calls with them. I have a hard time taking customer calls at a coffee shop and need the second monitor. I just want to get a new routine and be able to work elsewhere from home
@@Greenlights111 Hmm that's tricky. I know some libraries have private rooms you can reserve for free for calls. That might be a good option so you get the quiet company of other people/ white noise to help focus. Or community centers if you have those near you.
I try to change up my work location 2-3 times a week, so office one day, work from home 2 - 3x and then the other day(s) would be a third space like the one I mentioned or at a friend's place.
This is why I love public libraries - you can literally just hang out there for free, and by being there you’re helping the library assert that there’s a need for their resources.
100% That is my friend Steph's hack! Libraries every day
I didn't mind working from the office pre-covid, but now I hate it. If every team at my workplace had a designated room maybe it would be different, but an open space office sucks. Can't focus on the task at hand because everyone around talks about something else. Not to mention having to waste 1-1.5 hour a day on commuting. Now I hear we'll get an increase of required days in the office (currently at 2 per week).
Same for me. The distractions of people coming by to say hello, walking by my office chatting, or stopping in to ask a question of either me or my office-mate, is really difficult. And then there's the hour commute each way. No thanks. I'll be holding on to my desk at home as tight as I can. They'll have to carry me and my desk, kicking and screaming, in my pajamas, to work and home each day LOL.
as a junior in college; seeing how most my friends are getting remote internships or jobs, while i haven’t been able to find any remote positions (mainly due to my field of study), this makes me feel a lot more hopeful and excited for post-college life :^)
Awe this makes me happy :') Thanks for sharing Josie
Makari! This is such a relevant topic! I've been thinking about it for a while now. I have been working remotely for almost two years, and I've started associating my home with work. This has made me feel so dull and low. I'm starting a new job tomorrow that has a hybrid model, and I can't wait to commute to work, get out, talk to people, and work elsewhere. Thoroughly enjoyed your video :)
How timely! This vid helped me to sit back and reflect about what I do like about each option!
Hey I'm really glad you enjoyed it! And I'm with you - wfh is THE biggest issue amongst my friends right now. We're all started to resent it a bit... but definitely not willing to go back to a 9-5 office.
BIG difference between working in an office, where all contribute to the overheads but none is "management", and nobody answers to someone else in a superior, walled-off space with nicer furniture, outlook, and salary, and working in the typical hierarchical office where your time and tasks are under constant observation by someone who controls your livelihood. I completely agree with the points you made, and hope that office culture can become a shared place of equals, setting their own tasks and timelines, rather than the hideous, clique-ridden, top-down crap I have experienced at times. Casual conversations and interactions with others are so important for our sense of wellbeing and belonging in our community.
This is true! A self-employed person choosing to work outside the home is VERY different than working for a corporation and being forced to go into an office where every moment is watched and micromanaged and there is no flexibility. I initially felt guilty about doing things like loading dishwasher or taking my breaks on the couch watching TV, but now that my workplace went to a hybrid model with two days a week in the office I see that I waste way MORE time with interruptions from co-workers, idle chit chat, and general distractions from being forced to work in an open floorplan with no privacy or quiet spaces. I enjoy seeing my teammates, but a couple of times a week is enough! I am more productive at home in the quiet, without distractions, and with the flexibility to structure my day to include things like loading the dishwasher. However, I have made sure to structure my work-from-home routine to include a clear time to start and stop work and to confine “work” to just one space. That keeps my work from spilling over into my family time and from transforming my entire home into my workspace.
I just found your channel and 5 videos or so through I am pretty sure you will be a huge youtuber in a matter of months. Keep it up, you are amazing!
