I got a great deal for this game for only $15.. sadly no instructional manual or any of the bonuses (oh well great deal for a used copy with little scratches).
I was on a SMT withdrawal from my mass P4 playing.. and since I don't have Nocturne (I thought of starting over and doing things the right way since I know how SMT games are played now) I looked for DDS1 and found it.
Plus I heard it was much easier than Nocturne (but harder than Persona)
Big credit to Blaise9 for tempting me in getting this (yes I saw a bunch of his boss videos for this game).
Key points for me playing though:
- FAQ slightly used (to learn controls, basis of game and stuff, due to lack of instructional manual)
- FAQ walkthrough slightly used (for the annoying Nocturne-like dungeons)
- Tactics Known (got spoiled from watching "some" of Blaise9's boss videos)
I love the idea of Blaize9's maxing Magic in beginning (I want to use the MC as a nuker).. so I will probably do that then max VIT & AGI afterwards.
So anyways:

DDS1 should last me until I want to play any other games (like SO4 extras or etc)... until my next big game is out.. Cross Edge (assuming NIS didn't do a screwup like they did on AT2).

Lol. I bought every single PS2 SMT game back 2 years ago. I got them for 20 bucks a game. Paid 100 for smt: dds dds2 nocturne raidou 1 and raidou 2.
Would it have been cheaper if I bought them online?

Please share this message with other DDS fans. The novels Quantum Digital Devil Saga will be translated and released to the states. If we see more of them depends how well the first volume fares. For those who don't know. The novels are practically how DDS story was originally meant to be.
ay never heard of them and just recently started playing the games should i try and read the novels if they were translated or just keep playing the games?
You can check the novels another time, you'll do just fine with the games. They're meant to be self-sufficient.

only one of the novels is currently translated though, as the translator wasn't contacted again for more projects regarding the books... it's sad

one thing i love about atlus is their music openings, i love the feeling of opening a game and hearing a whole new genre everytime

They're both $10 for the PS3 in the store, I think that's as close as you're gonna get. I wish they'd release a PC port, I REALLY miss the series, but not enough to buy a PS3... :(

Tips:
1) Yes to Magic. Elemental Spells can be boosted and amped, so they do more damage. As an example, final boss, Heat (specs Str) was doing 600 damage Executioner, single target. Gale (specs balanced) was doing 700 damage with a Maziodyne, all target.
2) Devour is keyed to Vitality, so don't neglect it.
3) Buy only what you need, don't rely on too many items. Money is rare and important that you need to save as much as you get.
4) Get Ingest Mana, then Chakra Walk as soon as you see them.

8) Mantra points are actually pretty plentiful if you spend a little time grinding and devouring as many targets as possible. What's more limiting is the amount of money, but it's not too bad for each character to specialize in two elements at least. (Default Element + Opposite Element). If you're willing to grind, you can potentially level up several elements worth of mantras (for example, Gale had Maziodyne, Maragidyne, Mazandyne, and the final Almighty mantras without much work).

To find Field Hunt u have to go to a certain area on every dungeon.
To get an enemy frightened, u have to hit it's weakness, making hunt skills more effective(gives more damage) when frightened.
Well AP Divide and Mutual Karma takes time to obtain those skills and those will be handy for non-reserves(that are not choosed to be in battle).

Not meaning to flatter you but thanks to you I enjoy both Persona 3 & 4! I been trying to get myself interested in the other SMT games that I can obtain like Nocturne or Digital Devil Saga so it would be nice if I can see a walkthrough or gameplay of either series before I can purchase them!

These two games were a couple of Atlus's best ever. They really need to do a remaster or something. I have friends that need to play it.

Better than persona 3 too. Honestly from a standpoint of having no nostalgia bias towards persona 3, 4, and 5, persona 3 is my least favorite. I just didn't enjoy the gameplay parts of it like I did with the others and I didn't really like the characters as much. I'd say I enjoyed dds much more than persona 3. I liked the characters and the story much more.

YAY!!! LL you're the best.
tip: Field hunt: under time limit, keep on slicing purple things until u find a Ara Mitama, hit it and engaged in a battle. Ara Mitamas are weak against ice, if one is frightened use the hunt skill (devour , comsume) to gain a huge atma points to master matamaga easily so u can learn new skills.
Also make sure u party members have AP divide auto skill so they all gain Atma points and have mutual karma auto skill so they level up without being in battle.
Yay!!! Because these games are full of win!
Oh, forgot a last tip.
8) When choosing an element a character should learn, try to learn an element that contains that character's weakness. For example, Serph is weak to Fire, so Serph should learn Fire Mantras. Towards the end of the games, Elemental Mantras will give a corresponding Resist, which will allow you to negate a character's weakness. Very important on later bosses.

@Corehoofify Don't worry, this spoiler is kinda an optional one. Depending on your choices you can stop it. And it won't be obvious like "Save or Don't save" either. So watch your choices! And about the "origins" of the characters, you get more of a spoiler alert just by watching the intro scene of the second game. So no worries!

Hmm, gameplay-wise and graphics-wise. It's very similar, although the gameplay is A LOT more forgiving. Do not take that to mean easier. However, it's probably more similar to a mainstream RPG, since fusion isn't used, but rather customization is based on mantra (similar to the magatama system from Nocturne, but they don't affect stats/resistances, but you keep all skills you learn and can assign them anytime)

5) Every party member should know at least two Ma~ spells for the elements and corresponding boosts/amps, if possible. This will become a little hard towards the end of the game, but it's a good goal.
6) You will grind. Get used to it.
7) Carry Dis-Aches and/or learn Iron Stomach quickly. Ache is horribly ridiculously annoying, but Iron Stomach may not be worth a Skill Slot.
Anyway, it's been a while since I played DDS, so my tips may be a little outdated. It's a fun game though ^^.
One day a DDS anime would be amazing, its been sooo long, and Persona got anime adaptations, so wheres the love for Nocturne, DDS, and some others?!
