I feel like before a single game is allowed to release on full dive tech (whatever century that'll come out in), there are gonna be a million regulations passed around the world to ensure it's all but impossible for something like the SAO incident to happen. No way people in real life would take that kind of technology nearly as lightly as people in the SAO universe did. Once the technology comes out, there's gonna be so much government protection that using it will be very safe... I hope...
As a student of game design and development and a SAO lover I can tell that, in fact, the game sword art online would need a lot of redesigns. The menus are just lists after lists of nested lists and are very time consuming to navigate. A game like this would need a normal inventory such as the one on Minecraft/Rust (normal square slots showing all the items instead of only 5 at a time), or... maybe one like the one used in actual MMO RPG games. Also, the fact that a player can access a random OverPowered skill by doing something and being the only one to know it is like... well, if you are not that guy, you are screwed. Also, the only class available on the game is like using a weapon and that is it, nothing like walls (well, there are "wall" players in the game, the only difference is that the normal player, the DPS (damage per second oriented player) tries to avoid damage and the walls just stop it with a shield) There should be healers or at least 3 freaking classes so that it makes sense having a team. Remember, we are in a game where the XP and loot are spread between the players of a team instead of giving all the XP to all of them so that the only way to get good (aka overpowered level with exponential statistics system for some reason) is to play solo, farm alone and avoid being close to other people all the time. Teamwork makes the dream work. To be honest, SAO is one of my favorite concepts but the writer... just does not know how to write and the thing that there's a game all the time there is not because the story needed it, but because... it would attract a lot of people by saying "Hey, look, this is this OP kid that plays this unbalanced game and if you die there you die in the real life. Also, there are those waifus and the other two guys that need the help of this kid at some point, learn something and then they just become friends of the kid and his videogame girlfriend, never to change again or to grow, they just make it look like this solo player has people orbiting him all the time making it look like he has friends that count on him because he was a hero that one time with each of them". And also "There's this other game where there are a lot of factions, the kid wants to save his videogame girlfriend while she does absolutely nothing but being the prey of the sexual desires of the writer while presenting the horrifying scenes as erotic and good for some reason, so let's all enjoy those as weebs instead of trying to make the point that the bad guy is a degenerated man that is crazy, while the reader/viewer is NOT A FREAKING PERVERT AS WELL THAT WOULD ENJOY THAT KIND OF CONTENT such as tentacle hentai and raping on the face of the main protagonist". It just makes little sense the way some scenes or concepts and details are depicted and would be a better story (and game) if those aspects were reviewed and redesigned.
Half of animes are just like that, I think they are just what japanese people like. For that reason, I like few many animes: 1.- Death Note, Mirai Nikki and Baki 2.- Attack On Titan, Parasite, Dragon Ball and Naruto. 3.- King's Game, Assasination Classroom, To Love Ru (I won't watch the last 3 again, and I love the first 3 ones)

@Rilind Salihu for it to be full dive they will have to make a way to connect the game data to the players mind then it will have to be linked to and be able to change the sub-couscous's dream state and access the emotional parts of our brain and put the player into a 'lucid' state. After that, they would need a way for the player to connect to the nerve gear to say e.g.: open menu then... ikd log out, player stats or items.... what im trying to say is that everything needs to be linked to more than one thing at once and you would also need a fast WIFI and good amount of electricity to power the gear itself. in conclusion it will be a while for a 'fill dive' version of the game to be released but as we gain more knowledge of the brain the quicker we can find ways around these problems ill keep researching and seeing what I can come up with hahaha
I would be cool with being behind the scenes. Not a lot of drama for the heroes and I can freely have fun without the worries, even with the chance of dying like in sao.
While this is the case, if they're going for something like the nerve gear its going to take a LOT of development. Not only that, but there's no way someone would set all this up and have this much advanced vr gear(remember that this was 4 years ago so this stuff was super advamced) just for a prank.

the vive is like $500 - $1000 so that would be $5000 and judging by the amount of servers, possible membership price plus games and consoles $10000 maybe if not more its just a rough estimate but I think they would shave the price a little
Man i really wish technology like this was out and fully polished, but a realistic time something like this would be possible and available around the globe would be 2070 - 2100 (which most of us would be old men and women by then) i mean the real thing is extremely complicated. Paralyze the body and give the brain the game world, it would be like dreaming you can move around without moving your body an such (honestly i don't care if it is dangerous or something I would do it without a second thought it would be like walking on the moon for the first time. Of course it would never be like the anime because "anime physics". Even then they could make it like the physics of the anime, once I had a dream where I fought this huge armored guy I had ODM gear and was flying around buildings, we had a sword clash and I did all kinds of flips and stuff so maybe they could emulate that. It's unfortunate, but you would not get the same feeling from SAO, you are aware of the outside world and would eventually require food, instead of being fed from a bag. You are not required to stay, so instead of focusing toward the goal that united everyone you would play and have fun, instead of forming deep friendships of trust like those in SAO. They put their life in each other's hands, and because of that they became a brother or a sister to those around them. VR games don't limit you, you don't see other people, you see an avatar, just another object in a world where you can clip through walls or phase through people. You would not feel pain (a negative or a positive which ever way you look at it) and you could not feel the sword in your hand, the breeze through your hair, the sharp bite on your cheeks from a never ending blizzard, or the sunlight on your face. I feel that the only way to achieve such things would be to connect something to your mind, which I don't feel comfortable with. It is truly a tradegy but we may never experience something like this. BTW I just finished SAO a few minutes ago.