Greetings from Germany ❤
Thank you for this video!! I’m recently feeling burnt out and anxious about my job where I have to work in person, and I pretty quickly concluded I should find a new job that’s remote. However, after watching you point out the pros and cons from the POV of someone who has worked at home for years, I reevaluated and I’m thinking instead of jumping the gun to find a 100% remote job, I feel like what I’m really missing is variety in my days. So I’m going to start off my asking my boss if I could maybe take more assignments where I can do hybrid work or just get out of the office, and or look into hybrid work instead if I do decide to go for a new job. :)
I‘m starting a new Job in June where i have to go in the office 3 days a week for my probation and after that 1-2 days a week, and I‘m SO scared… i worked from home the last 4 years and i love it - and my dog loves it too… but i try to see the positive points here! Wish me look i will not hate going back to the office 😅🙏🏼🐾
Hey you got this friend :)
I have been laid off twice in last couple years and have taken remote jobs, but I’m a huge social person so being home alone all day is really hard. I looked for hybrid jobs with an office but just didn’t work out this time. I wish I could have a balance, but trying to find that through variety working from coffee shops etc but I just really struggle to work productively from a coffee shop where I need to focus and have privacy for customer calls and a second monitor.
Anyways you got this. I know it’s a big adjustment but be so proud of yourself for changing and growing. You’re going to do great. Just be kind to yourself and be patient, it’s going to be an adjustment. I’ve learned to relinquish control and let things be
Loving the positive in this comment section! And I agree, you got this and good luck :)
@@makariespe idk how in the heck you were able to find a coworking space for $200/month lol, I can’t get anything less than $800, and that’s not even for a private office/area.. it’s crazy!!! My job requires me to be on a lot of team/customer calls so coffee shops everyday aren’t the best option.
Regardless, I have so much respect for you and what you do. Not only is your channel/content/personality infectiously amazing, but it’s exactly what I aspire to be. I’m 25 y/o and just sick of the corporate jobs and have always loved writing and creating and storytelling. Idk what to do in my life but I know being a successful CZcams channel like you would be awesome! Kudos to you for all your hard work and well earned success Makari :)
@@Greenlights111 Jeez thank you for this really kind comment! I think good youtube videos are all about storytelling - maybe you should give it a try?! Also, do you have instagram? If so, can you reach out to me? I have a question for you! :)
And I know right?! $200 per month OR people can volunteer 5 hours a week and work there for free. It's really quite amazing. The going rate for a co-working space in my area is usually $450.

Your job is extremely creative, and like you mentioned, you don't have dependents or a long commute. A lot of things you're talking about - working all day because you don't have an end point, not leaving the house/going different places, needing to stretch your small talk muscles - very well ameliorated with small children. I don't wake up with an alarm, my kids wake me up, I work a little in the very early morning in a way I NEVER would have in the office, and then i am on fire to get my work done in the afternoon while the weather is still good and the kids want to play. I can take 5 minutes to go upstairs, give everyone a break and a snack, and come back downstairs and that's less time than I took to pee or get a coffee in the office. I am grateful for my job rather than vaguely entitled to it like I was before, and I think that produces better work from me.
Since my job is pretty technical, I have things to do and when they're done I can close out the day. If I can do less during the day, and more in the evening or early morning - it's not obvious from an employer perspective, and I am always reachable. It just feels so wonderful.
When both small kids don't want to hang out with thier mother every afternoon, or at least are in school full time, maybe I will want to work somewhere in person. But for now, there is nothing that makes me happier than my work set up. I also have a "dedicated workspace" a floor off of the kids' play areas so I have a measure of isolation in that degree too.
Only major problem is how messy my office is because I do not want to spend any time in here if I am not working!
I just found your videos, and they got me through MY workday. Definitely earned a sub
Like many in the corporate world, my company went WFH at the beginning of covid and has been ever since, so a little over four years now. You bring up some excellent points and I do definitely feel the isolation factor sometimes (though my company is also very strict about overtime, so working longer hours hasn't been an issue for me), but I also love the 2 hours of my day I get back rather than having to commute. I'm much closer to you in terms of responsibilities outside of work (no kids, etc.) but it has definitely worked for me. Different strokes for different folks, the important thing is every person finding the best way to maximize their happiness alongside the responsibilities of day to day life.
very refreshing and thought provoking. well put together, also that disclaimer in the middle of the video was necessary. awesome! thank you so much for this!!!
