- Police have dismantled tents at the Palestinian solidarity encampment in Charlottesville's University of Virginia. Acting after five days, officers moved in on the protesters' base. Meanwhile, students at the University of California in Irvine vow to stay on campus until their demands are fulfilled.
Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo reports live from New York, while Gabriel Elizondo provides updates from the University of California in Irvine.

@@albedesigns Even Israelis don’t like him. He’s only making the already horrendous relationship between Israel and Palestine worse. (Hamas, Iran, Russia, and North Korea aren’t a very “peaceful” bunch either though).
Both sides are getting severely more polarized and the only people suffering are innocents on both sides. (Not to mention that Iran is quite literally funding Hamas just enough so they kill Israelis but die themselves- so Palestinians are *not* in good hands to begin with).

At least the police aren’t acting like thugs and bashing your heads in, making you disappear from society, or making you lose your livelihoods. This is a *very* tame response. I don’t even what to think about what would happen to these people if they were in my country, for example.

A lot of the people that advocate for Palestine are also aware of what's happening in Sudan and donate, raise awareness, etc. But the pressure on the government is about Palestine because US politicians and companies are complicit in the genocide there and send billions to help Israel kill even more Palestinians, including young children. You would know that if you spent any genuine amount of time reading what protestors are demanding (university endowment divestment from complicit firms) instead of assuming that nobody cares about other problems in the world.

These protests must remain non-violent and avoid obvious anti-semitism to have the best effect. Criticism of Israel or more properly its government is not anti-semitism, nor are calls for divestiture or other legitimate measures to put pressure on the Israeli government. Such measures were put in place against South Africa to end apartheid, and they worked. While the Hamas attack of October 2023 and its hostage-taking are condemnable; the Israeli government has embarked on the immoral path of punishing the entire population of Gaza rather than just the Hamas militants. There is a credible case that Israel has violated the rules of war, and the U.S. government needs to break from Netanyahu and stop being complicit in Israel's illegal actions.

It is a little strange seeing a student who is occupying a campus holding a sign saying “End the occupation.”
The school changed their policies on tents the same day the Virginia state police went there, there was no policy on tents, but on the morning the police went there, they changed it to require a permit

An ugly look for the university, and Jim Ryan. UVA knew the weather calls for rain for the next 5 days and telling the protestors they could stay, but now had to remove their tents was ridiculous.
A calculated insult to the peaceful protestors whose tents on the lawn interfered with nothing at all.
This is also a slap in the face of those in C'ville who have been trying to replace some ugly racial history with an open-arms policy to all.
I guess this just goes to prove even if you're protesting our US complicity in innocent children's deaths politics and $ will still always rule the roost.
As a 100% disabled US Vietnam Combat War veteran I remember most clearly seeing innocent little children maimed and killed. Kids that looked a little differently but played and laughed just like ours and deserved a chance at having lives.
Now we're back to having a govt and universities that talk big about caring and "rights" but when it comes to action still choose dollars over children.
Many Americans still close their eyes to it and take the 'bit'. However many more of us are starting to see through the charades and continual psychological media barrage that supports an almost psychotic government agenda. One of $ over human lives.

I’m a graduate student at UVA and this action by the president and administration against the anti war protesters was totally wrong and uncalled for. Now every department is in an uproar.
UVA's founder, a certain Mr. Jefferson, certainly had no use for 'radicals'.

GENOCIDE CONVENTION
Article 2 of the Convention defines genocide as:

(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

Article 3 defines the crimes that can be punished under the convention:
