- Learning grammar has been a part of your English studies since the beginning. Now, we’ll look at grammar as a tool for controlling syntax.
What is syntax? The arrangement of words, clauses, and phrases in a sentence in a way that delivers a clear message.
In other words, we need to learn how to control sentences such that we can deliver the same message in a variety of ways to serve different purposes. For example, we can use different clauses and phrases, make different word choices and use different forms of words, make strategic use of punctuation to emphasize or add pauses, and so on.
This video is an introduction to Grammar & Syntax. It outlines the uses of syntax and the benefits of mastering it.

Hello Teacher, how to get your vocabulary course?
Hi Adam, you're one of the English teachers I follow on youtube. Thank you. Can I ask, how to modify abstract nouns in a sentence? To make my question clear, here is my example sentence:
Since empathy plays a major role in The Star, it's not surprising if readers took that (referring to empathy) as the most memorable lesson in the book.
Is using "that" correct, was it not misplaced modifier?
Thank you very much.
I made a video about this, but to review, I would use 'it' instead of 'that'. Also, as long as there is no other noun that can be mistaken as the word being referred to, then it's not a misplaced pronoun (not modifier in this case,). Also, use 'that' as the independent clause conjunction instead of 'if', or ' it would not be surprising if....'