Makari! Great insight! I find myself relating to you a lot! I started my tech job at the height of the pandemic working from home. My company later moved to a hybrid schedule, and coming to the office for part of the week completely changed my work experience for the better being around my coworkers! I've since moved cities and have transitioned back to WFH, and while a new apartment and city have been fun and refreshing, it's been hard starting over while staying in my apartment most of each day. I don't have any co working spaces in my area, but I joined a pottery class, and it has been an amazing way to casually meet people and be creative! Thank you for the great vids and positive energy! ❤
Been feeling this same way! Super excited to try and implement more divide in my work and daily life! 💕 New subscriber!
Love your videos
I absolutely love your videos! Looking forward to more - they're a joy!
human (and strangers) connections are so important! loved the montage :)
I couldn't agree more!
How crazy is it that too much of a good thing is not good anymore? like.. the sweatpants, the "" extra "" time that working from home allows you to have (but not really), and so on. Its so cool to have balance, isnt it?
Loved this: “Eventlessness has no posts to drape duration on. From nothing to nothing is no time at all.” ― John Steinbeck
I have a mixed wfh and in office week and I do enjoy the time I save on wfh days but (to my surprise) it has been really nice to have set work hours and connect with others in my field on in office days. I also had to relearn that there are just come days that are less productive in either setting and that can be ok too. Loved the video!
Great video, Makari. Looks like the $200 per month for a workspace is a worthwhile business expense. I’m a people person so need social interaction to energize and generate creativity. Love the Steinbeck quote and “The Bear” reference!
hi Makari! I’ve really enjoyed your videos and content, and I thought I’d finally drop a comment! watching your videos has brought me joy 😊, so I hope you’ll receive and enjoy the appreciation for your content that you definitely deserve! scientifically, that serotonin-type of joy (as opposed to the common dopamine that videos can give). I know you smile big here, but I hope you also take the time for yourself, breathe, and take care of yourself at all the times that you need it! Thanks and have a wonderful day! =)!
Hey Makari, really like your channel and think you're really really good at this :) I used to have a job in a pretty toxic work environment. I am certain it damaged my mental health going there all the time and dealing with my horrible boss and all the other anxious stressed out workers. If morale is good it's nice to see your co-workers (like another job that i had), if not, it's kind of terrible.
Hey thanks Mima, I appreciate it. And I'm with you! WFH has saved me from seeing a toxic boss everyday so I get where you're coming from
Glad you found a balance. I have always had to enforce boundaries. I have a separate room in the house so I can close the door and be done. 👍
I just found your channel a couple weeks ago and need to tell you how much I love and appreciate your videos. I'm also a video creator and I find your style and storytelling so fun and inspiring. Thanks for all the great videos!
Hey thank you!! I really appreciate it :)
I just discovered your channel and I love your content! I know it must take a LOT of time to film and edit them to the quality you do, so just letting you know it's not unnoticed! You're killing it and I see a big subscriber count for your future ❤
Hey thanks Lucy :') I really appreciate this
Fascinating.I'm always interested in these discussions. I work for a company where we have to spend 40 per cent in office ie for me thats 2 days a week and I find it less productive due to noise, very expensive in fares and food and MORE isolating . We have company codes and behaviours where we are meant to be welcoming, kind, friendly and inclusive but nobody speaks to you or each other so you are just sitting at your desk in silence doing your work by yourself which you would be doing at home anyway
Booked a trial day at a nearby coworking space in a couple days and gonna head to the library to work tomorrow. Been feeling incredibly low WFH with stretches of days where I never even leave the house and just work nonstop, so this was really inspiring! Gave me the kick I needed to try something new so thank you :)
Cool!! Her vids are so motivating in so many ways!
