What Use Is The Female Orgasm? - David Puts

  • David Puts is a Professor of Anthropology at Penn State whose research focuses on the evolution and development of human sexuality and sex differences.
Apparently women orgasm. Why they do it however, has been a mystery for a long time. They don't need to in order to get pregnant. And sometimes they don't do it at all, for ages. So what use is the female orgasm, and what predicts the sort of partner who'll make it happen?
Expect to learn if the female orgasm is just a gatekeeper for oxytocin, whether more dominant male faces predicted earlier orgasm, why men competed for women through contests rather than sexual selection, how male-male aggression, not female selection drove the evolved differences between men and women, whether you can tell a person's personality from their voice pitch and much more...

Could it be that it is a primal incentive to keep wanting sex, as this would produce more offspring? Considering the high infant mortality rate before modernity, mating as often as possible to produce as many viable descendants to continue the species. Seems like a good evolutionary way of encouraging mating.
    Dunno, just a thought.

This .... the orgasm is addictive and so pleasurable for the sole purpose to encourage a human being to seek out that pleasure to stimulate their nervous system again and again. The Orgasm is pleasurable for the precise reason of encouraging copulation and thus as a consequence the potential likelihood to conceive offspring and pass on and spread your genetic DNA. It is an instinctual survival mechanism to help perpetuate the species.

I don't think there's another top rated, highly entertaining podcast that has featured this much quality content about evolution and evolutionary psychology. Chris Williamson hits it out of the park once again with another fantastic guest choice. If you are a person who is getting your content exclusively from things like BuzzFeed, vanity Fair, people magazine etc you are missing out. It's hard to put into words the extent to which we have become so cordoned off into our own unique entertainment bubbles. On a related note, I wonder how this might affect our evolution moving into the future?

  • @dinos9607

What a fantastic conversation. Most excellent at the part around 47:00 minute where Chris mentions a research paper which was actually D. Puts' one, in which they studied which is the best predictor of reproductive success (i.e. a term today implying who will have the most sexual opportunities, not necessarily the most kids). On the one side, female sexual selection and on the other male dominance. So they showed a number of photos of men to groups of men and women, photos of men who were actually known to them. Women had to rate the men in the photos by order of attractiveness, i.e. from the most sexy down to the least sexy. Men had to order the very same men by order of who seemed to them being more assertive, more dominant, more alpha, down to the least dominant, most beta. By all means while there could be some overlap, the men in the photos were categorised different and their positions in the two separate orders were different in spite of whatever random overlap. To put in more explicit terms, out of the 100 photos and on a scale of top-100 to bottom 0, a man that could be ranked say 95 on attractiveness scale by women could had been ranked as 62 on dominance scale by men and vice versa. So after one year the researchers gather up the men in the photos and asked them of their... sexual escapades and what they found out is that the men's dominance hierarchy was a better predictor of male sexual success than the female selection predictor.... i.e. even if it was the women doing the sexual selection, it was eventually the male position in the dominance hierarchy that played a higher role than the initial sexual attraction that women may feel towards the image of a man.
That was not hard to guess. For years I have been claiming that female sexual selection played a far lower role than so many in the manosphere had been claiming - it was the male contest for dominance which played a far higher role. And note that this experiment was done in an era of complete sexual liberation and female emancipation so one would expect that male competition for dominance would had played a lower role, but no.... women are tuned to dominance by instinct. In the photos they could judge only judge the outer appearance, but in practice when they meet men, they see them how they behave and how others behave towards them, and thus they select differently from when they have to select among photos of men. But when we extrapolate to past times, we do the simple maths and deduct the fact that 80% of the "game" was all about dominance. Dominance against neighbouring enemy tribes but then also dominance over the males of the tribe within.

I guess what confuses me about them is that penetration isn’t what generally causes them for women. The clitoris seems very poorly placed if that’s the goal. In fact, it seems like women weren’t designed to have an orgasm while actually having sex. Which makes it all the more baffling to me.

You have to wonder what the evolutionary trajectory is on women who experience penetrative orgasms, if the population is growing or shrinking, and whether clitoral orgasms are vestigial.
My theory is that clitoral orgasm could be a neurological adaptation. Women who orgasmed via the men who were smart and dexterous enough to bring them to orgasm would self-select those same men and spread more progeny.

Reproductive success would be less likely and birth rates would be consistently low. Especially because reproduction outside of deliberate female choice would be rape. Is it so out there to imagine that the female orgasm exists to encourage women to have sex and increase the chances of continuing the species?

They may even prefer it to penetration with males. This unites the women and they are actually matriarchal. The female mothers even select which women can breed with their sons.
Chimps are similar but have regular size clits. More Males engage in homosexuality. They are big bromances and cohorts. This leads to the Alpha males having a group of male followers. The Alpha may give permission to their favorite brothers to be with the women of his group. They are more patriarchal. The size of males and females have greater disparity.

When paternity is uncertain, it serves all males in the tribe to want to protect and provide for the offspring (in contrast to Lions, for example, in which the paternity IS certain as the dominant male has exclusive access to the harem...and all new dominant males kill the small offspring of the previous dominant male). I had an idea, I was wondering if the apparent sexyness of languages conferred a strategic advantage. I thought was Latin sexy and did it confer a strategic competitive advantage for the Romans and their successors the French and Spanish.

    • @dinos9607
      @dinos9607 Před 7 měsíci

It would be extremely difficult to establish that somehow the Latin language conferred Romans any competitive advantage in military terms, even more so when in Antiquity, the Romans themselves admitted that Greek was a far better sounding language than Latin. But Greeks too, who took so much pride in their language, never claimed that the language somehow gave them a military advantage. When people today mention Romance languages as better sounding they do so for two reasons : 1) Romance language, just like Greek, have alternating consonants and vowels and these tend to make for clear-sounding pleasant to the ear languages. 2) Romance languages are, in the modern era, related to summer holidays and good times so they create a pleasant, warm feeling when heard. But other than that, they do not necessarily give any visible advantage. It has more to do with culture-related reasons than the language itself. You see this for example with the English accent, i.e. the many different accents of English as spoken in the UK. It makes no difference outside the UK, e.g. in the rest of Europe but in USA, Canada and Australia it makes a noticeable difference since UK English accents (even the... Cockney one, LOL!) are perceived as more sexy, and more "upmarket", than US, Canadian and Australian ones. Which the British find hilarious, especially when they hear some Cockney man spitting out bars and Americans think he is some professor. LOL!

It's really rare for a woman to achieve an orgasm with a man... which it's ironic considering that women are multi orgasmic...Women can get off easily through masturbation...the key is that sex is a really stressful activity for women...from preparation (anti conception measures to pregnancy expectations) to the actual act (anxiety, fear, guilt) for a woman it's easier to be relaxed by herself than with a male partner. The key for being s good lover is to help her to relax... it's not easy and depending on the circumstances not always possible...As someone with chronic anxiety I fully understand the frustration they must feel with men and with themselves. I can't enjoy sex either because all I have in the back of my head are negative thoughts.

Chris, I warmly, politely and cordially suggest that you invite a woman scientist or researcher to talk about any women's sexualiy topic. Especially when you address the point of it (or any parts of it). 🙏
There's more to women's orgasm (or female orgasm, for the gender activists) than a biological function. There's emotional discharge in orgasm, hormonal balancing, there's the potential of fulfillment. With awareness and consciouness, comes this perspective on orgasm. For both men and women, might I add.
There's been a slew of people (in history) castrating women's sexuality. In religion, society, family. In present day, many-a-woman struggle with expression and orgasm. I'm not refering to the boss babes / bitches, but to the more sensitive ones.
Years of sexual suppression has done a huge number on women's expression. Lack of experiencing orgasm is one common result. Among others. And it is frustrating for many. This topic is brought up in coaching often.
In this context, two men analyzing publicly the point of women's orgasm... To put it diplomatically, it most likely won't sit well with many women.
Please consider inviting a woman scientist next time. 🙏🙏

This 💯 I’m sure it’s an interesting episode, I’ll gladly watch, but I second the sentiment. It’s such a nuanced topic that would so benefit from a first hand experience of a woman! But generally the whole orgasm gap worldwide btw men/women statistically is so upsetting🥺. When in fact a lot of the time women’s orgasms are meant to be stronger, more varied, longer and more likely to be multiple. All women should feel comfortable enough with their bodies to explore and enjoy them. Just goes to show that societal aspects play a large role in this (I mean some societies still routinely practice FGM to prevent female pleasure🥲…) and that we still have a long way to go, but I’m hopeful that it’s getting better

It would make for a good video that’s it. I enjoyed the video myself, as I’m sure many women. In fact Chris references a personal experience of this phenomenon by a trans person he spoke with previously in a video, which I found very interesting (anecdotal ofc, but still corroborating the studies about the differences). RE: The indicators of dominance over other men : beards, deep voice etc that have more affect on men than women. Couldn't it simply be the obvious? For cavemen to breed with a cavewomen all he had to do was dominate the other men, and keep them at bay? And it's not a factor of getting a.woman to be more aroused by the caveman and willingly pick the more masculine man. The women simply didn't get a choice in the matter of sex. With the other cavemen cowered by the dominant male, she had no protection to stop sex.. She engaged in sex, or suffered the consequences.
We've all seen countless nature documentaries about stags, lions, gorillas. The male that breeds is the one that scares off or kills the other males, its not about the males taking turns to hitting-on the females and each male waits his turn to see which one she picks.

Remnant of the old house may be there but it’s no longer serving a major function. Perhaps the female orgasm was just an earlier iteration of gene replication and somehow nature found that it was too hard 😅. And opted for the male orgasm which is way too easy to stain 🎉. I mean you just gotta rub it a bit. Not every function in us has to have had a major function. Perhaps it’s also that when something experience intense rubbing(physical and mental friction) it secretes? And the male is just simply an easier way to achieve it because of its rod-like nature?

They squeeze eveything together, so the ejaculation optimally (if the guy isn't to short) will more or less be shot right against the opening of the uterus, forcing (some of) the sperm into it. That's just a couple of physical pros of her having one. For the guy, the longer he keeps her "happy" the more time for her to "flush out" the last guys genes, and for they current guys sperm pump to pump it out to (look it up - it's from a scientific series I saw 20 years ago, which also talked about "the sperm war" going on in her. And if she has one/many, she will become more attachted to the guy, and he might feel inclined to hang around, resulting in her offspring having better chances of survival - ergo - female orgasms are possible, because they are good for our selfish genes.

If a woman grows up in a loving home, with a great/trusting relationship with her father and brothers, sees and trusts their masculinity and sees her father treating her mom well and her mom responding to it in a reseporcating and positive way.
She knows what the standard of behaviour is expected for her community and they hold her accountable.
If she suffers no childhood trauma and is not body shamed and judged on her beauty as he's starts her adolescents (wears a hijab).
Often for women their first time can be full of trauma and a bad experience. So too, having relationships out side of a loving, committed relationship (marriage) can have negative effects. So don't sleep around.
