  • In today's video we meet three baby opossums. They were each alone when they came to WildCare about two weeks ago, but they are of the same age, so they've become a family group. After being in Foster Care for two weeks, they're back onsite at WildCare. See them being weighed and checked, and learn how WildCare staff is using technology to help our Foster Care volunteers learn the skills they need to keep these babies healthy!

      Who do you call if you find opossum's? I found 6 and I'm not sure im giving the right care. I've called around my area so far no luck on finding a place. It's been a little over a week and one of the babies out of the blue its left eye went cloudy. So now I'm concerned

      @@chellerock2685 in Ohio we have in Columbus a wild life Rehab place, depends on how young they are, if you're trying to bottle feed they need a special nipple or to be tube feed and with wet cotton wipe thier areas to make them go to the bathroom. You can call ODRN wildlife and ask for advice, or ask for a referral to an agency that can help, there's a good chance you'll have to give up , depends on your state . Try also your vet and goggle questions regarding care and good luck!😊

      Ok thank you and they been drinking from a eye dropper or syringe I've also seen all of them drinking from the bowl I left in there home I made them. They seem to be going to bathroom on there own. I weighed them and the little one is 2.4 and 4 of them are all around 4.8 and then the big one is 6.9 but they get real scared when I go to feed them and wont eat. Nothing happen different to spook them.

    There's one that comes in the morning to eat cat food on my porch that is a LITTLE bit smaller than these - should I bring it to the rehabber, or is it big enough to be on it's own. You said they would "go outside this weekend". Does that mean you're releasing them, or putting them in a cage outside? Thanks!

    • @notme2day
      @notme2day Před 11 měsíci

      It doesn't look like they answer questions. I would look on line for a phone number for a wildlife center or a wildlife rehab in your state. Some states it's illegal to interfere with opossums.
      OR
      start leaving out fresh fruits and veggies for the little one to eat, it might be big/old enough to be on its own. Babies that are 3-5 months, measure about 7 inches from nose to butt (not including tail) are ok to be on own if not injured.
      Best of luck.

    • @MJ-ct3gv
      @MJ-ct3gv Před 2 měsíci

      Males have testicles that are visible and females have a small line around the underside/abdomen that is/will be their pouch. If you google a female opossum pouch you can see a better pic of what I am talking about.

      The opossum is useful. Cleans our yards of snails, bugs, and ticks. They don't carry diseases because of their low body temperature.

      Actually if a baby falls off the mama, it usually doesn't go back for it. It isn't always the perfect age and then many caring individuals find the babies and want to help.
      Are you a wildlife specialist sir?
      I see already people relaying facts about opossums and how they are extremely helpful for the environment.
      People also rescue bats. You may not agree with bat rescue but people make sure they aren't sick and get them back outside, & every bat out there is doing you a favor by wiping out mosquito populations.
      Also, if it bothers you that people would help wildlife and not cats and dogs, if you yourself have not volunteered at a shelter, you certainly could if you want to or your local shelters are needing help.

      @@MsKleinlautThey can carry diseases, but rabies isn't as prevalent because of low body temp-it is not a guarantee though.

      @@MJ-ct3gv Every spring pellets are dropped from helicopters for wildlife to eat and in this area we do not have any cases of rabies.