You are a genuine joy to watch! I had more to say, but was struggling to string the words together haha. I'll leave it at this for now and just wanted to say this video helped me, so thank you :)
Hey thanks Claire! :) I really appreciate it and I'm happy to have helped in some way!
This video changed my perspective completely! I don’t have a job currently where I have the option to work from home but I’ve noticed at school if I do studying there or in a cafe I always feel so much more productive!!
Also where do you get your jeans from? They’re always so cute 😁
Great video, and I really appreciate the disclaimers. I know I hate going into the office because it's more than an hour each way, but I feel so much better if I can walk out of the house and go work in a nearby coffee shop or the library for the day when I'm working for home, and I hope we see more of these community work shares around so they become a little less pricey
Agreed! The price is such a doozy
Another great video bud! I wholeheartedly agree, working in the office is great only because of the people, I started a new corporate job that requires 5 days a week in office - I love the work, I love having time away from being at home and in my sweatpants all the time (they go straight on when Im back), I love the whole culture and everyone just wants to help everyone all the time. BUUUT the commute is killing me - after two years of being in control of my time, its only 1.5hrs a day but if you think about it - that's basically a whole extra work day. I wish teleportation existed, then it would be perfect.
Anyway, you do you! Im glad you've found a way to make work more meaningful and fun for yourself. :)
Thank you for your service!
Those dang commutes!
I always go to one of the public university libary around my city. It`s kinda like a co-working space. Lots of people just focusing on their own work makes me sooooo much more productive myself. In 2 hours there I get as much done as in 2 days working from home. Also the university libary I go to here in Germany is free. You can just walk in.
You put a lot of hard work in each of your videos and it shows ! The content and production quality is too good ! It's like watching an episode of a web series... Keep making these lovely videos :) More power to you :)
I’ve been hybrid for a while, but just started being fully remote. So I might just see it through rose colored glasses. But not having a commute, and not being forced to drive ever, is enough for me always choose working from home even if it is somewhat isolating. Maybe if I could walk/bike to work I would be more open to going into an office. But that’s sadly not really possible where I live 😢 congrats on finding something that works for you!!!🎉
I love how considerate you are even when you are talking about your current life style and choices. It feels so inclusive! Also once again I feel motivated to take actions to reach my goals thanks to you 💖
Awe, thanks for describing my content as "inclusive". I really appreciate that
Dude, I cant believe you have 36K subs already! Congrats, that's so cool! I hope your channel continues to grow, you're such an awesome content creator! Great video, like always!
Hey thanks Maria! I really appreciate it! :)
Love how you share your reflections. Shows us new perspectives and understandings… big and small … like munching too much while working from home, to the true enjoyment of sweat pants 😂, to maybe it’s not about ‘where’ one works from, but the goal of making every second count, fostering positive, collaborative relationships ❤
As a uni student (with adhd, it turns out 😅) not working from home has been revolutionary for how i feel on a daily basis.
Time doesn't feel real to me anyways (thanks, adhd time blindness) and at home I feel like i could do anything or nothing and my day has no structure. This would lead to ending my days feeling unhappy no matter what i did, and getting to work and staying at work feeling like an insurmountable task. Walking or cycling to a library, meeting up with friends for lunch and going to the gym after my work day has made me SO much happier. Plus, i live in a dorm, so geting out of my one room and establishing it as a place for guilt free rest is so much healthier for me ❤
Thank you for this video!! It felt like a little treat to savour and your content really motivates me to reflect on what makes me feel good and how i can introduce more of that into my life!😊
Hey Sarah, thanks for taking the time to leave this really lovely comment! I really appreciate it ❤️😊
"Establishing it as a place for guilt free rest" is SUCH a good note. That's exactly how I feel about my apartment now that I'm not in it 99.9% of the time.
Neurodivergent folx unite! The "time is not real" part of it is the hardest thing for me. I so understand what you are saying here.