No way people in real life would take that kind of technology nearly as lightly as people in the SAO universe did. Once the technology comes out, there's gonna be so much government protection that using it will be very safe... I hope...

As a student of game design and development and a SAO lover I can tell that, in fact, the game sword art online would need a lot of redesigns. The menus are just lists after lists of nested lists and are very time consuming to navigate. A game like this would need a normal inventory such as the one on Minecraft/Rust (normal square slots showing all the items instead of only 5 at a time), or... maybe one like the one used in actual MMO RPG games. Also, the fact that a player can access a random OverPowered skill by doing something and being the only one to know it is like... well, if you are not that guy, you are screwed. Also, the only class available on the game is like using a weapon and that is it, nothing like walls (well, there are "wall" players in the game, the only difference is that the normal player, the DPS (damage per second oriented player) tries to avoid damage and the walls just stop it with a shield) There should be healers or at least 3 freaking classes so that it makes sense having a team. Remember, we are in a game where the XP and loot are spread between the players of a team instead of giving all the XP to all of them so that the only way to get good (aka overpowered level with exponential statistics system for some reason) is to play solo, farm alone and avoid being close to other people all the time. Teamwork makes the dream work.
To be honest, SAO is one of my favorite concepts but the writer... just does not know how to write and the thing that there's a game all the time there is not because the story needed it, but because... it would attract a lot of people by saying "Hey, look, this is this OP kid that plays this unbalanced game and if you die there you die in the real life. Also, there are those waifus and the other two guys that need the help of this kid at some point, learn something and then they just become friends of the kid and his videogame girlfriend, never to change again or to grow, they just make it look like this solo player has people orbiting him all the time making it look like he has friends that count on him because he was a hero that one time with each of them". And also "There's this other game where there are a lot of factions, the kid wants to save his videogame girlfriend while she does absolutely nothing but being the prey of the sexual desires of the writer while presenting the horrifying scenes as erotic and good for some reason, so let's all enjoy those as weebs instead of trying to make the point that the bad guy is a degenerated man that is crazy, while the reader/viewer is NOT A FREAKING PERVERT AS WELL THAT WOULD ENJOY THAT KIND OF CONTENT such as tentacle hentai and raping on the face of the main protagonist".
It just makes little sense the way some scenes or concepts and details are depicted and would be a better story (and game) if those aspects were reviewed and redesigned.
It's gonna be nearly impossible just to replicate the Cardinal System though.
Half of animes are just like that, I think they are just what japanese people like. For that reason, I like few many animes: 1.- Death Note, Mirai Nikki and Baki 2.- Attack On Titan, Parasite, Dragon Ball and Naruto. 3.- King's Game, Assasination Classroom, To Love Ru (I won't watch the last 3 again, and I love the first 3 ones)
If people actually master full dive technology and make the graphics a bit better I would buy that even if it cost me a kidney. XD

@Rilind Salihu for it to be full dive they will have to make a way to connect the game data to the players mind then it will have to be linked to and be able to change the sub-couscous's dream state and access the emotional parts of our brain and put the player into a 'lucid' state. After that, they would need a way for the player to connect to the nerve gear to say e.g.: open menu then... ikd log out, player stats or items.... what im trying to say is that everything needs to be linked to more than one thing at once and you would also need a fast WIFI and good amount of electricity to power the gear itself. in conclusion it will be a while for a 'fill dive' version of the game to be released but as we gain more knowledge of the brain the quicker we can find ways around these problems ill keep researching and seeing what I can come up with hahaha

Man i really wish technology like this was out and fully polished, but a realistic time something like this would be possible and available around the globe would be 2070 - 2100 (which most of us would be old men and women by then) i mean the real thing is extremely complicated. Paralyze the body and give the brain the game world, it would be like dreaming you can move around without moving your body an such (honestly i don't care if it is dangerous or something I would do it without a second thought it would be like walking on the moon for the first time. Of course it would never be like the anime because "anime physics". Even then they could make it like the physics of the anime, once I had a dream where I fought this huge armored guy I had ODM gear and was flying around buildings, we had a sword clash and I did all kinds of flips and stuff so maybe they could emulate that. Its just a thought of mine don't take it 100% seriously)

It's unfortunate, but you would not get the same feeling from SAO, you are aware of the outside world and would eventually require food, instead of being fed from a bag. You are not required to stay, so instead of focusing toward the goal that united everyone you would play and have fun, instead of forming deep friendships of trust like those in SAO. They put their life in each other's hands, and because of that they became a brother or a sister to those around them. VR games don't limit you, you don't see other people, you see an avatar, just another object in a world where you can clip through walls or phase through people. You would not feel pain (a negative or a positive which ever way you look at it) and you could not feel the sword in your hand, the breeze through your hair, the sharp bite on your cheeks from a never ending blizzard, or the sunlight on your face. I feel that the only way to achieve such things would be to connect something to your mind, which I don't feel comfortable with. It is truly a tradegy but we may never experience something like this.