Up until recently most of my team was in a different city, but we’ve got two new joiners where I am and, I must admit, having a set schedule where we see see each other on specific days at the office and having people to chat/work with did make it worth going. The commute is still lengthy, though!
What’s your commute time, Makari?
Thanks for the vid! Cheers
I understand the isolation part of this video - though with tough winters here and having to dig your car out of feet of snow, zero parking downtown and what you can get costs a fortune, more added expenses of making my lunch and snacks, having to wear a presentable work attire in an economy where gas, food and clothes even with my govt job I can barely afford in a one income household. I will never work from the office again! 😊❤ though for someone with your circumstances good to see how things went! I like having the choice to change up my day as I would like it to be, workouts, walks, meal prep, setting aside time for friends and family! Not to mention how happier the planet is without the emissions and humans destroying it quicker. 🌎 thanks for sharing your perspective.
I really love your personality so so much!!! Please always be this positive !!
I’m so surprised you’ve only been uploaded for a year now. It seems like you were meant to be a content creator! I would love to see you post a video about your life and journey to get where you are!
I love this for you! I also feel so isolated when I work from home for too long
I really didn't realize just how isolated I was until I changed things up😳
@@makariespe It's too easy to miss it, but great that you wanted to try something new and realised it!
I'm at university, and I think that it is good that I have to leave home most days. Otherwise I think I might forget how much I need to interact with people.
I love your videos SO SO much. Every video you create makes me want to have a more positive outlook on life, to not be afraid to try new things, and to just enjoy life. LOVE YOU, MAKARI! Keep up the great work❤️
THANK YOU for the loveliest comment ever :') I really appreciate it
I'd love to see a video on how these challenges you did actually influenced your life now after a little time. What are you still doing etc.

Thank you for bringing in perspectives.i have a disability and work from home was a blessing for me. Less pain and less holding on to a single thread. More time and energy for sports and rehabilitation. Now ,after the pandemic, I can choose and I go in 1x a week maximum for just meeting my colleagues.
I love that wfh is available to you! I really appreciate how companies are learning that its not a "one size fits all" when it comes to productivity.
This is why why I as a student love going to the library during exam season instead of working from home. It gives me some human interaction and I have a set hour at which the library closes so I better make the most of my time there. Great video!
I do think it's so particular to the person! I love working from home, and I'd have such a hard time going back to the office. I like being able to play music and podcasts without having to wear headphones all day, getting to take breaks to do yoga and go for a daily walk, and getting to hang out with my dogs all day! I'm also so easily distracted in a social environment: I'll chat all day instead of getting work done.
I also have a designated working space (it's in the corner of the kitchen, but that counts!) and times, so I feel like my work day is a separate thing from my off time.
I think I accidentally found a new favorite CZcams vlogger, love you already!
It really is so dependent on the person, their family, their health, and the work they are doing. I have been considering a coworking space as well, and the cost feels so big! But the lack of balance is really hard, especially when you are your own boss. Major kudos to you for being able to roll out of bed at 9 and get in the office chair. Some days I can, and other days I think time isn't real and I can do anything whenever I want so I should just sleep in, or play with the cat, or talk to my mom, etc.
I have 2 kids and when they were younger and the big VID hit, there is no way I could have stayed in an office while they were schooling virtually and we were all in a mental health crisis.
Now, even as an introvert, I miss my commute (no more audiobook/podcast time while driving) and I miss having a space that was outside of my control (which I didn't realize until I was typing that sentence...). Like - and office has one purpose - you go there to get work done. My home has 500 purposes.
And yes, I totally relate to the snacking.
I think you've convinced me! And yeah, no I do not want to be REQUIRED to go to an office. A coworking space is way more ideal than one building where everyone works in the same company.
Sorry for the novel. I'm a new, huge fan.
Personally for me, working from home was fun during COVID as I got to stay with my family, but then we started to move back working in a hybrid model, currently going in 3 days to office & 2 days wfh.
It has it's challenges about the commute time, packing lunch, not being able to do home chores in b/w, colleagues bugging you more often but it is extremely fun as well.
I'm definitely in the WFH camp. I don't dislike being in an office, but for my life, I spend far less time commuting and spending money on fuel when I can work from home 100% of the time. And collaboration with colleagues is the same either way. My assessment of the matter is, there should be the option of both, and if you're more productive doing one over the other, then that should be what is available to you. Thanks for this ride along, it was interesting to see and fun to watch!
another perspective to raise about wfh is that it doesn't have to be isolating if you "fill your cup" elsewhere. I regularly see friends, go for walks throughout the day, walk to get groceries at least 1-2x per week and say hi to neighbors along the way, train with my run club at least 1-2x per week etc. on breaks during or after my wfh session each day.
your 8 hours of working can happen wherever and you can still find social time that is YOUR choice outside of that. not having to use most of my social battery on work interactions (since it's easier for me to do them online) freed up some for other activities I love and wish I could do more when I worked in person.
all that to say, wfh doesn't have to be isolating if you're intentional about your free time throughout the day or week 😊
"I can do hard things" has changed my life!!! 💪🧬💪 Its my phone's lock screen now and it had changed my life's perspective. I don't care if you are the one to originate it it is seeing you say it in these videos that has influenced me so deeply. I'm glad for your content and I wish you all the best in your CZcams endeavors! We can all do hard things 🎉👏
I didn't even know I said it so much! This makes me so happy to hear.
Very interesting video, never really thought about it, fun to watch and your personality is really lovely Makari (:
Recently been watching your videos and they're so great! You have a lovely on screen presence. Keep it up!
(Also was that a cheeky bit of Khruangbin in there or just something similar??)
Firstly, you are so positive and happy, its totally awkward feeling to me as being traumatized in the childhood pretty bad but I enjoy seeing you being happy, even if I dont understand it.
Secondly, you look totally detached from reality to me, talking about working with people. I got only bad experiences, intrigues, mobbing, gaslighting and other stuff going on. There are a lot of examples here on youtube what Im talking about.
Happy to see your channel growing! Can‘t decide between running, stretching, or productively working from an office ❤️
Hey thanks! And I love it 😂
I've worked the same job since the shut down. And the simple truth is that I would've been fired or quit by now if I had to start working in an office 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
Private office, short commute, flexible hours, more money, free meals... None of it would matter.
Great video ❤ for me balance is key - 2 days in the office and 3 at home are ideal for me. And I do think there is a pretty big difference between renting a co-working space and working in an office of your company. Many of the things I don’t like about going to the office, would not apply in a co-working. E.g: people approaching you with random requests, feeling like your boss is monitoring your progress, having to eat lunch with people you don’t like etc.
why are you so awesome?
been thinking about going to a coworking space, thanks for the nudge :)
😂 Thanks Kote.
And yay! Let me know what you think if you do do it :)
07:40 couldn't agree more! As a freelance working mainly from home, I ended up filling my evenings and weekends with activities and classes instead of going to workspaces or agencies. Which might have been an unconscious coping mechanism from my body to make me feel like I am actually living something during my days. Otherwise, it gets quickly blend
10000%!
Also - I have a question for you on instagram. Let me know what you think 😆
Before Covid I was working from home for a year or so and as an introvert I didn’t like it, it felt so lonely. So I can definitely relate. I ended up changing jobs. That being said now I have 2 kids and so much busier, I think I would like working from home more again.
I sometimes dream of calling my boss and saying “I’ll be working from home today.” 😊
I work as a housekeeper at a psychiatric centre (public health care) here in Norway and I went to work every day during the pandemic, I think it really helped make that time a lot less strange and difficult. Don’t get me wrong, it was stressful and often emotionally (and physically!) draining but I really felt like it brought some sense of normalcy during that awful time.
WFH professional here! 👋🏽I try to work from the library or a coffee shop once a week.
My 1st job was totally remote. Eventhough we had meetings (Online Interactions per say) , I never was productiv, there was no structure. Flexibility in work timing is good but when everyone in the team wants to be flexible as they wish, that's a red flag😂. We don't have coworking spaces where I live.I love working from home now and then but not all the time as a remote worker. Really waiting for your notion tour🎉
Love seeing all the positivity in the comments. Like most, I’m also pretty new to the channel and am really enjoying your work so far!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
love the content!!!!
This Is a really interesting perspective.. Soo my job is hybrid however I report to our eastern division but I live in the West. The projects I’m managing right now are for the East so I literally work 6-6:30 am to 3-3:30 pm so for me, mostly working from home makes sense. I do miss the social interaction but I’m waaay more productive at home than I was in the office. I also renovated my home office space and it’s waaaaay better than my workplace office lol.. that helps. I also can’t stand most of the people in my office (long story here, my boss is in the east..) different strokes for different folks I guess!
Second time I watch one of your video and I think I must subscribe and this time it was already done.
As a student who work all of the year at home the rare périod where I was thinking that I had time is where I work not at home.
Congrats on finding what works for you right now! I would be interested in a follow up video to see how you feel about it in a few months when the coworking is less novel and more routine.
I totally relate to working from home turning the days into mush in terms of work-life balance. I not commuting but having zero separation is less than optimal. For me though, I think the problem could be solved with a two bedroom apartment (assuming the rent is equivalent to a coworking space) or even just coffee shops in the meantime because it's not so much social interaction as it is the lack of time pressure and off-mode. Cheers!
Hey Cindy! Honestly a 2 bedroom is the MOVE. But I will say that after doing this for a month and a half now I can't see myself going back. I'm really lucky though because the people there are just so great :)
CRISTY** Not cindy 🤦🏼♀️
@@makariespe Lol no worries! Thanks for the reply!
Hybrid work is great. For me 1-2 days remote and 3-4 days in-office per week, with the flexibility to work remote pretty much whenever I need to, works really well. It helps that the office environment I work in is really good and my commute is short.
Honestly, $200 isn’t that bad with all the benefits you seem to have from it! I work in retail, so sometimes I would like the opposite and WFH cause I talk to so many people that it gets mental exhausting. Good on you for doing hard things!! 🎉
I live like 7 minutes away from my office, but with all the traffic it can take around 20+ mins to get to and from work. And they have us on a hybrid schedule so it’s so annoying working some days at home and some in the office. I have to get all my things ready the night before. I have to be in the office by 7am so I don’t have time to get to work out, or make breakfast etc. ALSO, for my job, I’m having to deal with customer info so I can’t just go to a co-working space whenever I want. I’m just limited to my apartment.
I definitely notice that breaking the day up into recognizable segments, makes the days feel way longer, but not in a bad way, more like I'm fully experiencing my day if that makes sense. I find that in order to feel like I've actually experienced the full day, I need "book-ends", aka sort of time-stamps, to mark the passage.
Another aspect for me is that I feel like I have no time for things, if each day is sort of "fit it in" without those time-stamps. My day is 16 hours long no matter what, but having a clear time free, like the after work example you gave, suddenly I feel like I have more time. And after doing that thing, I may find I have an hour before bed, to do house chores or something.
Luckily, I do work from home, but my hours are set for the most part, so my work day doesn't feel like it's 16 hours long. I know I need to get stuff done in that time, so I'm focused on it, and rarely work outside of those hours, unless I can't avoid it.
Gimme that wrap recipe! ❤ I needz more work foods!
Glad that worked out well for you.
I graduated grad school in 2020 and so my first job was fully remote for two years. As the office opened back up, I found myself naturally going in every day. I love getting to leave my computer at work and easily meet people for dinner after the day. Meeting new people and small talk and having questions answered in person made a WORLD of difference to me. Now I am an extrovert so I kind of *need* to be around people to not turn into a pile of goo but I can't imagine having to work from home again. I totally understand why people don't like working in an office but I do think human interaction and interacting with the community/society you live in are important and working in an office is a very easy way for me to do it.
i love working from home. making my own food, exercising during the day, nicer setup. it's definitely nice to have some social interaction with workmates though.. once every couple of weeks is plenty
This was such a good vlog!
I think this is very personality dependent too. If you thrive on interactions with other people, it's a good thing. If you're an introvert, then working from home is a dream.
And if there are any companies reading these comments, I can say as someone who went from in office to working at home, that it seems people take less "sick" days too. I know I, for one, work more while "at" work, then when I was at the office. (No more people coming to your desk wasting time, taking long lunch breaks, etc. etc.)
Anyway great video as always!
100%
And thank you!
i honestly love Your videoes! coming back for more, and subscribing :D
3:53 "ahhh" 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for noticing Abigail :')
I love the separation of home and work for me. But I have a semi-private office, in that I have my own office space and a door I can close and be alone at work. While I don’t like the commute, and would love to live closer and bike or walk to work, I do enjoy being in the office. It works for me but it’s not for everybody and that’s ok. 🤷🏽♀️
I worked from home for years (even Pre covid) and now I'm in and office and I'm happier there.
That's said, I'm in a different time in my life now. Working from home was amazing when I needed it. We just need different things at different times. Neither is better or worse, just different.
Life phases is such a great point
I personally love working from home because I have my record collection to listen to and my dogs to keep my company. I make an intentional effort to spend a couple of hours at a coffee shop to get out of the house and invite a friend a couple of times a week to stay social. Loved this video, great work!!
Hey Josh! So smart to invite a friend :) I always said I'd do it but never did
Thing is you work a lot at home. Having the separate space to work from home is a big thing, I had my setup in my bedroom, as you did, but now I can have a space to do it in a separate room.
And I could eventually go to a cafe or something to be out of the space.
But the main thing is I DON'T HAVE TO WORK ALL THE TIME BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE TO GO HOME.
I prefer going into the office, but I also have the best of both worlds by having my office only 2 miles away. Going home for lunch everyday is great. I'd probably hate going to the office if I had a long commute.
I've been working from home for going on 4 years now and I have and continue to have a love/hate relationship with it. Love not having a commute. Love having access to my kitchen during the day. Love the flexibility with my time. I used to have to take the day off if I needed to meet a repair person, now I'm here. I sometimes go on my run during my lunch hour. But the hate part-- I feel so isolated, I feel so removed from the mission of the org, and feel borderline depressed about work all of the time. All the fun things about my job disappeared when they sent us home, just leaving the day to day grind. I know that's not everyone's experience and I certainly am not someone who lives to work-- but it really feels frustrating to have to spend this much of my day on something that feels so draining and unfun. It looks like my organization is moving to a hybrid style (2 days in office, 3 days at home) and I thin it might actually be very good for me!
I hope you enjoyed it!! :) I'm with you on the flexibility front. Flexibility is KEY.
And I'm sorry to hear about all of the hate parts. I've felt the same way at other jobs in the past and it's a really hard place to be in. I'm really hoping the new hybrid style improves things for you.
On nice days I'll take my yoga mat, lap desk, and computer outside and work in my backyard - absolute game-changer. I know that's not feasible for everyone, but even camping out at the library can be a nice change of pace (although I'll admit, my favorite workspace ever was grading midterms on a beachside balcony at Margaritaville 😅)
Well thats lovely!!
I have a long commute and a dog, for those two reasons I like to have a hybrid mode (can't be full remote with my company anyway haha)
However I had thought for a long time that I would prefer to be fully remote but I tend to isolate myself too much when I do this + I often have anxiety/ocd tendencies the more I am on my own, which can literally destroy me. I also resent working more from home than at the office
I have 2.5 days each week where i can work from home (so I chose to be home 2 to 3 days a week) , sometimes I have to go to the office more because of specific needs but its pretty good. Hybrid is great way if you have a commute and I can have more time with my dog too :)
